We love our cozy nest at the back of an old home in the historic district, just 2 blocks from downtown. Decorated in our favorite style (uncluttered cottage charm) with heirloom furniture and lots of sunlight, it's perfect for 2 but can sleep 4 thanks to a queen size sofa bed in the living room. The bathroom is accessed through the upstairs bedroom, so for parties of 4, it's best if you are pretty comfortable with each other. We use minimally scented, eco-friendly cleaning products.
The house was built in the early 1860s, and we think the back annex may have been added a bit later for a maid or mother-in-law. The layout of the Roost is a one-up, one-down configuration, with the living room and kitchen on the main floor, and the bedroom and bathroom on top.
Zugang für Gäste
With this full apartment rental, you'll have a private entrance through a 3-season porch, a storage shed off the porch for bikes, etc, an outdoor deck off the upstairs bedroom, plus a patio table and four chairs for summer backyard dining under the apple tree.

We live right next door and will be happy to greet you when you arrive if you prefer, but most often we'll just leave the door unlocked and the key on the counter so you can check in on your own schedule. You'll find information inside about Decorah but feel free to ask us anything!
The Roost is located in Decorah's historic district. Just steps away is the Porter House Museum and a series of signs guiding you on a historic walking trail. Walk up the hill a few blocks to Phelps Park for a scenic overlook of the Upper Iowa River and surrounding bluffs. Walk downhill two blocks to the Vesterheim Museum, and beautiful downtown Decorah. Bring your bike and pedal just three blocks to hit the 11 mile Trout Run Trail loop, which takes you past the famous Decorah eagles' nest and the local trout hatchery.
Our favorite local spots for eating & drinking are all walking distance...
*La Rana Bistro for a fresh locally-sourced gourmet lunch or dinn, corner of Washington and Main)
*Oneota Community Co-op for a great lunch from the hot bar, salad bar, housemade soups, wine and beer to go (, corner of River and Water St)
*Rubaiyat for happy hour and a good bar menu (563.382.WINE, 117 W. Water St.)
*Pulpit Rock Brewery or Toppling Goliath Brewery for fantastic local ales
*The Courtyard & Cellar for the best bar pizza you'll have, live music
*check out or for local event listings!
One of the things we love about living in Decorah is going days without getting in a car. The Roost is within easy walking distance of downtown shops, restaurants, museums, breweries, parks, the Upper Iowa River, and the Trout Run Trail. You'll find maps and brochures inside the Roost.

I'm originally from the SF Bay Area and am now happily rooted in this beautiful corner of northeast Iowa. My husband Mark works for admissions at Luther College, Simon is in college at Lewis & Clark in Portland, OR, and I'm a freelance theatre person. We love our local organic food scene, cooking, and eating. We love old houses, vintage and repurposed stuff, and creating cozy spaces. Ask Mark (a 5th generation local) about Decorah and he'll delight in telling you the best place to get a cocktail, take a hike, or look for antiques. I like that too, but am more likely to strike up a conversation about Shakespeare, kids and the arts, or what's playing in regional theatres these days.
