Do you want to live in the country, but be six blocks from campus? This listing is for one bedroom in our rustic/hip cottage in Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto. The cottage has 3 Airbnb guest rooms total, and a shared bathroom, kitchen, and huge garden.
The "Cyclotron room" is a private bedroom with a twin-size bed which comfortably sleeps one.
(Please click "More+" to read this section fully. It has info about booking, and about what it is like at our friendly, clean, bohemian oasis.)
The bed and bedding (cotton sheets, down comforter) are all very new, as are provided towels. This room has two shady windows, and is cozy, clean, quiet, warm, and comfortable. There is also a closet, a writing desk, and a heater. The room is on the main floor, off the central hallway adjacent the living room, the full shared bathroom (victorian tub), and the kitchen.
You have access to the whole house and the huge, sunny garden, with trees, flowers, and patios. The large house set-back gives you privacy and quiet in a country setting, right in the middle of town, in the heart of North Berkeley close to everything: BART, UC campus, Andronico's, the Cheeseboard Collective, the original Peet's, Chez Panisse, Cesar, Saul's, Cafe Gratitude, Guerilla Cafe, North Berkeley Farmer's Market, and Gourmet Ghetto restaurants. The house has a WalkScore of 92. (12 minute walk to BART, 6 blocks to UC, 3 blocks to center of Gourmet Ghetto.)
Allen Ginsberg might have slept here, had he slept around: we're two doors from where he was inspired to write "Howl," in a similar vintage cottage. His no longer exists. We believe in Meritocracy, here in Berkeley, and we fly the American flag with pride. If you love freedom, democracy, and liberty, you'll feel safe and welcome here in Berkeley, USA!
The house was built in 1904 and has been remodeled bit by bit from the 30's on up to the 80's. Quirky details are everywhere: wavy glass, painted wainscoting, redwood trim, plaster walls, cool period ridge skylights, oak and wide-plank-fir wood floors, cozy dormer windows, a black-n-white kitchen floor, knotty pine kitchen cathedral ceiling, and clear-pine and maple baking center.
The house is fully furnished, and has WiFi.
This house is the real deal. It's an old wooden gem with some history. As Stevie Wonder says "Her clothes are old, but never hardly dirty."
The house sits in a comfortable homesteader's plot, as it sat for over a hundred years. From the outside, in a large open green space, you can see the original homestead two story cottage, and then the additions. From the inside, you get turned around a bit. It is cozy living in the house, but expansive outdoors. As Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck said, "the House is a place to escape the garden when it is raining." To that end, gorgeous divided-light ridge skylights and interior light-ways adorn most rooms. It is light filled, even on foggy mornings.
Well-stocked kitchen, full bathroom with victorian tub, living room, extensive garden. Kitchen has eat-in nook, separate baking area, granite counters, black and white floor, wood cathedral ceiling, large skylight, dishwasher, gas stove, washer-dryer. Living room has wide Fir floors, traditional trim, and a woodstove.
1) This listing: the "Cyclotron Room", a small 10'x10' downstairs (main floor) shady bedroom, no view, which sleeps one in the "Twin-size" bed.
2) The "Allen Ginsberg Room" is a 20'x14' room upstairs with a wonderful, southern-exposure, wide dormer with a sylvan view and a more traditional bedframe with "Full-size" bed. (Separate listing, not included with this room: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/602784 )
3) "Treehouse Studio" is a 11'x12' room upstairs with southern exposure and sylvan view plus a sleeping nook with skylight that is part of this room and fits a "Full-size" bed (see photos), and private half-bathroom. (Separate listing, not included with this room: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/730138 )
There are four steps up to the property, then a 100' level brick path, then 4 steps up into the house. Bathroom on this level. Up one flight of stairs with two bends are the two larger bedrooms.
When we rent the individual rooms, there will never be more than 6 people total, and probably more like 3 or 4 people total in the house.
This is a household. You'll be sharing the living room, kitchen and bathroom with the house. Everyone has private bedrooms. We are very accommodating, inviting hosts. The house has a bohemian vibe, but is generally pretty quiet, and always very, very clean. We'll work out hours with you to accommodate your needs. In general, things quiet down around 10 PM, but folks who stay here tend to go out on the town or be up late, so there will still be coming and goings until midnight. You are welcome to have friends over to hang out in the garden, house, living room, cook meals in the kitchen, etc. If you have requests or needs, please just let us know.
For heating, the house has a gas wall heater, electric heaters for the bedrooms, and a Jotul woodstove. (These modern, airtight woodstoves are used throughout Scandinavia and New England, and we have one of the same model in our other property in Vermont, where it happily heats a 2000 square foot space with 25' ceilings, even during the cold Vermont winters.) The stove lights in about 15 minutes. We provide dry cord-wood.
Most of our guests are visiting for a week or so, often to do visiting stints at Cal, so we tend to book those first. Then one- and two-night stays we book a week or so out. Even two weeks out, if we have a booking on one side within a few days, we'll go ahead and book you. You are welcome to check our calendar from this listing, click on "Check In" or "Check Out" to pop up the calendar widget. From there, there are little arrows that let you go forward and back a month. The same thing happens if you find the link called "View Calendar".
There is no off-street parking. You can park on the street in any one spot for 2 hours during 8AM-7PM, outside these hours it is OK. So you have to move by 10 AM, and can return at 5pm. If you need to keep the car longer, you can either move it to another spot, or look for non-permit spots between 1 and 6 blocks away.

We generally are staying in the Treehouse Studio room, upstairs. We'll be either in the garden, or in the micro-cottage in the garden, or the living room or the kitchen. On cold evenings We'll build a fire in the living room, and this usually draws folks in for conversation, music, or reading by the fire. As hosts for many years, we generally sense which guests like to chat, and which guests would just prefer the space they need to relax.
