A typical vacation will have you arriving at the St Thomas airport.
I’ll pick you up and then shop for your lunch and dinners, or I can shop for you. On to Compass Point Marina where we will transfer your provisions to Sea Level. Then it is off to Christmas Cove, home of the friendly sea turtles. We will probably be just in time for a great sunset, the kind that drops into the ocean. The next morning I will introduce you to my turtle friends.

On your honeymoon? I can disappear.
Want to tie the knot? I can arrange weddings.
Or you want to chat? As an airline pilot that retired at 52 and sailed from Baltimore to Thailand, I have a few tales to tell. I am sure you have had a few adventures to share as well.

Die Nachbarschaft

The typical vacation will have you picked up from the St. Thomas airport in the afternoon.
I will be there to greet you. If you are hungry we will stop for a bite, then on to shop for your provisions (food & drink).
Next will be Compass Point Marina on the east end of St Thomas. There we will transfer your provisions to your new home, sailing ketch Sea Level.
After a tour of boat and briefing we are off to Christmas Cove, named after where Columbus spent his Christmas in 1493. This anchorage is also home of the most friendly sea turtles and spotted eagle rays.
On the following day our sailing adventure will take us to many different coves and cays of St John and the BVIs.
I will tailor your sailing vacation to your interest and desires. Sail and explore one of many sugar-sand beaches and pristine reefs. You decide!

My boat is listed as a B&B.
With a boat you can do much more; sailing and exploring the remote islands of all the Virgins. (British Virgin Islands - passports required).
These activates must be at an additional cost to cover my time as captain and fuel ($195/day).
I will cook and clean for all your meals.
Food cost for lunch and dinner varies depending on your taste.
Usually $60 / day will cover the cost for two. You decide when I take you shopping if you want a steak or hamburger menu.
If you want to go to British Virgin Islands there are customs fees that range from $40 to $150 depending on how long you stay and where you go, moorings are $30/night. I will try to anchor to save on cost but sometimes it is necessary to use a mooring .
If you want only a place to sleep, the cost quoted by AirBnB is what you pay. But if you want an adventure, it must come as an added expense. You decide what kind of adventure you desire and I will give you a fair price.
Pack light! I will supply beach towels, snorkel equipment, and even tooth brushes if you forget yours. It is best to pack your clothing in soft duffel bags.

We had an absolutely fantastic time with Richard on Sea Level. What an experience! Our expectations based on the reviews were pretty high and I think our visit exceeded our expectations. It was a great way to see the Virgin Islands, both US and BVI. The snorkeling was fantastic, the sea life spectacular. I was concerned that being May it would be too hot onboard when we were moored, it wasn't. I also wondered about bugs--living in northern Florida I am familiar with some of the unpleasant bugs and pests around water. No bugs! No mosquitoes! It was a relaxing, very pleasant trip. The food on board (we ate primarily on board with Richard doing all cooking, all prep) was terrific. We enjoy food and when asked what would we like to eat, we always responded "chef's choice" and it turned out wonderful every time. When asked where we wanted to go in the mornings, we asked what did the captain recommend, and it was always great. I don't think you could find a better, more enjoyable way to see the Virgin Islands. Plus the bonus to me, I didn't have to completely educate myself about the area because he knew so much, his knowledge of the history of the area and the way it shared it with us was wonderful. I didn't have to figure out transportation from one island to another nor meet transportation schedules. Oh yeah, and this may be important to folks--this was our first time living on a boat other than a very large cruise ship. Also, the only times we had been sailing were on half day snorkel trips in Maui, Key West and the Bahamas.

My husband and I booked our first 3 nights of our honeymoon here. Richard was FANTASTIC! He took us to some great spots around USVI and BVI. We went to a few different towns, snorkeled at some of the best spots around (he even took videos of us snorkeling with a go-pro), made us fabulous meals and drinks (especially is famous painkillers!), sent us on some great hikes, and knew the best spots overall. He knows a lot about the history of the area and is an excellent sailor -- and had some great stories to share! He knew when to engage with us and when to give us some space. We can't wait to come back and spend some more time in the islands.

Captain Richard did a fantastic job taking us sailing for 3 days. It was like having your own private captain, chief and tour guide while visiting multiple bays around St John. After picking us up from the airport Captain Richard went out of his way to make us feel comfortable. While on-board his beautiful sailboat he cooked for us some amazing meals and shared wonderful stories. He also knew the best snorkeling stops on the island and was very knowledgeable about sea life. I would highly recommend that you try this experience because you will make great memories that will last a lifetime!

I write this review as my wife and I are listening to the news about the pending snowstorm heading into the Chicago area. To help us cope, our conversation turns to the very recent memories we have from our week long vacation of a lifetime aboard Captain Richard Hudson's Sea Level. What an awesome adventure! I cannot say enough good things about Richard and Sea Level. I highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure and fun who wants to get up close to nature and experience the Virgin Islands in a unique way. From the time he picked us up at the airport, Captain Richard felt like an old friend. He is very easy going and shared many stories and interesting information about sailing, the islands we were visiting, and his life's adventures. He is also a lot of fun as he has a great sense of humor! He took us shopping for our meals and libations needs. Then we bought a bunch of local fruit from the fruit stand down the road from the market. Then we were on the boat and on our way. From then on Richard took care of everything; we were greeted with coffee in the morning and amazing breakfasts, lunches and dinners on board. The meals were healthy, very flavorful, and served in just the right proportions. He also seems to know exactly when it's time for a mid afternoon snack or adult beverage. His after dinner painkillers are awesome and were the perfect dessert for me! We also had a couple of meals onshore and invited our new friend to join us. Captain Richard humbly accepted and we had a great time on each occasion. We spent most of our time snorkeling and sailing and viewing the islands from the water. We saw many amazing things and swam with turtles, eagle rays, and all kinds of different colorful reef fish. Richard got it all on the GoPro so we have the videos forever. The Sea Level is clean and cozy. The winds were up and sea was a little rougher than normal, but the good Captain handled Sea Level in a way that made us comfortable at all times. He also was patient with me as he attempted to teach me some of the important points of sailing. (I need to get back on board with him asap to continue to hone my newly acquired skills!) We look forward to another trip with Captain Richard and Sea Level! Cheers, Todd & Lori Lindberg

Before we booked this trip, we read literally every single one of Richard's reviews. Everything they said applied to our trip. Richard's a great guy. He's enjoyable to be around, he tells great stories, he knows when to hang out and when to give you space, he's a wonderful cook, he makes good coffee, and excellent fruit and yogurt breakfasts. His pain killers are a treat. Value is great. Clearly most of his guests have been couples but I saw from the theme of the reviews that it could work well for our family. We am specifically writing this review to tell you about our experience as a family with two nature loving girls ages 8 and 10. We liked the idea that we could craft the trip to suit our particular preferences. We wanted to see beautiful places and snorkel with sea creatures. We didn't have much interest in beaches or outings into towns. We only ate one dinner off the boat. My husband and I have been through the Virgin Islands four or five times between the two of us but our kids had never been. We knew we definitely wanted to make it out to the BVIs and the Baths. We assumed we would end up going to a lot familiar spots. We did end up visiting the Baths but almost every other location was new to us and amazing. We really appreciated Richard's local knowledge. He knew which moorings would be calmest based on the wind direction. He knew where to reliably find sea turtles. He had a lot of favorite snorkeling spots and we saw a ton of cool creatures: green sea turtle, hawksbill turtle, nurse shark, sting ray, spotted eagle ray, squid, lobsters, tarpon, barracuda, and a ton of bright and beautiful fish. The Bubbling Pool was also a big hit with our kids. He also took great videos that he shared with us afterward. Richard was patient with the girls as they figured out how to snorkel. At first they got tired easily and he was often willing to go back to the boat with them so that we could stay out longer. His boat is well equipped for snorkeling. He's got masks, fins, anti-fog spray and the like but also smaller touches like warm, long sleeve swim shirts for adults and extra hairbands for women and girls. We brought our own mask and fins for the kids. We're glad we packed light since we spent most of the time in our bathing suits. We brought books and crossword puzzles. In hindsight, we wish the kids had brought a few more activities. The sleeping arrangements were comfortable. We slept in the captain's quarters and the girls took the V birth. Richard was kind enough to sleep in the salon. We had some rocky waves on our first night and our kids woke up and called out for us but woke him up instead. Richard handled it well and let them sleep the rest...

Perfect trip! Richard feels like an old friend from the minute he picks you up at the air port. He sets you up with a tailored itinerary, we love snorkeling so he took us to the best places in the area! He is a great guide explaining the different fish chasing turtles catching it all on film to send you home with a flash drive of the adventure. The food was terrific, Richard is a wonderful cook three great meals a day with healthy snacks! I can't forget to mention the drinks from the morning coffee to the great assortment of adult beverages (the Pain Killer a must try) he always knows when your ready for a refill. To top it off your on a beautiful sail boat with the best view anywhere. Looking forward to next years experience on Sea Level!

I hold a USCG 100 ton Master license with all endorsements. I was working as a Captain on a 60 ft. catamaran for 74 passengers, and a 42 ft. SCUBA dive boat for 17 divers. I have left that job to do AirBnB full time.
My area of operation is the US and British Virgin Islands.
In my previous life I started out as a cook and a baker in the US Navy, which led me to complete a 2 year degree in Culinary Arts and Restaurant Managing. Then it was back to college to study aviation for my 4 year BS degree. I started as a flight instructor and worked my way up the ladder to fly for a major airline, USAirways. After 29 years as a pilot, I retired in 2000 as a Boeing 737 Captain.
After retiring, I fulfilled my life long dream by sailing my boat from Baltimore to Thailand through the South Pacific. My favorite island to visit was New Zealand.
Returning to the States in 2006 I found my current boat "Sea Level" in the British Virgin Islands. I enjoyed sailing and living in the Virgin Islands so much I decide to stay and make it my home.
Being in the tourist industry, I get to meet many interesting people from all walks of life. So many have come as guests and leave as friends.
