First the good: Elodie was great. We spent Christmas and New Years at the house and she was easily reachable when there were issues around the property or if we needed recommendations of restaurants and things to do. The house is located just outside of the "downtown" (10 minute walk) and a quick walk to the beach (5 minutes) with a number of restaurants right at the end of the street. It's a gated community of similar houses, although this unit is set off the main path with its own front yard, offering more privacy. We spent countless hours on the huge covered front porch -- eating meals on the outdoor table and lounging on the couch. There are ceiling fans everywhere (both indoor and out) providing a nice breeze as needed. The three bedrooms and two baths were comfortable for this family of four traveling with one grandmother. There is only air conditioning in one bedroom (which we gave to grandma) but the rest of us were fine without it. Two bedrooms have queen beds and one has two twin beds. As is custom in the DR, the "windows" are screens with shutters -- no glass -- but rain never made its way in and we saw very few critters inside. There is a symphony of frogs, geckos and crickets at night, plus the occasional rain storm. Beds were comfortable, and there were both beach and bath towels provided. The TV with satellite service worked well with a good selection of international channels. There was a gas BBQ grill off the porch that was really nice to have. The complex felt safe, with a gated entrance and a guard on duty at night. There's a washer, but no dryer (large drying rack provided, and clothesline out back) and a cleaning crew came by twice, which was great.
The not so great: The dishwasher didn't work, which was a real inconvenience since we were there for 9 nights and cooked half of our meals. Elodie provided a "mifi" so that we could have wifi access, but data was limited and it was slow. We were able to use it for some TripAdvisor research now and again, and the occasional email check, but if you're used to high speeds and media streaming, you'll have to adjust your expectations. The kitchen is well stocked, but a lot of the supplies (pans, knives, etc) are in need of an upgrade. We also had some trouble with the hot water but Elodie managed to find someone to come fix it on Christmas day(!) which was great. It would have been nice to have a dryer, especially for towels, but we lived without it.
All in all this is a solid place to stay and once the dishwasher is replaced or fixed it will be even better!
