Charming & cosy! Restored Freedman's cottage on Forsyth Row, only 2 blocks from the Park. This is one of a group of 4 airbnb cottages in this lane. Fully renovated, all modern conveniences in an amazing setting. Check profile for other listings! (SVR-00577)
The Freedman's cottage is one of a group of small dwellings built in the 1870's, most likely to house former slaves. When constructed they were the only buildings on the block---a small brick stable building was added around 1880 on the corner of the lane & Jefferson (now an apt.)
The cottages were originally 2 bedrooms with large fireplaces in the living room & kitchen for heating & cooking. There was most likely a privy out back (bathroom added later)...Inhabitants of the cottages were most likely artisans or specialized workers for larger house nearby. The women were often employed as domestics, seamstresses, or laundresses.
The area of West Broad Street (now MLK jr) became the hub of the African American community until desegregation in the 1970's. It was a thriving neighborhood of movie theatres, shops, bars, restaurants, & churches....most of which have now disappeared.
This is not a chic suburb! It is a diverse urban neighborhood, populated by students, gays, young professionals, & African Americans, living side by side. There is low income housing in the area. If this mix bothers you, please look elsewhere. Parking is non metered street parking. (no lane parking except to load/unload)
The cottage itself sleeps 2 comfortably (queen sized) freedmans cottage is furnished throughout with antiques & original art---some from local artists. There is a twin sized rollaway bed for an additional person. The rollaway is really not intended for a full sized adult!! It's okay for a short stay, but cannot be considered very comfortable. Freedman's cottage has a fully stocked kitchen with coffee maker & toaster & tea kettle. Everything is provided for you to make a light breakfast. There is a bakery just one block north (Rum Runners Bakery) which makes breakfast easy; & the Sentient Bean coffee house is only 2 blocks away at the south end of the park.
Every Saturday (for most of the year) there is a Farmer's Market held at the south end of the park---a wonderful people watching venue & of course lots of organic produce & seasonal fruits to be purchased!
Please note that none of my properties are child proofed & they are not appropriate for children younger than 15...
Zugang für Gäste
Guests have access to the entire apartment & the private courtyard out back. The residents of the other cottages in the row are other airbnb travelers!! Feel free to swap stories & recommendations with your neighbors; perhaps even a glass of wine on the back deck!!
Interaktion mit Gästen
Since I don't live on the property, I generally am not around for day to day interaction with guests, but I always try to have an initial meeting & orientation. I can recommend restaurants & some bars & clubs downtown. I'm always available if needed! Savannah is best explored on foot & "discovered" by stumbling on quaint streets & shops...Tybee Island is a wonderful little beach town---even off season & places like Beaufort & Blufton are not far away for a day trip!
Weitere wichtige Infos
These little cottages are approaching 150 years of age. They are wooden structures in a subtropical climate. In Savannah, due to our hot, humid & basically swampy setting, we have an abundance of lizards, flies, spiders, mosquitoes & the ubiquitous palmetto bug. For the most part, these critters stay outside, but occasionally you may see one. Please don't freak out...The cottages are treated on a regular basis, but sometimes, the occasional straggler gets through the defenses.... Please don't kill the lizards! shoo them out if they get inside---they eat the other bugs!! As these structures are approaching 150 years of age, don't expect a sweet smelling "plug in deodorizer" type atmosphere. There have been 150 years of wood smoke, cooking & frying, pets & large families--both African American & white over the years. If the house is shut up for long periods & the ceiling fans are not used (we use them here in the South!)...a certain "old house" smell may occasionally appear...If you are extremely sensitive to this type of thing, please look elsewhere...I hate artificial deodorizers...
*I have other cottages in this same location!

A regular guy. Easy going & laid back. Love to travel, read, & hike. A film buff for indies & foreign..Fluent in both Portuguese & Spanish. LGBT welcome.
My former life includes 20 years in NYC in a banking/finance career. Love the big city & all it offers, but also appreciate living on a smaller scale in a place like Savannah.
I try to get to Europe for a few weeks at least once a year & will gladly trade travel stories with other travel aficionados. After grad school, I bought a one way ticket & lived in Brasil for 2 years; working as an english teacher & living with brazilian students in a pension. Also traveled to Argentina, Paraguay, & Uruguay during that time...
