I appreciate your candid feedback, and apologize for what happened. There were two main issues here (which I bear responsibility for and have taken steps to correct so that no other renter has this experience). First, this part of Vermont is especially rural, with an abundance of wild animals that can sometimes pose a challenge for us homeowners. In order to prevent a critter from getting into the crawl space under the house and making it their own home, we placed some mothballs there. Animals such as ground hogs hate the smell of mothballs and this is a humane way to keep them out. Unfortunately we put in too many mothballs, and this created an odor in the house. We’ve since removed all the mothballs and are using other means to humanely deal with the wildlife (a “have a heart” trap for trapping animals outside so they can be relocated). Second, a few weeks prior to your arrival we had the exterior of the house treated by an exterminator to help get rid of flies. This spray stained our outside windows to a degree I did not anticipate. We are in the process of cleaning every window inside and out so the full, unblemished view of nature can be seen through the big windows.
Also, flypaper applied to windows is an unpleasant necessity in the country, especially in Northern Vermont where there are many fields and farms. Most of the year they are not a big problem but in the fall they can be a nuisance. In the future, I will have the flypaper changed within 24 hours prior to a guests arrival.
While my wife and I have had nothing but positive reviews since we started renting the house through AirBNB, one poor experience is one too many and I’m very sorry this was not up to par. I have asked the folks at AirBNB to refund three nights of your stay. I also would urge anyone renting on AirBNB to provide hosts like me with complete and honest feedback (such as yours) so that we’ll know if we made mistakes, or improvements need to be made.
