Carla and Avio's house is as described - 3.5 storeys (with a toilet and wash basin in the loft above the bedroom on level 3) situated right in the square of the small town of Bardine San Terenzo. The road is surprisingly busy, even at night, but parking either at the front door or in the town square is always available. The bed is comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped for self catering. Unfortunately there is no reliable wifi connection in the house - the thick walls stop transmission from Carla's next door home, so despite attempts by Avio and the neighbours, a signal inside the house could not be established. We were occasionally able to pick up a weak signal from one neighbour but it was seldom available. Not a problem if you are looking for a complete break, but 2 weeks of "difficult" communication with friends and family on the other side of the world was a real issue for us!! Carla and Avio are generous hosts, delivering figs, plums, tomatoes, home made wine and other tasty treats throughout our stay. Carla made a number of suggestions of places to visit. On our last night we spent a pleasant few hours with them both on their deck, sharing a couple of bottles of Avio's wine and talking about village life and life in NZ - although we speak no Italian, off-line (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Translate assisted communication! Having spent 2 weeks in the area, our recommendations for guests with a little time include: Carrara marble mine - a real highlight for us (make sure you do both the 4 x 4 ride up to the top of the mine and the cave tour - both different and very good), Lucca is very pretty and makes a nice day trip, also Barga, which had a vibrant farmers market when we visited on Saturday. We caught the train from La Spezia to visit the 5 towns of Cinque Terre - being mid-July it was extremely crowded, but great to see. Other places worth visiting include the sea-side towns of Portovenere, Portofino, San Terenzo and Lerici; Massa, Sarzana, Parma and Fozdinovo were also good places to visit. Thank you Carla and Avio for your hospitality.
