This is a somewhat lengthy review to suggest that you will do well to spend some time at Nati's place in Bahir Dar. To explain, let me first say that you will want to spend time in Bahir Dar while in Ethiopia, and that to make the best of it, will mean to make use of local knowledge. There is a lot to do and see in and outside of Bahir Dar, and my guess is that most visitors do not stay long enough to take everything in. If in addition, you have to figure out details of some of the things you'd definitely like to see (e.g. visit to where the blue nile water falls, visit the monastries on lake tana, travel to the denakil, or even to gondar...), you're again back to local knowledge if you want to make your money and time work. Of course, local knowledge is plentiful in Bahir Dar, one is offered "deals" wherever one is identified as a non-local/tourist, one can flexibly plan on the ground so or so, but then, however you're planning, you'll probably come into contact with Nati or someone who knows Nati. So, cut out the middle man, and stay at the backpacker's compound for a while. AT NATI'S PLACE: 1. You will be comfortable, surrounded by good people, among vetted fellow-travelers from all around the world, minutes foot-walk from lake tana, closer even to nice restaurants, fancier hotel-compounds, the local bus-station, etc. ... there will be coffee and a smile. 2. You will have honest help in organizing trips and commutes, opportunity to get your clothes washed, very decent value for money in terms of the room you're renting, reason to come back. 3. You will potentially find out about things you'd like to do and see in Bahir Dar, which were not before on your radar. AMENITIES: If you're in Ethiopia, your internet is government dependent. It is not unusual -- and a function of where you're staying -- that you'll have some trouble with the net. (This makes travel planning on the go, ever more dependent on local knowledge). There are rooms with private toilets and warm showers. You won't consider these spa relaxation areas, but it is what it is. There are additional shower rooms, slightly more spacious, also with warm water and also more of the in-and-out type. Anything you need, it seemed possible to arrange it through the guest house, Nati, and the familial staff that make it all work.
I have been blessed to stay at Nati's guest house and have enjoyed it to the highest. The place is nice, cosy and very suitable for backpackers, travelers and regular tourists. Besides, the whole team of Manuhie Pension is taking care of our needs and tries to find solutions to every challenge they face. Finally, I have to give big respects and shouts to Nati because besides the seriousness he shows, he's also a great friend: great fun, human contact and adventurous moments. Sad to leave but so happy to have been there.
Nati was an excellent host. He arranged transportation from the airport when I arrived and helped me arrange my departure from the bus station. Nati is well connected and was able to arrange guided tours of Lake Tana and the Blue Nile waterfalls. The room was as expected and the lodge was well kept. It has a nice courtyard to mingle with other guests or his local friends. Overall. Nati is a superb host.
