Welcome to 740 House

You can enjoy our space from the privacy of your own private, sunny room. Traveling with another family or group? Rent two or three rooms (listed on Airbnb) for a vacation that can include time together and some privacy too.

Die Unterkunft

A brand new, luxurious guest space, the Gold Room is a beautifully decorated oasis, with an antique rice-carved queen bed, new Kingsdown mattress set, reading corner, views of the lovely yard that leads to a stunning view of the cliffs overlooking the Potomac, and a quaint private bath with shower.

Our house is very homey and decorated lovingly with old-time charm and modern convenience. The rooms are freshly painted and display our extensive art collection. If you are looking for a clean, welcoming, comfortable space right in the heart of Harper's Ferry. Come on down! Call on us for anything you need, including conversation!

We offer three sunlit bedrooms. Downstairs you'll find the Gold Room, a brand-new luxurious guest space with private in-suite bath overlooking the Potomac River bluffs. Decorated in restful golds and pastels the room features a rosewood desk, reading corner and a vintage queen-size four-poster-rice-carved bed with a brand new Kingsdown mattress set.

Two quaint upstairs bedrooms (with a full-size bed in Sweet Room and a queen size bed in Charming Room) offer views of historic Harpers Ferry and a quiet spot to rest from the day's activities . When both guest rooms are occupied, they share a striking period bathroom complete with claw tub, pedestal sink, toiletries, and piles of towels.

We prefer two night minimums; but one night may be available in certain seasons and if you call close to your proposed arrival time. We are required to collect a 10 percent Harper's Ferry room tax and state sales tax upon your arrival

The living room, dining room, porch, front hall, yard and gazebo are shared spaces, and there is plenty of parking--a rarity in Harpers Ferry.

If you lie in the hammock at night, the stars are brilliant, and you may hear the Potomac River below.

Or walk out our driveway to the end of East Ridge Street for a stunning view of the Potomac River, the railroad bridge, and the breath-taking confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers below,

Make us your home base as you hike, shop, pursue zip lines and outdoor adventures, raft, tour history, or cross country ski. After a full day, visit our local spa, then come home to hot chocolate or iced tea and cookies, swing on the hammock, sit by the fire, or rock on the front porch as the hikers go by. Come to our friendly place!

Zugang für Gäste

You'll have access to our spacious front hall and living room. In the morning, you may enjoy a simple breakfast in our charming dining room, the gazebo, or the wide wrap-around porch.

Evenings, read in the quaint living room by a cozy fire. Feel hearty? Try swinging under the stars on a hammock and listening for the sounds of the Potomac River rushing by.

Or walk to the end of East Ridge Street for a breathtaking view of the Potomac River, the railroad bridge, and the breath-taking confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.

You will also have access to our very friendly, non-allergenic Golden Doodle, Asher (a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle). He is a presence, so if you don't like dogs, you may want to keep a wide birth.

If you own a dog, we can set up a vacation visit for your pooch with Asher's dog-loving sitters who offer no cages, large fenced-in rural properties, and an overall good time. Asher cries when they bring him home.

Interaktion mit Gästen

I live in the house too--and will be at home during your visit; but we close off some doors when we have guests to give us all some privacy. That said, I'm happy to host and am available for anything you need, including conversation! Meeting you is a treat!

Weitere wichtige Infos

Workers lived in 740 House during the civil war--you can see evidence of this period in the stone basement, which remained after the house burned down and was rebuilt in the early 1900's. Our place is called "a four-square" house, referring to the room arrangement and the traditional large front foyer.

If you lie in the hammock at night, the stars are brilliant, and you may hear the Potomac River below.

Really enjoyed our stay at 740 House in Harpers Ferry. Bill is a wonderful host who cooks an outstanding breakfast. Loved the pecan-covered French toast and the perfectly cooked bacon (not well done like most places). This B&B is in a good location and Bill's dog, Asher, could not be more well-behaved and friendly. Bill filled us in on the latest regarding the very important upcoming mayoral race. We are really pulling for Greg Vaughn to be reelected, so the new Hilltop Hotel project can begin. We spoke to the mayor in front of his house for 45 minutes about this historic hot-button issue and actually feel very connected to Harpers Ferry after only staying there two days. What a wonderful and charming town! Our host, Bill, was the best! We highly recommend Harpers Ferry and 740 House for a weekend getaway. All the best! Doug Wood

Bill's B&B felt like staying at someone's charming home. He was gracious and friendly but gave us our space and privacy. He even shared his toolbox to fix our bikes. Thank you for a lovely breakfast and pleasant conversation. Very convenient to downtown but off the main block. Thank you!

Staying with Bill is like staying with a beloved family friend or uncle. The house and grounds are big and spacious, with tons of character. Asher the golden doodle is a mellow presence, and Bill is the most accommodating and unassuming host. Also, his smoked salmon hash with vinaigrette is amazing. We stayed in the Gold Room, which is just off the main dining area on the first floor. The room and common areas are very clean, the queen sized bed is gloriously comfortable, and the wifi is fast and reliable. The house is a perfect base from which to go hiking, explore the town of Harpers Ferry, or just spend a quiet long weekend. It is an easy walking distance to town, and we drove to Frederick (30min) and Shepherdstown (20min) for dinner. We are early risers, so welcomed the chirping birds outside our window in the morning. In the evening, we enjoyed wine in the gazebo with Bill and the other guests, trading stories and marveling at the stars. We drove up from DC, but it would be an easy Amtrak train ride (the train station is in town, which is about 1/2 mile away, but it is uphill to the house). There is plenty of parking in the driveway. There is a plethora of things to do, especially if you like hiking. Bill is a wellspring of advice and recommendations, and he's quite spot on. We will be back to explore the cycling paths. We highly recommend Bill's place!

Bill was the ideal host. He shares some great stories with us over some wine and cheese, but also respected our privacy. He put together an unbelievable breakfast, all of the ingredients were truly farm to table. The room and house were clean and accessible to downtown.

We really enjoyed staying with Bill. His home is beautiful and close to all in Harper's Ferry. Bill went out of his way to make us feel at home. He greeted us with lovely refreshments and made us a totally delicious breakfast, and we got some much needed friendly dog time. Also, the coffee was strong, plentiful and tasty. He gave us lots of helpful advice about the area. We hope to stay with him again soon.

My husband and I had a lovely stay. We visited in the winter but were able to walk to the downtown area from the house. Be prepared, the walk back is all uphill! Bill was a great host and served a delicious breakfast. There are two sweet dogs in the home, but if you are a not a dog person, this is not the place for you.

Bill was s gracious host, and his home was very comfortable. He was flexible with our check in time and gave us great suggestions for our visit. My husband wanted to do something special for my birthday, and Bill went out of his way to pick up flowers and a cake for our arrival. Bill is a great cook, and breakfast was wonderful and filling! We stayed in the Gold Room. The bed was comfortable and shower had great water pressure. We would definitely recommend staying at Bill's place when visiting Harper's Ferry and surrounding towns. It was a great getaway from DC!
