Die Unterkunft
Harwood's Choice, our 50-acre estate is a natural, peaceful, rustic setting with excellent views of Church Creek; excellent for watching birds, deer, fox, wild turkeys, eagles, osprey, and just relaxing and enjoying the peace of nature and the water. Originally built as servants' quarters for the main house, Harwood Cottage is located on this property and overlooks a cove of Church Creek. Guests are welcome to wander and explore this peaceful place.

Beautiful country lanes for fall walks, bicycling, and bird-watching. The perfect place to get away from it all.

Kayakers: Bring your kayak, canoe, or paddleboard/SUP and launch right behind the cottage into our cove and explore as far as you wish. Church Creek empties into Fishing Creek which leads to the Little Choptank River and then into the Chesapeake Bay. Or use our place as a jumping off point to put-ins near Blackwater NWR on Rt 335, public boat ramps on Smithville Road, Taylors Island, Shorters Wharf and Hoopers Island. The possibilities for exploration by water are almost endless! Paddle up the Blackwater River towards Peter's Neck, where Harriet Tubman was born into slavery; paddle down into the refuge and into more open water. Launch at Seward and paddle the Little Blackwater upriver towards Cambridge. At Hoopers Island, paddle along the causeway for dramatic views of the Chesapeake Bay. Wherever you go, you will be treated to fantastic bird and aquatic life!

Birdwatchers: our birdlife is well-known among local birders as being quite rich and varied: cuckoos, red-headed woodpeckers, prairie warblers, summer tanagers, bluebirds, Chuck-will's-widow, cormorants, kingfishers, over-wintering diving ducks, and even a loon in early spring! Walk our 5 acres of grounds, 1/2 mile lane and into our 45-acre woods to hear and see the best of birdlife in the county. There are also great trails at Blackwater NWR for birding.

Bikeriders: there are flat and peaceful country roads starting from your doorstep. Go for two miles or for 100 miles - you can do that here. We can let you know of places for refreshments and pit-stops, and the better, safer roads. You may store your bikes indoors in the utility room of the cottage to keep them out of the weather. Note that we have a 1/2 mile hardscrabble driveway before you reach paved road.

The cottage can sleep 2 couples or 2 singles. It has two bedrooms upstairs with nice views of our cove, each with a king bed; one of the beds is a California king. Both have memory foam mattresses. Each bedroom has two bedside tables with lamps, a closet, chair, dresser and luggage rack. The bedrooms are nestled in a dormer, so one side has a sloping ceiling. Both bedrooms have window air conditioner units.

Downstairs has a fully equipped kitchen with an island. Kitchen has a coffee service featuring a selection of Green Mountain blends (including decaf choices) plus Celestial herbal teas and hot chocolate; all individual k-cups for your hygiene. There is a microwave, stove and a small countertop dishwasher. Dishes, silverware, pots, pans, cooking utensils and BBQ cooking tools are all supplied.

Kitchen has a side entrance door that leads to a small patio with a charcoal grill and Adirondack chairs.

Dining room has a table and 4 chairs plus two wingback chairs and side table and window A/C.

Living room has a couch, rocking chair and side table, flat screen TV with DirectTV, plus window A/C.

Bathroom has bathtub/shower combo and storage shelves, overhead vent fan and lighting.

Utility room with concrete floor has a stacked washer and dryer, shelves for storage, hanging racks to drip dry or hang your gear, a utility sink and space to store up to 4 bicycles.

Patio, chairs, and charcoal grill are located out the side door. Citronella candles supplied; please bring your own charcoal.

No smoking anywhere in the house or outside- ANYWHERE.

We have WiFi; the house also has two plug-in USB ports that each have four slots; also provided is a surge-protected power strip for your convenience.

I grew up in Church Creek, on the very same property where our cottage is. Creating this space for others and being able to share our beautiful property has been a labor of love. I am very excited to have you come stay on our beautiful land and enjoy the woods, the yard and the water. I am a former competitive cyclist (pack racer) and also love to canoe. I have a pretty good understanding of what riders and outdoor people are looking for. I also am a bird watcher and love our rich and varied bird life.
