Cannot recommend Laaji and his wife Karen's home enough. Thank you both for opening up your home and making us feel so warm and welcome you both went over and above anything we could have asked for. So spotless and clean it made it that much more comfortable for my family and I. The food Karen cooked us was so fresh and amazing I think she has turned us into vegetarians! Location is just beautiful and serene with the river running through they have such a magical spot. Locals are all so friendly I wish we had stayed longer! Thank you both for opening up your home to us we are going to miss your beautiful babies and hope to be back again.

Thanks to Laaji & his family, we had memorable moments... trekking the Blue Mountains' rainforest, swimming alone in the Swift river close by, chatting with Laagi and enjoying simple tasty local food. What else could you ask for? Wi-Fi you'd say, then just forget it! You're there to forget everything and experience the basics of happiness. Laaji, you live in an incredible environment. Please keep it like that. Natural, authentic and accessible. I don't know when, but sure we'll be back with the kids.

5 stars are not enough. This is definetly the most beautiful place on earth we have ever been. The mixture of overwhelming nature, peacefulness, fresh fruit, kind persons, a loving and lovely family, good music and easy-going was perfect for us. Nature - this is feeling deep in a djungle and at the same time findind a wide garden (around the rather big and beautiful house) the river that cools you down (oh this river... we will remind it all our life) with its crystal-water, colored stones, natural and wide deep pools, lots of fireflies in the night, astonishing fresh air and sunrises in the mornings, droll geckos running and jumping around, the freshest and no-touched drinking water everywere around you coming straight from the Blue Mountains... this is how we imagined garden Eden. Nothing dangerous here, you can really feel free! (But the mosquitos.. don't forget a good spray and they will keep away). Chicken running the road up and down, a donkey passing early in the morning, no cars, no internet, no unnatural noises, little birds, butterflies... Complete peacefulness - There are very few people. If you want to feel like the only persons in the world just go upside the river. There's nothing! You remember the movie "The Blue Lagoon"? You will be able to forget everything. Just let all flow, absorb all the energy and you will feel like little children again. Fresh fruit - everything from and everywhere at the surroundings! fresh coconuts, coconut water to drink, coconut jelly to eat, fresh pineapples, pineapple juice, plantanes, bread fruit, lots of vegetables, fresh cane juice and much more. It's just delightful! The offered meals are vegan and they were so good that I did not even think about meat. Eating what is arround you and fresh made gives you so much satisfaction. kind persons, a loving and lovely family We took a wrong way when we arrived there late in the evening. ALL people from the other districts helped us willingly and even asked to follow their car so that we could drive easier (be careful driving, as there are lots of potholes). During the day it's easy to find. All people we met after Hope Bay are helpful and kind. Some might be not used to talk to "strangers" and might therefore be unsure... just spread good vibrations and they will all come back to you :) Nearby the house everyone (who's not many :)) knows each other - just feel like at home. Laaji and his family reached our heart. His two beautiful boys are happy children and just so cute... I wanted to take them with me. There's a deep love in this house and all members that makes you feel so comfortable. We couldn't avoid tearing up when we had to leave. We will keeping on desiring to be there and will for sure return as soon as we can. A warm embrace to you, family. We are proud of having found...

We found it to be as the other reviews have said, a very scenic, lovely place to stay and Laaji and Karen make good hosts. We ate there two evening we stayed and enjoyed the food. The first evening we ate at Sa Soom Ba that is on the A4 near the turn off for the eco retreat and liked it there too. The house is a good half hour drive from the main road, although most of the road is in reasonable condition compared to other roads we have driven on. After rain the river might be too fast to swim in, but we managed a couple of dips and a walk along the track that follows the river for a couple of hours. A very relaxing stay!

I'll start by saying pick a dry time of year as the river was hit with a lot of rain before we arrived and we couldn't get up the mountain. Once we arrive though, wow! The river and the property is spectacular, you really have to experience it yourself. Laaji and family were all so lovely and made us feel right at home. It is quite a fair way up the mountain so factor that in if you need/want to go into town or other places it's a bit of a drive. Definitely worth it though

Nutzerprofil von Tulla And Laaji

The Portland Riverside Retreat team is a family one.

Tulla is Laaji's sister. She is not based at the retreat, but she works remotely, helping with all the bookings and reservations; she will be the first point of contact who will help you plan your stay and happily answer any questions you may have.

Laaji and his wife Karen are the retreat's main hosts who will welcome you to the retreat and help with everything from providing meals to recommending local attractions.

Laaji and Karen are a friendly and fun-loving young couple who enjoy creating new vegetarian dishes as well as making the most out of the great outdoors through practicing yoga and hiking in the surrounding mountains. They are both keen farmers who love nature and spend their spare time cultivating fruits and vegetables on their eco-farm.
