We have restored and repurposed an authentic barn silo, making it a one-of-a-kind stay you'd have a hard time finding anywhere else in the world!
Featured on international travel show, "Tour Guide", our barn silo is restored into a two story, rustic bed and bath making it a unique stay few can say they've experienced!
There is so much to see and do near Silo on the Ridge! We are located just outside of beautiful Decorah, Iowa where you can float the Upper Iowa River, bring your bike and ride the new 11 mile trail, sit and watch the our world famous Eagles Nest, take a shooting lesson from a world class local gunsmith, or visit our award winning local breweries. The Silo is surrounded by some of the best fishing and hunting in the country and there is lots to see and do in the nearby small towns and countryside. Just short drive away is our family restaurant, Dotzy's. Tell them you're staying with us and get a killer made to order Cookie in a Skillet on the house!

Welcome to Luna Valley Farm, an organic farm nestled deep in a driftless valley, 10 minutes north of Decorah. On our working farm we grow organic crops, rotationally graze sheep and cattle on pasture and invite the community out for wood fired pizza on Friday evenings. This is our second year hosting glampers on our farm and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you here! (It is a working farm, but we promise we'll let you relax!)
Pitched on an oak savanna valley side, our platform tents are furnished with rough sawn hardwood floors, a king bed with luxurious linens and places for you to sit and read or write or simply relax. Each tent includes a private patio where you can listen to the birds sing and watch the sheep graze over your morning cup of locally roasted coffee or afternoon glass of locally brewed beer. Our tents are 12x14 and are furnished with a king sized bed, night stands, dresser and bedside lamps. Both ends of the tent can be tied open to allow beautiful summer breezes to pass through. On the back side of the tent you have a 12x13’ private patio with two adirondack chairs and a table where you can watch the birds or read a good book. Tents come equipped with two LED lanterns, fans, cell phone chargers and a large battery pack, which powers the bedside lamps and can be used to charge a laptop or ipad. Cell phone service is spotty down here in our valley, allowing you to truly feel like you’re away. If you need to connect, a wifi network is available to guests for use down by the barn where the bathrooms are located. We provide all bedding including sheets, blankets, bedspreads and a down comforter (in case it’s a chilly evening) and also provide a variety of pillows so you can find one that suits your sleeping preferences. Down the hill from the glamping tents you’ll find a fire pit and a tote containing everything you need to start a fire. Please let us know if you need more wood. To prevent the spread of tree diseases, we ask that you do not carry in your own firewood. The bathhouse is located a 3-4 minute walk from the tents, in our barn and is shared with pizza guests on Friday nights. We provide towels and eco-friendly shampoo, conditioner and soap and a spot for you to store your toiletries so you don’t have to carry them back and forth. There are two bathrooms, one of which contains a big beautiful tiled shower (you’ll love it). If you look close enough you’ll even notice some of the original barn beams that have been incorporated into the design. The canvas wall tents come with a deep history. For years our local Girl Scout Camp (Camp Tahigwa) hosted groups of girls for week-long camps in the summer, some of which were in wall tents in the woods, overlooking the local trout stream. When the camp got sold a few years ago, we purchased a few of the tents with the dream of someday pitching them on our farm to welcome guests for a farm stay! We have a passion for breathing new life into remnants of the past and doing what we can to repurpose things of deep history and profound beauty. A local Amish tarp repair shop helped us fix up the tents and they have found a new life on our farm, where we hope they will be enjoyed for many years to come. When we bought our farm six years ago we fell in love with the burr oak trees on all the valley sides. They had become severely overgrown and one of our goals is to restore them to the oak savanna that they once were. The first place we’ve cleared is the glamping site! It is one of our favorite parts of the farm and we’re excited to share it with you. From the tent you have views of oak trees, pastures, birds and our (hopefully not too weedy) garden. If you walk around our farm you’ll get to see the Canoe Creek, solar panels that power our farm, sheep and cattle grazing, beehives busy at work and the beginnings of a pond project that will help mitigate flooding. Whether you’re here to visit the breweries, trout fish, mountain bike, visit kids at Luther or just get away from it all for awhile, we know you’re going to love Decorah and we’re happy to share information about our favorite local places so you can make the most of your stay.
If this is your first time in the Decorah area, chances are that it will not be your last. It might sound crazy, but Decorah is undoubtedly the hippest small town in the Midwest and has been coined as the “mountain town without mountains” by Midwest Living. We love our little corner of the universe and want to do everything we can to ensure that you do too. In our community we have an abundance of small farmers, homesteaders, small businesses, breweries, parks and trails and a thriving local food cooperative. Locals care deeply about this place and work creatively to help it become even more vibrant and strong at a time when so many small midwestern towns are on the decline. We hope you’ll take time to walk through our downtown and check out some of our beautiful parks while you’re here. Our farm is located just 8 miles north of Decorah and only a few miles from the Minnesota border (as the crow flies). We live in Pleasant Township, which is a unique place in and of itself with a lot of interesting characters tucked into the hills. If you look closely you’ll find market gardeners, heirloom seed enthusiasts, artists, a grass milk dairy (it belongs to Tom’s parents) and a network of people always willing to lend a hand when a hand is needed. We are lucky to live in such a special place.

Prost! Und glücklich reist jeder!

    Farfum2018-07-10T00:00:00Z

You are welcome to stay in our owner-built timber frame solar powered home with us. Sophie's room is upstairs, along with a sitting room. We'll share the main floor with you, which includes the bathroom, kitchen, and living room.
We were early adopters of solar energy, having been off the grid since 1989. Daniel is pretty darned knowledgeable about many things having to do with alternative energy, sawdust toilets, gardening, building, wood splitting, rainwater collection, and more. Our home is a warm place of wood (mostly local) and old things made well in the distant past. We live by the maxim "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" and this makes space for much beauty.
We live in a beautiful rural neighborhood just 6 miles North of Decorah, where there is much to see and do. Sustainable agriculture and grassroots education are happening here in a big way, and if you are interested in learning things about some of the systems we have in place at Fern Hollow we'd be glad to show you.

Come sleep in storied logs, remember your birthright as one for whom the simple was perfectly enough. Call it your sanctuary, playground, arts space, or hermitage. It's all of these, and whatever else you’d like it to be!
Welcome to Fern Hollow Cabin, a rustic, a historic log cabin in the lush woods of Northeast Iowa. This is the cabin of our great-great-great grandparents, Norwegian immigrants who came here in 1853. We restored it in 1989, and it's really beautiful...a walk into the simple and quiet past. The electricity is made right here, by our solar panels (in cooperation with a bright and reliable star). Our land is a botanical sanctuary with United Plant Savers and is carpeted with native species that are medicinal and beautiful. The log house is filled with good energy from all the 165 years that people have lived here. It feels good to be connected to our past. It feels good to visit a place where the surfaces are brown, textured, and storied. And it feels good to remember that even without a phone ringing or email calling, you still know how to enjoy the passing of time. My ancestors didn't have any modern technology; we've added some but not too much. The solar electric system powers the refrigerator and the lights. There is running water and a simple way to heat it up. There's a modern cooking range, which doesn't fit the decor but works swell! There's a special toilet--ask for details if you're curious. If you want to use a computer, you can use a laptop and charge your battery but to get internet you'll need to drive to town. If you want to make a call, you can use the land line up at our house or take a short walk or drive up the hill to use your cell phone. Here you can experience what life was like before the constant ringing and beeping of now. In other words, it's simple. That's what you're looking for, right? A chance to get away from the clutter of everyday life, and a chance to step into another time: that's what you'll find at Fern Hollow Cabin. It is good. The cabin is 6 miles from Seed Savers Exchange and right next door to the Pepperfield Project, dedicated to promoting and teaching hands-on cooking, gardening and agrarian life skills. We're 6.5 miles from the beautiful town of Decorah where interesting things in the arts and outdoor activities are happening all the time. Whether you are alone or with a partner, bringing children or even a dog, we warmly invite you to come and stay for a day or more. Wrap yourself in the songs of the woods. We Love Kids and Kids Love it Here! Remember that time you went to an old museum cabin and wished you could stay all day and play? It’s like that, only this time you CAN stay. And not only do you get to read and play games and fall asleep and wake up in enchanted log house; on top of all that there’s the woods for running around, making forts, catching fireflies, picking flowers, and watching fairies. Just across the little bridge is a tiny log house, a favorite place for the young ones. It’s just far enough away that they feel brave to go there, but you can see them playing from the front yard of the (not-so) Big Log House. The tree fort, now sitting on stumps on the woods floor because the tree aged and died, is kinda’ modern-art: it’s pentangular, with a sun roof! Three kids can sleep in there easily during camp-outs from the retreat! We like to sing and dance with children and their families, and if you ask for a family singalong at the cabin you're almost sure to get one! Plus: swimming in Canoe Creek, campfires, stargazing, birdwatching, and seasonal events like cider pressing, gardening, black walnut gathering, maple syrup boiling, and maypole dancing. Our girls grew up in the log cabin, and we’ve left some of their favorite books, games, and art supplies down there for other kids to discover. There’s a small loom, marbles, wooden puzzles, homemade Lincoln logs, blocks, a flower press, and more. We look forward to meeting you!
There are so many wonderful things to do in and around Decorah. It is easy to spend many days here. Here are some places you may want to visit. (sorry it's not possible to insert live links here--you'll have to look them up yourself.) (URL HIDDEN) builds local community through arts, cultural, and recreational events. Here's where you can learn almost everything that's happening while you're visiting. Seed Savers Exchange, famous and wonderful, our own local national park! Pepperfield Project, Fern Hollow's next-door neighbor, where you can take classes and walk trails. Decorah Bike Trails, extensive and growing Vesterheim, the Norwegian Heritage museum that people drive days to see. Canoeing in the area, one of our most popular outdoor activities. NorthEast Iowa Fly Fishing Guide Service ArtHaus, where you can take in arts events or take classes Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce, your link to lots of businesses in the area. Ryumonji Zen Monastery, yes it's true and it's warm, welcoming, and unspeakably beautiful there. Welcome in Decorah, a Wedding Resource fo ALL Couples

Unsere Kinder waren von all ihren Entdeckungen begeistert.

(It is a working farm, but we promise you’ll get to relax!)
For years our local Girl Scout Camp (Camp Tahigwa) hosted groups of girls for week-long camps, some of which were in wall tents in the woods, overlooking the local trout stream. If you walk around our farm you’ll get to see the Canoe Creek, sheep and cattle, beehives busy at work and the beginnings of a pond project that will help mitigate flooding.
