Come stay with us in our charming 1950s pre-fab cottage in the heart of Columbus's quirky, peaceful Clintonville neighborhood. Just a short walk or ride away from High Street -- the city's central cultural artery -- and with *all* that vintage cozy! And, a few Pokestops are right down the street :)
Our darling little cape cottage is a part of one of Columbus' original mid-century housing developments -- right smack-dab in the middle of Clintonville. Our house features three bedrooms, a centrally-located bathroom, spacious study, 1950s-style living room and loft bedroom upstairs. Your room is a clean, crisp bedroom that overlooks the backyard, with great morning sun and a mid-century-modern-meets-farm-country-chiq decor -- we're early to bed and early to rise, so your space will be quiet and cozy to meet your schedule. Wool blankets, a water carafe, a vintage dresser, a nightlight and lamp, and classic American lit are all provided to you for your use during your visit; just ask if you need anything else!
NOTE: As of Summer 2016, The Cozy Room has now been upgraded to a super-comfy full-sized bed; and can comfortably sleep two people (who like each other)! Still includes green dresser as pictures, towels, linens & blankets; and a deluxe vintage banker's lamp for that cozy green glow.
Zugang für Gäste
A stay with us, of course, includes
your beautiful room, and the cozy bathroom is right next door! You'll pass through the kitchen and living room to get to your space, but we maintain these and the rest of our house for our private use. Please respect that. There's WiFi in your room.
Please be mindful that guests will not have access to the kitchen. We allow light meal prep -- breads/cereals/dry goods (yours) and tea (we provide); and refrigeration is sometimes (but not always) available; please contact us in advance if you anticipate needing kitchen use and we can discuss (see House Rules for more details.) We hope you love our space as much as we do!
Interaktion mit Gästen
We're both extremely friendly and gregarious about all our lovely little city -- one of us was born & raised here, and the other's quickly become an adopted son. We'd be happy to tell you all about our favorite shops, restaurants, co-ops, farmers' markets and breweries -- can you tell we're big fans of the local food scene here? We'd love to interact as much as we're able -- we're graduate students and are often juggling quite a few projects at once with deadlines that follow us home from work, but we're usually down to go for a walk, exploring, or to grab some great food nearby!
Weitere wichtige Infos
We have a lovely and very friendly pup named Isaly -- she's a border collie mix, and will probably not only request, but demand that you pet her and give her some belly rubs! We haven't heard any allergy complaints yet; but if you're seriously allergic to dogs, you may want to weigh that in your request. She'll stay in the main spaces of the house and sleep in our bedroom -- unless you let her into your room, in which case I'm sure she'd be happy to snuggle pro bono! She can be a bit shy around some folks, and has some funny fears (large flat circular shapes like manhole covers, etc.), so we'll want to introduce you all first. You'll fall in love, we swear -- we just ask, since we live not too far off the street, to ask us if you'd like to take her out to play in the backyard! We also have a very sweet matching cat, Nell, who's around some of the time; she's a pretty chill cat but might sit on your head if you want her to :)
We're super-close to main bus-lines in the neighborhood; but we also have our bikes available for potential use if you'd like to borrow them during your stay! *NOTE: Depends on our schedules and availability*
In particular, we also ask guests to:
-- Not eat/consumer/bring meat into the house. We are all *all-vegetarian* house. What you do outside our home is up to you!
-- Not use fragranced or perfumed products or chemicals while staying with us. Your host has multiple chemical sensitivity and takes this quite seriously! We provide all-natural shampoo and soap for your use! This means please do not use perfume, hairspray, or artificially-fragranced shampoo, soap or body products while in our home. Ditto for bleach, nail polish, or any other chemicals. We *will* notice.
-- Please take shoes off in living room
-- Please *take care of your room*: use coasters on all furniture (it's vintage); and treat the bed and linens with respect. We ask guests not to eat in bed; and please to be mindful not to wipe makeup on towels.
We also ask guests to be mindful of the following:
* We have a really lovely border collie, named Isaly! You will adore her; and she will not go into your room if you shut the door. But, because she will go in if you leave the door open, we ask you please store all dry food products in a designated space in the kitchen.
* We don't provide full kitchen access. No cooking, sorry. You will have access to filtered water, tea, space to prep a packed lunch or cereal if you need it, and a table where you can eat take-out meals. Sometimes we can allow refrigeration. Please ask first. Microwave use only if you arrange in advance; most of our dishes can't go in the microwave.
* Our kitchen and living room are our personal spaces. They aren't cleaned specifically for guest use; they're working zones. At times, we're not able to do dishes immediately, or have clutter in the living room. That's because we live and work there, y'all. Please understand that your booking is your room and bathroom, not our personal spaces. If you expect to book an entire house, book a whole house, sorry!
* Our bathroom is shared; but we happily coordinate schedules to make sure everyone has access!
Welcome to our cozy 1950's Clintonville home!
To make sure you have a great stay, we just want to list out some basic expectations
we have for guests in our home, and some particulars of staying with us!
-- Be respectful! Treat your hosts and any other guests with kindness and respect.
-- Please don't shout or yell. Quiet hours after 10pm.
-- Absolutely no drugs, smoking, sexual harassment, racist/sexism/homophobia/transphobia/xenophobia
will be tolerated. We welcome all and need this to be a safe environment, and we expect guests to maintain that from wet glasses are left on furniture, or if towels or bedding is stained or destroyed. We also reserve the right to ask guests to leave if they spray perfume or hairspray in house or are not willing to use scent-free shampoo. We deserve the right to not have migraines, and need to keep the house fragrance-free for other guests, too! We do use essential oils in cleaning and in the shower.
We are so looking forward to having you!
hi there! i'm jess -- a folklorist, oral historian and columbus, ohio native with a really amazing border collie pup, named isaly.
my partner jeff & i are both currently grad students -- he studies the history of industrialization and labor in the u.s. south through a history of science & technology phd. program based in philly, and i'm a folklorist and oral historian who works on the history of sustainable agriculture, food & environmental justice, & everyday perceptions of environmental toxicity. that means i get to road-trip around this fine state alot, asking people questions about how they connect food and environment health, and how they've had their lives shaped around those questions.
as a folklorist and oral historian, i believe in the power of everyday people's embodied and lived knowledge and experience; and my work is in documenting, interpreting and helping to present these powerful perspectives to wider audiences, to create conversations for change. i try to bring these passions to everything in my life.
i'm interested in the ways people connect food, health and environmental concern; and movement histories and futures of activism around the stuff that makes us sick, and the stuff that makes us healthy. basically, if you wanna talk farm magazines from the 1950s or the poisons & boons of various audio recorders or just like food in general, i'm yr grrl!
because of my own history of exposure and chemical sensitivity, we try to keep (as much as possible) a non-toxic home, free of meats, chemical cleaners, and scents. and, if you come in summer or fall, you're free to help harvest goodies from our bountiful yard garden! (the "yarden.") it can get a bit weedy this time of year; but it's all chem-free and very well loved.
columbus, ohio is my hometown (and my favorite city on earth), and we're so blessed to get to do cultural work in and around the good and environmental systems in this lovely place. we absolutely love showing people this city -- from cultural tours to the best nature spots to restaurants (even pokémon)!
our wonderful brilliant border collie isaly will be your prime host -- she loves our guests and will happily throw you some tricks (her newest one is "step up and kisses") and some cuddles. we also have a lovely matching kitty named nella.
we love meeting people from all around the world, and sharing our love for our little city and its wonderful culture. we can't wait to meet you!
