Ricky and our friendly crew is always ready to help you and will accompany you on daytrips to beautiful remote islands, a nearby waterfall, and other places, at your request.
Nagari Sungai Pinang is a small fishing village about two hours away from Padang. Here you will be welcomed into an authentic Minangkabau community and get a feeling of real Indonesian village culture, with possibilities to participate in different aspects of everyday life. Populated by about 1000 inhabitants, most of them fishermen and farmers, these villagers live an easy lifestyle without rush, fully sharing commitment and respect. The hospitality of the villagers, combined with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and the Bukit Barisan Hills, will make you feel at home as soon as you enter Nagari Sungai Pinang . Just make sure you’ll have full energy to reply to all the ‘hello’s’ from local kids when taking a walk through the village!
In addition to exploring the surrounding beaches, ocean and forests, our project also offers you a chance to join the local fishermen when pull up fishing net on the beach, assist the farmers in their daily work, as well as going on a hike to the nearby waterfall, surfing for beginners, island hopping, snorkeling in many different spots, join the volunteer program at our sea turtlle conservation center, teaching English and recycling to the local kids, take a woodcarving course and play football with the local youth. And if you are a big fan of cooking and Indonesian food, don't miss the opportunity to learn the secrets of the local cuisine from village women.

Since May 2010, Authentic Sumatra is running an ecotourism project to help the local community by working with them. The income from Ricky’s Beach House is to pay the crew and help the villagers.
Where the money goes?
-60% of the Ricky’s Beach House income goes to the crew and their families
-30 % of the Ricky’s Beach house income goes to support poor young people’s studies (high school) in Padang.
-10% of the Ricky’s Beach House income are saved in case of medical urgency or urgent transport to Padang.
So the money comes to the village and stay in the village.
10 people from poor families from the village are working with us + some free lance from Padang.
We buy as often as possible food and drinks in the village, as well as others needs.
We are working with local people for others activities such renting boats, cooking classes, massages or laundry.
Local art craft : we support local art craft and woodcarving by working with local woodcarver and selling their product to our travelers. All wooden furnitures in RBH are hand-made by Sava, one of our woodcarver.
-We often organize workshop with kids from the village such drawing or painting class, English class, hand made bracelet or necklace, with the help of our travelers, to connect on the one hand, the travelers and on the other hand, the local kids all together.
-We also receive regularly clothes, pen, school supplies from our travelers that we give out to the schools or poor families from the village.
-We help our crew to improve their skills by often sending them to accompany our travelers (Mentawai, Sumatra tour), providing them training in Padang (guide certificate) or even supporting their studies fees (during 3 years we helped 3 people for their high school fees and 3 of them graduated!)
Ricky’s Beach house became a kind of parallel school for our crew : they can learn English with our travelers, learn how to be responsible, learn how to work, learn others culture and open their mind.
• Our village is a small fishermen village with strong traditions. To respect the villagers and the community, dress modestly not too short.
•If you have never been to Indonesia before and even never been to Asia, you might be surprised to see garbage everywhere (roads, beaches...). Indonesia is still far from this problem and almost nobody is educated about it, especially in villages. Our future goal is to to make local people aware of environment, green and garbage recycling but for the moment, the village is like all the others villages in Indonesia.
•If you are invited to someone's house, don't come in with your shoes : always take it off before come in. To great someone, shake his/her hand and always with your right hand. Try to eat with your right hand also as its not polite to use left hand. If you are invited to someone's house for eating or drinking, never start eating before you have been told to.
•At Ricky's Beach House, there is neither hot water in the bungalow, nor WIFI. But you can get internet (and phone network) everywhere with a 3G smartphone and a 3G key - Telkomsel - very cheap in Indonesia.
No ATM in the village so think about taking some money before your arrival (in Padang).
•Ricky's Beach House is a place for you if you are easy going, if you like and want to meet local people and if you are looking for authenticity and nature. You might be disappointed if you are looking for Balinese service with comfort. Traveling thought Sumatra is not easy, its a root destination.
Wenn du bis 24 Stunden vor deiner Reise stornierst, erhältst du eine volle Rückerstattung inklusive der Service-Gebühren.
