The cottage has one double and two single beds. There is a small kitchen area with gas stove to make tea and coffee, a western-style bathroom with hot/cold water shower and a veranda with beautiful views across a stream which runs into the local river called Kopai. We can provide information on walks and cycle rides through local tribal villages situated around us.. We can also arrange car and cycle hires. We are located near the Viswabharati University(4kms) which was founded by the famous poet-laurate of India, Rabindranath Tagore. We also provide very good breakfast and supper cooked at home, for an extra cost. Guests are free to mingle with our family and enjoy the garden in a very peaceful atmosphere, no sound pollution and surrounded by nature. Our three children, who are home schooled, are excelent area guides and would love to show you around. Our family guest house located in the rural West Bengal, India is surrounded by lush paddy fields and smiling tribal children is ideal for pondering, or just relaxing and it's proximity to the University makes it easy to access city amenities. We are a good family host. The major attraction around us is ofcourse the tribal villages and a very nice Santali(tribal) museum. There is also the University whose Department of Arts, the Tibetan, Japanese and Chinese Centres are very famous. There's an unique local and indigeneous local craft production and selling place called Amar Kutir which is about 6kms from us. Restaurants are about 3kms from our place. Shops are about 2kms away. The nearby public transit, 8kms away, is the Bolpur train station of the Indian Railways, which connects Calcutta and other major Indian cities quite conveniently.
Our place is easily connected to Calcutta and the University, where various events and cultural activities take place on a regular basis. Our family is culturally and racially mixed, so we understand the Indian and European/American traditions well. Our children are tri-lingual with English as their first and Bengali as their second languages and they speak and understand Santali-the local tribal language- fluently. My wife and I are bi-lingual and English and Bengali are our languages.
No loud music after 10pm. Please be friendly with our cats and dogs. And if ordering food from our family kitchen for breakfast and supper, adhere to the food menu. We have quite a large garden and a vegetable garden where guests are welcome to walk through and pick fruits or vegetables and eat them! We home-school our three children and guests can join us in teaching or pass on any expertise that they might have. We also run a resource center called Suchana for very marginalised Adivasi(tribal) kids. It's open 7days a week for 11months. It's located about 200meters from our hosue and guests are very welcome to visit the Center and mingle with the teachers and the kids.
I was a documentary film maker and love to cook, enjoy reading and the other arts. Home schooling my children is a challenge that I love. Enjoy budget travelling and passionate about music.
But my main concern is about the tribal kids in our area, especially about their primary education and health issues. We run a resource centre called Suchana which mainly caters to tribal kids.
