Der Wohnraum

Artist's Loft, with its incomparable view of the Harbor, Sailboats, Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station, is the only private home rental in Downtown Grand Marais on the Harbor. The view is what it is all about!

Artist's Loft is right in the heart of downtown Grand Marais on beautiful Harbor Park. It is a great home-base for enjoying the gentle activity of the Village or easily getting away for day trips to the BWCA. Drive up the Gunflint Trail for day adventures and hikes, but stay at the Artist Loft to experience all that downtown has to offer...just footsteps out the front door.

Artist's Loft has two bedrooms and one bathroom with a claw foot tub and a view of the Harbor. The Artist Loft is an upper unit with beautiful views & there is also a lower unit (The Storefront) where guests also stay. Both units have private, separate & secure entrances. Ask about renting both units for larger groups. Both units joined together can sleep up to 10!!

Even though Artist's Loft is right downtown on the harbor front, it is graced with a gorgeous secluded quiet off street wildflower garden with decks and lounging chairs and tables to relax in the sun or have a intimate outside breakfast lunch or dinner. Cook in with our fully equipped kitchen or get it to go, semi-catered from a choice of several fabulous restaurants. Your own private campfires in the backyard at night. You can even book & rent the backyard for private events, wedding receptions, or any other intimate get-togethers.

In the evening, step right next door to the Gunflint Tavern and enjoy a craft beer at their newly opened brewpub or Mojito in the 'Ravens Nest' lake-view deck and then listen to world class music in the early evening. The music at 'The Tavern' ranges from gentle Gypsy Jazz to Folk and Folk Rock for the occasional night of dancing. Also, the all-new Voyageur Brewing's taproom just opened and is a short 2 block walk!

Wake with the gulls in the morning sun and enjoy the quiet solitude of downtown as it gently comes to life. Walk to The Pie Place, The Crooked Spoon Restaurant, Angry Trout Cafe, Hughies Taco's, The Dockside Fish Market, the Gunflint Tavern, Voyageur Brewing, breakfast at the Blue Water Cafe and Donuts and World's Best Donuts!! All within 1-2 blocks! You have it all at Artists Loft. Oh, and don't forget that Legendary Sven and Ole's Pizza is right up the street.

The thing to remember about Artist's Loft is that every day is a beautiful magical day whether it is sunny and warm or stormy and wild; all year round nature's magic unfolds right in front of you over the greatest of lakes, Lake Superior.

A little History about Artist's Loft:
It was built in the early 1900s by Chet Boisvert. Chet was the village barber and the shop was equipped with showers for the lumberjacks to come in from the woods for a hot shower. He was also an avid Democrat and held party meetings at the Loft on Main Street. In the guest book it was found that his grandchildren had stayed here when our friend Stephen, the previous owner, first opened Artists Loft. They left an entry in the guestbook telling of heartwarming memories such as...

- ' The last time I slept in this bedroom was 43 years ago. I can still remember hearing my people cheering at 6 am when they announced the Victory of Harry Truman over Dewey in 1948!'

- 'I remember watching, from the front windows, pulp boats loading logs from the thousands of logs floating in the harbor'

You can still feel those memories at Artist's Loft as you gaze out the windows and still see fishing boats and sailboats bobbing in the breezes.

Come share the Magic!

You have to try this place to believe it! Joel is a wonderful host and the loft is outfitted with all of the essential and has has a warm vintage vibe.. We wondered why it had taken us so long to come to Grand Marais. Wonderful stay, going to come back.

This was a stellar place - perfect for us in every way. The location is a 5 minute walk or less to just about anywhere in town. The apartment itself is clean and decorated with color and all kinds of interesting books and artifacts. The back patio is equally funky and delightful. The kitchen is well appointed with decent pots and pans, full-sized fridge, stove & microwave, coffee grinder (we brought our own coffee press), nice dishes and silverware, even foil and plastic wrap for leftovers. The bed is Goldilocks comfy - not too hard, not too soft. Oh, and Lake Superior is just across the street, visible and audible from the living room and front bedroom. We spent much of our time sitting in front of the windows, reading and listening to the sound of the waves and the people going by below. We texted Joel on arrival and he responded immediately with a welcome and an invitation to reach out if we needed anything at all. We didn't - everything was already there. We loved this place and would definitely stay here again the next time we're in Grand Marais.

Amazing location right in the middle of Grand Marais, and a beautiful space that's actually bigger than it looks in the pictures! Super easy finding and getting into the unit. The space was fun, colorful, and very clean. Comfortable beds. Fans in the rooms, which were nice as it got warm during our late August stay. The kitchen was fully usable and we cooked some great meals with ingredients from the Co-op just down the street. Be aware that you're *right* in the middle of town, so through your open windows you'll hear seagulls, Gunflint Tavern-goers, buskers of varying talent levels, dogs barking, etc. It all gets quiet at night, but if you're a nap taker or early to bed and you need quiet to sleep, consider bringing a white noise machine (the fans were good for this) or earplugs. We really loved the Artists Loft and we would definitely stay here again. Can't wait for our next visit to Grand Marais!

The Artist's Loft and Grand Marais provided the perfect vacation experience! The proximity to Lake Superior is perfect - you can see the beautiful blue water upon waking and walk across the street throughout the day to enjoy the beach. We particularly enjoyed the downtown location and easy access to the local restaurants and bars that provide local, sustainable fare, as well as performances by local musicians. The apartment itself is welcoming and adorable. When not exploring the local attractions we enjoyed staying in and cooking our own food while listening to the retro albums provided. The back yard is beyond description (check out the pics) and a great place to relax with family and friends - the shade and cool breeze made this a favorite spot on one of the warmer days. Joel is a gracious and generous host - the apartment is not only perfect but I found some thoughtful extras as well (such as condiments in the fridge) that came in handy when I discovered I had forgotten mustard. We will definitely choose the Artist's Loft as a future vacation get away in Grand Marais!

We loved our stay at the artist loft! It’s been two weeks and I’m still thinking about how gorgeous and peaceful it was. It made for an awesome creative retreat. The space was really cozy, comfortable and full of charm. The loft had a great collection of books, records and games that kept us busy when we were indoors. Joel was extremely responsive and helpful—he also provided great recommendations for things to do and places to see. I would recommend this rental to anyone and can’t wait to go back.

Working with Joel was great. He was easy to get a hold of and willing to go out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. The loft is really cute and fun. The building is old but the apartment has been updated to provide modern amenities without losing the old world charm. There's not a ton of insulation between the bottom unit ("The Storefront") and the upper unit ("The Artist Loft") so we could hear our neighbors when they were loud but we didn't mind! This loft is right next door to the Gunflint Tavern which has great food, beer, cocktails, and live music. Lake Superior is right across the street from the loft, you can see it from the living room windows and it is gorgeous! There are lots of little shops and restaurants within walking distance of this loft. I highly recommend this rental to anyone who wants to experience a taste of life in Grand Marais.

We had such a wonderful time at the Artist Loft! The loft itself was warm, clean, and inviting. It had everything we needed and some fun extras (records and board games were great fun on a chilly evening). The location couldn't have been better (we didn't get in the car for our whole stay), and the view of the lake and the lighthouse was gorgeous. We can't wait to go back!
