My husband and I stayed in Sophie's gite with our 2 sons (20 and 18 years old) for one week. The gite is as shown in the photos - what doesn't come across in the photos is the spacious feel in the living room - the ceiling is the height of the house. We ate outside on the secluded terrace looking over the vineyard. The local baker sells baguette without preservatives but all the other patisserie/ croissants contain additives and are not produced on site. It is only 5 minutes walk to the bakery from the gite. Sophie kindly organized a visit for us to her family's vineyard La Gaffeliere - this produces fabulous wine and the young tourguide was very amusing. I thoroughly recommend staying at Sophie's gite.
This place was everything we had hoped for, absolutely delightful. It’s a charming little detached building, with classic French period touches, but modern in its facilities. Sophie is the perfect hostess, and it’s in the perfect location – just out of the town, so it’s quiet, but only a 6 or 7 minute walk to the lower square. The walk on a path beside a quiet road is fully lit, so a late evening return is not a challenge. The house is in the grounds of big house (where Sophie lives), with vineyards in front and trees behind, separated from the road by a big gate, so your car will be secure. Sitting on the terrace is very private, with views out over vines. The sitting/dining room is big and nicely furnished in a traditional style. The double bedroom on the first floor is completely en-suite, while the one on the ground floor has its bath/shower, basin and bidet en-suite, while the WC is separate but adjacent to the bedroom. The kitchen is well equipped, and everything worked perfectly. Sophie is very thoughtful, and she had provided all the essentials, from tea, milk, ground coffee and filter papers to detergent for the washing machine, Even a very nice bottle of rosé in the fridge! She also arranged for us to join a small private group tour and wine-tasting in the adjacent Chateau Gaffeliere, one of St. Emilion’s top Grand Cru Classé vineyards, and went to some trouble to book a restaurant table for us on a Saturday night at short notice. She recommended the Terrace Rouge, which is a few kilometres away in the next village, but there are plenty of very good restaurants within an easy walk in St. Emilion itself. We ate in four different ones, and all were very good. A full range of traditional and modern French cuisine, but there is also an excellent pizzeria. All have a good range of wines by the glass, so you don’t have to commit to an expensive bottle to get the true St. Emilion experience! In summary, both Sophie’s little house and St. Emilion itself exceeded expectations by some margin, totally enjoyable. Thank you Sophie!
Sophie's place is a lovely tranquil spot backing on a vineyard, perfect for families with a gated large yard to run in. Location is 10 mins walk from town, fine even with children, and in fact preferred as the distance keeps you out of the tourist traffic. Everything was as advertised if not better, we loved it. The fridge was graciously stocked with basics. Only downside were voracious mosquitoes in the night, though nothing Sophie could do about that...we loved it and will return.
This is a charming stone house situated on a patio next to the magnificent 300 year old La Gaffereire Chateau, Our host Sophie, was most gracious; supplying us with food for breakfast the next day, recommending restaurants and arranging a wine tour in the Chateau. There is a lovely patio with tables, chairs and umbrella where we ate several meals. The home is very well appointed, very clean and comfortable. The beds were also very comfortable. It is a very short walk into the charming town of Saint Emillion, where parking is at a premium. This is a great place to stay and I'd love to return someday.
This is a fantastic place to stay and the location couldn't be better! The house is surrounded by vineyards and is an easy (and beautiful) walk to Saint-Emilion. Sophie was kind enough to schedule a tasting across the street at Château La Gaffelière where they have delicious wine and the most amazing looking wine tanks I've ever seen at a winery! The house is charming with thoughtful details throughout. This is a great place for a family to stay.
