This fully furnished monthly rental unit makes for a very comfortable and interesting stay in Astoria. The building is an old structure perched in a historic neighborhood a couple of blocks above downtown Astoria. It's a perfect location if you like to be in the heart of town, walk along the river, and access the Sunday market.

Die Unterkunft
Constructed around 1860-1880, these three houses were once Chinese workforce housing located in Chinatown Astoria. They are the only remaining buildings from a neighborhood that no longer exists. During the late 1800's, the Chinese were probably the largest ethnic group in Astoria and provided the large workforce needed for the fishing and timber industries. In 1922 most of Astoria was burnt to the ground by a devastating fire. As a result, housing was in very short supply and the city needed rebuilding. These three structures survived the flames, were pulled up the hill on skidders, and connected together to form a triplex. They then continued to serve as workforce housing for the following 100 years.

Steep painted wooden stairs flanked by a large steel handrail go up to this airy unit. The steepness of the stairs might not be suitable to everyone. The loft is brightened by two operable 4'x4' skylights, accent lighting, ceiling lights on dimmer switches, and bright walls.

A large commercial style kitchen is located on the south end. It is a pleasure to use for preparing all sorts of yummy dishes. The work zones have stainless steel prep tables with direct task lighting under the shelves. Plenty of outlets are in close reach for any device. All the appliances have been recently updated and function well. Please note that there is no dishwasher. On the south facing kitchen wall there is a fully functioning historic double hung window unit. Both the upper and lower cedar sash have thick cotton rope hanging from pulleys attached to counter weights to help them glide up and down the window frame. This historic accent, along with the skylight, ventilate the kitchen with ease. For easy cleaning, all the floors are smooth hard surfaces. Please bring all your basic food supplies.

The center of the loft is occupied by the living area. Here there is a comfortable sofa placed under a large skylight where you can sit to enjoy a movie on a 55" Bluetooth wall mounted smart TV. Behind the sofa is a small WC. In the northwest corner there is a small desk for setting up your computer and electronic gear while the southwest corner has a large table and benches for dining.

The walls all have new 5/8 thick drywall applied on top of the original wooden ones. The finished surface has been painted a glowing white. Thick beveled edged wood ceiling paneling in both the living room and bedroom have a matching color. The ceilings are occasionally dotted with recessed lighting. The multiple lighting options in conjunction with the playful white surface color helps the space feel cool in the summer and cheerful in the winter.

Some of the windows and doors are accented with reclaimed and naturally finished old growth vertical grain Douglas fir wood. Our local historian thinks the windows could be the oldest in town. Please notice how some sash sit very close to the floor. This can pose a hazard for both animals and children if not careful.

The refinished rough cut shelving planks are artifacts from the building. They were stripped from the building's interior skin to create a utility chase. When looking closely, you can see where the boards are freckled from tiny wall cloth pins and scarred by the monstrous circular saw blades used to rip the massive logs. In the 1800's it was common to use fabric or heavy paper to cover wall planking to refine the finish. Today's trend is to appreciate the wood from the ancient forests.

Expansive views to the north can be enjoyed while sitting down in the living room or just hanging out in bed. In the bedroom/bathroom area there are additional views to the West and East. From the kitchen, the view is of the historic homes and church across the street.

For heating, there is a free standing gas powered heating stove placed in the center of the loft. The controls for this unit sit low on the back side. This type of heat, along with the insulated ceiling, helps keep the unit very comfortable and cozy during the winter months and power outages. The bedroom and bathroom also have additional electric wall heaters connected to a wall thermostat.

The north end of the unit is where the bedroom and bathroom are located. Originally, this area had three very modest bedrooms partitioned with 2x12 planks standing vertically. There were probably two workers to a room. Now, the room has a sitting chair, small dresser, bed, laundry space, and bathroom. The bed is a platform attached to the wall and capped with a firm mattress. Next to the bedroom is the bathroom with a large walk-in shower, W/D, vintage sink, small closet, and WC. Please note, there is no door isolating the bedroom from the living space. This unit is one large (1050 sqft) sprawling space with partition walls. The two WC do have doors.

Other things to note:
- A shoe closet is situated at the the top of the stairs.

I'm a native Oregonian living in Astoria. I moved to town in 2001 and spend much of my time restoring old buildings. My family and I live in an old Italianate near the heart of downtown. We enjoy hosting guests, breathing fresh ocean air, hearing sea lions bark, waking up to a gorgeous views, eating fresh food, and traveling to foreign lands.
