Featured in the New York Times "Escapes" column, Casa Paloma, the retreat of a well-known American Writer, is the quintessential Lago Atitlan Villa. It sits at the water’s edge in its own small cove—easy walking distance from the village of San Marcos but still very private. This beautifully decorated, fully-equipped property (pizza oven, sauna, kayak, etc.), set in exotic gardens, is a perfect escape for a romantic getaway or a family or group of friends looking for a fun yet relaxing vacation.
You will find breathtaking lake and volcano views from every room, and the comfort to enjoy them. The house has two main bedrooms (one with a fireplace), each decorated with traditional art, furnishings and textiles, and top-quality queen-sized mattresses. Each bedroom has its own private bathroom (one with oversized tub). Kids love the cozy loft space, with an additional double bed (and a tree coming through the middle!). For larger groups, the living room can be turned into a bedroom, with fold-out futon couch, and there is a guest cabin with a Robinson Crusoe feel to it a short distance from the main house, with its own bathroom and shower and more fantastic views of the lake, of course.
The spacious and well-stocked kitchen will invite you to prepare meals to share on the large patio overlooking the water and San Pedro Volcano (we can also provide you with the services of a private chef, if you'd prefer not to cook). The house also features a balcony and a second patio off the upstairs bedroom, with outdoor fireplace, outdoor shower, a hammock roomy enough for two, and a sitting area to take in the stars.
The house is filled with all the things we would want on a vacation: comfortable beds and pillows, a soaking tub and a massage table (we can arrange for a massage therapist to come to the house for a private Thai, Shiatzu or Swedish massage), a spacious kitchen stocked with spices, appliances and quality pots and pans, a library of good books and games, even a hand drum and guitar...
And outside, a paradise awaits. Stone paths meander through one-and-a-half acres of private, lush gardens. Walk under vine covered arches, pick your own fruit, smell the orchids, sit beside the trickling waterfalls…find your peace….or your fun! Fire up the pizza oven (ask us to leave you a fresh "pizza pack" in the refrigerator with all you need to make your own pizzas) or the wood-fired Temescal sauna (seats 4-5); play baci ball on the lawn; exploit the refreshing waters of the lake with our stand-up paddle board or kayak, or just have a good old-fashioned swim.
This is truly a remarkable house, in an even more remarkable setting--one of virtually unparalleled natural beauty, rich in indigenous Mayan culture. Come indulge yourself!

Because we understand that travelling to Guatemala requires a little more insider-know-how than some other destinations, we are happy to assist you in all stages of your trip.
At your request (and we strongly suggest this), we will arrange for your private transportation to the lake from the airport, Antigua or Guatemala City. We will typically meet you on arrival and orient you about the property and San Marcos, as well as things to do, see and eat around the lake. We are happy to provide a list of activities around the lake. And we will always be reachable by phone (a local phone will be made available for your stay) or email to answer any questions or resolve any issues that arise.
Two trusted gardeners, Mateo and Miguel, will be on site daily—respectful of your privacy, but also ready to help whenever needed. They’ll make sure you always have fresh drinking water, and will prepare the pizza oven and sauna for you.

Highland Guatemala is known as a land of eternal spring. The weather is always good, with daytime highs in the low 80's and nighttime lows in the upper 50's, and only two seasons, dry and wet, each having its own beauty. Rainy season runs from May to October, reaching its peak in September/October, but you may also encounter some heavy rain in June. July and August often have little rain. Typically, mornings are sunny and the rain comes in the afternoon/evening. There is virtually no rain from November through April.
Smoking is not allowed inside the house.
