Der Wohnraum

Darin Bungalow aka Tea Pickers Cottage is in a small village and you get to use the entire house, not just a room ! This property is set on a small working tea estate.Pepper,Cinnamon,Coffee and rubber is grown as well.
Darin Bungalow is the name of the house and staying here lets you into life in the village.
$59 includes your stay, all meals for 3 ,clean air and lots of tea cups !
Please let me know if you have a dietery preference or two, greens are from the property if not, grown in the village. The meals are cooked in our outdoor kitchen and consists of rice & curry.

What you pay includes a;; three meals, not gourmet but simple village fare.

Sitting at the back of the house one can almost smell the aroma of tea as it grows in the bushes.Tea is plucked three times a week on this property.you get to see all this up close.

**We will teach you how to pick tea leaves or even climb up a King Coconut tree, show best walking tracks and a villager will teach you how to cook a curry or two ...this is my way of increasing income of the villagers*** Some of the income from guests is given back to tea pickers as they appreciate an extra income,Well we all do I guess but,in the village it is appreciated more :))

After tea is picked, lorries come and weigh the tea, sign for it and drive to the next small village house that grows tea.Tea is finally taken to a tea factory for processing and we can arrange a free visit to the tea factory too.

After a morning walk,I recommend a dip in the cold to stream which runs along the property. If you stay in the water long enough small fish will feed on your feet...a kind of spa !
Sometimes when in the water, monkeys swing from branches overhead or a water monitor may swim by (no danger!)

Neighbours live by tea, rubber or small crop cultivation. They are friendly, simple village folk.

The rooms are very basic, nothing luxurious with real beds and there are fans in both (URL HIDDEN) best place to sleep though is the giant wooden bed (like in Bali)in the lounge!.A wood fire is used for cooking.

Bathroom is clean and and we use normal water by filling a larger bucket and this is one way to have a shower or you could have a deep well water bath by pulling a bucket out of the water and pouring it over. Most villagers do this...and when I'm there so do I !...or the stream.
The pets are a friendly village mongrel (dog)named Patty ..more like a village dog and a cat named Kitty.

There are 2 mountain bikes (one bike has a rear baby seat) if you want to explore the surroundings. If you need a guide, our expert with local knowledge,a villager turned guide will show you hiking trails, mountains to climb, rivers to swim and walks through surrounding villagers.

You could even visit a gem cutting factory 6KM's away as this district is known for it's gems such as Blue Sapphire.

Darin Bungalow is 2 hrs away from Colombo, off the Colombo-Ratnapura main road or Hatton Road.It could be a half way point going to Uda Walawe wild life park,Sinharaja(Ratnapura Road) or Nuwara Eliya on the Hatton Road.

This place is good as a stop n explore point if you are going up to Adams Peak/Hatton/Kithulgala (White water rafting)the hill country (Nuwara Eliya)on the hatton road or on to Ella or going to Uda Walawe wild life sanctuary etc.

The caretaker who lives on the property and looks after the tea bushes, pays the tea pluckers wages etc speaks almost no English and is a good village man who cooks me tasty food whenever I'm there, probably best curry I've had !

Why would you want to stay here?
I do to enjoy simple village life, unplug myself from the hustle & bustle of everyday life & the city.
All meals are included in the price, village style food ,cooked the way its done in the villages as is unlimited cups of...tea !

If you feel you need a English speaking guide let me know,I think bit of English and sign language will do though !
My private car and the driver can pick you up from the airport or even take you on a tour to Galle,Kandy etc in airconditioned comfort.
Bye and see you in Lanka !

Zugang für Gäste

You will have the entire 2-3 bedroom cottage for yourselves,a caretaker who will cook for you Lankan meals and make you unlimited pots of tea,a 2.5acre property to walk among tea bushes,a stream 5 minutes away to dip in & let fishes nibble and clean your feet.

What a truly unique and serene experience we had staying at the Tea Pickers cottage. It is in a really gorgeous and quaint village, that is surrounded by tea plantations. All the villagers are very friendly and smiley as you take a beautiful walk around the village. The stream you can walk up and down, adventuring over the rocks and that was a welcomed treat from the heat of the day. The caretaker is an absolute asset to Div and our stay. He is a very endearing man and we enjoyed our miming interactions. Silva prepared us delicious Sri Lankan meals with fresh ingredients from the land, endless tea and coffee and kindly also made us feel like we had our own space. The dog is also lovely and was our tour guide around the village, literally showing us which paths to take. Things to note: -The bikes are currently damaged. -The place can be a little tricky to find when dark, and having a local sim was a blessing for contacting the caretaker so he could direct the three-wheeler driver. -From our understanding there was no internet, but the experience was definitely one for switching off and embracing the nature and good food. We thoroughly recommend this stay for those looking for something unique, special and peaceful on your stay in Sri Lanka. Thank you Div and Silva.

Tea Picker's Cottage was a very unique experience. If you are looking to relax and do absolutely nothing for a few days, this is a great spot for you. We were hoping for a little more of an actual tea picking experience and expected several tea pickers around showing us how they do it and such but that was not the case. The place is also quite a ways from the traditional tea areas and a hearty drive to Adam's Peak. Overall, the place is quite basic as described and the caretaker is very friendly. The stream in the back of the property is quite lovely as well. However, do not come expecting a vast tea plantation or experience. Instead, come for a very quiet time, in a very remote area, amongst various fruits and vegetables. Div was a very helpful host and we appreciated his prompt replies and assistance in helping to sort out our transportation issues.

A beautiful place, rather remote, perfect for calm days, walks, talking to villagers, and letting the little fish in the stream clean your feet :). Unfortunately we had to leave earlier, but Div was extremely helpful and arranged taxi transport for us. They say you can drink the tap water here, but I would recommend you bring bottled water instead. The caretaker will happily help you get a threewheeler if you need to go to town (about 8 km away). Note: The description says two bedrooms, but there is just one, with two beds, plus the lounge. The caretaker is living in the same house.

Div was the definition of wonderful host! We got to enjoy his beautiful property on a tea plantation, and fantastic apartment in colombo just a few blocks from the beach. He went above and beyond to arrange transport, show us around and give us authentic Sri Lanka restaurant experience-even stopping at mcdonalds after for my 2 sons... Hope to meet up in Australia in the future div!!!

We had a real experience staying here and experiencing local life in Sri Lanka! We wanted to spend a couple of nights away from the usual tourist spots and away from the luxury of smart hotels. Staying at Darin Bungalow we spent a morning picking tea with the local women, we bathed in the stream (and yes the fish really do nibble at your toes), and the children from next door took us on a walk around their local area. The caretaker made us breakfast, lunch and dinner from local ingredients - it was great to see the garden produce put to such good use! We were rewarded for our tea picking with a chilled king coconut drink - delicious! The accommodation is basic, but clean and spacious. The caretaker was very helpful and kind, but speaks virtually no English, so be prepared to drive your own activities and explore yourself. Div was very helpful over email during the booking process and I'd recommend his properties. Great value, and a great addition to our holiday, thank you.

I enjoyed to stay in a cute house in tea estate place. It was so peaceful. The stillness in nature heals me a lot. Caretaker was a wonderful man, food was tasty. This house has two wonderful friends, small dog and cat. They are very good friend, showed me how beautiful friendship is! I have never seen dog and cat sleep together. Beyond the nation, country, we have to be like them. Thank you so much for wonderful house! Masumi

We immensely enjoyed our stay in the Panawala house as both myself and my travel friend Mahak, came from the corporate city life and our main aim was to enjoy a slow paced vacation. The place was very clean, with helpful caretakers, one of whom can speak good English. They helped us to arrange for transport and even went with us on a local tour of the village waterfall, climbing the streams nearby the tea plantations which we would not have found accessible on our own – as the locals were able to show us the route to take. When we went on the bus out of the place to the train station, our caretaker followed us right to the time our bus left, it was a truly heartfelt gesture! The meals were all prepared straight out of ingredients from the lovely garden, using a variety of curry leaves found and fruit trees with jackfruit, mango to prepare scrumptious meals; usually cooking from woodfire in an outside kitchen. Sometimes we enjoyed plucking the small jambu fruits from the trees and drinking from the coconuts available! We also tried special dishes, stringhoppers, hoppers and bread from the nearby small town, as well as a local drink, called Toddy. The water was fresh and drinkable, it was a very natural and pure environment. We enjoyed sitting on the large wooden living room platform as well as watching the woodpeckers, finches and other birds at the verandah. On some days we could see how the tea was harvested by the pluckers. As a host Div was super hospitable, he arranged for us to stay in Colombo for the last night and we had a great time meeting him and tasting the Colombo food and he also showed us around on our only night there. Overall the place is better than what was described and what we expected and we highly recommend this perfect, refreshing village stay in a tea plantation!
