Scout's hostel is fantastic! It's in a wonderfully secluded spot right on the river and in the nature. It attracts the off-beaten path and like minded travelers to have wonderful chats and adventures with. His space creates a wonderful and positive place to clear your mind.

This place did not disappoint. The views were amazing. I chose to stay in the mix dorm room. It was my first time staying in a hostel environment and I loved it. All my roommates were friendly and everyone got along amazingly. Scout was a superb host, he provided breakfast in the morning and a shuttle to central Nikko. He would also pick me up from the station. The dinner he made was amazing (I had both the pizza and vegan soup). I also rented a bike and rode to a location and it was amazing. All in all, I do recommend this place if you're looking to make new friends from all over the world. Thanks scout, will definitely be staying here again if I come back to Nikko!

Amazing hostel!! Had such a great stay here. Scout is an awesome host who works very hard to help out each and every guest. The hostel itself is a bit out of the way from Nikko in a gorgeous location by the river, and Scout runs shuttles every morning and evening to pick up/drop off guests which makes it super convenient. He has tonnes of maps and advice about what to do around the area as well. The breakfast he makes in the morning was amazing and super filling! Also the other guests that stayed were really cool too, everyone was social and got along really well. The facilities themselves are great, really clean and well thought out. Make sure you use the shower room to the right at least once with the awesome view of the river! Only wish my stay had been longer, highly recommend!

The location is beautiful, with nice walks all around, and Scout really goes above and beyond to make sure his guests have a good time. I can't believe he runs the whole place by himself! He's also a really decent cook. But let him know what you want to check out in Nikko (the hiking is easy with unbelievable views) and he'll make sure you get there and have the info you need to make it happen. Keep in mind that you're in the country, if you have a train to catch hell get you there and his shuttle bus is always on time, but otherwise things run on country time so relax and enjoy some downtime in a beautiful part of rural Japan. (I'm only mentioning this because another reviewer found the looseness of the "schedule" a bit frustrating. If, like me, you want to visit the country to get away from the more strict regiments of the urban areas you couldn't do much better than here). I'm sure the overall atmosphere of the hostel changes depending on the other guests but it was a warm and friendly group all around when I stayed there and I will definitely be back next time I'm in Japan.

Good stay, with shuttle service. Would be good in summer to swim in the river.

This is by far the BEST hostel I have ever stayed in. It's laid out in the backwoods of Nikko on a beautiful river. Scout is naturally so hospitable. He was diligent in responding to my questions prior to arrival; he was punctual and dependable on picking up at the train station (which it's amazing he offers that service); he offered guidance with navigating Nikko and pointed me in some of the prettiest spots to visit; plus, I sprained my ankle while I was there and he was so thoughtful in helping me hobble around and even made a stop at the drug store to help me bandage it. The best hostel in Nikko and Japan for that matter! Make it a point to visit!!!

Scout's place is great, its in a really nice location out of the way and his pick up and shuttle service will take you to the places you'll want to see around Nikko. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
