Buddhist Temple
“Build in 1850, is perhaps the only temple of its kind in the world. The temple is filled with the smoke of burning incense and a variety of pit vipers. The vipers are believed to be rendered harmless by the sacred smoke, but as a safety precaution, the snakes have also been de-venomed but still have their fangs intact. Only can visit on day time. Yes, you shall make a visit to Temple!”

“The Penang Snake Temple is about three km from the airport in Sungai Kluang, Bayan Lepas. Built in honour of Chor Soo Kong, a Buddhist priest and healer, legend has it that the monk gave shelter to the snakes and when the temple was completed after his death, they moved in on their own. After that, the snakes were believed to the disciples of the priest, so it became the home to several resident venomous Wagler’s pit vipers and green tree snakes. The temple is also known as the Temple of the Azure Cloud or Pure Cloud Temple and was constructed in 1850 as a result of a generous donation from a Scotsman, David Brown, whom Chor Soo Kong is said to have healed of an incurable disease using local medicine. ”

“Built in 1930 by the British as a fortress against Japanese attacks, it was overtaken by Jap forces during WWII when they surprised the Brits with inland invasion rather than the sea. While historical hand-me-down accounts vary, it is believed that the Japanese garrison is a butcher house for civilians & prisoners-of-war. The location of Penang War Museum is enough to set goose pimples running amok. It sits on Bukit Hantu, which means ‘Ghost Hill’ because local folklore is apparently rife with ghostly sightings & encounters in the vicinity. It could also be the result of active imagination due to the fort’s dark past as a purported Jap torture camp during WWII that the hill got its name!”
