Leme is a residential very safe and quiet area. It is located
near grocery stores, super markets, restaurants and banks.
There are buses to almost everywhere and a bike-rental station right around the corner.
The metro station is six blocks away.
It is located in the heart of Copacabana and depending on
traffic it is 10 to 30 mns drive to the Sugar Loaf cable car,
Corcovado train, Ipanema, Leblon, the city center, Lapa, Flamengo and Jardim Botanico.
You can easily walk to many of these places (Ipanema, Leblon, and Urca)
When you get to the airport you must either pay your taxi before you leave the custom hall from taxi stands that are located before you exit the custom area or ask for directions to the common yellow cabs. The latter are cheaper, but some people prefer to pay more in a fixed price to make sure the taxi drives them straight to their destination.
Do not take cabs any other way...when you exit the custom hall and step in the main airport hall, disregard any offer from people offering to take you. Just head towards the cabs that belong to the company that you booked your taxi from (option 1) or to the queue for the cheaper yellow cabs (ption 2) outside the airport's main hall.
If you don't have reales, change no more than 100 usd at the bank at the airport. In the city you can get a better exchange rate, especially if you arrive from Monday to Saturday..
Rio de Janeiro is an informal city...
You will either wear tennis shoes or use flip flops.
The temperature at this time of the year is high, so bring light clothes (t-shirts, jeans, shorts, bermudas, trunks, bikinis, etc.).
For the beach, do like cariocas, get a sarong instead of a towel.
But when it rains, the temperature can drop drastically so you should also bring with you
a couple of sweat shirts, things you can add as layers depending on the cold, a light rain coat, an umbrella and shoes that can take the rain.
I am a former UN staff and an artist. I have been living in Rio de Janeiro for the last 40 years. I love this city and will be happy to assist you during your stay here.
