  • Nice place in the "jungle"

    Mélanie2018-06-11T00:00:00Z
  • It was a awesome place to stay, there was a little odor from lots of moisture from the wood in the house, but outside on the deck having coffee in the mourning is great and the veiw of the ocean is great..

  • Rustic little cottage with gorgeous views! Friendly and quaint village, with a few cute cafes and restaurants.

    William2016-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • This cozy cottage made us feel like we were in our own treehouse. It was spacious with a view. Love all the nature sounds (frogs, birds). Hope to come back.

    Beth2016-12-12T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Blue Cottage. Honoka'a is a charming town with so much to do close by. Waipio Valley is the most majestic place I have been in the world. I would highly recommend hiking down to the beach, but make sure you bring plenty of water and be prepared to take out everything you bring in. We also enjoyed going to Mauna Kea on a star gazing tour night. This is a free event at the Visitor Information Station on certain nights of the week. Drive up in the early evening, watch the sunset, then you'll be in awe of the stars. The cottage is a great place to stay and the view is spectacular. We had a few issues with ants in the kitchen when we first arrived. We liked listening to the frogs at night, and just be prepared for a charming rooster to crow early in the morning. It was really nice to have a place to do laundry at the end of our trip. I would recommend staying at the blue cottage and would go there again.

    Andrew2017-11-12T00:00:00Z
  • Blue cottage is in a nice secluded area - it's almost like living in a tree house. We loved the view and the plants. Coqui frogs are loud but add to the experience in a good way - they didn't bother my husband but I used earplugs since I'm a light sleeper. Restaurants, coffee shops and a grocery store are 1-2 miles away. It's a perfect location. Nets really help keep mosquitos away.

  • Sehr schönes und Gemütlich!

    Leonie2018-04-17T00:00:00Z

  • The cottage is amazing!!!! Patricia and Mohamed were awesome! I will definitely stay here again and again!

    Ivie2016-04-26T00:00:00Z
  • The green cottage was perfect for what we needed it. We were attending a retreat in the mountain so the location was perfect for us. When we asked for a couple of things our hosts made sure we had them shortly after. The washer and dryer are great to have so pack lightly. The description is accurate. It is not luxurious just right. We are coming back!

    Clara2015-12-09T00:00:00Z
  • The screened in porch works surprisingly well. We had no trouble with bugs or mosquitoes and it's right in the jungle! Falling asleep to the rain and all the night sounds was a real treat.

    Terry2018-06-28T00:00:00Z
  • The house was even better than we imagined. The setting was perfect and everything we needed was in the cabin. We would rent it again.

Don't let the location fool you - our home is a beautiful place from which you can easily drive to any of the many beautiful destinations the island has to offer. Spacious, beautiful home with a comfy fireplace room, spacious kitchen, beautiful living room, dining room & back yard patio & bbq are shared with our family. Located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac with ocean breezes and a lovely view. Your bedroom and private bath are newly remodeled - just for you! Hope to see you soon!
Newly updated & remodeled, the bed & bath are tiled and spacious, clean & cool. We are a laid back & flexible family - we encourage you to enjoy our space with us! Grill on the back lanai, enjoy a drink watching the clouds over the ocean, join us for dinner or a movie. We can be as involved in your stay as you'd like. PLEASE NOTE we are woodworkers and there are stacks of wood around and often sawdust swirls onto the floors inside the house. We have a hungry family of 4 that extensively uses the kitchen - guests are MORE than welcome to use the kitchen & all amenities, but it IS used for full meals every day, so may often be in a state of transition.
Our neighborhood is quiet and friendly with children playing safely. Please drive slowly up the street! Honokaa town is a sleepy, wonderful nook on the island, and our corner of the town is a great place to experience the Hamakua coastline. Close to Waipi'o valley, equidistant from Hilo or Kona, an easy and beautiful drive to any of the treasures of the Island. Feel free to ask our advice! We will be more than happy to offer suggestions or recommendations to make your trip the best possible.

    Andreas2018-04-19T00:00:00Z
  • There are two things that make this listing exceptional: The value of what you get vs. what you pay and the unparalleled hospitality from Becky and JR. The value is made up of the reasonable price (with no cleaning fee!) vs. the truly high degree of comfort and spaciousness of your private bedroom and bathroom. Becky and JR go beyond that, though, responding to their guest's needs and questions and - at least for us - making you feel truly at home in their beautiful home. In hindsight, this would have been the perfect place from which to explore almost the entirety of the island - you're a decent drive away from anything but the south shore. Highly, highly recommended listing, and please say Aloha to Becky for us :D

  • Great hosts and helped us with local recommendations on our way from Kona to their place. Very clean room and bathroom with amenities. Quiet neighborhood, friendly dogs and cats in the house. Few minutes drive to Waipiʻo Valley Lookout and a historic Honokka town.

  • Becky, JR and their children were adorable! Very nice and friendly family making us feel at home. Clean and comfy room with big bed and clean nice private bathroom. One of the best air bnb I have stayed in Hawaii.

Located on the tropical Hamakua Coast in the historic town of Honokaa, this home has 2 decks with beautiful ocean view, beside a tropical gulch. It sleeps 6 with a Calif King Tempurpedic bed, a queen sofa sleeper & twin bamboo daybeds. The bamboo daybeds are good for children & short/average people. The home has 1.5 baths which include a spa tub & separate shower, free Wifi, Endless Wave pool and Koi pond. The kitchen is fully equipped with every thing you need to cook a meal. High speed Wifi.
“Luana Ola” in Hawai’ian means “To be at leisure, enjoying pleasant surroundings and good health”. Luana Ola VillaLuxury Home & Cottages are located on the tropical Hamakua Coast, near Waipio Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. Imagine watching from your own private lanai (deck) a panoramic, unobstructed view of the ocean, embraced between a Terra Verdeʹ of Hawaii and a never boring, brilliant Big Sky. The ocean reflects the sky that is often shaped by the ocean. The showers are mostly gentle, warm and do not wear out their welcome. And when the trade winds bring a heavy rain, they reward you with a white water river running through the gulch guarding you on the left. The sound of thundering white waters passing you as you eat dinner, read, or lay in bed will make you wish for another strong storm to come by. The sky oscillates between azure colors the Mediterranean cannot have, the grey of passing clouds, and on a clear night you can be tempted to pretend you are grabbing a sparkling jewel from a pitch black heaven. Spend the whole day simply relaxing or visit nearby Waipio Valley, the Big Island’s Grand Canyon with an ocean starting at a black sand beach, or drive 25 minutes to the Akaka Falls, among the tallest cascading falls in North America. Hilo, the Capital, is 45 minutes south of us. Kona is 50 minutes away. Hapuna Beach, voted the best beach in the State of Hawai’i and one of the top 10 beaches in the U.S., is 40 minutes from us. The active part of the Mauna Loa Volcano (the red eye) is 1.5 hours away. Our location is completely sheltered from the active vents on the Island by the massive 14,000 feet Mauna Kea Mountain. The house it self is 3 stories high with the garage on the ground level. The first floor is all open with the kitchen and dining room on one level and the living room and deck down 3 steps. There is also a 1/2 bath and a storage room. The upstairs has the spa bath, shower, etc., the bedroom, a sun room, deck, laundry area and closet. Plus a small office area with desk and printer/copier which you are welcome to use to print your boarding passes. Both toilets have a bidet attachment for better personal hygiene. There is not a lot of privacy between the bedroom area and the sun room. Anyone sleeping on the bamboo day beds must past the master bed to get to the bathroom. The Endless Wave pool is behind the house. It is solar heater and can be used with or without the wave function. Available for your use are beach towels, 2 boogie boards, snorkel gear, a cooler and a small Smokey Joe BBQ. Hawaii Transient Accommodations taxes (TAT) is 14.25% and is paid separately. Airbnb is not currently allowed to collect and pay the TAT. After your reservation is comfirmed and paid, I will request the tax money through Airbnb. Pack N Play & Umbroller available upon request.
The house is on a very quiet street in the historic Town of Honokaa. You can walk to a farmer's market on the corner, visit the many shops and restaurants, even see a movie in the Honokaa People's theater. They also have live performances. There is a library and a public pool.

    Angelo2017-06-19T00:00:00Z
  • WOW! What a great house! The views were fantastic, the house is spacious, clean, and well kept. All in all, very comfortable! THe location is complimented with a neighborhood cat, several neighborhood chickens and your own private waterfall when it rains. If you are on vacation and looking for loads of beach time it is going to be a bit of a drive from Honoka'a, but if you are looking for a quite, beautiful home to relax in and base out of to explore the north of the island, this is a great choice. I would definitely book here again.

    Chuck2016-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Our initial inquiry to book the Luana Ola Luxury home thru Airbnb was quickly & openly responded to by Mohamed & Patricia. The home was more than we expected as far as spaciousness & detailed facilities which accommodated our family well.

    Dawn2015-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • The home was spacious, well appointed and island-comfortable. Nice quiet neighborhood with beautiful ocean views and landscaping. Mohamed and Patricia were very professional and friendly all the way back to last August when we booked this stay. We can't say enough about what a nice place they have and great value for the money. Thank you both, this was a real pleasure!

    Bryan2016-05-21T00:00:00Z
  • This house is huge and super luxurious. It's a great place to relax. The small town is within walking distance with a number of shops. The pool area needed to be cleaned however, and was surrounded by mosquitoes and spider webs. Finally, this was the only listing over three weeks in hawaii that asked for tax to be paid separately. I prefer it being built into the price to avoid confusion for guests paying in foreign currencies.

    Katharina2016-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Loved this house and location. The neighborhood was quiet and rural, okay the frogs are incredibly loud at night but that didn't affect our sleeping. The king temperapedic mattress was a dream. Loved having the view, eating on the screened in porch and just relaxing. Enjoyed walking into town for produce at the nearby Filipino market, browsing through the unique antique and collectible shops, and grabbing a bite to eat. Tried Gramma's kitchen for good comfort food and Sea Dandelion for organic/vegan drinks. Zumba class at the community center on Monday evenings at 6:00 pm. Was fun to mingle with the locals who I then saw later in town. Everyone was so friendly. Also have to shout out to Hāwea Waipi'o Valley Adventure. Office/pick up location right in town. This is a private tour of Waipi'o Valley that will really give you an in depth cultural perspective and show off the natural beauty and plants.

This classic Hawaiian plantation house is well maintained and exhibits the vintage charm of old Hawaii with an ocean view. The house is surrounded on all four sides by tropical vegetation including a coconut tree, which welcomes you at the front of the house. A two minute walk takes you to quaint Honokaa town for gift shops, grocery stores or to see a movie at the local theatre. You may cook at home or eat out - Italian fine dining, Asian fusion, Grandmas kitchen, an all vegetarian cafe etc.
This is a great room for couples or a single person exploring the island. This room has a closet a dresser, night stands, and a view of the ocean. There is also plenty of light and a ceiling fan for warmer days. We have a second room available, in case you are traveling with other guests or family members. See other listing "Hibiscus Walk to town- II."
We are 7 miles from Waipio Valley, with a two-minute walk into town—a convenient location to grab a bite in town or go to the market.

  • This is a wonderful share situation with kind, generous & respectful hosts. Location was absolutely perfect for our needs and we truly couldn't have had a better experience. Anne and Ravi make me want to be a better host.

    Morgan2017-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • We checked in to a charming house with an equally pleasant host Ravi (Anne's partner; Anne was away on business). He welcomed us with tea, snacks as well as stories and tips about the area. We got on really well with one another and soon started sharing meals as well as stories about our home countries and ourselves. It was a very pleasant stay of 3 nights and we can definitely recommend this place to everyone. Ravi cut a young coconut just before our leave and treated us to wonderful fresh coconut juice! It was a great stay :-)

    Ketrin2017-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Anne's place was fabulous. I was there for a conference spending my days in one of the top $400 a night beach resorts on the island but each night I couldn't wait to get back to Anne's place. It has a wonderful breeze that comes though if you choose to open the window. The bedroom had plenty of drawers and a nice closet to hang up my clothes and the bed was super comfortable. The bedding and towels provided were great and the bathroom was extremely clean and had great water pressure. I didn't cook there but the kitchen was really cute and seemed to have everything available if needed. I loved that the house had hardwood floors throughout. Parking was easy and I felt very safe. Anne's place is in an adorable town. The downtown area has a great movie theater and plenty of places to shop and eat, all walking distance from Anne's place. Anne (and Robbie) are the perfect hosts. They were both extremely knowledgeable about the island and told me the best coffee shop and beaches to go to. They were always available to answer any questions and were so accommodating. As people they are easy going, easily approachable and helpful as needed. This home exceeded my expectations. For a great, laid back local Hawaii experience I highly recommend staying here. I loved it here. It has a great vibe. When I come back again to the Big Island this is where I will stay again.

    Heidi2017-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • Anne is a wonderful host. She helped me find some local spots and my stay was exactly what I was looking for. A bit secluded, close to waipio valley and close to some cafes in town. I would highly recommend staying here if you’re on the big island.

    Nikki2018-05-12T00:00:00Z
  • Anne ans Ragi where truly really sweet. We appreciated the fact that they worked with us with our last minute booking & technology failure shenanigans. We didn't meet Anne but Ragi welcomed us and helped us with places to see. Super welcoming and funny! We only had a problem with the ants or insects or the floor at random times (not too serious). And the never ending rooster in the morning but it's the islands so what do you really expect. Lol The location is great because we had Hilo that was 40ish minutes and Hapuna about the same. It's 15 minutes from Black sand beach. Market place less then 5min walk. I was scared about my 1st Airbnb, but I'm glad we chose them.

    Grace-Nelly2017-06-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful time in Anne's and Ravi's house. They are so warm-hearted, open-minded and helpful with everything. The room was perfect!! The location is also very good, very close to Waipio Valley, to a supermarket and the center of Honokaa. Hapuna beach and Akaka fall aren't far away either. We can definitely recommend to stay there!! And we'd love to come back sometime. Thx for everything, Anne and Ravi!!

  • Had an awesome stay.

    Sebastian2018-04-09T00:00:00Z
  • This cute bungalow home was perfect for our needs. It far exceeded our expectations and was perfect for our family business trip in Honoka'a! The location was ideal...close enough to walk to town, but in a quiet neighborhood with ocean views. It had all of the amenities that we needed and felt like home. We will definitely stay here again.

    Chad2018-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • Patricia was super helpful answering to all of our questions. My family and I enjoyed staying at Patricia's place. The place was perfectly clean and had all necessary amenities to make us confortable. It was fantastic to be surrounded by a whole jungle with a nice ocean view. In Hawai'i's Big Island everything is set at a considerable distance, but we found this place to have quite a convenient location in the middle of Kona and Hilo!

    Alejandro2018-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • This cozy bungalow is centrally located, including easy walking distance to Honoka’a’s Main Street, a short drive to Waimea or Hawi, and close enough for a day run for snorkeling at Hapuna Beach and Mauna Kea. We appreciated all the amenities and the updated decorating touches. Since it was pouring rain when we left, we really REALLY loved the garage, too. We highly recommend this spot as a good base for exploring both the Hamakua Coast and the Kohala district.

    Alison2018-05-09T00:00:00Z
  • The place was OK, clean and spacious and easy to find

    Anwar2018-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • A great location and comfortable house. We loved this little house, with its private garden, ocean view and walking distance to town. Honokaa is very convenient for sightseeing on the Big Island, the people were really friendly and the town was very clean. Looking forward to visiting again! Mahalo!

  • This stay had al we needed. Thanks to the refridgerator, toastmaker and coffee machine we could have breakfast in our room which was very practical! We only saw Mai once and she helped us out with a US adapter so we could charge our phones. She was very friendly and wanted to help where needed. She made us the suggestion to do a scenic drive and we definitely liked it so thanks Mai!

  • Perfect for being able to travel to each side of island and a five minute walk to a cool little bar (last call saloon) for a night cap.

  • Great place. Great price. Don't expect to sleep in. The mutual kitchen is right by the non closable window and on the other side is the fire station so we didn't need any alarms in the morning. We are already planning our next stay there in a year from now.

  • Just as described, with a touch of convenience in location. Great little quiet space with easy access to Honokaa Town. Old school appeal with access to modern amenities. I'd stay again.. in fact, I am!

    John2018-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • We encountered some ants near the sink area, and some of the ants crawled into my cousin's suitcase when it was placed near the sink on the first night. We didn't place any food near the sink so we're unsure what caused this. Both of us also discovered that the area on the couch (towards the back, next to the wardrobe) smelled distinctly of urine. On the other hand, check in was very convenient and the space provided everything we needed. However the listing should be adjusted to reflect the shared nature of the restroom. Although there are two separate restrooms, it is still shared by both the studio and the 3-bedroom guests staying on the property.

Located on Mamane St in historic downtown Honokaa, this cozy cottage is tucked away in a sweet pocket of tropical jungle; surrounded by lush native trees, plants and flowers, yet is only steps away from restaurants, shops, and the People's Theatre.
This beautiful newly renovated cottage has many handcrafted finishing touches, including special features made with locally harvested wood, ceramic tiles and wooden carvings set against the backdrop lush Hawaiian jungle full of fruiting trees and vines and lush tropical flowers. There is a full kitchen space with gas stove, large refrigerator, water filter and a bar for eating inside. There is also a dining space on the covered back lanai of the main house. The daybed/couch is in the sitting area and can provide an extra sleeping space. The bedroom space has a queen-sized bed with an organic woolen mattress for a peaceful night's sleep. The bathroom is a sanctuary featuring a jacuzzi tub overlooking a meditative moonscape mosaic made of stone and glass. Bathroom has a stall shower as well. The ohana is set far enough off of the street that town seems like it is miles away!
Honokaa town is a quaint old town bustling with many cafes and lovely shops. Many of the restaurants use fresh local ingredients and have sustainable business practices. Honokaa also has many interesting resale shops where one can hunt for amazing vintage Hawaiian treasures as well as a few upscale boutiques. There is a pharmacy, a small supermarket, the local watering hole, a fruit and vegetable stand, and a local farmer's market right across the street from the Magic Garden cottage on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Honokaa has a great park for kids just a five minute walk away, where there is a new jungle gym and skate park. There are free tennis courts and a local swimming pool also just 5 minutes walk from the cottage. Honokaa is only a 12 minute drive to the incredible, awe-inspiring Waipio Valley, valley of kings. Waipio is quintessential Hawaiian nature: black sand beach, taro fields, waterfalls, and river that will awaken your senses and connect you to the mana of Hawaii.
  • Your home was a beautiful space to spend my time. The location right across the cultural center was so good. I also very much appreciated the timely responses! Thank you!

  • This is a lovingly built, well maintained and clean cottage at the back of a main house (currently a store, so there is privacy in the evenings). Walking distance along the main street to all shops, restaurants and the supermarket of Honoka'a. Excellent home base to explore the top and west end of the island (glorious Hapuna Beach is not far). This place is on the rainy side of the Big Island and therefore a bit damp; luckily there is a dehumidifier in the hallway. The owner Sara lives about 15 min away and is very responsive, friendly and welcoming. The cottage can sleep 3 people, but it really is meant for 2 (just two chairs available, for example). If you love to cook, this may not be perfect since the kitchen is supplied a bit sparingly. But there is a full sized gas stove with oven. Overall highly recommended.

  • Great location, thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

  • I loved this place!!! It was even better than I expected! It's right in town but back from the road so you feel like you are in the jungle! The inside is beautiful and nicely decorated, and I loved the jacuzzi tub!! It really felt like coming home every day! I only wish I could have stayed longer. The resident cat Moonbeam is so sweet, too! I didn't get a chance to meet Sara but she was very nice and communicative! Thank you for a great stay!

    Lydia2018-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Nestled away from the street at the end of a driveway. Found everything very private. clean and comfortable. There is a creek outside and, along with the music of the chirping frogs, we were able to get some incredible sleep. Highly recommend this place and if we ever get back to the Big Island this will be the first place I call.

  • Staying at Sara's place made me happy I stayed right in Honokaa. It was the perfect place to explore the town from, buy groceries, eat out, even see a film at the Peoples Theatre. The cottage was very clean and comfortable, the kitchen well stocked with pots and pans, etc. I highly recommend staying there.

    David2018-04-06T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect location, just at the edge of town. Quiet and welcoming. Easy walking distance to the restaurants and shops. Nice big bathroom and a well appointed kitchen. Very clean! Neighbors in front house so quiet we didn’t even hear them once. Moonbeam, the outside kitty is super friendly. We will stay again next time business brings us to town!

Private Master Bedroom on the main strip of Historic Honokaa town! 10 mins to Waipio Valley ( second most visited spot) black sand beaches & waterfalls. Being north makes it easy to explore either side of the island! 1 min walk to restaurants, shops, groceries, pub. Includes, free parking, cable, wifi, & across the street is a free public pool! When you walk out of the rooms there's a Koi pond in the courtyard, you get to experience a true indoor/outdoor Historic Hawaiian Plantation house!
We are north so we do not get any VOG and is safe from the volcanic activity. We have many people evacuating to this area it has the best air quality all year round. The Master Bedroom has as sitting area with two chairs, with a peak of ocean! a very spacious room! With Hawaiian style furniture and a fan that keeps the room cool for hot nights. Shared Bathrooms and shared kitchen are in separate areas this is great because the bedrooms are quite. When you walk out of the house there's an open air walkway out side with Koi pond that connects to the shared kitchen and bathrooms this is what I fell in love with you. You get to experience the historic Hawaiian style plantation house.
Is a safe neighborhood and we are right next to the fire and police station so it's very safe. You are on the main strip so it's easy to walk to town to the restaurants, groceries, markets, shops and pub! Free public pool across the street. Also my shave ice shop is just in front, make sure you stop by! Just let them know you are my renter and they will give you free toppings or ice cream with your shave ice!
  • The Mai's place is also on the list of historic buildings in Honokaa. That gives really a authentic and old style Hawaiian sugar plantation experience ! Honokaa has a own architecture character and will make your place wonderful time! Staying in Honokaa is better in the weekends and at the events (Honokaa Western Week, First Friday of Month, Sunday Farmer Market and more).

  • Mai is a really friendly and communicative host- she even invited me to come along on a night dive with manta rays (sadly I cannot swim). She was also very gracious when an unexpected turn of events prevented me from being able to stay for the 2 nights I had originally booked- allowing me to alter my reservation. The space is set up similarly to a hostel in that the kitchens and bathrooms are shared and somewhat separate from the rest of the home- something to be aware of. But the house is unique and historical, which is cool, and it's in a great location. Honoka'a is small but charming; some of the friendliest people I've ever met I encountered here. Thank you Mai for everything!

    Nikki Kim2018-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • Mai's place is great! Very clean, quiet, and spacious. Mai is very responsive and welcoming! She had a great outline of things to do in the area, and provided additional suggestions when I inquired. Great value, I'd stay again!

  • Mai is nice, kind host, the property is epic with it’s history, clean and quiet. We enjoyed our stay in Honokaa.

    Kateřina2018-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Kind host and nice decor made the place good enough for a brief stay. My mistake to not read more carefully to know that the "master bedroom" that we booked didn't have an en suite bathroom. However, no mention that to access the shared bath one has to walk in front of people watching tv, outside, and down an external corridor. Not a big deal, but certainly far short of expectations when one books a "master bedroom." Noise was our other surprise. Walls are thin and we heard the common tv outside our door, clear voices late night from the adjacent room (with a sealed door between the two), walkie-talkies outside late into the night from the police/fire departments, and a steady flow of early morning diesel trucks from the utility parking lot down the road. The property had an old-island bunk-house charm, nonetheless, and would've worked out better if it were priced about 30% less. (As island residents we know what money buys here, and this fell short).

    Ken2018-05-06T00:00:00Z

This classic Hawaiian plantation home has three bedrooms. The room that is available in this listing has a lovely view of a lush native hibiscus bush that flowers all year. The room has lots of light. Enjoy being close to the historical town of Honokaa. You can walk to town, visit Grandma's for breakfast, see a movie in the quaint People's Theater. We are also seven miles away from Waipio valley, making this a convenient place to stay while you organize your day trip into the beautiful valley.
We share the kitchen with our guests and even share a cup of tea when we are around. A communal shelf provides the basics for cooking, salt, pepper, items left behind by previous guests, etc. There is a nice porch and a yard with lots of lawn space for relaxing, reading a book, or just wandering around to enjoy the tropical plants that surround us. This is a tropical oasis with the convenience of walking to town. Please see our other listing of a second room available in the same house.
Our neighborhood is quiet (except for the roosters). My favorite thing to do is to walk to the local movie theater and watch one of the two latest releases that they feature. The il Mondo Italian restaurant down the street serves an excellent pizza pie and the shops offer some great gift ideas. We live in on a small street, so its a pretty quiet place to spend the day.
  • Anne's spot was just the right fit for a short weekend stay. She was even able to provide an upgrade to make the stay very nice. Old style home with wood floors this has a remodeled clean glass door tile shower that was very appreciated. Bonus for tall guys, with the bathroom vent fan running you can shave in the mirror from in the shower. The kitchen was fully stocked and the stove and oven were used to cook meals from "home". Thank you Anne for a wonderful stay. Aloha!

  • I didn't know about movie "Honoka boy" by arriving here. This town Honoka brought me back to my childhood. Very peace n several lovely shops n restaurants(there are Cristal shop n organic shpo vegetalian restaurant too) even though small town. (Unfortunatry., The movie theater of the movie "Honoka boy" was not running by electric problem.) Anne's home is very cloth to the central of Honoka town n big supermarket just few mins walk. I don't drive n I stayed alone. Buses runs just few times a day. However., this host couple helped me a lot. They helped me many way like took me to nice places n share me foods n their idea n helped to book airplane tickets etc. as possible as the can do for me. Their hear are opend n big. We had same truth n connected soon. Their hospitality was wonderful!! I didn't feel lonely n uncomfortable. I felt I was staying at my friend's home. Thank you Anne n Rabi for your wonderful hospitality.

  • Anne and Ravis were so welcoming and friendly! Their place is so peaceful and has such a good energy. One of the best Airbnb's that I've ever had!

    Perlita2017-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • Just from the first email communication I could tell that Anne & Ravi are very welcoming people. Unfortunately Anne was on a trip but I had a very good time with Ravi! Nice talks and a couple of teas, that's all you need to create a warm atmosphere. I had a very nice stay here and would absolutely recommend this place!

    Jorgen2017-06-08T00:00:00Z
  • Anne's place was a great location for getting to know Honokaa and the surrounding area of north Big Island and the Hamakua coast down to Hilo and Puna. Ravi and Anne are great cooks who were happy to share with me.

    Lynn2017-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • Anne and Ravi are the most hospitable and generous hosts. Their home is lovely and they make guests feel completely welcome. Their cooking, which they were kind enough to share, is delicious. I loved my visit and already want to return. I am grateful to them both for such a delightful experience!

    Tasha2018-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • The home was clean, comfortable, well located in Honokaa, and friendly welcome. Only hic: I first rented for one person then a friend added to my trip. So I wished to change and rent for two in order to save, but we were told that we could not change ...

    Laure2017-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Staying with Anne and Ravi was one of the highlights of my time on the Big Island. Their home is warm and welcoming, and in a great location that makes exploring the Waipi'o Valley, Waimea, Mauna Kea, and even the area of Hawi easy (by car). Having use of their kitchen was a big plus, and made my stay feel even more homey, but the outstanding aspect of this Air BnB is really the hosts. Anne and Ravi were very social with me, which I really appreciated as a solo traveler. We shared meals, explored the Waipi'o Valley, and enjoyed some great conversations and movies during my stay (definitely check out the old movie theatre in town). If you're lucky enough to stay here, don't hesitate to book this!

The guest house will be accented by local fruit, flowers, fresh local chocolate, and other bounty from the land upon arrival. (Caveat: wi-fi MAY be sketchy and WILL be slower than you are used to due to circumstances beyond my control. (Verizon has good service here))
Large balcony and fresh trade wind air. Peaceful view of the ocean looking North. Kitchen with mini fridge/freezer. No oven. Tile bathroom/shower with Stained glass. There is a new, full-size bed (i know, the other description says: 'Queen') in the main indoor living space, extra linens are stored in drawers underneath the bed. There is a twin bed in the loft. Local coffee, tea, and chocolate tea are provided as well as a variety of local spices and sugar or honey.
We visit Laupahoehoe Point regularly, our nearest easy ocean access. For hiking, Forest, and native forest Kalopa park is straight up the mountain. Hilo is a 50 minute drive from here, end it will take you about that long to get to the nearest white sandy beaches.

  • I’ve written and deleted this review at least 4 times as I’ve been unsure about whether or not I should Post it but since the experience greatly affected us and our vacation time on the big island I feel like It’s only fair that i share it for other potential guests. We had booked 3 nights and 4 days but stayed only 2 nights. A lot of the reviews here mention the cleanliness which I can attest too - the place is sadly not at all clean and the “new” mattress is saggy and uncomfortable. The internet was non existent as there’s no code and no welcome note so we could not connect. The shower is awesome and there is hot water. The homemade chocolate is excellent. The stars at night are incredible. There is no mold just a lot of grime... However - we had another issue which led us to leave early. I left to go to the store and my husband stayed back in bed with a headache. Not long after I left and apparently the host left his property too, did we have an unwanted visitor (either perfect timing or they were keeping tabs on us) and a strange looking couple physically snuck into the guest house through the sliding door (either pure chance or they’d been there before and knew which door to try) while my husband was sleeping. They didn’t just try to come in, they actually did come in. Both the fly screen door and the glass sliding door were shut all the way when I left so they had some Nerve to come In like that - it wasn’t like the door was left wiiiide open! Luckily my husband woke up - albeit to them IN our guest house - and in a groggy state said “what are you doing here” to which the female yelled out “oh shit there’s someone here” and they both RAN out of there and left. Now. I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt and I do hate making assumptions but based on the lady’s reaction it seems they were spooked and our only reasonable explanation (and gut instinct) is that they were planning on robbing the place and they didn’t think anyone was home. We felt really uneasy so we decided to pack our stuff right away and we left. Being a Friday the island was 99% booked out (according to hotel booking websites) and we had no choice but to take one of the only rooms left on the island at a hotel twice over our budget. The situation left me realising that as idyllic as the guest house could be, it IS at the end of a long road - a dead end with no immediate neighbours, no dogs, and relatively far from the hosts house hidden behind bushes and a barn/garage. The doors don’t lock well , and the windows are big enough for anyone to climb through them, there...

    Davina2018-01-21T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great stay at Josh's guesthouse. Josh was caught working so he wasn't there to welcome us, but the place was easy to find and ready for our arrival. The pictures accurately represent the space and everything was as expected on arrival. Great finishings and appliances, we cooked several meals and found the shower to be hot with good pressure. Josh gave us a tour of his farm and some great recommendations for dinner in town. The bed is a pull out futon, which is reasonable for two people. It's a little creaky and has a thin mattress (so it folds away), not super comfortable, but worked fine and we slept well. There is also a single mattress in the loft if the pull-out doesn't suit.

    Alex2017-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Joshua 's place is beautiful and exactly what we needed. He gave us an amazing welcome basket of fruit and chocolate, we had morning coffee looking out at the ocean and gazed at the unreal starry night sky. We felt lucky to be there.

    Lara2018-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • This place is as advertised. The thing that it doesn't include is the fact that Joshua is a perfect host, both accommodating and respectful of the island and her guests. The space was very nice and the location feels remote, however is actually close to some decent shopping and a few amazing restaurants. The view and property are very serene. We stayed two weeks and had little to complain about. If your looking for a central place to see both sides of the island, this is the perfect place!

A private room in a restored Dance Hall in Kapulena, a village above magical Waipio Valley. Experience historic and authentic Hawaii. Away from the resorts and closer to nature, a hikers heaven. Hamakua coast offers botanical diversity you'll love.
This is an historic dance hall that has been renovated keeping its charm intact. It has big front rooms with high ceilings. The near two acres are alive with old mature fruit trees and a massive front yard to relax and enjoy the tropical setting.
Our neighborhood is diverse as well as friendly. We are in a very rural area, does have early morning roosters and we have nice soft earplugs if needed. We are located in a very small village of Kapulena on the road to Waipio Valley.

She was a great host and provided us with a delicious breakfast that fueled our adventures the next day. Diana's house is about 100 years old and has an old-fashioned bathtub as well as an outside shower. We didn't really want to spend time figuring out the bathtub and were too modest to shower outside, so we did forgo showers will staying here. I watched TV using the (Website hidden by Airbnb) problems with that. Overall, it was a good stay!

  • I can't say enough good things about this woman. Warm, powerful, present. A true host. And that's not even the house. Old and full of character, her 1.6 acres have a story to tell. Go. Listen, and be welcomed and cradled in true Hawaii.

    Ashley2015-11-19T00:00:00Z
  • Diana was the best host! We loved the house and location. Diana made us delicious breakfast and advice on what to do in the valley. Highly recommend! We wished we had stayed more days here.

    Celeste2016-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • I loved Diana's spacious, converted dance hall home with its huge rooms and wooden floors. And Diana herself was a treat: a warm, generous, interesting lady who struck just the right balance of providing us with company and leaving us to ourselves. The coffee she grows and roasts on her farm was the best we had in all of Hawaii. My only minor complaint is that her house is a bit noisy at night, not because of music or traffic, but just because the old house is creaky and groany, and because the neighbour raises roosters that like to get up very early!

    Tannis2016-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • This place is a little secluded and out of the way but perfect for exploring Waipio Valley and the beautiful Hamakua Coast. Very easy to get to from downtown Honokaa. House has a lot of charm and Diana is a very gracious and helpful host. She works for a tour company and made arrangements for exploring Waipio very easy for me. Great to spend some time in the kitchen with her and John. Both are lovely people. The room can be a little noisy - the combination of frogs and roasters next door but Diana provided great ear plugs and even as a light sleeper I was able to block out the noise. Bed very comfy, bathroom clean.

We live in a rain forest and occasionally will come across the mysterious pueo (owl), this peaceful place is called, Ka Hale Pueo (The House of the Owl). On a clear night you can light up the fire pit and stargaze! Inside you will find a cozy and modern country decor with most of the necessities you need. E komo mai! (Welcome!)
Ka Hale Pueo is located on a 5 acre estate with an entry gate. Your private one bedroom guest house has a private car port for your use. The cozy living room is equip with jealousies to keep your guest house cool throughout the day. It also has a room heater for those few chilly nights we have in Hawaii. Enjoy a bowl of popcorn while watching your favorite TV show or relax and unwind from your day. The spacious main bedroom comes with a comfortable queen-size bed. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to prepare your favorite meals. The main house, where I am, is adjacent to your private guest house. We have enough space and distance between one other that grant you your own privacy, yet I am not too far should you need any assistance throughout your stay.
Ahualoa is mostly 5 acre farm lots with surrounding horses and animals. The historical town of Honoka'a is located only 10 minutes away. You will find restaurants, shopping, a grocery store, movie theatre, laundry mat and farmer's markets for your convenience.
  • If we could stay here forever, we would. My wife and I lucked into finding Ka Hale Pueo while searching for places to stay in North Big Island, as Allison’s place is frequently booked. If you find yourself in need of a peaceful, magical getaway that is conveniently located near Honoka’a, Waimea, Mona Kea, Waipi’o...then this is your place. Because the guesthouse is located on a secluded farm/ranch in the rainforest, you really feel as if you are stepping into another world - a relaxing place far from the madness of the real world. All of this would be great on its own, but what really makes this place a cut above everyone else is Allison, our host. Allison couldn’t have been sweeter, or more accommodating, and the gifts she left us were always a pleasant surprise to find after a day hiking or snorkeling. She is a fount of information, and she has obviously put a lot of thought and care into anticipating her guests every needs. If you get the chance, stay at Ka Hale Puleo. You won’t regret it.

  • Allison and her place were exceptional. We extended our stay and will definitely be staying there again next.

  • This rental is so awesome! It's cozy and off the beaten path - a true Hawaiian hideaway. The cottage is decorated so nicely, with owls incorporated throughout. It's clean and modern. The property is so beautiful. There's a private lanai and we enjoyed sitting around the fire pit at night. It's so peaceful and quiet here. Add in the very comfy bed and it's no wonder we slept so soundly during our stay! Our host, Allison, was so hospitable, friendly, and accommodating! She made the whole process so easy and we felt welcome in her home. We even ran into her at a local restaurant and she came over to ask how our night was going. Super friendly family. We will definitely try to stay here again! It was just perfect for us. Honokaa is a super charming old town and staying here will acquaint you with an authentic Big Island experience.

  • The place is beautiful, safe, private and comfortable even for a longer stay. It has everything you need and even more. We loved it, I totally recommend Allisons place for singles to famlilies. Allison was welcoming and an excellent happy host full of lovely supprises :) (morning coffee etc. )

  • Our stay at Allison's place was fantastic! She is the most friendly, patient, and accommodating host I've had to date. There were tons of special touches and my dad and I really appreciated her attention to detail. We felt totally spoiled! The place was spotless and had absolutely everything you'd need or want for a comfortable stay. The kitchen and bathroom were fully stocked, and there were even spices and cleaning supplies so we felt right at home! The lanai and whole property are so beautiful and relaxing, and we had tons of privacy! I slept really well in the bed too, and my dad was comfortable on the futon. We also liked the central location to all the activities we wanted to do. We were really only an hour or hour and a half from everywhere, and close to Waimea which was a nice town with all the amenities and groceries. I'd highly recommend Allison's place and would return in a heartbeat!

    Laura2018-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • A great central spot with access to Hilo, botanic gardens and waterfalls, Volcano, Waimea, the northern valleys, Kona, and the western beaches. Nice and peaceful area and refreshingly cooler in the evenings. We appreciated having a few supplies in the pantry and fridge.

    Gabor2018-06-17T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely loved our stay here at Alison’s! She was so hospitable & kind. The house is a complete dream with all the accomadations you need & more, plus the most peaceful place nestled amongst the woods. Definitely recommend her place to anyone who would want to experience a 10 out of 10 amazing Airbnb experience!

    Gabrielle2018-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • Allison is the definition of a perfect host. Met us with open arms, made us feel as if we were family, gave us our space and privacy, anticipated our needs, helped us make plans and made suggestions for our outings, and generally made the trip MORE memorable and enjoyable. She was there with baskets of goodies, ensured the place was immaculate, stocked the Ohana with goodies prior to our arrival, answered our questions and even helped us with meal reservations! If Airbnb had an Oscar for their host's, Allison would get the golden statue for best Host EVER!!!! Thank you Allison for making our stay beyond FABULOUS! The place is so comfortable, stocked with everything you'll need and more. As much privacy and surrounding serenity as you can stand, and so wonderful to come "home" to after a day exploring the island.

There are no street lights in the area, so it is very dark at night. It may be a challenge to find us at night for the first time.
  • Alles war wie beschrieben. Wunderbar nettes kleines Haus in einem kleinen Refugium. Alle Tiere sehr zutraulich. Alles sehr entspannt hier. I loved it

  • Located in an area both close to Wapio valley and the north side activities this little gem was the perfect retreat. The room was just the right size for moving around and the bed was real comfortable with a nice heavy comforter if you get chilly. Just a few steps outside to the bathroom and shower that is lighted along the way. Sleep to the sounds of the Coqui frog (they reminded was of the tree frogs at night). There is a nice cooking area with BBQ grill and a gas stove for use.

  • Bebo and Karen are wonderful hosts. Their custom built tiny house was perfect for our needs, providing us with privacy and comfort. I wish we would have taken more use of the outdoor kitchen. The outdoor shower was hot and the motion sensing lights were greatly appreciated at night. The coffee provided was amazing (beans from their Coffee farm) as was the home made bread. We stayed two nights and will definitely stay again next time we are in town.

  • Nice quiet place in the forest, relaxing. Mai was always super responsive and incredibly friendly.

    John2016-12-21T00:00:00Z
  • The place is beautiful, sparkling clean, luxurious beds - very relaxing after a day of sightseeing. Very clean and fresh mountainous air, beautiful forest with bamboo, very pretty courtyard. Very good price, too. There is one drawback - it's kind of isolated, and you need to drive everywhere. There is no hiking trails in the forest, and don't try to walk on the public road, because there are unleashed guard dogs everywhere, they may just run at you from somebody's open gate while the owner is nowhere in sight. Other than that, perfect. Also, since it's located at the tip of the island, you can drive to both sides equally easily, to the sunny one with beaches and to the rainy one with hikes.

    Yulia2018-06-06T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the time we spent here. The kitchenette is basic but functional with a dual hot plate, toaster oven and small microwave. We appreciated quiet, tucked away location. It was a bit of a challenge finding the driveway the first time in the dark. The coqui frogs serenaded us to sleep each night. We would stay here again

    Jeff2017-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Mouse droppings everywhere in the house -- bed, drawers, tabletop (especially under the microwave oven), there was even one in the coffee pot! A few giant cockroaches that we met were a minor issue in comparison.

    Maxim2017-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • I quiet location on the outside of small town of Honaka'a. The interior is nicely appointed with a great window view. Could not have been happier with this place.

  • This place is absolutely fantastic! One of the best places to stay on the Big Island. It is located on the lush and verdant eastern side of the island, and surrounded by nature, but only a 40 min drive to the beaches on the western side. The space is gorgeous, with tons of thoughtful touches. The rooms are super clean, lots of places to sit and read, 3 outdoor decks to relax in nature and enjoy the sunshine on a hammock. Jacqueline is welcoming and very thoughtful, and makes the most amazing breakfast every morning. Altogether the perfect place for a very relaxing vacation.

  • Great location. Super quiet. Amazing breakfast.

    Ethan2018-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • This house is everything the ad seems to indicate and more. It's a very cool period house that's been remarkably upkept, and the back balcony/patio area is gorgeous. It's a bit more formal than some airbnb's I've stayed at - more like a very traditional Bed and Breakfast of the old-school (ie breakfast at 8am), and it was very quiet when we checked in around 830pm and we felt we needed be quite reserved even at that early time. So if you're looking for a place to casually lounge around in and roll out of bed at any hour to relax and eat, it may not fit the bill. But the place is fascinating to stay at and the breakfast was a lovely homemade feast with nice guests all at the same table conversing. Would stay again.

    David2018-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • This place exudes an old world charm and Jacqueline is a wonderful host. We enjoyed the wholesome breakfast and interactions with other residents at the breakfast table. The location is just about perfect to setup base and leisurely explore the northern side of Big Island.

  • Jacqueline was an amazing host who made me feel very welcome. Her house was beautiful, and her tips on local sights impeccable. She went out of her way to try to make my trip more enjoyable. I would definitely stay here again on my next trip to the Big Island and would recommend her to my friends and family.

    Erik2017-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • Waipio Wayside is a gem—Jacqueline has put her personal touch on every inch of this b&b. You can feel the history of the place the moment you walk in. It's a one of a kind. The homemade breakfast is delicious. Waipio is sleepy—aside from the valley (which is outstandingly beautiful) and a small (but tasty) cookhouse down the road, there's not much around. Which was exactly what we were looking for.

    Maggee2018-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful gem of a place with lovely hospitality and lots of thoughtful touches. Jacqueline is a great host. Waipio Valley is spectacular and there are lots of lovely other places in the area so I would definitely go again and stay in this same place.

Rainbow Bee is located on our formerly active, 5 acre honey bee farm with lots of fruit trees - cozy and serene with an earthy elegance that you will love. It has two glass sliding doors that open onto a large deck & overlooks a lily pond.
The cottage has one spacious bedroom with sitting area, a country style kitchen area, a dining room and a bathroom. The bedroom itself is about 300 sq ft with a queen size bed, a pull rattan couch & chair and a TV & DVD player to enjoy a movie after a day of exploring. There is also wireless internet in the room. Rainbow Bee Farm Cottage is converted from the tour/education building of our once active honey farm where for the past 20 years we produced a world famous gourmet honey - Rare Hawaiian Organic White Honey. (We recently retired from and sold the honey business.)
Rainbow Bee Farm Cottage is located in Ahualoa, a bucolic country, farming and artisan community. Nearby community includes an award winning goat cheese farm, an estate grown coffee farm that produces the best coffee we have ever tasted, an organic green tea farm, an alpaca farm and an internationally know pottery studio and a blown glass artist studio. With advance notice, we can arrange for you tours of any of these farms and studios. You will love the adorable alpacas or goats, the unmatched aroma of Hamakua coffee and the exquisite landscaping at the coffee farm. Or may be you will enjoy learning the ins and outs of a Japanese tea ceremony. Let us know in advance and we will do our best to arrange for you a memorable experience at one or more of these special artisan farms. We are just three miles from Honokaa, a quaint historic town on the North East side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Honokaa main street shops offer a large variety of creations by local artists and artisans. Several cafe/restaurants in Honokaa serves delicious healthy food made from fresh local ingredients. Ahualoa is a great destination to explore the hidden gems of Hamakua Coast. Honokaa is 12 miles from beautiful Waipio Valley Lookout, the most visited place on Big Island, second only to Volcano. You can walk down the Waipio Valley or drive down if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. (Be prepared to do a vigorous hike up if you walk down the valley.) Down in the valley you will see a black sand beach with a stream flowing across the beach out to the ocean. There are often wild horse roaming around in the valley. Waipio is also a great surfing spot. You can also hike to a waterfall from the beach. There are plenty of options to tour in and above this beautiful valley - a mule drawn wagon tour, horseback riding tour or ATV tour for those looking for more adventure. For the energetic visitors, you can also hike down into the valley which is not difficult. The challenge is coming back up from the bottom. A scenic drive down the Hamakua Coast gives you views of beautiful waterfalls and coastline. Historic Hilo town is 43 miles down the Hamakua Coast. Hilo is a beautiful old town that still has centuries old wooden storefronts – many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. A stroll down the Hilo's Banyen Drive is not to be missed. This majestic, banyan tree-lined street at the shoreline of Hilo Bay is known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame" for the banyan trees planted by celebrities, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Richard & Pat Nixon, Amelia Earhart, and many other important individuals, including religious leaders and politicians both from Hawaii and around the world. These trees have withstood several tsunamis and spread their broad canopies near the edge of the shoreline. It is a pleasant walk under the shade and incredible beauty of these trees and view of the ocean. your stroll can continue into classic example of an authentic Japanese garden that is enjoyed by both locals and visitors. About 26 miles in the other direction (northwest) towards Kona is Hapuna Beach, one of the most beautiful and accessible beaches on the island.
  • We really enjoyed our visit to the Rainbow Bee Farm. Richard was an amazing and attentive host, showing us around when we arrived and making sure that we were comfortable and well acquainted with our lodgings. The location is rural, peaceful and serene. The beaches are 30 minutes drive away, in case it's raining you can zip right over there and enjoy snorkeling and swimming. We didn't get a chance to meet Candice this trip, but hope to return one day and get acquainted. Wonderful people, great place!

    Laura2016-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Candice and Richard are amazing host. The cottage is very homey, clean, and roomy. We stayed here for 3 days at the first part of our trip and now we are ditching our second rental and heading back to finish our trip with them. You can't go wrong staying with them. I highly recommend staying at their lovely cottage.

    Alesha2016-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Candice and Richard were truly amazing hosts - they sent us really helpful directions to the cottage, and were there to meet us when we arrived with some great recommendations of what to see while we were in the area. Everything about the cottage was well thought out and there was a really positive, restful atmosphere to the whole experience. It was chilly when we came, but the fireplaces throughout the cottage made everything warm and comfortable. One of our best airbnb experiences - thanks Candice & Richard!

    Leeann2016-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • This place is wonderful, we stayed after walking the Waimanu Valley hike as its proximity is excellent. It's super comfortable, your hosts are incredibly considerate, (there are even heated towel racks in the bathroom, warming your towels and helping them dry quickly, for after your shower). The accommodation is on an old honey farm, worth visiting, close to a little village where we picked up food that evening (it has a well equppied kitchen for food preparation, we were merely too knackered post the strenuous hike to do too much). Highly recommended, off the beat and track, for the traveller who has more interest in quality adventure away from tourist flooded generic spaces.

    jo2013-12-20T00:00:00Z
  • Candice and Richard are wonderful hosts! Interesting people, interesting lives, always very responsive to my needs, yet they gave me all the privacy I needed. The space is very SERENE, remote, peaceful, grounding, slightly rustic. Really nice. No traffic noise! Perfect place for a retreat.

  • The rainbow bee farm is a beautiful and magical resting place nested on the heights of Honoka'a. The "mana" is vibrant here. The house is very very clean, well organized with many small items which made a difference in our stay (sleepers, candles, books, 3 towels per person, electric heater looking like a chimney, insect repellent, umbrella, etc.). Candice was an excellent host who was there to receive us and give us many advice and explanations for our trip. That is a shame we did not have the time to do the tour of their bee farm... But next time we will! Highly recommended place!

    A-Carole2016-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • Candice & Richard were the perfect hosts. They were prompt, accommodating, gave great recommendations, knew the area so well, and were super friendly. Their cottage was spotless & clean, well-organized, had all the necessary accoutrements, and was serene and calming in a rural setting yet close to town. The cottage had more room than we needed and part of the lodging was set up as a classroom of sorts with interesting bee-keeping exhibits where we learned about the art and science of apiculture. We cannot recommend them enough.

  • The experience that we had at the Rainbow Bee Farm was very peaceful, pleasant, quiet and relaxing. I would recommend the place to anyone looking for quiet solitude in one of the most beautiful locations we experienced on the island. Candice and Richard were both very sweet, kind and genuine people who made us feel completely at home. Candice was traveling the whole time we were staying at the rainbow bee farm but she was very responsive to email, phone calls and texts. Candice was also incredibly thorough and descriptive when it came to directions on how to get to the place as well as what to expect when we were there. She even created a binder with all the little quirks and advantages that were offered within the property. Richard was there the whole time and we got to meet this warm, kind and amazing man who had created the Volcano Island Honey Compnay. Being a retired Bee Farmer, who has lived on the island for decades, he had a very wide range of tips, stories and a genuine gentleness and wisdom about him that was incredibly endearing. Richard was very willing to share with us which local places to check out and insider tips for newcomers to the big island. We feel like we could have easily sat and talked with Richard for hours as he is the kind of person you would wish was your neighbor and friend. Unfortunately, we were always off experiencing all the adventures on the island and Richard was keeping himself busy with the property. We would absolutely stay here again and honestly can't say enough good things about the place!

This lovely cottage sits on 8 beautiful , very quiet & private acres, with wide expansive ocean views. There are high cathedral ceilings and large floor to ceiling windows all around to make the most of the inspiring views while reading, writing, drawing, painting or just simply sitting and taking in the peace and calm that this lovely cottage offers.
This special piece of paradise is very private and quiet and completely off the grid. Please remember to be conservative with lights, cooking, and all power appliances.
This very peaceful "old Hawaii" setting is just 15 minutes from the gateway to Waipio Valley. The town of Honokaa has restaurants, groceries, a bank, a post office and a theater that shows both movies and has live entertainment. We are located right next to the Hawaii Vanilla Company and tours and luncheons are available are certain days.
  • One of the best Airbnb homes I stayed in. The host is outstanding and the house is spacious, very well equipped and clean. Kitchen is well equipped for significant cooking. We cooked, grilled and BBQed around the clock. The place is quiet and secluded. Yet, it is located just 25 minutes from Waimea where there is everything you need.

This large beautiful single family home is just a 10 minute walk to Kalopa State Park, 10 minute drive to Honoka'a town, and 20 minutes to Waimea. The house is up in the mountain on one acre of land. Experience the beauty of the Hamakua Coast as this location is perfect for any adventure. Honokaa is a quiet town and situated between Hilo and Kona. If you are looking for serenity this is the one for you. If you want night life and busy action might want to keep looking.
Your private bedroom is on the opposite side of the house. On your side you have 1.5 bathrooms and a second bedroom with a full size futon. You also have private access to the lanai where you can enjoy your morning coffee or tea. My internet can be slow at times. Should be okay for basic emailing and social media but you may experience problems if you want to video chat or watch a movie on your own device.
I am about 1/2 mile from Kalopa State park and a 12 minute drive to Honokaa town. My home is for travelers who want to get away from the city and enjoy some peace and quiet.
  • Wunderschönes, großes Haus in malerischer Idylle. 2 Badezimmern. Wirklich sehr zu empfehlen!!!

  • Tammie has a beautiful home in a lovely location. We so enjoyed having Kalopa State Park close by where we could meet Hawaiians and hike in a native, ancient forest.

  • This is a Beautiful Home with an exceptional Host! Thank you Tammie for sharing it with us! Would stay here again in a heartbeat! April

    April2018-04-20T00:00:00Z
  • Tammie’s home is a super comfortable space, immaculately clean and very well equipped. Brilliant peaceful location and less than a 10 minute drive from Honokaa, a quaint town very near to a good supermarket, individual shops, eateries and even a small cinema! Plenty of beautiful coastal walks for hiking. Recommend very highly and likely to stay again on my next visit to The Big Island!

    Karen2018-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the location of Tammie’s place; at 1500 feet above sea level on the Hamakua coast, the air is cool and sparkling clear (no vog) and there’s a distant view of the ocean through the lush mature trees. Lots of birdsong and frogsong, but little road noise. We were there in the wet season (April) and it was alternately rainy and clear; in a drier month it would be glorious. Tammie’s place is new, roomy and comfortable. We usually miss our dogs when we travel, but Tammie’s dog kept us company and we became fast friends. Tammie is warm, welcoming and knowledgeable and we felt quite at home.

    Sally2018-04-16T00:00:00Z
  • Tammie’s place is very clean and nicely decorated. She is an amazing host and very sweet. The cherry on top is her wonderful pets! The property is amazing and it was so nice to enjoy fresh picked fruits during our stay.

    Leihua2018-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • We loved it. Tammie was a wonderful host. Our son loved playing with the dog and the cat. Both are small and very friendly. Ideal location to roam the whole Northern and Eastern Seaboard of the Big Island. Many interesting locations are close by Honokaa (10 mi), Waipio 20 min, Waimea (30 min), Hilo (60 min). Go and have dinner at the Italian place in Honokaa it has great Live Music particularly Fridays.

    Kai2017-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Tammie is a great host. Very welcoming, uncomplicated and friendly. The house is beautiful with a big and nice garden. You can even see the ocean in the distance. The two rooms were very comfortable and it was clean. You have a lot of privacy and even 1,5 bathrooms! The house is not very central though and you have to bring a car and drive a bit around for visiting the Big Island - but yes, it is big! We would like to come back and can defenitely recommend it!

  • Mai is great and very responsive. My family and I traveled to Honokaa to do some house hunting and had a wonderful stay there.

  • We had an enjoyable stay in this apartment. There is a small kitchenette and large master bedroom and reasonable sized second bedroom. Wifi was provided too. Close to Waimea and Honokaa (which both have good restaurants).

Zen Studio in the bamboo rainforest, 10 mins from town & 20 mins to Waipio valley the 2nd most visited spot on Island. Free wifi, cable, private parking & keyless 24 hrs entry. The house is custom built with an asian zen style with bamboo floors, walk in closet, spacious ensuite with walk in shower and double granite vanity. And Zen Japanese garden courtyard. Big Island is big and it's nice to stay on the north side so you can explore either side of the island!
This studio is spacious, with king bed, spacious bathroom with double vanity and large shower with walk in closet. With new zen furniture the space is great for inspiration, rejuvenation and to be with nature. Also living seating areas for reading. The main house is split into two private separate rentals. The Studio has it's entrance on the right side with own path and patio. There's a small out side porch great to be with nature and a small kitchenette with mini fridge, toaster oven, microwave, small convention burner with a pot and pan, dishes, and utensils. Great seating area with windows with view of the historic forest and bamboo. You will see all kinds of wild life! Lance Armstrong tweeted the main road where the property is on it's his top 5 roads in the world to bike on. We have bike tours here, a very special place. We often have celebrities, and vip guest comes stay on retreat to write their book, or to be with nature. The only draw back are that Hawaii homes the walls do not have insulation because it doesn't get that cold and the walls are thin and you can hear a little through them like hotels. However you are getting a one of kind house for half the price you will pay for a hotel and you get to experience a custom built zen house. Please be mindful of the quite hrs from 9pm-9am to ensure a great stay for every guest. Even though the main house is divided into two private rentals, if you wanted to rent the whole house we can open it up and also ofter the other 2 bedroom retreat next door for special events. We have our property manager on property in a separate house across the courtyard incase you need any assistance.
Is a quiet safe neighborhood, there's coffee farms, vanilla farms just walking distance. Great walks just go left when you leave the driveway on Kahana drive!
  • Beautiful home surrounded by nature. Honokaa is super cute with boutique shops and yummy restaurants downtown. The staff was friendly and gave us great recommendations. Mai is friendly and quick to respond. My only complaint is waking up to the the dog on property barking at 3-4 am all three nights we stayed there.

    Suzy2018-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • For the most part, we did enjoy our stay at the studio. Although, we were expecting a much more private experience. The bed was comfortable, shower was clean and the mini fridge was helpful. There is some small appliances in the apartment like a toaster oven and a microwave, but there are no pots or pans, cups or bowls, plates, utensils, etc. They did leave us with a small pack of paper plates and plastic cutlery which sort of helped, but was not what we were expecting, especially given the pictures of pots and pans in the listing. Our biggest issue was the studio shares a very thin wall (actually a window) with the neighboring AirBnB apartment and noises are not kept separate even in the slightest. You can hear every breath, tooth brush, snore or cough of the residents next door. There is also a very friendly dog that continually barks throughout the day and night at any slightest movement or at any of the dogs barking in the distance. Which was not very peaceful or relaxing. Although Mai is very sweet and did her best to accommodate us and help with our needs, I think listing this as a 'retreat' is a bit of a misrepresentation. It would be perfect for anyone or for couples who don't plan to spend anytime in the apartment. We also felt rushed for our checkout at 9am, 2 hours early so that the caretakers could saw down bamboo that surrounds the property.

  • Thank you, Mai for being accommodating and sharing with us your beautiful studio. It was more than what we have expected.

    Ivie2018-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Incredibly beautiful spot. Very serene and private. A little out of the way, but of course that adds to it. Would definitely stay at Zen Studio again.

Welcome to Hale Luana, the house of comfort and relaxation. This grand home is so comfortable you will not want to leave. Located just south of famed Honoka'a on the historic Hamakua Coast and close to Waipio Valley, Waimea, waterfalls, quaint shopping spots and ocean adventure areas. Please note: all rates apply to 2 guests. Additional guests are $40 per night plus taxes. Maximum occupancy is 10 guests. Our on-site caretaker is available for guests who would like a greeting and orientation to the estate and is readily available (but completely out of site and sound) to assist you during your stay. Parents please be aware that the property is not safe for walking babies, toddlers or small children because of many unprotected stairs, high-end and breakable decor. We welcome older children and infants (equipment is provided including a port-a-crib, high chair, pack'n'play and infant gym). As you enter the 2.5 acre property through the palm lined driveway, you'll know you've found your 'home away from home'. Walk up the wide front stairs and pause on the front lanai to enjoy the expansive lawn and garden views. Then step inside and be greeted by the grand, open living spaces. The living room, dining area and kitchen are all open with a high, vaulted ceiling and wide sliding doors that open onto the huge lanai with an ocean view. Trade breezes flow through the plantation style house daily. Our favorite spot is the 600 square foot back lanai where you can gaze upon the ocean, dine on the teak table with seating for 6 or walk down to the hot tub on the deck below. The kitchen is stocked with everything you'll need for cooking 'today's catch' or farmer's market produce. The living room has plenty of comfortable seating for your group, a flat screen TV, stereo and music library. Additional to the outside dining is the inside dining with another long table and seating for 10. Just off the kitchen is a large reading room with 4 comfy chairs and ottomans and a full library to indulge in. While the living spaces of the house are all open concept, the 4 bedrooms are each contained in one of the four corners of the house for utmost privacy. Both the Master Bedroom and Bedroom 2 have king size beds, en-suite bathroom, flat screen TV and access to the back lanai through French doors that are screened in case you want to sleep with the doors open and the breezes and sounds of nature. The Master Suite also includes walk-in closets. The Master Bathroom is elegantly designed with walk-in marble shower with 2 shower heads and marble bench as well as a soaking tub, a separate WC and double vanity sinks. Bedrooms 3 and 4 share a luxurious bathroom complete with marble tile and a bathtub with a shower. Bedroom 3 has a king size bed and flat screen TV and Bedroom 4 has a queen size bed and lovely garden views. Each of the 4 bedrooms is finished with high quality linens, elegant touches, ceiling fan and view of either the ocean or gardens. There is additional sleeping on a single pull-out bed in the living room and a couch with a firm, down cushion long enough for a small adult to comfortably sleep. Hale Luana is the complete gathering spot vacation rental. With plenty of room for each guest to spread out inside or out, a large hot tub and 600 square foot ocean view lanai. This is a place you'll come back to year after year....start your experience now! A/C Notes: No AC Special Terms: There is a caretaker on site. Ahu Lani in Hawaiian is Temple in the Heavens. At Ahu Lani Sanctuary, you can enjoy ocean and mountain views and the quiet peace of being nestled within a private 24 acre native Hawaiian Ohia and Koa forest. This off-grid 9,000 square-foot facility has 10 bedrooms and 5 baths. A wrap-around Lani makes for great gathering spaces to enjoy meals, relax and read, nap, and hang out with the friends/family. Enjoy yoga, meditation, and more in the 30 foot round room or out on the land with the trees.
If you desire a peaceful place to relax and live the Aloha spirit, Ahu Lani Sanctuary is perfect. At the end of the road, enjoy trees and birds for neighbors and the breeze as your companion throughout the day. At 3,000 feet of elevation the temperature is cooler but pleasant with mid to high 80s during the day and high 60s at night. Another perk of this elevation is the lack of bugs and mosquitoes. Enjoy some of the clearest night skies in the world! Once you arrive at Ahu Lani you won't want to go anywhere, but if you do desire some Big Island adventures, Waipio Valley is only 13 miles away, down through Historic Honoka'a Town. Ahu Lani is adjacent to the Kalopa Forest Reserve which has great hiking trails for exploring. Hapuna (one of the nicest beaches on all of the islands and arguably the world) is only 30 miles away through Waimea. Get to Volcano in an hour and change and explore the Hamakua coast and the plentiful waterfalls only minutes away. This land is sacred and will take your breath away. The 30-foot round room is ready for yoga, mediation, dance, and group gatherings. Go for a walk among the native Hawaiian Ohia and Koa trees and get lost in time. You won't want to leave!
Our closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away, Ahu Lani is at the end of the road at 3,000 feet elevation and is surrounded by native forest conservation land. Due to the elevation and colder temperatures we do not have Koki frogs and the mosquitoes aren't as thick as lower elevations. Nights can get into the high 50s and daytime temps can reach 90s. Rain and sunshine trade places throughout the day, which makes for rainbows and amazing cloud displays. Catering, yoga instruction, vehicle rentals, and massage services are also available.
  • Can't say enough about Kaia & Garrett's amazing hospitality and even more amazing home & massive land. It is indeed a magical, sacred sanctuary and we feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to spend our first time on the Big Island there. Kaia is a true angel- helping out so much before, during and even after our stay. Being that this place is off-grid, I had a ton of questions when planning for my group of 19 people- and Kaia made herself available every step of the way. Our 8 day stay there was, as Kaia would say, "GLORIOUS!" From the amazing forests, plants, nature, ANIMALS, views, balcony- I could go on & on! It was all so special.s a very calming, peaceful, energy at Ahu Lani that we all fell in love with! We look forward to coming back again in the future. Also, big thanks to the amazing chef Alea & most awesome driver Desi. ALOHA!

  • This place is very special. If your main desire is to connect with nature, this is a perfect spot. The land is magical. I brought a group of 10 for a yoga/energy healing retreat and it was perfect for our needs. We had several nature meditation days that were so nurturing and wonderful. Garret was a wonderful host. He was kind, helpful, and also alot of fun. I hope to bring another group in the spring.

  • A wonderfully magic and open space! You can tell just how much love goes into this home, its a sanctuary to the souls who tent to the land and take care of it. So thankful to have been able to experience this wild piece of Hawaii ♥️

  • This place is magic. Garrett made himself available as unexpected needa came up. The hospitality was wonderful. They went so far as to bring a hoarde of 7 children to feed the farm animals and ride their horses. I highly recommend this space for a retreat

  • My (Hidden by Airbnb) team rented this amazing off the grid place for four days. We enjoyed the serene and lush environment. The beautiful yoga/meditation room, to which we invited Maty Ezraty a great yoga teacher. The tasty food that Garrett made (for an extra cost). The bit of off roading (in our rental jeep) required to get to the location. I highly recommend this rental for groups looking to bond by skirting traditional rentals and going off the beaten path.

2 bedrooms are in a private wing of the house with their own bath. This is an amazing old Hawaii Plantation Managers Hall, with 12 foot ceilings throughout. Huge 47' lanai with tradewinds, sun deck, incredible ocean views. Lush tropical landscaping. My guests tell me they like the "old Hawaii" or "the real Hawaii" that my home offers. Located just off the highway, yet a world away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts. Just a few miles from beautiful Waipio Valley, home to the Kings.
Experience old Hawaii in this large plantation home. You have 2 bedrooms in your own "wing" of the house, with its' own bath, close the door to that wing for privacy. There is also a 3rd bedroom for rent, sharing the same bath as the other 2 bedrooms. Paauhau is called the "Land of Sunshine" but it is on the lush east shore, and the Tradewinds provide a wonderful breeze. In winter, whales can be seen from the large lanai. This home was built in 1920, and it has all the charm of that era, 12 foot ceilings, large rooms, a huge covered lanai (porch). Located 2 miles from Honokaa, where you have restaurants, shopping, hospital, grocery, banks, theater, and much more. But, no nightlife this side, this is for those who like peace and tranquility- with an amazing view.
This is "old Hawaii" a former sugar cane camp, this was the social hall for the managers. Very few tourists venture here. Neighborhood is mostly local families who have been here for generations. Very safe.
  • We reserved the Plantation but in the end due to unexpected guests there, Pauhaa Investments upgraded us to another property which far exceeded our needs and in addition had a superb ocean view and wonderful gardens. It was well equipped and furnished and had very welcome laundry facilities. (www.airbnb.com/rooms/ (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) ) Galen was most helpful in his communications, gave great directions and responded promptly to queries.

  • My son and I arrived to a great welcome. We enjoyed cocktails with the host and a grand view of the Pcific from his very comfortable lanai. During the week we came and went as we pleased. Galen was a treasure trove of info on local restaurants and other attractions. His hospitality was unmatched by other venues I have used. I would highly recommend his home to anyone. I will return in the future knowing that my choice is the best!!

  • This home is in a very historic and interesting part of the Big Island and we were fully prepared for that, for us it was a plus as we had not explored that area in depth on prior trips. If one is looking for interesting restaurants and shopping it is not in the immediate area.

    Laura2018-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful home with unique history. Gaylene was a kind host and Archie was a delight to be around. Highly recommend.

    Celeste2017-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • We chose this property for our base to visit the attractions on the Hamakua Coast. Everything was perfect! What a spot. After two days we decided to make this our "home base" for our entire trip next time we visit the Big Island. Galen was most gracious and provided us with a wealth of knowledge regarding what to see and what to avoid for our day trips. The home is a jewel. High ceilings, a private wing for bathing and sleeping, beautiful kitchen/dining setup and the lanai. Sitting on the lanai with a cold beverage and marveling at the view we had all to ourselves made us want to make this "our spot". Pictures do not do it justice. The warmth and charm of this true plantation style home are matched by Galen's knowledge and enthusiasm for Hawaii's land and culture. Mahalo

  • We loved staying here. The property is gorgeous, with beautiful gardens, a refreshing pool, and amazing views. It is very close to Honokaa, yet feels to be way out in the country. The picturesque Waipio Valley is just a few miles away. But we found ourselves spending whole days just hanging out on the lanai staring at the ocean. Owner Galen and his dog Archie are wonderful hosts who made us feel right at home. We hope to return someday soon!

  • After a few days on the Kona side of the island, we escaped to the quieter life of Honokaa, and stayed at the Hamakua Coast Plantation. Excellent choice, as it turned out. Host Galen was fabulously welcoming and helpful, and we much enjoyed the conversation on the expansive lanai. The recently renovated bathroom with semi-outdoor shower/tub was so beautiful we kind of wanted to spend all our time just in there. The location has a bit of a distant ocean view over the back hedge, and while outside of Honokaa the downtown is probably less than a 5-minute drive away. Beautiful home, awesome host, highly recommended.

Take solace in the first bedroom's cozy king bed for a good night's rest while others sleep soundly in the second bedroom. Additional sleeping can be found using the queen daybed in the living room, or by using one of the twin air mattresses.
This home is located at the edge of the Hamakua Forest Reserve and Kalopa State Recreation Area, so you can easily delve into the breathtaking nature of the island! Spend the day exploring the various trails brimming with tropical flowers and towering canopies. The Waipio Valley is only a short 30-minute drive away with a lookout of the coast that you have to see to believe. While you're in the area, be sure to stop by the breathtaking Waipi'o Black Sand Beach North! Many more beaches are accessible within an hours drive. To discover more of the area, head south to Akaka Falls State Park. If you're in the mood for an adventure, there are several guides nearby offering ATV, jeep, and ziplining tours! Hilo is also a quick drive down the coast with helicopter tours, the Mauna Loa Observatory, and Liliuokalani Gardens.

Private Bedroom on the Main strip of Historic Honokaa town! Just 1 mins walk to town with shops & restaurants! 10 mins to Waipio Valley with black sand beaches & Waterfalls, the 2nd most visited spot on island! This 3 bedroom Hawaiian Style Plantation house is newly renovated. There's a historic koi pond in the courtyard and outside hallway that leads to 2 shared bathrooms & Full Kitchen! Free wifi and smart TV! We are north central so it's great for going either side to Hilo or Kona & Waipio!
We are north so we do not get any VOG and is safe from the volcanic activity. We have many people evacuating to this area it has the best air quality all year round. The Volcano room is our smallest room, what's nice is it has windows all around, it's good if it's just one person, but we have had couples in there because they wanted to save money. This is the only room without a ceiling fan, however we have a portable small fan, depends when you stay if it's during the winter months you won't need a fan cause it's pretty cool at night. If you want a bigger space the Master bedroom is large or Hamakua room is med size, our Mauna Kea room has it's own entrance and Waipio Studio is largest with it's own kitchenette. We have had many guests stay in this room and didn't mind because they are out most of the day and would prefer to save the money.
It's in the Historic town of Honokaa, you get to enjoy walking to town, to farmers markets, shops, restaurants, historic theatre for only $6, free public pools, skate park, libary next door. My Shave ice and boba tea shop in front!
  • We had a great stay at Mai's. The place was quiet, clean, well equipped and nicely located in Honaka'a, a historic little town close to the Waipi'o valley and the city of Waimea. Thank you!

  • Cozy little room, but not exactly what we had expected. It's more of a bunkhouse than a townhouse, as the listing describes, and was very teeny tiny. We also had no towels and no fan so it got hot and sticky for us pretty quickly. Mai was quick with responses, however, and the house is located in a lovely part of town, easy to get to lots of places and very scenic.

  • First off, if you are looking for a place that allows easy access to both sides of the island then Honoka'a is the perfect place, and Mai's place is clean and reasonably priced place to stay if you don't mind communal living. Every guest was polite and respectful of space and noise. The kitchen is well stocked for utensils and cookware. So overall an easy place to cook food for yourself if you are not wanting to go out to eat or have a simple meal on the premises. My only feedback was that there is no hooks in bedroom #3 for hanging up towels, swimsuits, clothes etc so wouldn't recommend that particularly room. I did give this feedback to Mai and believe she is going to work on it. The other rooms did have closets and places to hang up stuff. When Mai was on the premises, she checked in with personally and asked how things were going, and let me know if I needed anything to reach out to her. I would stay here again if in Honoka'a!

  • She was very responsive and friendly. We liked the location even though arriving there at first was a bit of a drag since the drive from airport to there was about an hour. But honestly after that the location was perfect because it was in the middle of the island and was able to get to other places in shorter time than if we would have stayed in Kona. The oranges from their trees were very sweet and it was nice that they shared with us. Great host. Thank you

  • Convenient location :)

    Kayla2018-05-14T00:00:00Z
  • Pros - Easy check in - In town - Clean, new furnishing Cons - Slow internet - Firm futon bed - Not very personal experience, commercial AirBnB setup

  • Overall it was convenient and very affordable. I liked the private parking and kitchen idea a lot. Thank you host and her Uncle a lot.

  • Worth every penny! Didn’t know what to expect with shared housing but our house mates were really chill. Great peaceful location and super quiet too. The house had a lot of charm and is well managed for its age. Will stay again for sure!

Private Hawaiian plantation style Private bedroom is in a Historic building on the main strip of Historic Honokaa Town. Only a 1 min walk to town with restaurants, pub, shops and grocery stores and markets. Free Wifi, smart TV, and free parking. The bedroom has a keyless entry for self check in. The house is north making it easy to travel to either side of the island to Kona or Hilo. Plus Waipio Valley is only 10 mins away with black sand beaches & waterfalls! It's the 2nd most visited post.
We are north so we do not get any VOG and is safe from the volcanic activity. We have many people evacuating to this area it has the best air quality all year round. The Hawaiin complex has a total of 5 bedrooms. They all are private with a keyless lock so you can check in at your convenience from 3pm-9pm, all you need is a code to get in. The Hamakua private room labeled #1 room, is in located in the 3 bedroom house section of the Hawaiian Complex, you punch in the code and the key will be hanging by the bedroom door for added security. The house has a 48 inch TV in the shared living room and seating area. When you walk out your room there's the shared living room then out of the house you have an outside open air walk way outside about 5 steps with koi pond and garden connecting to the 2 shared bathrooms, shared full kitchen with stove oven, coffeemaker, pots pans dishes etc. The walls are thin so if you are a light sleeper I recommend the Mauna kea Room which has it’s own direct entrance to room or the Waipio on the opposite end of the complex and direct entrance to room. The outside walk way is designed for good energy and feng shui plus it's away from the sleeping area making it's more quiet. You get to enjoy the original historic plantation style home, truly one of a kind. This is the reason why I fell in love with the property, you don't get to experience these style of home anymore. There are tables and lounge chair for sun tanning right next to the bananas and coconut trees. On property there's also Mac nuts trees, tangerines, soursop and lychee, you get to really experience Hawaii! Please park at the guest parking, or side of the house, there's also free parking on the street! This room is med sized, most guest love this room because it's cheaper and half the price of a hotel. Plus most of the time guests are out sight seeing and would rather save the money. If you want a larger room try our Master bedroom, Mauna Kea Room, or Waipio Studio in the same complex they have their own entrance. Please take a look at our photos so you are clear on what you are booking. I also have my uncle living on property if you have any questions. Please make sure you know what room you booked when you check in. We are also next to the police and fire station, maybe once every 4 months they might have a call where you hear their intercom at night, however you will feel extra safe with them next door. There are tables and lounge chair for sun tanning right next to the bananas and coconut trees. On property also has Mac nuts, tangerines, soursop and lychee, you get to really experience Hawaii! Please park at the 2guest parking in back, or 2 side of the house, there's also free parking on the street! To ensure everyone enjoys their stay please be mindful of the quite hrs 9pm-9am. This is a one of kind Hawaiian house you get to experience a piece of history. Mahalo.

  • Mai’s place was wonderful - all the old plantation house charm with modern touches and very importantly to me - for work - a great wifi signal. She has fruit trees growing on the property and her uncle and partner were kind enough to help me get some fresh oranges - so delicious! She had wonderful suggestions on where to eat - my favorites were Grandma’s Kitchen and the Waipi’o Cookhouse. Would definitely like to stay there again.

  • Wonderful place for travelers to stay while visiting the Waipio Coast! Everything you need in an Airbnb and more with a kitchen to store and cook food! And a lovely and sweet host:)

    Sophia2018-04-21T00:00:00Z
  • I had stayed in two separate rentals of Mai's, within the same location. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and ambience. The room, itself, was simple, clean, comfortable. Access to a communal kitchen (stocked), bathroom and living room were nice added features. As for location, just walk out the door and the main street of Honokaa was right there for the tasting! Overall, all good.

  • Mai's place is beautiful and an incredible value. Cozy, clean and perfect location to explore the Hamakua coast to include Waimea which is a quick 20 min drive. I would recommend booking if you are looking for a perfect, safe home base! Thanks Mai

  • Classic Hawaii. Our room was upper level in a Historic building. It is very simple with firm bed and fan. It has shared bathrooms and large shared kitchen. I you don't mind shared amenities this is a place you could settle in for a while, cook, relax and see Hawaii without breaking the bank.

  • We stayed 3 nights at Mai's and it was perfect. The room is basic but we actually didn't need more than a bed for our trip. The kitchen is fully stocked and fairly big. We loved Honokaa, very cute and authentic town. Go to the theater, it's a nice experience! Mahalo Mai!

  • We stayed here 5 nights and after our long days out, we always looked forward coming back to Mai's place. Clean, cozy, quiet, and charming. Nestled in the old historic town of Honokaa, a quick drive to beautiful Waimea town and not too far from some of the best beaches on island, her place is in a really great location to cruise to all points of interest. 2 shared bathrooms that are kept very clean, hot showers, a full kitchen and a nice koi pond/garden to sit next to, to reflect upon your day. Uncle Jimmy lives there and is a very nice man who can be of help if needed. We will definitely book again at Mai's place. Mahalo for a great stay Mai!

  • Super situated accommodation, just a few minutes drive from the famous Waipio Valley with its black beach. You should definitely try Mai's Shave Ice shop on the street side. There is also a nice pub up the street with frequently live music in the evening.

1300 sq/ft 1 bed house with en suite bathroom. A quite peaceful retreat to rejuvenate in nature, away from city, yet only 10 mins to Historic Honokaa town. The house is central north so you can go to Waipio valley 20 mins and to Kona or Hilo either side of the island. Plus it's on the famous Old Mamalahoa road which Lance Armstrong wrote that "It's his top 5 roads to bike on in the world"! Experience nature, Hawaii bamboo and forest! A one of a kind place and custom built house with en suite.
We are north so we do not get any VOG and is safe from the volcanic activity. We have many people evacuating to this area it has the best air quality all year round. The space is very special it has antique mid century cabinets and the house is furnished with many asian antiques even the entrance is a large buddha for good energy! You will have the best sleep as the temperature is cooler at night and you get to hear the wild birds and animals at night! Bedroom with en suite with view of the zen courtyard. My favorite place to come write my vision and rejuvenate. We often have celebrities, and vip guest comes stay on retreat to write their book, or to be with nature. Please be mindful of the quite hrs from 9pm-9am to ensure a great stay for every guest. The Main house is split into two private rentals with own entrance, if you would like to book the whole place we offer the whole retreat plus another separate 2 bedroom house next door! The only draw back are that Hawaii homes the walls do not have insulation because it doesn't get that cold and the walls are thin and you can hear a little through them like hotels. However you are getting a one of kind house for half the price you will pay for a hotel and you get to experience a custom built zen house. Our cleaning lady lives on property also in a separate house next door if you have questions and she is there if you any assistance! We have a yard dog that is in a gated area all you have to say is hi Luna and instantly she will whine and know you are a friend! You will fall in love with the house!
My place is so quiet in the forest yet only 10 mins to town to restaurants, theatre, pool, pub, groceries, markets, cafe, golfing and shops. Please check out my Shave Ice shop and my CreaProducts studio that was on Shark Tank Season 7 episode 27!
  • Mai's place is just as it looks on the posting. It is large and beautiful with a well-equipped kitchen and really good Wifi. There are also helpful instructions around the house! There is another studio BnB attached at the back of the house so the driveway is shared. Four of us stayed in the main house and enjoyed our stay - cooking in the kitchen, playing with Luna the dog and playing board games. Mai is great at communication, she is speedy and friendly. However, there is no reception at the house (really is a zen retreat!). There are no cooking supplies (oil, salt, pepper, etc.) so if you are planning on cooking you will need to bring these items. I'd seen on other posts that Mai's place is cold - I did not experience this and if I did the house has a space heater, a fireplace and a lot of fluffy blankets! Thank you Mai for an amazing place!

    Emma2018-04-11T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Zen House was a wonderful travel experience. Mai is very hospitable, the communication with her was always excellent. The location in the tropical forest is stunning and gives a good possibility to relax. The house is exactly as depicted: the living room is large and comfortable, the kitchen is well-equipped, the design is very harmonious. Zen House is well-maintained and quiet. The neighbours are very friendly and also helpful. One day we went fishing and the neighbour gave us all the necessary equipment and shared with us his experience. The dog Luna is very cute. We enjoyed our whole stay in Mai's house and would anytime go there again.

  • Mai’s place “Zen House” was much better than we expected. Very nicely furnished , even had a mortar and pestle my wife is thai and she uses these to pound chili for thai cooking. Yes I must admit we are easily amused but this was big for us! The location up on the mountain is a magical location makes you feel what it is like to really live on the Hamakua coast, very preaceful but not to far from some local grocery shopping. Lot’s of positive energy here! Luna the dog on the property was very well mannered. Friendly & quite. We are dog people so we loved playing a bit. The caretakers were friendly and helpful and definitly gave us our space also We hope to come again soon Mike & Emorn
