I went to the Maracas Hideaway with my boyfreind for almost two weeks from one week before carnival to some days after and we can totally recommend it!! The house is located in a very nice area with a walking distance to the beach through the little village of Maracas Bay. The area is, compared to areas like the City Port of Spain, save and we had a great time there. Some of the people of the village might seem a bit strange at the first sight, but all the people we met there were very friendly and talkative. We made some friends in the village and really hope to come back some day to meet them again! The beach at Maracas Bay is very nice and has a lot of visitors from all over. In the village are some little shops and a small bar where you can always meet people. The appartement is clean and big. There are two bathrooms, a big kitchen, a living/dining room and a nice terrace and balcony to sit and enjoy the sun and the palmtrees in the garden. Leela is a very caring person (probably one of the most caring persons i ever met :) ) and a great cook! Even though she just came to visit to the Maracas Hideaway and wasn't staying there, we always knew that we could call her for any questions at any time since we were in a country we didn't know before. We were there for carnival. It's approximately one hour drive from Maracas Bay to downtown Port of Spain, which was a bit complicated sometimes, but Leela helped us to find someone who could take us there or pick us up, even in the night. During the day there are also buses and maxi-taxis going. We really enjoyed the whole stay an miss Leela and her family - really hope to see you again some time!!

My fiance and I stayed at Maracas Hideaway for four nights over Carnival and it was wonderful! Leela and her husband Mr. Simmons take great pride in making sure their visitors to Maracas Hideaway get the full Trinidad experience. From their extreme hospitality, to teaching us about the local community and customs, to helping us get in and out of Port of Spain for fetes and watching the bands, they could not have been better hosts. Leela cooked a feast for dinner one night using her garden almost exclusively - and it was delicious! She even made cake and homemade ice cream from fruit from the garden for dessert. The Hideaway is about an hour by car to Piarco airport and they will arrange to pick up and drop you there for a reasonable fee - even when we needed to leave the house at 3am to make out flight! The beach at Maracas Bay is a short walk through the village and you can be on the sand in about 10min. Make sure you check out the food stands there too! We had a private room and bathroom with AC and towels and even a private terrace where we enjoyed spending time after a long day/night partying in town. Leela and Mr. Simmons are genuinely nice people and enjoy sharing their home and love of their country with visitors. Hopefully we will get to see them in Maracas again!

We are a young couple (24 & 23y old) and came to Maracas Hideaway looking for a bit of peace and quiet after a first year of hectic work at our new jobs. We stayed for a week in Trinidad. We found Leela a really nice hostess: very friendly, helpful and caring. She was especially concerned with our safety, assuring us that the villagers in Maracas are, though rough, nice people and harmless. Experience taught us that she was completely right. Simmons, Leela’s hushand, is a nice guy that can tell you a lot about the local sights and can easily bring you up to speed about the on goings on the island, which he will do. He’s a good driver and can teach you a lot about local customs, such as the steel pans and how to deal with coconuts. Agreed on a 75USD fee, Simmons picked us up at the airport and brought us to their home for a welcome meal which was delicious! On the way we made a stop at the supermarket to buy our groceries for the week (since there are only small shops at Maracas Bay). We had expressed in our earlier contact that we liked nature and hiking, so on arrival they had already looked up various activities which we could embark on, including visiting the Bird Sanctuary in the swamps and the ‘Brutal’ hike which climbs the second highest peak on Trinidad. We slept in the bedroom with the double bunkbed. There were clean sheets and towels. We had some mosquitoes but with the insect spray and manual hunting they were quickly gone. Mosquito nets on windows prevented new ones from coming in. Airco was fully functional in the entire house but we only used the one in the bedroom. Kitchen was fully equipped. Internet wasn’t working although it should have, but we weren’t bothered since we wanted to get away from all that high tech stuff for a while. We had access to a washer and dryer and if we wished could eat our meals outside. The walk from the house to the beach is indeed as advertised 10min, give or take a minute due to the heat. The beach is beautiful and the water was warm and clear. Fish all around. Loads of people during the weekend but during the week it was very quiet. Enough room for sunbathing but if you feel like shade there’s plenty of palm trees and even locations where you can rent parasols and recliners. You’ll probably meet guitar guy while on the beach. Somewhat hard to get rid of, but he does play a beautiful ‘Lady in Red’ or ‘Wonderwall’ for 5TT$ (+-1USD). Oh yes, did we mention the beach is GORGEOUS? All in all we had a great time for what we thought a very reasonable price and would recommend this little jewel to everyone so inclined to hear about it. Leela and Simmons, you were great! Leela was a great host! She made sure we had everything we needed and that we got all the local experiences. She weren't home when we stayed at her place but she was always just one call away and left us with the numbers to the very kind neighbors wich we were introduced to when we got there. Everyone we met in the village and neighborhood were very friendly and several times got invited to dinner and liming. The last day Leela and also her husband Simmons came over with homemade food and showed us around in the wonderful garden with all types of fresh fruits and plants. We had a lovely time at Maracas Hideaway and will be taking with us a lot of great memories and new experiences. Thank you!

Imagine your out travelling and you are told to visit a long lost aunt that toy have never met, if your in Trinidad. That long lost aunt is Leela and her family, Simmons and son Christpher. The way in which the family made my stay so relaxed was delightful. Some of the reviews have expressed concerns about having to walk through the village to the beach, don't be at all concerned. The 10 min walk may take a little longer as you will undoubtedly be caught talking to the very friendly locals, one of which is Donna. Show respect and be friendly and that will be reflected many times over, and if you can talk about cricket even better. Ensure you stop at Maraval shops and stock up supplies on your way as there are no options in the bay. Overall a wonderful time.

Great visit. We really enjoyed ourselves. Located near the beach, this is a splendid example of an authentic island village. A good variety of local food and peaceful. We were fortunate to have Leela and family visiting for the weekend and they made us feel at home. We got a tour of the local vegetation and an overview of local life. We had come for carnival and weren't disappointed, the costumes were spectacular. This is a good alternative to staying in Port-of-Spain as the beach is not over-developed. Thanks for a great stay, Leela.
