Die Unterkunft

The cabin is a fully furnished year round home, rustic but comfortable. Take note of where the furniture is, then move whatever you want to make your stay more comfortable. You can put it back the way it was when it's time to leave.

Don't lose any time before acquainting yourself with the beautiful Greenbrier River. Drop your suitcases on the bed, unpack your groceries and step out onto the big screened porch overlooking the river. There's no better white sound than "live" water and there's no better place for a nap than a rocking chair on our porch. In a matter of moments, you will feel at home.

The cabin has two double beds - one in the bedroom and a second one in a corner of the living room. There is also a twin sized hotel bed that can be unfolded and made up as needed. Linens are provided for all three beds. If you have extra folks coming with you, we provide two single cots that make a comfortable bed (you'll need to bring sleeping bags for those). There's room on the floor for an air mattress (ditto on the linens - we stop at 5). The bathroom has a nice sized shower with plenty of racks for hanging towels. Bath and bed linens are provided. The lower shelf has a hair dryer, steam iron and miniature ironing board that can be used atop the kitchen table.

The kitchen has a stove, microwave and refrigerator. Basic dishes, utensils, pots and pans, serving dishes, cookie sheets and baking pans are ready for use. All of the pottery, china, stoneware and pyrex dishes are oven and microwave safe. The fridge and cabinets have basic condiments and some food stuff. Unless it's marked "Do Not Use" you may help yourself. If you do finish off the last of something basic like butter, coffee, sugar, etc., it would be thoughtful to buy some more to replace it before you leave.

Of course, if you don't want to cook, you can venture out and find some wonderful food. Because of the proximity to the Greenbrier Resort, our part of West Virginia has a great many restaurants with creative chefs who finished their training at the Greenbrier.

The River Cabin notebook on the telephone table has suggestions for nearby activities. Let us know what your interests are and we'll try to point you in the right direction. You don't need to leave our property if you like hunting, hiking or fishing. Birdwatchers are treated to sightings of great blue herons, pileated woodpeckers and occasional bald eagles in the daytime. Eastern phoebes are charming, as well as the bank swallows that hang out near the river. After dark we are used to hearing the night call of several species of owls. We keep binoculars and a bird identification book on the sideboard in the kitchen.

Even though the property affords privacy, it is only 4 miles from a regional hospital. The old railroading town of Hinton is just 7 miles from the cabin. There is a Kroger grocery store, Rite-Aid drug store that includes a liquor store. For almost anything else you might need, MagicMart is the place to go for everything from chain saws to lingerie. Board games, batteries, appliances and Christmas ornaments - if they don't have it, you don't need it.

We keep a toy bin with books, dolls, finger puppets and dinosaurs under one of the living room tables. Board games and playing cards are under the other.

And, of course, there's the river. The Greenbrier is suitable for tubing or kayaking. You can bring your own raft, canoe or kayak, or you can rent one in town. Whether you're headed out for an afternoon of skipping rocks or a few hours of photography, we've cleared two paths for ready access down to the river and back. There are over 200 yards of river frontage. As our guest, you may fish from the banks but if you want to cast a line from a boat or canoe, or if you want to drive down to the public access spots and try your luck in the New River, you'll need a West Virginia fishing license. Angler's shops in Hinton always know what's biting on any given day. They can sell you whatever license you might need. Naturally, they'll also have a selection of tackle they'd like for you to have a look at while you're there...

We enjoy walking in the woods "up the holler." It's an easy to moderate hike along an old logging road that goes almost to the top of the mountain. The hills on either side are steep and present more of a challenge. Walking sticks are stacked in the corner beside the back door in the kitchen. Note: Be sure to bring them back with you!! It's easy to get caught up enjoying the greenery but if you set one of the walking sticks down to take a photograph, be sure to take note of where you laid it so you can bring it back with you.

Zugang für Gäste

There is a combo keybox on the front door so you can let yourself in. We will e-mail the access code to you the day before you are due to arrive.

Interaktion mit Gästen

A phone number will be provided in case you run into a problem or have trouble figuring out what to do. For questions or requests for information about the area, you can text or e-mail any time. For an actual emergency, we can be reached by phone 24-hours a day.

Die Nachbarschaft

This is a vintage log home, tucked in between small creeks and ravines and surrounded by dogwoods, maple, oak and hemlock trees. The property includes 140 acres with hundreds of yards of frontage on the beautiful Greenbrier River. There are good roads all the way to our drive. Camp Lightfoot Road is one lane but there is room for two vehicles to pass each other if both are courteous about pulling over onto the shoulder a bit.

The cabin is our home away from home. When we're expecting guests, we clear out and let you have the place all to yourselves. The notebook on the telephone table has a map of the River Cabin property so you'll know the dimensions of our acreage. Most of the guest comments include some mention of the screened porch, and some folks never leave it long enough to go exploring on the rest of our property. With more than 140 acres, however, you can take some nice walks along on the old logging road that follows the creek. Or you can strike out through the woods and catalog the wildflowers and native plants. There's a guide book in the living room that you can carry with you. We've come across Jack-in-the-pulpit, maidenhair fern, rhododendron, wild ginger, miterwort, scads of ferns, decorative lichens and more. Please note that guests are not permitted to pick, harvest, cut or dig anything on the property. The woods are charming, and we want to leave them just the way they are.

Walking sticks are stacked beside the door that leads out onto the screened porch from the kitchen. Note: Be sure to bring them back with you!! It's easy to get caught up enjoying the greenery but if you lay the walking stick down, remember to bring it back with you.

The Greenbrier is a "natural" river; it has never been dammed, and the banks are home to beavers, river otters and a huge assortment of birds. Regular sightings include bald eagle, great blue heron, pileated woodpecker, Eastern phoebes and many more. We keep binoculars and a couple of bird identification books on hand for your use.

In front of the cabin, the river is 103 yards across and it is an excellent stream for smallmouth bass and other game fish. You may keep what you land or you can catch & release, whichever you prefer. Local fishing outfitters have the best information on what's biting and what kind of tackle to use.

Verkehrsmittel

There is a lean-to carport with room for one car. You can park anywhere there is gravel. No need to close the gate when you're coming and going. Leave it propped open until you're ready to check out, then you can close it behind you.

Weitere wichtige Infos

If you're staying long enough to do laundry, you will have access to the washer & dryer. They are in the basement. Go down the porch steps that are closest to the kitchen door, turn left and then left again to enter the basement. The door is just below the screened porch.

NOTE: We keep the basement locked. Let us know if you think you'll need to do laundry and we will tell you where we store the key.

Hausregeln
Rauchen verboten

The cabin is strictly non-smoking. No cigars, cigarettes, pipes, e-cigarettes or "vapes" are allowed, ever. No open flame is allowed in the cabin, so please don't bring incense or candles. No outdoor campfires or grilling are allowed, either. NOTE: There are hurricane lamps in the kitchen in the event of a power outage. The rules about open flame and smoking are absolutely non-negotiable. Other than that, please relax and enjoy yourself.

We had the best relaxing weekend at the river cabin. It's a small rustic wonderland right on the river. We had no cell service and that was an absolute blessing. Bonnie's communication was excellent and we knew exactly how to get into the property and the collection of info in the welcome booklet was excellent. The extended property holds a beautiful creek which you can follow up the mountain and we really enjoyed the walk. We saw a lot of deer, a few snapping turtles and thankfully no snakes! We can't wait to visit again!

I found Bonnie's place while searching for a destination somewhere central to IL where my parents, two sisters, and I live and NC where my other sister lives. We were meeting up for a family weekend and had a most wonderful stay at the River Cabin! Bonnie had a jar of crisp home made pickles and a welcome card sitting on the table when we arrived. The cabin was warm and well furnished, the beds were comfortable, and every kitchen supply needed for our weekend stay was readily available. Despite the cold November temperatures, we bundled up and sat out on the porch taking in the peaceful sounds of the river and the beautiful colors of the fall leaves as we sipped our coffee. We enjoyed a weekend filled with quality conversations, much laughter, and delicious home cooked meals. There was absolutely no reason to leave the cabin other than to enjoy a nice walk or run to the grocery store. I would definitely recommend Bonnie's place to anyone looking to get away and enjoy a slower paced, distraction free setting with all the comforts of home. I know my family relished every minute together!

From the beginning, Bonnie made me feel like I was not a guest but someone who had a home away from home. While I was familiar with the area she made sure that I had everything I needed to make it to the front door with no problems. What I really liked was the welcome letter providing us instructions on making sure we felt at home, at ease. As someone who owns a vacation rental one of my frustrations is going in to find our things moved around; Bonnie gave me a great idea......she merely asked us to look around and see where things were located then feel free to move things around as we wanted but requested we move everything back. That simple thing made us feel so at home. The beds were very comfortable as was the furniture. The linens were nice rather than feeling like cheap hotel linens. Of course the best thing about the cabin is sitting on the porch and watching the river flow by. It is so relaxing and gives you the feeling of serenity. While there is no TV, Internet or wireless phone service a short trip into Hinton gives you time to check your messages if you feel the need and we downloaded some shows that we could watch at night when it was too cool and dark to sit on the porch. If you can break away from the porch, there are many things to do that are within an hour....Hinton has some wonderful historic buildings and Lewisburg is a great town to visit. The John Henry park and memorial is just over the mountain and definitely worth going to. We had a jar of pickles waiting for us on the kitchen table when we got there. We waited until arriving home to try them and they are wonderful. Bonnie makes these pickles and we found them in a store in Hinton so if one jar isn't enough there are more available. If you want to relax and enjoy nature I highly recommend checking out The River Cabin along the beautiful Greenbrier River......you'll understand why John Denver describes West Virginia as Almost Heaven.

Bonnie kept in touch after the reservation was made until the time we arrived. She let us know what was available and left instructions for us. The screened in porch is large and has a number of chairs to enjoy the river passing by below. There is a large section of land which you are free to explore and we did. The beautiful Sandstone Falls are nearby and you don't want to miss them while you are here!

What a wonderful stay! Bonnie communicated extremely well and welcomed us with homemade pickles and a beautiful card. So quiet and peaceful, just what we needed. Was sad to leave but we are planning to return next year! Surroundings are serene, sat on the porch watching the eagles soar up and down the river. Day trips were filled with amazing views, great fishing and awesome people. Thanks Bonnie for a marvelous time...just what the soul needed!

I am a lover of Nature, a couch-potato bird watcher, a fiber artist, professional pickle maker (yes, there are such people). I grew up in the Appalachian foothills and have an abiding love of the mountains in this part of the country. Pleasures include cooking contests, museum tours, garden shops and reading just about anything. Reading on a porch is even better.
