The Cottage dates from 1871 and was part of a hunting lodge.
The Cottage dates from 1871 and was part of a hunting lodge built by the 7th Earl Cowper in part of old Sherwood Forest. The Cottage is Grade II * Listed and was converted from the Grooms' quarters, the harness room and the scullery for the old kitchen. The former stables, coach house and Kitchen to Beauvale House, are also now converted to a character homes. The Cottage is part of the North wing of the imposing Beauvale House with its Victorian folly 90ft Hunting Tower, high above the wood. Beauvale House retains a strong connection with the writings of DH Lawrence, with many of the characters supposedly based on staff and residents of Beauvale at the turn of the 19th/20th century. The game keeper's cottage now lies derelict in the nearby woodland and the red gate (of Lady Chatterley's Lover fame) remains in the walled garden of Beauvale House.
The Cottage has a double bedroom with King size pine bed and washed pine and Shabby Chic furniture with leaded windows overlooking Beauvale House. The Bathroom is on the same floor with a walk in Shower with sink and toilet. On the ground floor there is a split level living area with a raised dining area suitable for 4 people with a church pew built into the alcove and bench seating round a pine table. The lounge retains the wood panelling of the original harness room and saddlery and now has a modern sofa and club chair, with a table on a traditional stone floor. Freesat satellite TV is available with Free Wireless Broadband from BT, subject to local conditions. The kitchen is reached up stone stairs from the living area and is actually the old scullery to Beauvale House with high vaulted ceilings. The kitchen is hand crafted with a large Belfast sink but retains modern appliances, fridge/freezer, electric oven and gas hob, microwave and washer dryer. Kitchen utensils, crockery and cutlery are all provided. The kitchen windows look out over the inner courtyard. The entrance to the Cottage is from the inner courtyard through a large church style gothic door. A parking area for two cars is 30 metres away, there is a fenced garden area to the front of the cottage with table and chairs.
