La Shaque is located in Umngazana, a quiet coastal village on the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It is a rustic holiday cottage that was designed and hand built with the help of Wilson and Ivy (who work at the cottage daily) and other Xhosa locals. It's a truly unique place offering a rural beach holiday experience whether you enjoy angling, hiking the coastal pathways, swimming in rockpools, chilling on the deck or taking afternoon naps. Please read carefully before booking.

Die Unterkunft
This rustic yet comfortable holiday home was built from wattle and daub. Ivy and Wilson are two Xhosa locals who take care of the cottage - their service is inclusive in your nightly rate. Ivy will arrive daily to wash dishes, make beds and sweep floors during your stay. She can also fillet fresh fish, cook and shell mussels and clean crayfish upon request. Wilson is an excellent fisherman and gillie, who also oversees maintenance and access.

The deck offers sweeping views of the coastline perfect for alfresco dining, morning coffees, reading a book or just watching the ocean and its tidal, ship or dolphin/whale activity. In cooler and/or windy weather, retreat to the lounge for comfort and shelter where the view through windows is a close 2nd to the deck. It is decorated in truly beach cottage style with cloths, beach collectables and crafts made by locals. With cellphone signal being limited, build puzzles on the table (a few available in the cupboard) or borrow a book during your stay from the bookshelf.

The kitchen is well equipped in terms of cutlery, crockery, glassware and cookware. We recommend planning meals that are best cooked on a stovetop, or on the braai (bring your own charcoal/ briquettes, firelighters etc.). While there is a gas oven, it is small and hard to monitor the exact temperature - we find it is best to use it as a warming drawer on low heat, or for baked veg at a higher heat.

The downstairs of the cottage has the lounge, bedrooms 1 & 2 (each with double beds and latch doors), bathroom (incl. shower, bath and 1 flush toilet), kitchen and scullery. The stairs near the cottage entrance goes up to the loft with bedrooms 3 and 4 on either end which have the single beds. These bedrooms are made private by curtain dividers. Each of the bedrooms offer sufficient shelving to unpack your clothes along with some hangers and hooks.

As mentioned, Wilson is an enthusiastic angler and will willingly go fishing on your behalf to try catch you some fresh fish using his own rod but ensure to bring along some fishing tackle (eg. hooks, sinkers, bait). If you are keen on fishing, Wilson will take you to fishing spots and serve as an excellent gillie. Please ensure to bring your own rods and license to fish with along with the necessary fishing tackle - there is space in the lounge to store your rods during your stay.

Hier wirst du sein

Mqaleni, Eastern Cape, Südafrika

As you drive into Umngazana village (shown as Mqaleni on the map), you will notice many of the locals huts and homesteads. The Xhosa community of Umngazana are friendly and welcoming.
Please do greet the locals you drive or walk by - either with a wave and/or "hello". You can also greet in isiXhosa:
"Mholo" when greeting a single person
or
"Mholweni" when greeting a group of people

Visitors to the area means economic possibility for the community, such as for Wilson and Ivy as local hosts during your stay. There is also possibility for mussel, oyster and crayfish (seasonal only) sellers, craft sellers or perhaps for someone that can organise boat access for you so you can go on the river cruise. While these latter options are your choice and you should not feel pressured to have to purchase. However please do not pick your own mussels, oysters or dive for crayfish as the locals have limited opportunity to earn money and often it is their only source of income. Their seafood prices are very affordable, so please support them.

Other than fresh seafood, we recommend guests buy all their groceries and meal supplies at home. The nearest large grocery stores (Spar) are in Port St Johns (the closest 45min drive) or Umtata (over an hour's drive). As the cottage water supply comes from rain water tanks on the property to use for shower, loo and cleaning etc, we suggest that guests bring their own drinking water as we cannot guarantee water quality for guests during their stay. In case you run out, the local shop in Umngazana village stocks a few very basic supplies incl 5L spring water. You are more than welcome to send Ivy to the store with some cash to make a purchase on your behalf, and she will return with your items and your change.

Refuse removal is unfortunately not a running service at Umngazana. So we require guest participation in our own system in order to support the cleanliness of the village, and La Shaque's footprint in it.
FOOD WASTE - this is collected in a container in the scullery, and Ivy will take this to feed her pigs.
PAPER & BURNABLE WASTE - the smaller of the two large bins which does not have bin bag is for this waste, which Ivy can burn to reduce the remaining waste.
ALL OTHER REFUSE & WASTE - goes in the big bin with the bin bag. At the end of your stay, Wilson will bring these to your car when you pack for you to take with. Whether you take it all the way home, or find a serviced municipal bin or official dump site on the way, is up to you when it comes to disposal.
