Der Wohnraum

Come enjoy the nature & authentic farm life of our San Cayetano Farmhouse.

Our property is located on a private family owned dairy farm in Venecia de San Carlos. Owned by the Herrera-Parrales family since the 1940's, this 300-acre farm is met by two rivers: El Rio Guayabo and El Rio Caño Grande.

The two story property includes three air-conditioned bedrooms, a children’s room with two twin beds, two and half baths, a fully equipped kitchen, an upstairs living room with dining area, and a downstairs lounge area.

With a wrap-around porch to take-in the amazing landscape and to sit and enjoy your morning coffee – you will be invigorated by the sounds and views of the farm, surrounding forest, maintained gardens, adjacent flowing creek, and the variety of local birds (including humming birds, toucans, and if you’re lucky… a beautiful wild peacock that enjoys visiting the premise). You never know what bird you may encounter feeding off of the wildlife and the local fruit trees early in the morning or just before dusk. The local tropical wildlife sounds are incredibly soothing – nearby streams flowing with water, crickets chirping, frogs croaking, roosters and monkeys announcing morning wake-up calls - all of this combined creates something one might call "Paradise!"

Things to do:
A horseback tour of the farm can be organized upon request.

Take a variety of day trips to nearby popular travel destinations! Less than an hour’s driving distance away, you can visit the town of Fortuna to explore all the local adventures the Volcano Arenal has to offer (such as hiking, zip-lining, hanging bridges, white water rafting, slow river floats, kayaking through wildlife sanctuaries).

Or, take a trip to the famous Mariposa Hotel with its butterfly terrarium and local wildlife zoo. And while you are there, don’t miss out on hiking alongside the cascading waterful of La Paz, or visiting the Bosque Verde of Sarapiqui.

We are 2.5 hours north of San Jose (airport), 45 minutes east of Fortuna and Volcano Arenal, an hour drive from the less trodden cloud forest of Juan Castro Blanco National Park, with its wonderful bird watching, including the Resplendent Quetzal. To see Quetzal, the best season is February to early May. We are also 45 minutes North-East of La Paz Waterfall.

Other nearby attractions within 15 to 30 minute driving distance from the farm: relax at the local thermal hot springs (Aguas Termales) or go ziplining, or visit El Tucano Rainforest Resort and Thermal Spa (they have tennis courts!).

Food/Meals: There are many restaurants and supermarkets within a 10 minute drive (Costa Rican food is flavorful, yet not spicy). Traditional Costa Rican meals can be delivered from a local cook (if ordered in advance) for very reasonable prices, but please be advised, food delivery is not a thing in these areas. It is best to visit the local super market to shop for your cooking essentials.

Other things to note:

Cellphones: we suggest purchasing a SIM card immediately upon arrival in Costa Rica. You will need to use your map apps immediately for safe driving navigation. Go to (URL HIDDEN) for more details.

Navigating: Map apps are quite useful for driving in Costa Rica. For example, the Waze map app is used often.

Driving: We highly recommend renting a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Depending on your travel plans, it is likely you will occasionally encounter rough terrain, and within the farm there is a short distance where at least 3 kilometers will be country roads with dirt and pebbles.

Tips for Driving to the farm from SJO airport:
Please message us before booking if you wish to drive directly from the airport to the farm. We can help determine if this is feasible. Sunset is at 5:30 and night driving is highly discouraged until drivers have quite some experience on Costa Rican roads. Three hours of daylight are needed to safely arrive to the farm from the SJO airport. We recommend planning to arrive before sunset at 5:30 pm. The drive through mountainous cloud forests is splendid in daylight, but prone to fog and rain, especially at night, creating potentially hazardous visibility conditions after dark. Finding our countryside location will be much easier if you arrive before sunset the first time. If your plane lands in the morning or mid-day, you can drive here directly from the airport. Otherwise, it is safer to book a room near the airport on your first night or we can help you arrange hiring a private professional driver.

Your departure from farm to airport:
To drive directly to the SJO airport on the same day as your departing flight, you will need an afternoon or evening departing flight. For early morning departing flights, we recommended you stay your last evening near the airport.

Interaktion mit Gästen

Please note: Owner (Isabel) is not available 24/7, and is mainly accessible by cell phone texting and email only. There will be a property manager contact on the farm. This will be a trusted manager that will assist for mostly urgent matters. Really, we ask that travelers be mostly independent in caring for themselves.

House Rules:

First and foremost, we ask that you please be sensitive to your neighbors: Because you will be on a family farm, nearby farm houses include both young and elderly neighbors. We look for peaceful dwellers not looking to party hard, but to enjoy the peaceful nature reserves.

No smoking indoors. No loud music at any time or noise pollution after 8 pm.

If you encounter the wildlife, including the peacock, please DO NOT FEED the wildlife or approach animals you are not familiar with. The peacock does not particularly enjoy being disturbed, so please be peaceful when taking photos and simply respect all of nature’s precious gifts.

Breakfast: A Costa Rican 'tipico' breakfast will be provided between the hours of 7am-9:30am: Scrambled Eggs, Gallo Pinto (rice and beans), fruit of the day, and coffee and/or juice.

The cook speaks Spanish only and does not take special requests. Special diets must be communicated in advance, and we may not be able to accommodate at all times.

Housekeeping: We provide basic cleaning and offer to make the beds before 11am (upon request). Sheets and towels will only be pre-washed before arrival.

This is the perfect place if you would like to be surrounded by beauty, calm and serenity for a few days. A friend and I stayed at La Finca San Cayetano with our daughters and we all fell in love with the place. Although a bit off the beaten path, it is a drive away to La Fortuna, the hotsprings and Arenal among other many beautiful sites. The children could safely explore the land and meet the horses as well. We were also greeted by monkeys and a couple of deers in our back yard in the morning! I would recommend this beautiful place im a heartbeat.

Isabel's home is just as gorgeous in real life as it is in the photos. The farm is a beautiful and quiet get away. Isabel responds quickly is and thorough with communication. She sent us some tips for some great places around Costa Rica. The homemade breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. Though we did not meet Isabel she made sure to call and check in to make sure everything was going well. Margarita was able to greet us upon arrival and she was very sweet and welcoming. She also gave us a tour of the farm. The wildlife surrounding the house is very cool. We got to see the peacock dance around the backyard along with many other exotic birds.

Isabel's house is magnificent and comfortable, although you do need to rent a good car to be able to stay here. We got a really nice 4x4 from Enterprise in San Jose (Diego and others speak very good english and are great to work with). Staying at Isabel's house was a great place to explore San Carlos including Biothermales and Catarata Toro which we loved most of all. The house has everything a family needs to come "home" from day trips and feel safe and comfortable. My parents who are 70 were with us and staying at Isabel's was a great value place for them to feel completely at ease in a different culture. Which is another thing I liked about Isabel's house. Because you are not surrounded by tourists everywhere my kids had a more truly Tica experience. We'd definitely book it again if we ever get back to that beautiful part of Costa Rica.

The best I've ever had. Even if Isabel wasn't there - all the neighbours helped us. The house is just amazing, so is Isabel.

This is a really nice place to relax and enjoy a beautiful house and garden in a tropical setting, complete with plenty of wildlife. Compared with other accommodations in Costa Rica, this one really is good value. A little off the tourist track, but not too far to drive to various attractions. The hosts are really nice, went out of their way to support us when our son had a health issue. We hired the breakfast cook to also cook us dinners, a good option.

This place was great. A very comfortable and clean house in a secured environnement. The back yard was awesome, with its trees, plants, MANY birds, howler monkeys, etc. The breakfast was very good with a variety of fruits, eggs, pinto gallo and more every morning. What a wonderful way to start the day! Only drawback: although the house could easily accomodate the 6 of us, the dinner table is built for 4 only. The location is pretty good and offered driving access within an hour to many interesting places like La Paz and Del Toro Waterfalls, Arenal and Poas Volcanos, Tirimbina Reserve (very enjoyable early morning bird guided tour), Termales del Bosque and more. I highly recommend renting a car however, because you need to drive to all these activities. Isabel and Margarita where available to answer any of our questions. Highly recommended.

I was born, raised, and married in Venecia, San Carlos, Alajuela, Costa Rica. My husband and I moved to the United States in 1978. We were in our mid- twenties with two young children, and pregnant with our third. We raised our kids in Los Angeles and they went on to study and have families of their own- living in both the West and East Coasts. My husband and I dreamed of building a house on the farm I was raised on and where we established our first newly-wed home. In 2013 that dream was realized, and although we are not fully retired yet, we have been visiting our new farm house for a couple weeks at a time. We wish we could enjoy it more, but until that time comes, we aim to have the home occupied and lived-in by sharing it with outside travelers.

This farm is dear to me and my family. Two of my older brothers and four of my sisters have homes nearby. Many of my nephews and nieces have lived on this farm and have gone on to have families of their own. Many have moved to the city or to other countries, but most come back if they are able to, as often as possible. What is so special is that my family loves the farm life so dearly that they have been caring and protecting the land for generations.
