Karen is a wonderful host and delightful person!
Her home is charming and historical, with high ceilings, wood floods and interesting quirks (a small closet here, a tucked-away half-bath there).
The bedroom is lovely, with a heavenly mattress and pillows, ceiling fan, big windows, and large closets and dresser for your things. The attached half-bath is perfect for everything but getting a shower (which you can do in the other bathroom, which is also private to you) – it was really beneficial to have two bathrooms when my boyfriend and I were both getting ready in the morning.
A few reviewers complained about the A/C unit outside the window – it kicked on the first night I was there, but it didn't bother me or interrupt my sleep. The third night I was there, my sleep was interrupted ... by loud upstairs neighbors giggling and yelling as they walked up the back staircase, which is also outside the bedroom windows. But, it was a Saturday night after the bars let out (and I hadn't gone to bed much earlier) and only a momentary inconvenience.
Karen is so kind and thoughtful. I took the trip to Dallas to attend a few events (a taping of NPR's "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" and the Dallas Comedy Festival in Deep Ellum), but also because it was my birthday. Karen left a box of chocolate, salted caramels for me with a "Happy Birthday!" note. So sweet!
There are some feline residents on site, too. Which was part of the draw for me (I love cats and don't have any pets right now, sadly). Karen knew I wanted to meet them and she did her darnedest to get them warmed up to me and to be friendly. Some of them did! But, honestly, if I hadn't been purposefully trying to meet (and pet) the cats, I might not have even noticed that they live there. Her house always smelled lovely – no "pet smells." And they hid most of the time. (So, if you're on the fence because of cats – don't worry. Unless you're allergic, because that can't be ignored!) The private room and private bathroom have doors that stay closed and Karen keeps everything very clean! Karen does call for her cats in a sing-song voice when she feeds them (but it was well after we were awake) – also, she's a professional vocalist and music instructor, so it's a lovely voice.
The location is great for being close to downtown, Deep Ellum, Fair Park, and really just about anything in central/east Dallas (SMU, uptown, Knox-Henderson, 75, etc.).
I had a truly wonderful trip and Karen's kindness, warmth and hospitality really made it perfect for me.
Great host, great location, great accommodations, great value! I would definitely stay again. :D
