Harbourside property, quiet and private yet close to town. Twelve minutes to Port Chalmers and a little further to wilderness beach areas. There's a bus stop conveniently located at the bottom of Adderley Terrace and a well-maintained cycle track directly below this historic 1880s house. Well-established garden with indigenous plants, native birds and views across the water to the Otago peninsula. A much-loved, warm lap of a house.

Guests are encouraged to enjoy the garden and the home's communal spaces; the studio operates as both a private and collaborative work space. I am generally working on some or other project and welcome creative exchange and conversation with visitors to the house.

The house sits on a small hillside promontory which means that, while there are neighbours nearby, it is also very private. The garden is lush and well-sheltered from wind. Among its many native plants (Nikau palms, Lancewoods, Cabbage trees, native clematis, renga-renga, Chilean gunnera, etc...) are four beautiful, large and very old (protected) trees.

There is easy bus or taxi access to town and a walking/cycling path alongside the harbour that leads towards the city in one direction and Stl Leonards in the other.

I'm a South African-born artist and writer who traveled to Dunedin in November 1994, the idea being to live and work here for eighteen months. Twenty-three years have passed since then and - well - I'm still here! Truth is, I found my 'turangawaewae' - a Maori word meaning 'my place to stand' - and feel blessed to call Dunedin 'home'. A lively university city on New Zealand's dramatically beautiful South Island, Dunedin was recently awarded International City of Literature status and is surely one of the most picturesque and culturally rich centres in our country. I love living here - love the landscape with its knotty, windswept trees and lichen-encrusted rocks, the quirky birds and native plants. I enjoy traveling to far-away places, too, especially wilderness areas where man's impact on the environment is kept to an absolute minimum. I was fortunate to spend two research seasons in Antarctica (2005 & 2008), the only 'down' side to my time there, this; I get homesick for that place, for the 'music of ice'. Seldom without a notebook or camera, I love walking, music, books and conversation around a table at the end of the day... I very much enjoy meeting people from foreign places and finding the stories we have in common. Airbnb is a great way to network. Hosting visitors - and, too, being hosted by others - has led to many surprising connections and rich conversations. I look forward to meeting you and sharing my home and our beautiful city with you.
