Property and House Description
Huge garden, tall trees, large sunny yard, rose garden, patios, and large house set-back gives you privacy and quiet in a country setting, right in the middle of town, in the heart of North Berkeley close to everything: BART, UC campus, Andronico's, the Cheeseboard Collective, the original Peet's Coffee, Chez Panisse, Cesar, Saul's, Cafe Gratitude, Guerilla Cafe, French Hotel, North Berkeley Farmer's Market, and Gourmet Ghetto restaurants. The house has a WalkScore of 92. (12 minute walk to BART, 6 blocks to UC, 3 blocks to center of Gourmet Ghetto.) Allen Ginsberg might have slept here, had he slept around: we're two doors from where he was inspired to write "Howl," in a similar vintage cottage. His no longer exists.

We believe in Meritocracy, here in Berkeley, and we fly the American flag with pride. If you love freedom, democracy, and liberty, you'll feel safe and welcome here in Berkeley, USA!

The house was built in 1904 and has been remodeled bit by bit from the 30's on up to the 80's. Quirky details are everywhere: wavy glass, painted wainscoting, redwood trim, plaster walls, cool period ridge skylights, oak and wide-plank-fir wood floors, cozy dormer windows, a black-n-white kitchen floor, knotty pine kitchen cathedral ceiling, and clear-pine and maple baking center.

Well-stocked kitchen, full bathroom with victorian tub, living room, extensive garden. Kitchen has eat-in nook, separate baking area, granite counters, black and white floor, wood cathedral ceiling, large skylight, dishwasher, gas stove, washer-dryer. Living room has wide Fir floors, traditional trim, and a woodstove.

The house is fully furnished, and has WiFi.

This house is the real deal. It's an old wooden gem with some history. As Stevie Wonder says "Her clothes are old, but never hardly dirty."

The house sits in a comfortable homesteader's plot, as it sat for over a hundred years. From the outside, in a large open green space, you can see the original homestead cottage, with its additions, and also the micro-cottage and the detached shed. From the inside, you get turned around a bit. It is cozy living in the house, but expansive outdoors. As Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck said, "the House is a place to escape the garden when it is raining." To that end, gorgeous divided-light ridge skylights and interior light-ways adorn most rooms. It is light filled, even on foggy mornings.

1) "Treehouse Studio" is a 11'x12' room upstairs with southern exposure and sylvan view plus a sleeping nook with skylight that is part of this room and fits a "Full-size" bed (see photos), and private half-bathroom. This listing is for this room.

2) the "Allen Ginsberg Room" is a 20'x14' room upstairs with wonderful southern exposure wide dormer with a sylvan view and a more traditional bedframe with "Full-size" bed.

3) the "Cyclotron Room" is a small 10'x10' downstairs (main floor) shady bedroom, sleeps one in the "Twin-size" bed, also good for kids. The "Cyclotron Room" is downstairs, off the central hallway adjacent the living room, full bathroom (victorian tub), and kitchen.

Who's here?

It currently houses us (Laramie, a musician/techie; and Wendi, a literary/free spirit) and has three private bedrooms for rent exclusively to Airbnb guests for short-term stays. Our guests are kind, quiet, clean, worldly, fun people who are all attracted to chill country living three blocks from the best, most natural, sophisticated food available. Often folks are on special assignment or study at U.C. Berkeley, so we really get well-traveled, smart interesting guests. This is a real plus because on any given night folks will hang out in the kitchen or by the woodstove for fascinating conversations, music, and food; or folks might all curl up in their rooms studying up on gravitron calibration, higher math, or zen philosophy.

When we rent the individual rooms, there will never be more than 6 people total, and probably more like 3 or 4 people total in the house.

This is a household. You'll be sharing the living room, kitchen and bathroom with the house. Everyone has private bedrooms. We are very accommodating, inviting hosts. The house has a bohemian vibe, but is generally pretty quiet, and always very, very clean. We'll work out hours with you to accommodate your needs. In general, things quiet down around 10 PM, but folks who stay here tend to go out on the town or be up late, so there will still be coming and goings until midnight or later. You are welcome to have friends over to hang out in the garden, house, living room, cook meals in the kitchen, etc. If you have requests or needs, please just let us know.

Misc Details

There are four steps up to the property, then a 100' level brick path, then 4 steps up into the house. Main bathroom is on this level. Also, the Cyclotron bedroom is on this level. Up one flight of stairs with two bends are the two larger bedrooms, the "Ginsberg Room," and "Treehouse Studio."

We have gas heat in the house, and additional electric heaters in the rooms. There is also a Jotul woodstove. (These modern, airtight woodstoves are used throughout Scandinavia and New England, and we have one of the same model in our other property in Vermont, where it happily heats a 2000 square foot space with 25' ceilings, even during the cold Vermont winters.) The stove lights in about 15 minutes. We provide dry cord-wood.

There is no off-street parking. You can park on the street in any one spot for 2 hours during 8AM-7PM, outside these hours it is OK. So you have to move by 10 AM, and can return at 5pm. If you need to keep the car longer, you can either move it to another spot, or look for non-permit spots between 1 and 6 blocks away.

We also sell City parking permits for $10 per day, so that you can park on our block all day.

Good dogs welcome! Pet fee is $15 per night.

Zugang für Gäste

Laramie and Wendi's place is in a great location and full of North Berkeley character! The layout is a little unusual, giving the impression of being a clearing in a forest, but it's very pleasant and comfortable. The neighbourhood is lovely and quiet, while still being just a short walk away from Shattuck Avenue and downtown Berkeley. The room that I stayed in was small and cosy - fine for one person staying for a medium-term stay or possibly two people for a shorter period. Like the rest of the house, it was bright and airy, which was very welcome. The only drawback is that it can get a little hot in the late afternoon during warm weather, although this is not a major problem by any means. The rest of the house was well-furnished with everything a guest would need. Finally, a word about the hosts. I didn't get to meet Laramie during my stay, but I did get to know Wendi a little. She was extremely friendly, welcoming, and helpful, and I always enjoyed chatting with her. They seem like a delightful couple and were very good hosts. I would stay here again.

I initially planned to stay for only a few days but I ended up staying the better part of a month. The location is ideal for anyone who wants to be in downtown Berkeley. Safeway, Phil's coffee, Cheeseboard pizza and the rest of Gourmet Ghetto is all a matter of a few blocks of walking. Wendi was respectful of my privacy, but also generous with her time when I wanted to talk. She is a warm, artistically-minded person. The space itself has a sort of homey, lived-in feel and is well maintained. The room has plenty of space and lots of light. On hot days, it does get warm up there and I made lots of use of the fan Wendi provided during my September stay.

My partner and I stayed here while looking for an apartment after moving to Oakland from Brooklyn. The neighborhood is beautiful and super convenient. Laramie and Wendi treated us with the warmth and concern of family members, while providing privacy, freedom and space. The house is gorgeous, warm and cozy with beautiful garden views from the bedroom. I would definitely recommend their home to any of our friends visiting the Berkeley/Oakland area.

Laramie & Wendi are great hosts! Their tree studio is tiny, but cozy with a great design that surrounds you with lots of greens, sunlights and breeze. They are really polite and respectful of privacy.

Laramie and Wendi are welcoming, friendly host! I really enjoyed the staying at the Laramie's room! This room make me feel like in Jungle! You can enjoy the garden through the window next to the bed! Squirrels run over the ceiling. The bed is comfortable and clean! There are many sunlight all day, that give me a great healing in mind. I was in right before the paper deadline, but I take great comfort from the mood. The house is surrounded of huge garden of trees, flowers (I love hydrangea especially). But there were no flys, mosquito at all in the room.

I'll be either in the garden, or in the micro-cottage in the garden, or the living room or the kitchen. On cold evenings I'll build a fire in the living room, and this usually draws folks in for conversation, music, or reading by the fire. As a host for many years, I generally sense which guests like to chat, and which guests would just prefer the space they need to relax.

Über Laramie & Wendi

I'm a musician (singer, composer, guitarist, bassist), cartoonist, and a techie (Java programming, integration, and architecture for educational software and Open Source), and we travel quite a bit. My lovely partner Wendi is a playwright and ESL educator. We've been doing the bi-coastal bed and breakfast for a few years now: we host at our Brownsville, Vermont house, and we host at our Berkeley, CA place. We are very laid back and accommodating, and we love hosting because of the kind, interesting people we meet from all over the world. We also love to travel using Airbnb for out-of-the-box business travel, and for vacations to New York and LA and other hip places. So sometimes we host people in the individual rooms, sometimes we rent our whole houses. Here's looking forward to meeting you!
