“www.ussalabama.com (1¼ hr/51 miles) Mobile, AL Decommissioned in 1947, the ALABAMA was scheduled to be scrapped in the early 1960s. A forward-looking group of Alabamians saw a bright future in the aging warship as the anchor attraction of a Memorial Park to be located in Mobile. That dream came true on January 9, 1965 when USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park opened to the public. Today, Battleship Memorial Park welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world each year. These guests come to tour the Park and learn about the men who served aboard the USS ALABAMA and USS DRUM, (on April 14, 1969, USS Drum joined the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park) our nation’s military history, and the price paid for freedom. ”

Park
“Eden Gardens State Park contains approximately 163 acres of land that was part of the historic Wesley homestead. The focal point of this park is the beautifully renovated, two-story house with elegant white columns and wrap around porch. In a setting of moss-draped live oaks, the 1897 mansion recalls a prosperous era before the virgin forests of longleaf pine and cypress were exhausted in this part of the state. In 1963, Lois Maxon bought and renovated the home, creating a showplace for her family heirlooms and antiques. Visitors can come and enjoy a guided tour of the Wesley House, meander through the gardens, bring a picnic or go fishing off the dock in Tucker Bayou.”

Park
“Great place for a hike. There's so much history here as you wind your way up and down the mountain. You will pass old mines and see the remains of the buildings when this was an active mining location and the company had an entire "village" in place on the mountain.”

Museum
“Our local museum has something for art lovers and historians alike! The permanent history collection will take you through the history of the area. Temporary art exhibits and installations from local artists lead to a different experience each time you visit. The best part in my opinion, is the amazing kids play area. Perfect for young toddlers and up! ”

State / Provincial Park
“Very cute place to visit. Start with a historical walk then ease into a short hike/walk around the wooded/sandy trails. End up at the beach. Careful with the wild habitat. Be sure to read the signs.”
