Emmanuelle was out of town on the dates we were there so we had to figure out everything about the apartment ourselves. She left the key in the bakery next door for us to collect which was fine but the front door was very hard to open so we spent about an hour trying to get in. It was a different room to the one in the pictures and the bed was just a mattress on the floor. We had to find and put the sheets on the bed ourselves which wasn't ideal. The room was nice but there was a very noisy road outside. The apartment was nice too with a good living room and lovely balconies. However, it didn't seem like a much of an effort had been made to clean up the place for us as it wasn't hugely clean or tidy. It couldn't have been in a better in a neighbourhood - the artists quarter - which had lots of really good bars, restaurants, shops and bookshops. It was a good price as well, so overall good value for money.
I did not meet Emmanuelle at all as 2h before arrival, I received an email to pick up keys at a bar nearby. Thankfully, I checked my email with the free wifi at the train station at St Charles Gare. Unfortunately, when I arrived at the bar as instructed, no one knew about a key & I was stranded for 2h as there was no response to my email, SMS & calls went to voicemail. A bar patron was kind enough to call, leave a voicemail & SMS in addition to us doing the same but still, there was no response until the next morning on instructions to leave the key. I assume there was a miscommunication or she didn't not realize I was stuck outside. I only managed to get into the building by sitting at the door & waiting for a fellow neighbour to come home & open the building door by chance. This was rather unnerving & wasted precious time for me to explore the city. I almost left for a hostel as a last resort. When I finally got into the house, instructions were clear on wifi & where to get sheets (written on a paper) but I had to put on my own sheets, figure out the house independently. No towels were provided. While eclectic in style & very spacious, the house did not feel clean or neat, but for the price this can be tolerated and I was relieved to leave after 1 night. The location was on a high floor overlooking a street with many bars & a convenience shop to get water & essentials. Overall, the logistics was the major downer as this was the start to my French Riviera experience & being stranded outside a building with no help was not a great way to start.
The WORST airbnb experience I ever had. When I arrived to the train station she made me wait for 2 hours not picking up my calls nor replying airbnb messages or sms. The place is so dirty and untidy, it smells like vinegar all over the place. The toilette is a total mess, I didnt have space to put my tooth brush on the table because it was full of her stuff and dirty as well. The shower is leaking water outside to the floor so then you have to dry it. Her attitude is not welcoming at all, when you ask Emanuelle something she replies like you are bothering her or she is doing you a favour. When I arrived the room was not ready, she started changing the sheets in front of me from the night before because the bed was used by 2 guys doing hitchhiking she picked up on the route that day. I think she is not ready to host, she doesnt care enough. Next time I prefer to pay a little more and have a good experience in Marseille.
