I had a wonderful 3 month stay with Ted. I use a mobility scooter, and while it was not possible to get the scooter inside of the apartment, Ted allowed me to keep it in his open-air “garage”. This was an area enclosed by a high privacy fence and accessed by a garage door, which he will give you the security code to operate. The space IS open-air, so you will need a cover for your scooter, but otherwise, it was a great space to store and charge the scooter. If you are using a wheelchair, which is more maneuverable than a scooter, you should be able to get it inside, but it would be a little tight.
Ted's apartment was located very nicely in the city. It is 4 blocks to the H Street Streetcar (currently FREE, but may have a fee after an initial trial period). The Streetcar takes you 13 blocks to Union Station. From Union Station you can either walk 2 blocks to the Capitol (and the start of the capitol mall) or take a Metro to any Red line station, or to the Metro Center to catch other lines. ALL of the Metro Stops are easily wheelchair/scooter accessible, as is the H Street Streetcar.
There are buses around the city as well, but they are more difficult to access with a scooter. The area designated for the handicapped is very difficult to maneuver into with a scooter (easier with a wheelchair), as a result, I did not usually take the buses.
The apartment was very comfortable. It is very bright and sunny, which IS unusual for ground floor apartments in DC! The bedrooms are small, but that is typical for city apartments... both have large closets with great closet organizing features! The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, pans, utensils, and spices. Previous tenants have left coffee, tea and sweeteners. Grocery shopping is easy with both a Whole Foods and Giant Food stores on stops off of the H Street Streetcar.
Street parking was fairly easy to find and free with a guest parking permit that Ted will obtain for you.
Ted was a great host. Very helpful and responsive to all my needs. I would happily rent from him again!
