The Willow Treehouse is settled among the trees, overlooking a small, swimmable pond, on a wooded property 15min away from the town of Woodstock. It is cozy, yet has all you need to cook dinner, enjoy reading, chilling, or swimming. Separate spaces for chilling, writing a novel or enjoying the view. The sleeping loft is accessible by a ladder, and you would have to walk in with your luggage, so pack lightly. It is perfect for couples and solo adventurers.
Designed by Antony Gibbon and built by William Johnson the Treehouse is a passion project that came to life.
  • Staying at the treehouse is a wonderfully unique experience all in itself but you are also a short drive from Woodstock and countless hiking trails which makes this a perfect rental. I wish we had a few more days, we will be back!

    Don2016-11-21T00:00:00Z
  • The treehouse is absolutely perfect and everything we wanted. Secluded, quiet, with beautiful scenery. The design of both the interior and exterior is well thought out and very special. We had fun heating the hot tub with wood fire. I'd recommend coming prepared with groceries from Woodstock and not leaving the property for a true detox.

    Cem2016-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing experience! Avner was extremely helpful in making sure all of our questions were answered in a timely matter. The house is a once in a lifetime experience. Such silence yet so much beauty. A great place to contemplate and connect. Grateful for allowing us to stay.

    Bailee2017-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • There's really no way to describe that first walk down the road to the tree house. Seeing this thing in person is fantastic. It's was a great stay, easy to get to, close enough to civilization, but not too close. The tree house was clean, really cozy and perfect for a quick get away. The amenities are great and your basics for cooking, making coffee, etc are all there. Can't wait to go back!

    Kristor2017-04-23T00:00:00Z
  • The setting was tremendous -- deers lounging by the water hole, etc. Would definitely rent again. No brainer.

    Malia2016-11-08T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely and isolated -- was just what we were looking for. However be sure to ask any questions before you get there, as there is NO cellular once you get outside of Woodstock, and we had to drive back into town to be able to text our host with questions on the basics.

    Kelly2017-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Another amazing review by another satisfied costumer. If you are deciding between the Willow Treehouse and other options, come to the Treehouse first and save the others for another time. Trust me.

    Daniel2018-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • This place is truly one of a kind. The space is so beautiful and definitely made with love. If you are looking for a unique place to stay - you've found it! The treehouse is nestled in the woods where you have a view of the lake. The place has amazing light because of the many windows and making a fire to keep the place warm is so enjoyable. The hot tub which is warmed up by blazing your own firewood is incredible. Can't wait to visit again!

Well behaved dogs welcome for additional $25 per night per pet (please contact Kerry before making a booking if you are a pet owner). The courtyard is fenced off so it may be possible to let dogs outside off leash. Phoenicia is Old World Americana- a hidden gem of a town on the verge of rediscovery. Nestled between the foothills of Mt Tremper and the Esopus Creek, this little town is something special!
  • Kerry's Cottage was the perfect weekend retreat for my boyfriend and me. We were both in need of some peaceful relaxation, and we definitely got it here. I have stayed in Woodstock many times, but really loved Phoenicia. The cottage is in the best location to walk right into downtown, but it feels very private, especially when we enjoyed the hot tub and the fire pit, which make this place the BEST. We will definitely be back again. This is probably my favorite place I have stayed on AirBnB.

    Sarah2015-11-22T00:00:00Z
  • Such a beautiful place! Really enjoyed the hiking nearby and the food at Tavern 24 and the pancake spot were delicious and so close by ! Would love to come back and already planning the next getaway.

  • Great place, useful communications, amazing skylights and hot tub! Recommended!

    Sam2014-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Very accommodating host. Best possible location if you want to be in walking distance of all that the little town of Phoenicia has to offer. Hot tub was super nice, Netflix also a plus.

    Lauren2017-04-17T00:00:00Z
  • If you're looking for a getaway with your significant other, this is the place to go. Although I had no phone service and the wifi was spotty, I'd still come back. I went on a weekday so we didn't get to do activities such as snow tubing as they are only open on weekends. We went to Brios restaurant for lunch and had a really good slice of pizza. It was nice to have a grill and fire pit in the cottage. Added bonus: jacuzzi. This was my favorite part. There were enough towels provided for us and the place was super clean. Kerry also replied back to my text messages that I sent through wifi right away!

    Salma2017-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place is perfect for a getaway either only for a weekend or longer. I was here with my husband for our wedding anniversary and we loved the cottage. We had complete privacy. The house is situated right in downtown so we could simply walk to all the restaurants, shops etc. The hot-tub was already warm when we came so we enjoyed that as well. Since it was winter and very cold we couldnt go for trekking but we will definitely plan another trip so that we can explore the area.

    Kapisha2014-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second time staying here and we'd certainly come back for a third! The cottage was just as cute and clean and enjoyable as we remembered! We love the privacy of the fenced in yard and it was the perfect weekend to relax on the hammock and take a dip in the hot tub. Kerry is super professional and we love renting from him. Perhaps we'll check out some of his other properties as well!

Our beloved local poet is a candidate at every presidential election. Most of our friends think Phoenicia has a vibe that’s cooler than Woodstock. We keep the location of swimming holes secret until we’re sure you will respect our pristine waters. Farm-to-table foodies will be in good company. The first ski area in the state of NY was located just down the street from us . Birding is exceptional. Hummingbirds visit us in the summer. We are located less than a mile from Main Street Phoenicia.
  • We had such a wonderful time staying at the cottage. It was the perfect location for an affordable and relaxing getaway, with evenings spent cooking in the kitchen and lounging by the fire pit. Next time we come, we'll know we can save even more money and prep time by buying all of the wonderful produce at the local 24-hour farm stand! We are really looking forward to staying at James and Alma's place again!!!

    Emily2013-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • I'm hesitant to rave here too much or it will be impossible to book this place again in the future! Suffice it to say, coming back to the cottage after a cold day of snowboarding was truly rapturous. This was my husband's birthday weekend and it couldn't have been better. Super clean, comfy, and well-decorated, we had a great time here and will certainly be back!

    Daneka2013-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing space and most gracious hosts. You can hear the Esopus at night... wonderful.

    Samantha2014-06-10T00:00:00Z
  • Alma and James provided a lovely getaway and the fudge was the icing on the cake. I hope to stay with them again.

    Crystal & Rory2014-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay at Esopus cottage. The cottage itself is perfect: immaculately clean, cozy and well heated (especially enjoyed the heat lamp in the bathroom). The location couldn't be better-right off route 28, a minute from Main St. and the Phoenecia Diner, our favorite breakfast spot. It's also a stone's throw to several trails, scenic drives and activities. James and Alma kept in communication even as we were caught in a snowstorm on the way up from nyc, and were extremely welcoming and helpful when we arrived. We were so lucky to find this gem in the Catskills and look forward to another trip.

    Marie2015-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second time staying at the Esopus Cottage and once again it was great. Everything is very clean and stocked with the essentials, easy parking and close proximity to everything in the area we want to do. Check in and check out was easy. Will continue to stay here when we visit again!

    Steph2016-04-25T00:00:00Z
  • James and Elmo were wonderful! We really loved our time in Phoenicia, and loved being away from Brooklyn for just a little while. The house is cozy and warm and lovely. When James found out that we were there for our anniversary, they gave us a bottle of wine. Totally wonderful host!

    John Jacob2013-12-18T00:00:00Z
  • James and Alma were great hosts. Very accommodating, caring and kind. The cottage was lovely and comfortable. It has everything we needed from great kitchen appliances, sound system and internet. And Phoenicia was the perfect place for a relaxing long weekend.

    Dörte2015-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • Alma and James made us feel very welcome, cute neighborhood. it's a brand new or recently renovated space, very bright and airy inside. Everything's new and they've thought of lots of details, asked us to help them think of other needed changes.

  • Great stay! Making a bonfire was a fun surprise

    Tsipi2017-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at the Zen Cottage. Though we did not get the chance to meet Alma & James in person, they were very accommodating hosts. It was easy to access the apartment and they provided helpful information about where to go in the area. Most importantly, the cottage was a welcoming and cozy place to stay. We enjoyed cooking in the open kitchen and sitting by the fire. It was easy to explore the area, but the spacious, clean, and cozy cottage made it so that we never wanted to leave! It was perfect for our short weekend away. We would definitely recommend staying here and hope to come back again!

    Alyssa2017-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Great house, very stocked and comfortable. Great place, so beautiful. Great host! Alma was very helpful and welcoming. We would stay at the zen cottage again in a heartbeat.

    Garrett2017-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • Alma & James were very friendly and helpful with check-in and provided a great list of local hikes, breweries and restaurants. The Zen Cottage was very clean and cozy, and the falling snow and warm fire place was magical. It was pretty cold outside so we didn't get to take advantage of the Pony Bar or fire pit, but we'd love to return in warmer months. Would definitely recommend!

    Hannah2018-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • Alma and James have built a lovely cottage just outside Phoenicia. The space is clean and neat, with a lovely upstairs loft bedroom. Best of all is the beautiful outdoor space, with hammock, fire pit, grill and even a vegetable and herb garden you can use. Alma and James are always on point, and very helpful with suggestions for the area. The one thing to know is that the cottage is right next to a number of houses, including theirs, but that wasn't an issue for us! Great place for the Catskills.

    Siobhan2017-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • Alma and James embody what it means to be a good host. From their timely responses and willingness to go above and beyond it is hard to imaging anyone giving less than five stars. Over our two night stay we received the care and service that you would expect from a place triple the cost. You can bet that if we are looking to get out of the city again we will not have to look any further. The cabin was perfect and so was the location.

Phoenicia was voted one of the Top 10 Coolest Small Towns in America by Budget Travel Magazine, and boasts restaurants, bars, boutiques, a general store and art gallery. The bungalow has two floors. Upstairs you will find two bedrooms (one queen & one full) along with a full bathroom. The back bedroom has a quaint Juliette balcony for looking longingly at the mountains or star gazing in the evening. Downstairs is a spacious living room with a TV (Roku with Netflix, Hulu etc). • The house was just lovely. Incredible light, charming decor and generally a good comfortable vibe. The location felt very private even though it was in town. Everything you need within walking distance. Karina was a very attentive, responsive and accommodating host. The whole experience was great. If you're looking for a getaway in a quirky Catskills town, this is the place.

  • We loved our stay in Karina's home! Communication prior to arrival was very quick and clear, and the guide to the area she provided was extremely valuable. The home itself is lovely--a lot of care has clearly gone into it. Everything you could possibly need is provided. We were completely comfortable and especially enjoyed sitting out in the yard. Would definitely stay again! Thanks, Karina!

We'd like everyone to enjoy this cool property so we are offering a special mid-week rate for this lovely studio of your dreams. It's perfect for experiencing the beauty of the Catskill Preserve. Hike, eat, chill ... and leave completely restored!
Welcome to Catskill Getaways in Phoenicia! Your fabulous getaway starts with a scenic drive to the Catskills and a stop at one of the farm stands for provisions. Once you breathe in this glorious mountain air and see the Esopus Creek (really a river) you'll agree -- the living is easy! Catskill Getaways is a former half acre bungalow property at the base of Woodland Valley. We're located in a safe, historic and quaint neighborhood almost a mile from Phoenicia. The Esopus Studio was thoughtfully renovated and features a modern kitchen, a crisp clean bathroom with a heat lamp, a front open porch and back screened-in porch for your exclusive use, and a queen size bed with quality linens. There's an ottoman that converts to a small twin bed. If you've never experienced a gas cast iron heat stove, it heats and looks like a wood stove, but you don't have to feed the fire. There is also a seasonal flower / organic veggie-herb garden. The Studio shares a wall with the kitchen of the main house which is also an Airbnb. If there are guests present please respect their privacy. We use high quality, non-toxic cleaning products to ease our footprint on the environment and to help guests with chemical sensitivities. No need to compromise. You have the best of all worlds. It’s all good … nice, fresh, clean lodgings, impeccable attention to your needs, perfect location and competitively priced. There are amenities galore. Have breakfast on your porch or backyard. Make 'smores in the fire pit. Pick salad from the vegetable garden. Visit at the Pony Bar(n). Skip rocks along the Esopus Creek. Meander along peaceful country roads. Ride a bike. Walk down the street and take a dip in the Esopus. Take advantage of the multitude of activities like tubing, skiing, swimming, fishing, hiking and much more. Watch a movie on the TV (no cable TV access); select from a small library of DVD movies or stream from your computer or smart phone. Take a break from the city without having to travel far. It’s just 1 hour and 50 minutes from the George Washington Bridge to our quaint and cool hamlet of Phoenicia. If you want to stay local, Phoenicia is self-contained with a variety of restaurants, all sorts of shops, some quirky, a cooperative gallery and a community theater. We're known for our friendly, artsy and unpretentious small town charm combined with great restaurant and pub choices. If you want to venture out, the Hudson Valley has a treasure chest of cultural offerings. This is a perfect time for all sorts of summer activities. Go tubing on the Esopus Creek. Relax by the water hole down the block, take a scenic drive, check out one of the farm-to-table restaurants, get cozy in front of the gas fireplace in the cooler evenings and take in the night sky by the Pony Bar(n) at night ... restorative and magical. Booking info: While booking please remember that we have a 3-day minimum for holidays. Our rates are based on a 2 person occupancy, and we have weekday/ weekend/seasonal rates. Please let us know if you are bringing children and their ages to make sure we can accommodate everyone comfortably. If the dates don't work with the Esopus Studio, go to our profile page on Airbnb and check out: Esopus Cottage: perfect for a last minute getaway and the Zen Cottage ... a retreat to nature. Please note that while we accept bookings from first-time Airbnb users with no reviews, we do expect you to have fulfilled the basic verification requirements and profile info as well as provide a note about yourself and others traveling with you. One dog (crated if left alone) is okay with prior approval; we charge a $40 pet fee. There is $25 charge to replace lost keys. ==================================== Here are some of the things that make Phoenicia special: In 2017 we were rated as the No. 1 destination outside of NYC by Curbed New York, a real-estate and travel blog. Phoenicia was voted one of Ten Coolest Small Towns in America by Budget Traveler. Phoenicia was featured in Travel and Leisure's 25 Easy Weekend Getaways. We are part of the watershed that supplies water to 9 million customers including all of NYC--the Ashokan reservoir. Our hamlet of Phoenicia has a population of around 300 yet hosts monumental events like the International Festival of the Voice with panache. We are near four ski resorts: Belleayre, Hunter, Windham and Plattekill. The Phoenicia Library lends out fishing poles and ukuleles. You are always near a world-class hiking trail. Our beloved local poet is a candidate at every presidential election. Most of our friends think Phoenicia has a vibe that’s cooler than Woodstock. We keep the location of swimming holes secret until we’re sure you will respect our pristine waters...really. Farm-to-Table foodies will be in good company. The first ski area in the state of NY was located just down the street. Birding is great. Hummingbirds visit us in the summer. We get excited about the annual garden tour and the the yearly artists tour. Visit with the local peeps at the Arts Upstairs openings and community gatherings every month. For culinary treats buy local: Migliorelli's Farm Stand on Route 28 is now open. Most of the area is a protected forest preserve. There is a plethora of sports and cultural activities, a world-class spa, fabulous restaurants at all price ranges, fun shops, awesome bakeries, and to meet the needs of the most discerning travelers. Our guests hail from all parts of the world to this very small hamlet. For these reasons and many more, we think we have an awesome place to live. Our goal is to share it with you and make sure you have an enjoyable and restorative stay.
The property is located on two square blocks made up of full-time and weekend residents, seasonal guests, and short-term vacation rental guests. We are located less than a mile from Main Street Phoenicia.
  • We loved the cosiness, warmth, stylish decoration, privacy, the friendly and welcoming owners, Alma and James. The sounds of the leaves rustling in the breeze and the nearby river made our stay very peaceful.

    Nigel2015-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I had an amazing trip to the Catskills, thanks to the incredibly hospitality of Alma and James. The house is in a sweet neighborhood walking distance to a local creek, and we enjoyed taking walks along the water and returning to relax in the communal space in back of the cottage - perfect for bonfires with your fellow Airbnb'ers at the cottage next door (they shared their s'mores - what more do you want from neighbors?) . Alma and James were perfect - giving us complete privacy as we needed to destress from city life, while checking in regularly and sharing treats from the garden (our daily breakfast was bread from local fave Bread Alone, tomatoes from the garden, and the freshest mozzarella from a nearby farmstead - perfection with the olive oil and vinegar in the stocked kitchen). The studio is small space optimization extraordinaire - you share a wall with the main house, but feel you're in a completely private space given the separate entrance. Near Phoenicia, we loved eating at Phoenicia Diner and Goods Luncheonette, hiking the Giant Ledge, and shopping at the Migliorelli Farm Stand -- on our next trip, we want to pick up provisions along Gourmand Alley, and scale Slide, Cornell and Wittenberg Mts. Nearby/in Woodstock, we loved yoga at Euphoria, climbing to the Overlook Tower, eating at Shindig, beers at the communal, outdoor tables at Commune Salon and Jane's ice cream at Taco Juan's. In Saugerties, we loved BBQ and live music on Friday at 'cue. In Hudson, sunset at the waterfront park, the farmer's market (Wed/Sat), wandering the design/gallery shops and eating at Food Studio were all fabulous. A good day trip nearby: hiking at Minnewaska/Mohunk, beers at Rough Cut brewery and a tasting at Tuthilltown Distillery. Next time, we're hoping the upper trail at Kaatterskill is open, and we can fit in Breakneck Ridge (a hike in btw Beacon and Cold Springs, so a drive, but looks like a fun mid-week day trip to avoid the crowds and pair with great restaurants like the Hop in Beacon). There were great nearby spas and movie theaters for our one rainy day. All in all, an endless number of options for a week-long trip that made us want to return to the area on a regular basis -- the combo of amazing food, a naturally gorgeous setting and blissfully cooler temps from steamy DC made it a great summer escape (it took us 6 hours of driving, great paired w/ breakfast at Bullfrog Bagels and Maketto on the way out of town, lunch at V Street in Philly and dinner at the Hop in Beacon, also a great spot to pick up local beer for the studio... but we never met a road trip that we didn't think would be infinitely better with an eating bonanza worked in). Enjoy!

  • Alma and James' place is just what you want if you are planning on staying for a couple of days at the heart of the Catskills. The studio is very well furnished, perfectly clean and, and just lovely. We only met both of them briefly, but it was enough to know that they are both good natured and they enjoy having people around. We specially loved our morning breakfasts on the porch before hiking, a restful nap on the hammock and picking up some leaves from the veggie garden for dinner. We would gladly come back.

    Jon Ander2016-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the Esopus Studio, it was so homely and had everything we needed. We enjoyed the veranda and eat our breakfast out there as it catches the morning sun. We liked the fresh herbs and veg. Alma and James were great hosts, being there when we needed them and sharing their homemade produce. The studio was peaceful, quiet and safe with easy access to trails.

    John2016-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay - the room was clean, nicely decorated but not too busy, and quiet. Thank you!

  • Wonderful hosts. Everything you read about the place is totally true. We will probably return to this wonderful oasis for sure. Great time!

  • Alma and James are fantastic hosts. They were easy to communicate with and willing to provide any and all things necessary for a great stay. The accommodations are exactly as described and very clean. Thanks for a great stay!

    Bret2016-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Alma & James were so welcoming and their studio was perfect, more than we could have hoped for! Clean and beautifully decorated. It was an ideal base for us to explore the Catskill mountains from.

  • Awesome! We loved everything about F&A cabin. From smooth communication with the owners to the cabin coziness and the peaceful surrounding. The decoration is just as beautiful as it is authentic. A fantastic getaway for the family. We'll definitely try to go back again maybe in summer. Thanks for offering The opportunity to rent such a gem. Frederic and Family.

  • Frankie and Andrew's house was amazingly furnished and the property was beautiful. Was a pleasure to hang out by the stream here!

    Preston2015-05-17T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely few days at Frankie and Andrew's cabin. It was cozy, and very quiet, except for the sound of the stream, and very handy for Phoenicia which is really just down the end of the road. It was also extremely clean and tastefully furnished. We didn't want to leave and hope to come back again soon!

    Nick2014-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • We love staying at Frankie and Andrew's cozy cabin! It is always perfect. Extremely clean, beautifully decorated, great communication and a private & picturesque setting. We just wish we could stay forever!

    Ilona2017-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • This country cabin is a gem. It has a very warm, cozy, and yet very practical. There are remarkably touches throughout the cabin. The kitchen is well appointed and you are for need of nothing other than the food. The location could not be better - nestled in a very private area alongside a beautiful rushing stream. The location of the fire pit would be spectacular during the summer months (we went in December). Even though a visit in December, the individual heaters throughout the cabin allow to manage heat very well and the cabin was wonderfully warm. We had a number of questions once we arrived and Frankie was immediately accessible and followed up on all our requests. A wonderful host. There is no doubt that I would highly recommend this cabin to a couple, small group (family) in the winter months. I could only imagine how serene and beautiful it would be in the summer months and we plan on finding out!

    Steven2016-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Frankie and Andrew have a beautifully restored rustic cabin in the woods about 5 minutes from Phoenicia. It is situated overlooking a beautiful stream. The nearby fire pit is perfect for roasting mallows. The cabin has everything one would need to be self-sufficient for a few days, after stopping at the natural food store in Woodstock. The accommodations are comfortable and cozy. We would definitely recommend this Airbnb to anyone staying in the area.

    Jonathan2016-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect place for a peaceful getaway vacation! Quick drive ( under 2 hours) from NYC and easy to find. Frankie was great at communicating everything that we needed. Went with two other friends and the space was perfect, clean and very comfortable. Kitchen was very well equipped and has everything you may need. The sounds from the creek and waterfalls may have been the best part. Already looking forward to going back! Thanks Frankie & Andrew.

    Steven2017-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Frankie and Andrew are great hosts. Their house is is beautiful, well equipped and very well taken care of. I have visited their place with my family twice this summer and each time we had great relaxing time.

  • We were so happy we chose to stay at Esme's cabin. The cabin is a little gem!!!! Hope to be back soon.

    Izi2017-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • Esme and Corey are great hosts---they're helpful and there when you need them, but not overbearing. The cabin is small but has everything you could need, including a kitchenette and a cozy wood stove. Plus its in a good location about equidistant between Woodstock and Phoenicia. Great place!

    Joe2018-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I stayed for a couple nights at one of Esme and Corey’s cabins. It was exactly as shown, so peaceful and quiet. It’s a small efficiency type cabin, which worked fine since we were out most of the day hiking and exploring the towns. They were both extremely communicative and the sauna was also a blissful add on to the experience. Hope to be back!

    Alia2017-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend dog and I had an awesome time!! It was important to us to have somewhere pet friendly and Sawyer was able to explore the grounds and go on some amazing hikes with us. The cabin and room were perfectly clean and cozy!!

    Tina2018-03-25T00:00:00Z
  • This was the perfect little getaway for me and my fiance. The cabin exceeded our expectations. It was clean, cozy and perfectly located. We enjoyed both our privacy in the woods and wondering around both Woodstock and Phoenicia. I was a little concerned that it was going to be too warm inside the cabin, but it was cool even in July. Thank again Esme and Corey for sharing your cabin with us! Jenna and Jeremy

    Jenna2015-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • Had a really lovely time at Esme and Corey's cabin. Really quiet and beautiful. The sauna was a big hit! Our puppy had a blast running through the snow and trees, and then sleeping by the fire place at night! Was super clean and comfortable! Hope to get back this summer! Highly recommend!

    Austin2015-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed in one of the two cabins available for rent. Both cabins are very cozy and well equipped. This place is quiet and in the middle of the woods. Ideal for a relaxed weekend and hiking in the Catskills. Esme and Corey are lovely hosts and very accommodating. We had a wonderful weekend. Thank you.

    Daniel2017-12-10T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay. The cabin was clean and beautiful, our hosts definitely put a lot of work into the details. We enjoyed sitting on the porch listening to the rain. Had a wonderful time poking around Woodstock during the day. Would love to stay here again.

Hi there, Cabin Lovers! PLEASE DON'T SUBMIT A FORMAL BOOKING REQUEST YET. FIRST, OPEN A CONVERSATION. See below for more on that. Spend cozy evenings reading beside the fire in our spacious living area - or listening to the sounds of nature on the front porch of our beautiful, rustic log cabin. Amazing trout fishing is just down the hill on the creek - which feeds into the Esopus River a mile away. Another mile up the road are some of New York State's best hiking and camping trails.
Hi there, Cabin Lovers! PLEASE DON'T SUBMIT A FORMAL BOOKING REQUEST YET. FIRST, OPEN A CONVERSATION. We have to "meet" you via e-mail before we consider a booking. Also -- We have no way to show our minimum stay price except as a weekend price, but it applies even if your stay is on weekends. It's generally $350-$400 for the first two nights, and $80 - $100 (and sometimes we do last-minute discounts) for each additional night, even on weeknights, but we can't show this on AirB except by showing a weekend price. So the price you are seeing may be too low (or too high). We will adjust it when we see your dates. We can be more sure that you will respect the rules at our beloved cabin if you respect this first request too. Also please do not inquire for short stays that are more than 3 weeks away, we can only offer stays of 5 or more nights if it's farther ahead. Our price per night goes down the longer you stay. Our price is $350 - 400 for the first two nights and $80 - 100 for each additional night. If you want to book with us, don't submit a reservation request, just a query, so that I can adjust the price to reflect your dates. AirBnB fees may cause a higher price to show than you see for this listing on other sites. Spend cozy evenings reading beside the fire in our spacious living area - or listening to the sounds of nature on the front porch of our beautiful and rustic log cabin. Some of New York's best trout fishing is just down the hill on the creek - which feeds into the Esopus River a mile away. And another mile up the road are some of New York State's best hiking and camping trails. Our cabin is beautifully decorated with local antiques; and we can tell you all the best places to look for good stuff. This is a perfect spot for nature lovers who want true serenity and the glory of the mountains and sunshine all around you. No matter the season, you will find your soul restored after a weekend (or if you're lucky, a whole week) at our place. We love dogs and cats as long as they don't scratch the furniture. They will thank you for taking them to this little piece of heaven! A note -- we have a one-week minimum until about 3 weeks ahead. Unfortunately we can't indicate this on the calendar.
    This is mountain paradise!
  • Cabin was exactly as described! Lovely and peaceful and super close to everything in Phoenicia!!! Highly recommend for a relaxing getaway.

  • This is out 2nd year staying at the cabin and we love it. As we sit on the porch i wish the trees were trimmed so we can see the hills in the back round. See you again next year. Bob

  • I neglected to bring a copy of all the paper work from the internet. In order to find the info I went through the basket in the living room sorted it out and finally found the folder about the cabin. This should be displayed on the table when a guest arrives. I am grateful that when I had a question the owners response was quick. I found the neighbors to be friendly and pleasant.

  • If you're looking to go off the grid for a few days, Evelyn's cabin is the perfect place. We spent a long weekend here for our anniversary and had a wonderful time grilling on the porch, taking naps in the hammock, just enjoying the woods and solitude. When we were feeling brave we took a dip in the freezing mountain stream right across the street. Overall, it was a great time. We hope to come back soon.

  • Great place to stay! We would have loved to spend more time there! Cozy cabin, nice, clean, well equipped kitchen, coffee included, great location, fresh flowers on the table, very welcoming host! Happy to recommend to others!

  • Suzanne was an incredible host! The house was even better than we expected and was in the perfect location. Close to hikes, to good food, and a short drive to Woodstock. Suzanne was nice enough to suggest several things that our four year old would enjoy. We loved hearing the sound of the running stream behind the cabin. We're already excited to plan our next stay!

    Brian2017-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Suzanne's cottage was the perfect place to stay for a fall weekend getaway. It was warm and cozy and had every essential you could ever need. It's also very well-situated, being right near the cute town of Phoenicia and in very reasonable proximity to Woodstock and other Catskills-related activities (I recommend hiking Giant's Ledge). Even though I didn't want to leave, I am feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after my stay here!

    Alex2017-11-12T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely perfect. My husband and I took a last minute trip, one day off work to go skiing. Also my first time using Air B&B and had a great experience. The Home: it was lovely, clean and had all the amenities needed. The house had so much charm and character. The fire place was awesome to just sit back and enjoy a drink by the warm fire after a long 2.5 hour drive up. Hunter was only 20 minutes away from this cabin. Check in and check out were easy. The Host: Suzanne was quick to respond with any questions I had prior to booking. She also recommended some great restaurants in the area as well as back roads to Hunter in case it got messy from the snow. Looking forward staying here again in the future.

  • Suzy's cabin absolutely exceeded our expectations for the weekend. It's actually quite a lot of space! The backyard is peaceful and the river is just through the woods. The weather was perfect so we spent a lot of time down by the river or out on the porch having our meals. The kitchen is spacious and stocked with all the basic necessities. The couch is very cozy and can fit two people for a nice mid-day nap :) The Phoenicia Diner is a short drive down the main road, which we highly recommend! Food as good as anything you'll find in NYC. Suzy is a wonderful hostess and allows you to be very independent. She gave us plenty of advice and directions before our trip so we were able to stop and grab groceries before we lost cell service and easily find our way to the cabin. I highly recommend this sweet little spot! Unplug and relax for a little while, I know I'll be coming back.

  • My father, son (9 years old), and I stayed at the cottage from March 1-5, during Storm Riley, which we were probably not fully prepared for. This was intended as a birthday ski trip for me, and the first time to this area for all of us. Suzy informed us about the storm during our trip north, and helped ensure a smooth check-in despite delays we experienced in our trip. We were incredibly excited about the prospect of more snow, because it looked as though the local resorts were hurting from a warmer than expected Feb. I don't think any of us fully anticipated the full impacts of Riley. The cottage is beautifully cared for and well-equipped. My father does home repairs and renovation and was impressed by the use of space and small touches that were instantly obvious. The front room function as an enclosed porch and mud-room and it gave us a place to put our skis at the end of the day and put our shoes prior to entering the main living space. We wished that the metal tray we put our skis on was slightly larger, but in retrospect, we should have moved it to a corner and stood the skis up. During our stay, the entire area experienced significant snowfall and lengthy power outages - this isn't something any reasonable person should blame the host for, and they checked on us to ensure we were OK and comfortable. We took the snowfall as a huge bonus, and if it weren't for the power outage, I think everything would have been perfect. The cottage uses gas for heating and cooking, and the gas heater had a battery-powered thermostat, plus a wood fireplace that we used, and were very comfortable despite the power outage. Also, we were able to use the range for cooking without power. We conserved hot water after the outage and were pleasantly surprised that it lasted longer than we expected. We also took advantage of candles that were present, and snow banks outside to keep some of our perishables cold. The cottage is equipped with a Kuerig machine which was fantastic, though we wished there had been a small stove top coffee pot when the power failed. There was a shovel present which was much appreciated, though a second one would have been helpful in our unusual circumstance. The board games in the cottage were welcome when we lost power and helped us pass time with my son. Fortunately, the power returned during our stay and we were also able to take advantage of DVD player and collection of movies present in the binder next to the Futon. The beds were both comfortable, and my Dad gave the futon mattress two thumbs up. Suzy recommended the IGA Boiceville Market for supplies, a recommendation I wholeheartedly second. It's variety rivalled large market's I've seen elsewhere - a nice surprise. Be aware though that it closes at 8 on weekdays. Phoenicia also has a market...

  • Suzanne has the utmost care for her cabin and it shows! Our group fell in love with the quaintness and cleanliness of it. Suzanne's warm and thorough welcome left us with no questions and a sense of comfort. Loved having a code lock to enter the home and not worrying about keys! She was close by if anything was needed, but also gave us the space to enjoy. The pull out futon is very comfortable and with four guests, we were cozy and not crowded at all. Coffee on the covered porch or back open deck was a must every morning! Suzanne is flexible and cares deeply about your stay, she is one I will go back and visit!!

    Jessa2017-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • Suzanne's cabin is lovely. Even better than the pictures suggest! My boyfriend enjoyed making a fire in the fireplace and we found the cabin spacious as well as cozy. The suggestions that Suzanne provided ended up shaping a lot of our trip and we throughly loved exploring Phoenicia and Woodstock. Overall, a clean, welcoming space. I would definitely stay here again.

Booking April - November! Enjoy falling to sleep to the sound a of mountain stream in this tranquil cottage surrounded by Catskill Park Woodlands. Spacious two story cottage with creative space for writing, yoga, or arts. Across from the Esopus stream & one mile to Phoenicia.
We affectionately refer to our guest cottage as "Phoebe Cottage" due to the nesting Phoebe's that return every year and take up residence under the eaves of the entrance and usually have two clutches. Depending on the time you stay with us you may get to see the little fledglings take their first flight. This cottage is definitely an escape. It is nestled up the mountain about 150 yards from the road (either referred to as Old Route 28, or Old Plank Road to the locals, or Mt. Tremper-Phoenicia Road, by new mapping software) which winds by the Esopus Stream. It is surrounded by Catskill Park wild land. You can go out your door and stroll up the mountain if you desire, or there are many trail-heads in the area you can take advantage of. The only other home you will see is our home across the drive-way. You will have your privacy but also the security of someone nearby to answer any questions. Your views will be of woodlands, streams, mountains, and the gardens we have cultivated. The downstairs of the two story cottage features a comfortable living space with roomy day bed that sits in front of a large picture window. The day bed also doubles as a very comfortable twin bed for a third guest. The drop leaf dining table seats two to four people and is positioned in front of a lovely propane soapstone stove to warm up the room should you be staying with us during the cooler months. The kitchen is well appointed to accommodate your needs, including toaster oven, microwave, electric tea kettle, small refrigerator, French press, double hot plate, blender, crock pot, fondue pot, etc. Please note there is NO oven. Upstairs is one large great room with a queen size bed, dresser, night tables, rocker, and antique desk. There is a closet and a large farm table that spans the width of the room. When sitting at the table you are looking out onto the tree tops and mountains. It is perfect place to write with plenty of room to stretch out your papers and books, or work on an art project. And in-between the bedroom and the table is a nice size open space with a high chapel ceiling. A perfect place to stretch out a yoga mat and practice unencumbered. Outside the cottage there is comfortable lounge seating for 4 people and a charcoal grill available for your use (you will need to provide the charcoal/lighter fluid). The cottage is decorated with eclectic vintage furniture and art. Much of the textile items (pillows, curtains, cushions etc) were created by your host, who has her own cottage business, Goats Hill Sudio. There is a book shelf filled with a wide variety of weekend reading material and board games. There is high-speed wireless internet service (30 Mbps down, 5 Mbps up). The Cellular towers do not reach to our location, however AT&T customers can use our microcell and have full service on the mountain. Down in the village, Verizon customers will find some pockets of connectivity if they need it. Our house phone can be made available to you for local calls or in case of any emergency. There is no TV, but you can stream shows and movies on your laptops or other connected devices and there is a smart phone dock/speaker system so you can play music and such from your phone/tablet. We have tried to provide all the necessities for preparing meals in a vacation rental. During the summer months we are happy to share our herb garden with you. And if you are a fan of hot-sauce be sure to ask Wayne about his home made varieties...he is always happy to share. If you enjoy nature this is a great place to stay. It is not uncommon to see a family of turkeys walk through the yard, red and gray squirrels, chipmunks, bunnies, deer, occasionally a nocturnal porcupine, fox, bears (rarely and usually across the ravine) and whole host of birds including, Phoebes, Humming Birds, Blue Jays, Tufted Titmouses, Assorted Woodpeckers, Hawks, Eagles, Chickadees, Gold Finches, Cardinals and Robins.
"Once in a while, you discover a town that has everything - great coffee, food with character, shop owners with purpose." That's how Budget Travel described Phoenicia when they voted us one of the "Coolest Small Towns in America" in 2011. The town of Phoenicia offers several restaurants including The Phoenicia Diner for wonderful breakfasts and lunches. Brios for outdoor seating and brick oven pizza. The Sportsman is the local watering hole. Evening dining can be found at Tavern 214, and The Phoenician. There is also an eclectic array of shops and galleries, and a sweet little theatre that has a variety of weekend shows. And Phoenicia is home to the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice and Mount Tremper Arts. Phoenicia is located in the center of the Catskill State Park, with 700,000 acres of natural beauty, half of which has been designated as “forever wild”. There are numerous hiking trails, of all lengths and for all levels of hikers. And Phoenicia is known for “tubing” on the Esopus. You can rent your tubes and gear in the center of town at Town Tinker Tube. For a nominal fee you can obtain a fishing license in town and fish for trout in the Esopus. If you are interested in the healing arts and massage please check out or ask me about Kathryn Haberand Ricarda O’Conner for information and schedules. Both have studios within a few miles of the cottage. Spiritually Phoenicia is home to the Menla Moutain Retreat, The Phoenicia United Methodist Church, St Francis DeSales Parish, Phoenicia Wesleyan Church and the Zen Mountain Monastery And Phoenicia is only 14 miles (about a 25 minute drive) From Woodstock, NY.
  • Once again, we had the most wonderful time at Christa's Mountainside Cottage Retreat. It's even more beautiful in the Spring! My girlfriend and I fell in love with this spot and it's now our go-to destination outside of the city. If you're looking for a breath of fresh air and a cozy cabin, you can do no better.

  • The listing description was very accurate, there were no unwelcome surprises, only a few pleasant ones. I was in very close contact with the owners, Christa and her husband Wayne. They both were attentive hosts, careful to provide me with clear directions to the property and provide me with all sorts of helpful information about the area. I was greeted upon my arrival and oriented to the cottage and surroundings. I felt that the hosts were very much there with information and assistance should I have ever needed any.

  • Mountainside Cottage Retreat aka Phoebe Cottage is a little slice of Heaven and I cannot recommend a little get away here more enthusiastically! Christa and Wayne are lovely people who will make you feel welcome and at home while giving you your space and privacy. Super comfy bed and a beautiful setting.

  • This was the perfect getaway for us, away from the noise and fast paced life of NYC. We had an amazing time. Christa and Warren are such great hosts. They live next to the cottage, but far enough to ensure the privacy of their guests. They gave us a quick tour of the cottage, which was so tastefully furnished. The cottage has everything you need, is super clean, and, you will feel like it's your home. They have a great selection of herbs, and Christa was nice enough to give us a fresh bunch of mint. Warren mentioned that we may be able to see the bears, and what do you know, we saw these cute little cubs running accross the driveway. Yay. There are plenty of things to do in this town. I highly recommend tubing in the Esopus. A really good place to eat is the Phoenicia diner. Can't wait to go back. Thank you Christa and Warren.

  • Christa and Wayne are great hosts. The cottage was just what we needed for a comfortable, relaxing stay in the Catskills. The location provided a good base for many hikes and wildlife viewing . Christa's guidebook as well as the details proved in her AirBnB listing were very helpful.-She provided information about everything you need from hikes to restaurants to perfect directions to the property. Wayne gave us a couple of great tips for dinner in Phoenicia (Brio's pizza is top-notch!) We wish we were there right now, sitting on the comfy couch, watching the hummingbirds on the feeder...

    Tina2018-06-28T00:00:00Z
  • Christa made us feel very welcome. Se was prompt attending to our needs as soon as we arrived. she showed us all necessary details of the cottage and has an impressive collection of area information. The cottage was exactly as described. A very quiet area, in a woodsy setting. Beautiful plants and flowers everywhere. The location was close to many interesting towns, parks, lakes, streams and trails. We loved our stay.

    Rich2016-06-04T00:00:00Z
  • I had a wonderful and relaxing couple of days at this Mountainside Cottage and Christa and Wayne were fantastic hosts. Everything was as described and falling asleep to the sound of the hillside stream right outside was delightful. I would love to stay here again and would definitely recommend the cottage to anyone wanting to experience the peaceful Catskills!

  • My girlfriend and I went up to stay in the Glass Mountain in to get away from NYC for the weekend and relax. We could not have picked a better place to stay! The house is so cozy. We absolutely loved the bottle of wine Jeff and Brooke left for us as well using their record playing. The town of Phoenicia is a few minute walk from the house as is a delicious farm to table restaurant. We were nervous about going up without a car (took the bus), but everything worked out perfectly. Jeff picked us up from the bus stop and drove us to the waterfall hike the following day. Other than that we walked around town, went tubing down the river which was ideal on a hot summer day. We HIGHLY recommend making an effort to go to the Phoenicia Diner while you are there. It is about mile or so from the house and the food is unbelievable. It was the best diner I have ever been to. We ended going there 3 times in the three days we were in Phoenicia. Jeff was a great host. If you are looking to get away for the weekend book stay here.

    Devin2015-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Brooke and Jeff’s place. Phoenicia is a beautiful town to visit and this was a perfect place to stay. We felt comfortable enough to roam the grounds and really enjoy ourselves. We even took a little nap in the grass. So close to so much hiking and a quick drive or walk to the little downtown. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

  • We had a lovely and relaxing stay. Brooke and Jeff have created a beautiful space. Highly recommended , thanks so much.

  • A good place to stay in Phoenicia. You're a quick walk away from town and the apartment was much more spacious than we anticipated. We only met Brooke and Jeff briefly but they were nice and drove us to and from the bus stop (we came in from NYC). Overall, a quaint and cozy place to stay - would stay here again.

  • I can't say enough about our stay at Glass Mountain. We absolutely loved it! The Marvar apartment was perfect for us with its eclectic, artsy, comfortable furnishings, books and art work not to mention the super comfortable bed and lovely well stocked kitchen. There's even a porch attached to the suite with an outdoor table, lights, candles and a charcoal grill. We cooked every night in the beautiful back yard. It was like staying at a creative friend's apartment who thought of everything! Brooke even left us a welcome bottle of wine and fresh tomatoes and peppers from her garden. We couldn't have loved it more. The town is quaint and friendly and the surrounding area is breathtakingly beautiful with long windy drives and hikes to enjoy. We will definitely be back. Thank you Brooke and Jeff!

    Jennifer2015-09-28T00:00:00Z

Our newly renovated cottage sits among flowering gardens & song birds in summer, incredible fall foliage in autumn, and a wonderland of winter in cold season. We are across the road from a lovely stream, just 2 miles from the village of Phoenicia, and close to skiing. We are in the heart of the Catskill Mountains at the edge of the Hudson Valley in a beautiful forest preserve, 2+ hours from NYC. The cottage is filled with lovely artwork inspired by our travels and every corner is a pleasure!
Welcome! We have lovingly designed and renovated the cottage inspired by our travels and our love of nature. It was an old barn which we transformed into a private cottage in the spring of 2016. We have continued to add stone patios and gardens, hand made cabinetry & artistic touches. We love the cottage and think it is a beautiful addition to our hand crafted home! Antique lighting and many Balinese touches including wood carvings & batik art adorn this tranquil space. The cottage is an excellent space for two people , or really close friends/family who feel comfortable sharing small open areas. There is a queen size therapeutic mattress in the sleeping loft overlooking the living area. (Please note that access to the loft requires a climb up!) The loft has minimal head room but a delightful coziness! There is a sofa bed down stairs with a very comfy memory foam topper which provides for two additional guests. The total cottage area is approximately 400 square feet. The cottage has eating area with a coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven, sink and mini fridge and is equipped with dishes and all of the other basics you may need. Gourmet coffees and teas are stocked. (Please note that the cottage does not have an oven). The sweet dining area looks out over the gardens filled with beautiful birds and flowers. Our gardens are yours to enjoy and there are fresh organic vegetables which we are happy to share! There is a stone patio just outside, with a BBQ and a fire pit, at the base of a lovely wooded area and hiking trails into the mountains are easily accessed. The bathroom has a beautiful hand tiled & stone shower looking out into the woods. We supply locally made luxurious soaps and lotions and our bathroom is a mini spa! Perennial flower gardens, a delightful gold fish pond, stone patios, and vegetable gardens surround the cottage and each window looks out to a lovely view! Your eyes will be pleased here! The cottage is in a separate building from our main house, about 20 steps away, connected to our woodworking shop. There is plenty of privacy, and many of our guests come here to have solitude and respite from the busy world. We are always available and happy to be here. There is also a large back yard for the cottage, facing the woods. We are in the middle of the beautiful Catskill Forest Preserve, there are many state trails nearby, some short easy hikes and some all day hikes. We welcome children but we are not child proof! The loft is very tempting for children but not ideal for really little ones. Please let us know if you have children so we can talk about details. We have two gorgeous cats who live in the house and spend their days outside chasing butterflies. The cats do not go in the cottage so no worries for those allergic! We are 15 minutes drive from Hunter Ski Slope, and Belleayre Mountain, and 30 minutes from Windham. Happy to give you reports on ski conditions! We have wonderful places to eat nearby, including the famous Phoenicia Diner, Sweet Sues for incredible pancakes, Brio's for wood fired pizza, and Tavern 214 for delicious farm to table gourmet. Lots of fun shopping, terrific hiking trails, mountain streams and lakes, and live music are all very close by. We are so happy that so many enthusiastic fun loving people are coming to our area, some moving here and starting great little business, and others just enjoying the natural beauty of the Catskill Mountains.
We are 2 miles outside of Phoenicia, in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of New York. We are 15 minutes drive from Hunter Ski Slope, and Belleayre Mountain, and 30 minutes from Windham. There are incredible hiking trails with choices of easy walks to a full days hike. We have many maps of state trails available. There are also gorgeous streams and waterfalls, some hidden gems we can share with you. You will need a car unless you are a very strong bike rider! It's a very steep hill we live on! There are fantastic restaurants all around us, and a ton of great things to do. Woodstock is just 20 minutes from us. Great music, festivals, arts, and wonderful restaurants. Nature abounds!
  • Our family of three had a wonderful stay! This place has the convenience of AirBnB and charm/hospitality of a Bed &Breakfast (sans breakfast) I will not state the parts that are already available with the on-line descriptions but others that might not be so obvious. When we first arrived host Dara greeted us with her own veggies from her garden, apologized for not stocking the fridge with some cold beer (and then got us some) and had a cute stuffed toy for our 2 year old toddler! The entire cottage has a beautiful scent and her bathroom toiletries are nice quality items that makes the stay even more enjoyable. The shower is hot with strong pressure. The pull out sofa that I slept on with my baby comes with a mattress top and was surprisingly very comfortable and roomy. Dara had great suggestions suitable for our specific family visit (ie children friendly lake suggestion) and went out of her way and made a private (Hidden by Airbnb) group to help us find a great babysitter while we attended a wedding. We appreciated her detailed care, flexibility, easy communication and good taste. Also her photography artwork is very impressive.

  • From the moment we stepped into the cottage we were in love with it. And then meeting Dara and Dave just sealed the deal, these two are so helpful and sweet, it made our stay all the better! From the beautiful cottage to the gorgeous backyard and fire pit, everything was perfect! Not to mention the coffee, and awesome tea collection along with many other thoughtful touches! We had our dog with us and she was greeted with a WARM welcome from Dara and Dave as well! Our dog was loving the property too! Dara and Dave, we will be back!

  • Dara & Dave are very generous hosts and went beyond our expectation cleaning our car after unexpected heavy snowfall. The cottage is an awesome place away from the city. We were there for the Christmas and really enjoyed visiting shops etc in nearby towns, especially Woodstock. We will be back to enjoy the spring-beauty of the area. Highly recommended. Thanks Dara :)

  • We had a wonderful weekend at the Garden Cottage. Quaint and thoughtfully decorated, it made for a cozy stay. Great location—close to Phoenecia and Tannersville, which both have cute downtowns with good places to eat and thrift. Also beautiful hiking opportunities nearby!

    Maria2016-11-13T00:00:00Z
  • Dara was a great hostess. I had left my phone charger at home and she let me borrow hers all weekend. The apartment was cozy and had a great assortment of teas that my boyfriend and I loved. Her husband Dave set up the firewood in the firepit so all we had to do was light the fire. We went to dinner at a place about a mile and a half up the road. I highly recommend it!

    Lindsay2017-11-26T00:00:00Z
  • Dara and Dave are incredible hosts and their garden cottage is a dream come true. They are friendly and welcoming and readily available but also respect your privacy. The garden is unbelievably beautiful and the cottage has everything you could possibly need and more. We loved relaxing as we were surrounded by beautiful sites and scents. Dara even gave us some fresh garlic from her garden and home made pesto that was out of this world. I can't wait to return!

  • Enchanted cottage. Cozy, private with detail to everything. Magical yard and outdoor area with birds and chipmunks galore. Dara and Dave made us feel so welcome. We loved every moment of staying in their cottage and hope to return again.

  • Dara and Dave were such great hosts and their cottage was gorgeous. Such a comfortable, beautiful place with such fun things to do nearby. The suggestions they provided were amazing, and they went above and beyond to make our excursion incredible.

Sweet cottage nestled in the rolling Catskill Mountains, along side an endlessly pulsating brook with breathtaking mountain views.
Clean, private, light-filled, 700sf, 2 story cottage, set back off the road. Prepare a meal with a nicely stocked kitchen and pantry. Enjoy a glass of wine by the brook. Take in the gorgeous mountain views. Get drawn in from the beauty of the night sky. Get lost in nature. We have forgotten what rocks, plants, and animals still know. We have forgotten how to be -- to be still, to be ourselves, to be where life is: Here and Now. ~Eckhart Tolle The cottage does not have cell service or television. It does have wifi for streaming on your device and wifi calling. Lots of cd's (we still like them), a cpl of board games, cards, a bunch of books, portable dvd player. Heated kitchen floor and hot water on demand. Enjoy the private front yard, BBQ and fire pit. The area boast skiing ( Hunter Mt. 11 miles up the road), hiking, cycling, swimming holes, fishing, tubing, kayaking, zip line, yoga, mini golf, horseback riding, antiquing, great shops, library, live music, festivals, bird watching, star gazing, town hopping, world class spas, Buddhist temples, art galleries, museums, farm stands, breweries, great restaurants....for every budget. Please see my guide book for area recommendations.

  • Loved this place. We fell asleep and woke up to the sound of the creek that runs along side it. There's a fire pit and lawn chairs that we used every night to read alongside and roast marshmallows. The place is extremely well equipped and even tidier and cozier than the photos suggest. Elizabeth lives in the main house right behind the cabin but there is a wall that divides so it still feels very private. She was lovely, came and greeted us and made helpful suggestions. The cabin is located in Chichester with the closest town being Phoenicia which is extremely sleepy, has one mini main strip and a diner that we were excited to try but apparently is only open seasonally. It's a great location for lounging and reading books. There's plenty of hiking and fishing nearby as well. If you're looking for a hopping downtown then this might not be your place but we made our way to Tannersville nearby which was a bit livelier and close to falls we hiked around. Hunter is also nearby and Woodstock, about 30 mins. That said, we were there in an off season so perhaps it picks up in season. Great stay, highly recommended. Hope to return soon!!

  • The cottage is as advertised. It is a lovely little cottage with everything you need. Elizabeth provided many things which are otherwise not common, even some food, wine and fire wood! We liked it a lot.

  • Liz was an amazing host! The cottage was even more picturesque than we imagined, and everything was perfect. A gorgeous stream flows right past the cottage, and windows throughout the cottage frame it gorgeously. The space was cozy and cute, and there were amenities galore (think: several different shampoos/conditioners, face washes, pantry staples, extra pillows and blankets...). We truly appreciated (and utilized) the guides she left to local attractions! Her heated floors and fake-fireplace space heaters were exactly the right amount of heat for our mid-March stay. I was skeptical (it's 2018!), but there is no cell service in the area; Liz has wifi which enables you to utilize any wifi enabled devices. (Remember to screenshot a map of your directions before you venture out!) She also has a CD player and an extensive CD collection, which was a nice way to have some ambiance without a screen. This is an amazing getaway for anyone looking to disconnect from the world and bring some peace and serenity into their lives. I would absolutely recommend Liz's cottage.

  • This is perfect for a nice summery escape in the Catskills! We had such a great time grilling and dining outside, Elizabeth had prepared the place with outstanding care, we had a bottle of wine waiting for us and lovely treats! The fact that the kitchen has so many appliances, sauces, and staples also made it very easy for us to make delicious meals buying local produce, and it made our time there super convivial. Elizabeth is a great host, she checked in a few times and chatted to see if we needed anything without ever being overbearing, so this was a great balance of privacy and care! I definitely recommend Elizabeth's cottage, it's so close to great hikes and the area is peaceful and lovely with the little creek!

  • Elizabeth is thoughtful, communicative and helpful! A perfect stay for our family - Elizabeth even brought out some toys from her daughter so that our 16 month old could use them. We had a wonderful time barbecuing, star gazing, swimming hole hopping and relaxing. Hope to be back in the future!

  • Lovely cottage in the Catskill mountains. The two bedroom offered plenty of space for two weary hikers. Liz kindly provided cookware and some extra food as well. The place was very clean and comfortable. Thank you!

  • Great cottage! Scenic location! Quiet and relaxing!

  • Elizabeth's cabin was wonderful -- extremely clean, cozy, and stylish. The surroundings were beautiful and calm, and Elizabeth was very responsive and accommodating. I would love to return soon.

Please read our description thoroughly before booking. Our Hickory Hut is a new, cozy, one-room cabin, perfect for one or two only, under towering shag-bark hickory trees, with a queen-size bed, very basic kitchen, and comfy outdoor shower/sink and compost toilet. Cook outside, relax in the hammock, meditate in the tree house, get back to nature.
Enter the gateway and stroll the path into an enchanted grove where the beauty of nature will rejuvenate you. Ancient shag-bark hickories tower above you, sunlight dapples the ground, birds sing, chipmunks frolic. The Hickory Hut is new construction, 12 x 12 feet, that provides a clean and lovely shelter for two adults. With leafy window views on all sides you'll feel embraced by the forest. The queen-size bed is super comfortable and a small table provides space for writing or dining when the weather prevents outdoor living. The inside kitchen area has no plumbing, but does have essentials like a jug of water for drinking, a mini-fridge, a single electric burner, and a French press for coffee. Bedding and towels are provided. For extra cool nights, additional blankets are available. The cabin is equipped with a small room heater that will helps take the chilly edge off on mid Oct. evenings. Follow a short path outside to a private shower and sink with warm water, plus an eco-friendly composting toilet, all under a translucent cover that gives the feeling of open sky. Also outdoors is a small wood-fired brick stove, a table and chairs, a hammock, and a raised platform for yoga or meditation. We provide utensils and cookware. Also, a small hibachi grill is available, which you're welcome to use if you bring your own charcoal. The essentials are all here for you to experience a peaceful, natural outdoor retreat. While no open fire is allowed at your site, we do have a fire pit in our yard which you are welcome to use if you ask us first. Other guests are nearby, but are not going to enter your area. You'll have plenty of privacy indoors and out. The Hickory Hut is closed during the winter.
We're in an ideal location, 8 miles from the center of Woodstock, 6 from Phoenicia, and just 1.5 from Boiceville, where there's a grocery store, pharmacy, and liquor store. Woodstock and Phoenicia are both delightfully cultured but funky small towns, each with its own distinct flavor and history, resulting from the mix of New York City energy with the spirit and beauty of the fields and mountains. In addition to being in the Catskill Forest Preserve, we're close to several spiritual retreat centers, such as the Zen Mountain Monastery, KTD Tibetan Monastery, Matagiri, and Menla Mountain Retreat. Several yoga studios are within an easy drive. High quality art, music, and literary events abound, and we're surrounded by the recreational opportunities of the Catskills: fishing, hunting, biking, swimming, hiking, mountain biking and kayaking. If you're a hiker, you may want to take a short walk from our place through the woods to the Catskill Interpretive Center, a great resource for regional maps and hiking information.
  • The cabin was perfect for a relaxing weeekend in the woods with my girlfriend. Very clean and simple, just what we were looking for.

  • The "Hickory Hut" was even more beautiful than we imagined and our overall stay was just perfect. Wendy and Brent were warm and welcoming, striking the perfect balance of giving us our privacy and space, and being perfectly accommodating and helpful. The cabin had everything we needed and it was clear that Wendy put great thought into making sure her "guests" have a comfortable stay. The location is ideal, with short drives to Phoenicia and Woodstock, and easy access to numerous trailheads and attractions in the area (including the very helpful Catskills Interpretive Center). We hope to return again!

    Lily2016-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was exceptional. Wendy and Brent are incredibly thoughtful from every detail they go above and beyond in providing us the best time. We highly recommend this place as it's a quiet and peaceful environment, great for running away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Wendy takes very good care of the place using only eco-friendly products from shampoo to dish soap. They are so great that convinced me to use them back home as well! "Thanks for the tip Wendy!" Well once again we had a great time, one of the best place and host I've ever had the pleasure to meet.

    Kenia 2017-04-30T00:00:00Z
  • Wendy and Brent were friendly, accommodating, and accessible. the place was very quiet, serene, and a wonderful place for quiet reflection near nature. Would definitely stay here again!

  • It's a good place, but went with a wrong person, so it's really a bad memory to me. The cabin is clean and cute, but a little bit small for me. Woodstock is a really great place to visit, and if u like hiking, overlook mountain trail is a must! Thanks for taking good care of us!

    Huizhong2016-06-17T00:00:00Z
  • Wendy and Brent were great hosts, and we really enjoyed our weekend at the Hickory Hut. Great, quiet, secluded location with a well-appointed cabin and rustic outdoor-shower/composting toilet setup. It had the feel of camping with all the comfort and convenience of home. We would definitely stay there again!

    Jeffrey2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • We have visited this cabin in each season and every time we do we have a great time. The hosts are very friendly and in tune to their guests if it’s privacy you want you got it, if you are looking to chat and get info on things to do Brent and Wendy are at your service. The cabin offers a great space to get away from the rush of modern life. Thanks again.

    Robert2017-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • Wendy & Brent were excellent hosts. We were the first guests in their newly minted cabin and had a wonderful escape from NYC. The cabin was all we had hoped it would be and more. The outdoor shower was refreshing after long hikes in the mountain area. It's a completely peaceful retreat, removed all material possessions and woke up to the natural alarm clock of chirping birds. Wendy's vision for the cabin worked perfectly and will be looking forward to another relaxing weekend away with the hosts. They had coffee in the room for us and we were greeted with freshly brewed iced tea because my partner said she prefers that over coffee. Perfect to drink in a hammock before breakfast on the rocket stove. Thanks for taking us in for the weekend and being your first guests in the cabin. Marc & Deana

  • We stayed at the Little Red Cabin over Thanksgiving weekend and had a fabulous time! We took the Trailways bus from NYC to Phoenicia, and walked to the cabin in under 10 minutes. The cabin felt like home away from home, furnished with the essential household necessities. Although a cozy cabin, there's plenty of space to move around, relax, play board games or read a book. Rachel was always instantly available whenever we had any questions, even over the holiday, and let us experience a stay without interruptions. We would definitely stay here again and have recommended it to many of our friends.

    Malena2013-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel’s place was so lovely! We had a great time. Rachel’s notes and recommendations were very helpful, and we loved exploring the area and her cabin. It was so rustic and cute and roomy—an actual stream right next to the cabin. And our dog LOVED the yard (something we don’t have in the city). Highly recommend the Overlook Mountain Trail and the Tanbark Trail, both in the area (one actually walking distance!). Sweet Sue’s was also amazing for breakfast, and so was Peekamoose (7-8 miles away). Would highly recommend Rachel’s place if you want a romantic getaway (with your dog!). ☺

    Julie2014-05-20T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel was a wonderful host! She was extremely responsive and very accommodating to our requests. She was flexible and helpful with recommendations for places to eat and things to do in the area. We never would have thought to go to the super awesome Peekamoose restaurant if she hadn't mentioned it in her welcome note. The cabin was adorable and super quirky. The decor was fun and the layout was really cool. We really enjoyed the secluded and remote feeling of the place while actually being only like a 2 minute walk across a bridge into the main strip of Phoenicia. All in all we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend Rachel and her little red cabin.

    Susan2014-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very nice stay in the cabin. It is convenient to town and yet still gives a feeling of privacy and solitude. The wifi worked great. It was a pleasure to sit out on the deck and watch the hummingbirds. Although it is a single room cabin, there is plenty of space for a couple and no feeling of being cramped. Phonecia is well located for exploring trips around region and has a couple of good places to eat as well.

    William2011-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Rachel's Little Red Cabin. It is such a charming place. It has a real feel of a writer's cabin. It is very close to town yet secluded among the trees so one get the best of both worlds. Thank you Rachel for this experience.

  • This cabin is soooo close to the town of Phoenicia and we had a great time. The fenced in yard is wonderful!! Our dog loved it and being from the city we enjoyed letting our dog out whenever she wanted. Rachel was very responsive and helpful. We would book again in a heartbeat! Thank you Rachel for sharing your cabin with us!

    Britney2016-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel and her Little Red Cabin where great! Phoenicia is the perfect little town to get away from it all, but still have access to great food, drinks and shops. Although the cabin is very comfy, most of my time was spent on the porch grilling and listening to the peaceful sound of the running streams and creek. Rachel leaves you all the info you need for local restaurants, biking, tubing, hiking, etc... Everything is walking distance, so no need for a car, just jump on the bus. I can't wait to go back!

Stylish home in a great location with lots of amenities. (Pool Closed from 9/25-5/15
Amazing Zen Retreat Home in the Mountains near Woodstock NY "Be still like the rock in the stream, let everything flow around and past you" and that is how you will feel in this house. In a fertile, protected river valley only 2 hrs from NY this home is in the shadow of some of the higher peaks in NY. Surrounded by mountains whose rock built cities and on a stream which feeds the NYC water supply you will feel and surrender to the power of nature and the abundance of wildlife. There is nothing to do here as nature is taking care of everything. Guests have all told me of the wonderful restorative power of the area so prepare to get very little work from the civilized world done here. There are 2 nice sized bedrooms each with a Queen Bed with a sleeping Loft and comfy couch which Sleeps 6-7 and bathroom, kitchen dining room living room. There is a fireplace that is best for duraflame logs. Please note that the mountain well water has a naturally occuring sulphur odor, the water safe to drink but the water pressure is a bit Appalachian. All amenities including internet, cell phone, d/w, ac, downstairs there is an exercise room and 1/2 bath and laundry and garage. There is an above ground pool off the deck in the back. I am a Yoga Instructor/Author and my dog Bogey is a pet Therapy dog so the house has some good chill energy. The park like property is divided by a quiet country lane with the loveliest cottages and nature to admire if you care for a quiet stroll down the block you can get the heart rate going as you ascend a 400 foot elevation gain up the base of Mt Tremper and probably see one of our resident bears along the way. The 1.5 Acre property is divided up with 1/2 around the house are well manicured and park like, private, and with a view of the mountains and the streambed. On the other side of the road is the remaing 3/4 acre which I call Yoga Beach, Zen Beach, Zen Falls and Sycamore Island. Yoga Beach is some chairs I arranged on the side of the streambed. This area gets a shaded sun and is great for Yoga or meditation. Take a few steps down to the stream bed and follow the path of rocks out to Zen Beach. Lawn chairs are provided for your use. You can swim is the stream but please honor the fact that the stream is part of the NYC watershed and follow all rules regarding fishing licensing. Cross over onto Sycamore Island and lovely island created by the Beaverkill separating and rejoining. You can't go anywhere on the property without hearing the rush of water that is draining from the pristine and protected mountains that feeds the NYC watershed. You also have wonderful water-views in LR and MBR. This home also borders the Zen Mountain Monastery. The property sits within the southern bowl of Tremper Mountain, near the juncture of two of upstate New York's finest waterways, the Beaverkill and Esopus rivers. According to the ancient Chinese art of geomancy, this specific site—at the confluence of two rivers, with a mountain to the north—is an auspicious place for spiritual practice and renewal. A Baesan-imsu site is defined as "A lower altitude location backed by an auspicious mountain to the north and facing a river/stream running laterally across its southern border. This is an ideal location for habitation, where life will be prosperous and hereos, great scholars, religious, political leaders and defenders of the nation can be easily raised and educated". In the summer there is swimming and tubing, in fall we are treated to beautiful colors, the winter offers skiing in nearby Bellyare and Hunter (20min). Spring rewards us with brilliant blossoms. Summer with a connection to the water Directions: Car: NYS Thruway to exit 19 to 28 West Pine Hill. Stay on 28 for about 20 miles you’ll see a sign for Mt Tremper Rte 212 and Zen Mtn Monastery after a farm stand. Make right ½ mile Left onto Plank Rd (Follow sign to Zen Mtn) Go over the bridge, make the first right onto Miller. Address is 25 Miller Rd Mt Tremper, NY 12457. (2 hrs 15 min from UWS) Bus: The Adirondack Trailways bus goes from NYC's Port Authority right to Mount Tremper (an unlisted stop between Woodstock and Phoenicia). (URL HIDDEN) Ask the bus driver to drop you off in Mount Tremper (sometimes its called the "4 Corners" stop). This will leave you right at a small bridge over a river. Beyond the bridge you will see a sign for Zen Mountain Monastery. Go down the road towards the monastery make the first right over the bridge the house is the second house on the left #25. Pics: See attached of house, stream, backyard, inside and hood Budget Travel Mag Sept 2011 Issue: About 20 minutes from Woodstock, Phoenicia and the adjacent hamlet of Mt. Tremper are whimsical and movie-set quaint, with a sense of time suspended. It’s impossible to walk or drive anywhere here without hitting stunning Esopus Creek and mountain views. It’s rugged all right, with the scent of campfires in the air, the romantic whistles of real trains, coyotes howling at night, and if you forget to lock your door, you might come back from a walk to see a black bear grazing through your fridge. You can also find cappuccinos and cool vintage clothing stores, and one of the area’s hottest art scenes plus more year-round sports than you can shake a ski pole at, from tubing down the Esopus to fishing, hiking, biking, and motorcycling. The tight community has a global conscience; the innate charms of the area, along with the social networking of the proud residents—reaching out to friends around the world—is how Phoenicia—(technically a hamlet of Shandaken)—with only 400 full-time residents, was able to merit sixth place out of potentially thousands, in Budget Travel magazine’s online poll of “America’s Coolest Small Towns.” Phoenicia will be among the top 10 towns featured in the mag’s September issue. Where to Shop Main Street, Phoenicia is the place! For such a diverse range of items, you feel an instant sense of harmony and integration at Tender Land Home. There’s an effortless quality to owner Dave Pillard’s Zen-meets-rustic sense of presentation, and each item beckons with its own tactile siren call—from delicate hand-crafted and locally inspired ceramic pieces, to regional picture books, summer silk scarves, and wry, just-shy-of-whimsical items. You’ll find one-of-a-kind vintage items and fine tailoring and upholstery at Threads of Time and flip your pageboy at the vintage intensity of the Mystery Shop, the baby of rock `n’ roll photographer and illustrator Laura Levine. She also hosts beautiful little free porch concerts throughout the summer, featuring artists like Tommy Ramone and Ambrosia Parsley Reading matters! Find good vacay reads at the Nest Egg, an old-fashioned country store where you can buy moccasins and cedarwood chests, slingshots, and penny candy. (“Try the walnut-chocolate handmade fudge, girls, and you’ll never need a boyfriend again,” one customer recently commented.) This place smells like your childhood should have. For serious schmoozers, pull up a vintage comic or barely used book and gab as long as you like at the Bohemian-flavored 60 Main Street, which offers books and silk scarves, and clothing designed by the owner, as well as jewelry and togs by hot local designers. (The locally designed Karina dresses are affordable, make every body type look chic, and are totally versatile: Michelle Obama owns two.) Three charmingly frozen-in-time spots are the Phoenicia Pharmacy (’40s-era music, sun-faded cards and old-timey items); Morne’s Imports (every bit of gear you need for your sports addiction, hunting, fishing, and camping, as well as plumbing, Sunday papers, and bus tickets), and Debra-Jo’s Unisex hairstyling—and the Ice Cream Station, my favorite soft ice cream in the universe. What to Eat Try the eggplant parm at Tiso’s in Mt. Tremper, with Sinatra playing and homemade good Italian food. Expect sophisticated dinners and a great bar at Ricciardella’s on Main Street in Phoenicia. There’s a nice grilled cheese and tomato sandwich and a relaxed atmosphere waiting for you at Russ’ Country Kitchen at Phoenicia Plaza on Route 28. Brio’s Pizzeria and Restaurant and the adjacent Sportsman’s Alamo Cantina Tex-Mex Bar & Grill both have outdoor seating and are two of the big draws (besides the gorgeous and curvy mountain rides) to hordes of weekend bikers. Mama’s Boy Café & Espresso Bar is the new kid on the block and is superrelaxed and invitingly urbane without trying. Mama’s Boy offers Wi-Fi, an outdoor deck, cappuccinos, baked goods, ice cream, and a selection of fare for breakfast, light lunch or dinner. I recommend the scrambled tofu with Spinach at Sunfrost in Woodstock. Sunfrost has a great breakfast lunch and is very resonably priced. For dinner try the Miso Salmon at Yum Yum's a great evening restaurant with outdoor seating and great food and great prices. Spirit Zen Mountain Monastery founded by John Daido Loori, Roshi, and is one of the most respected Zen monasteries in the West. They provide lay practice, as well as environmental studies, full-time residencies, and retreats in intensive Zen training to Aikido, Zen visual arts, and healing workshops. Sunday morning sessions are open to everyone. Operated by Tibet House, and visited by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Menla Mountain Retreat, a center for health and happiness, with the Mahasuka spa, is situated in Woodland Valley, on one of Phoencia’s prettiest roads. It offers a number of uplifting programs and workshops, as well as miles of hiking and swimming. Richard Freeman, Robert Thurman, and John Campbell will present “Buddha & the Yogis” June 6-12. In Woodstock there is the Tibetan Temple across from the Overlook Mountain trail. You can take the vigorous hike up the 3700 foot mountain for views of the Hudson valley, river and Berkshires and when you come down from the mountain you can visit the KTD Monastery and meditate and rest your tired muscles. There was a recent article in the Times on how China is supporting the leadership of this temple in naming the next Dalai Lama. Entertainment & the Arts Events you want to plan around include The Shandaken Art Studio Tour, featuring more than 40 studios, gala openings, and special exhibitions in and around Phoenicia (July 16-17); The annual Rotary Rubber Duck Race (usually in August); and the Festival of the Voice, with everything from opera in the park to gospel and world music. The festival opens the evening of Friday, August 13, running through Sunday the 15th. This year’s main attraction is Elizabeth Futral, one of the world’s leading lyric, coloratura sopranos. You can watch real movies—like Nosferatu, or Woody Allen faves—and live plays and musicals (“Into the Woods” is now in production for a June run) at the town’s charming theater, the Shandaken Theatrical Society, housed in a building that is seriously circa 1887. Mount Tremper Arts offers artist residencies and top-quality solo and ensemble dance and music performances, as well as visual art exhibitions. Their summer arts festival runs July 9 through August 21, featuring performances by Tere O’Connor, Melinda Ring, Brian Rogers, the International Contemporary Ensemble, and Young Jean Lee, as well as visual artists. The pioneers in the ever-evolving Phoenicia/Mt. Tremper arts scene were members of an artists’ cooperative who launched Arts Upstairs. Their monthly shows pack six rooms with local art and the art openings are big local social events, often coinciding with other openings around town, for an art block party atmosphere. Every aspect of Wendy Drolma’s masks—featured in her studio/store on the boardwalk—are elegantly and wickedly handcrafted. If you’re going to a Venetian ball or just want something dark and gorgeous to commemorate your Phoenicia experience—no one leaves this place without being transformed—make it a stop. If you want to go skin-deep, hit Skinflower Cosmic Arts, with resident tattoo artist Sunday Dawne-Marie. A delicate raven and a girl with feet of tree roots, a vivid samurai fighting lurid deities—these are just some of Dawne-Marie’s original designs that make her place pop. Ride with the rushing tide when you get geared up for a tubing adventure, guaranteed to cool you off even in an epic heat wave. There are several places in town; Town Tinker Tube Rental offers a kayaking package and group discounts on the whole exhilarating tubing experience, outfitting you up in everything from wetsuits to tubes. If you’d rather hop a train, check out Phoenicia’s rich history at the Empire State Railway Museum and get on board for a leisurely ride through the Catskills. For films try the Upstate Films in Woodstock and good concerts at the Bearsville Theatre. Great Chinese restaurant is also located at the Bearsville Theatre. Nature & Hikes Poke around for your favorite fishing hole (we won’t tell) and for hikers, there’s a big hike (Mt. Tremper Trailhead on Old Plank Road) and a satisying 20-minute hike tucked behind the post office at the far end of the park off Ave Maria, which will reward you with breathtaking views without leaving you breathless. This is called the Tanbark Trail and the elevation gain is only 500 ft so most can do this one. Overlook trail in Woodstock is more demanding at 1300 elevation gain this 3 hr r/t hike awards you with spectacular views of the Hudson Valley and a chance to visit KTD Monastery across the street. Bring plenty of water. If you’re staying a bit and love animals, perhaps you can spend some time feeding a baby squirrel or wild bird, rescued by the efforts of one lovely woman on a quiet street, animal rehabber Joanne Rowley. The Byrdcliffe Colony, also called the Byrdliffe Arts Colony or Byrdcliffe Historic District, was founded by Jane and Ralph Whitehead and colleagues, Bolton Brown (artist) and Hervey White (writer). The Arts and Crafts Movement arose in the late nineteenth century in reaction to the dehumanizing monotony and standardization of industrial production. It was created as an experiment in utopian living inspired by the arts and crafts movement. It remains focused on the development of artistic vision. "Beneath the gentle slopes of Overlook Mountain lies the town of Woodstock, a thriving community of painters, musicians and craftsmen. The town's early history of wintry hardships, courageous settlers and rebellious farmers sets the stage for a saga of spirited and creative personalities. As this energetic individualism carried over into the twentieth century, the sounds of cow horns and tin pails gave way to the bacchanalian revelry of Maverick music festivals and the wailing guitar of Bob Dylan. The first hippie came to town in 1963, and within a few years this Colony of the Arts was swept up by the counterculture movement of the 60s." Wikipedia: Mt Tremper Among the cultural attractions in the area is Mount Tremper Arts, a non-profit organization that supports contemporary artists in the creation and presentation of new works of art. Founded by photographer Mathew Pokoik and choreographer Aynsley Vandenbroucke, MTA features performances, exhibitions, artist residencies, educational programming, and informal gatherings. Mount Tremper is also the site of Zen Mountain Monastery, the main house of the Mountains and Rivers order of Zen Buddhism, founded by John Daido Loori, Roshi. Among the businesses located in or near Mount Tremper is Kate's Lazy Meadow, a motel owned by Kate Pierson, one of the founding members of The B-52s. Another prominent and famous attraction is the “Kaatskill Kaleidoscope”, the world’s largest kaleidoscope, measuring 60 feet (18m) tall. It is mounted inside a converted grain silo Mount Tremper, officially known as Tremper Mountain and originally called Timothyberg, is one of the Catskill Mountains in the U.S. state of New York. It is located near the hamlet of Phoenicia, in the valley of Esopus Creek. At 2,740 feet (840 m) in elevation, it is well below the higher peaks of the region. Its slopes were a source of two major local products during the 19th century: hemlock bark, a source of tannin, and bluestone used in construction. Later it was the site of Tremper House, one of the Catskills' earliest railroad resorts. Henry Ward Beecher and Oscar Wilde were among the guests there. In the 20th century it was acquired by the state and became part of the Catskill Park Forest Preserve. Its location in the Esopus Valley between the northern and southern Catskills made it an ideal place for a fire lookout tower, which still stands on the mountain's summit. The Mount Tremper Fire Observation Station has been restored and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hikers often follow[2] the old road to it from Phoenicia, also a section of the Long Path long-distance trail, to enjoy the views from the tower. Geography Tremper is a sprawling mountain at the south end of a range of low-elevation peaks between Warners Creek and Silver Hollow on the north, Stony Clove Creek on the west, Esopus Creek on the southwest and the Beaver Kill on the southeast. The latter three are closely paralleled by state highways 214, 28 and 212. Its summit dominates the view from westbound Route 28 at the small hamlet of Mount Tremper.[1] The mountain's lower slopes are gentle, becoming steep around 2,200 feet (670 m) and then leveling off again at the summit ridge. Unnamed tributaries of the surrounding creeks run down narrow valleys on the mountain's slopes. The summit ridge continues northeast to an unnamed summit and then Carl Mountain, both higher than Tremper at 2,820 feet (860 m) and 2,880 feet (880 m) respectively.[1] Map of Mount Tremper showing trails in their blaze colors and other facilities on mountain Most of the mountain is within the Town of Shandaken, whose largest population center, the hamlet of Phoenicia, is at the southwest foot of the mountain. Another smaller settlement named after the mountain is to its south. A small portion of the mountain's lowest eastern slopes is within Woodstock.[1] Most of the land on the mountain is part of the Phoenicia Wild Forest management unit of New York's Forest Preserve, part of the Catskill Park. The rest, including most of the slower slopes, is privately owned.[3] The public land is managed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).[4] Geology Like the Catskills as a whole, a dissected plateau, Tremper was formed not through the upthrust of rock layers but by the gradual erosion of stream valleys in an uplifted region about 350 mya. Its rock layers and bedrock are primarily Devonian and Silurian shale and sandstone.[5] Bluestone is present in enough quantity that a quarry was once located on the south side of the mountain at an elevation of 1,495 feet (456 m). Its remains are still visible today from the old road to the fire tower, which passes it.[6] Flora and fauna Because of its low elevation, the forests on Mount Tremper are dominated by a forest type referred to in the Catskills as southern hardwoods.[7] This is dominated by oak, hickory and pine species, with some basswood and poplar scattered in lower elevations. Chestnut were once common as well, but most died off in the blight of the early 20th century. Some Eastern hemlocks, once more widespread before they were harvested for their tannin-rich bark, remain, primarily higher on the mountain where the barkpeelers never reached. The summit ridge has some areas of the northern hardwood forest (beech, birch and maple) more common on higher Catskill slopes.[6] The more shade-tolerant northern hardwoods are slowly invading the southern hardwoods as an understory; due to the cessation of human intervention in the forest they will eventually displace the southern hardwoods.[7] Tremper has a typical assortment of animal life for the Catskills. Herbivores such as white-tailed deer, chipmunks and porcupines dominate the lower end of the food chain, with predators like fishers and black bear at the top. The ledges in the former quarry are one of the few rattlesnake habitats in the Catskills close to a hiking trail, with at least one confirmed den,[8] and visitors should exercise caution if they wish to explore it.[2][9] History Tremper's human history has two stages. For the century after the area's first settlement it was primarily an economic resource, sustaining several industries. Since the end of that period it has become a recreational resource. (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN): Barkpeeling, quarrying and hotels The mountain was first known as Timothyberg, in the vernacular of the early Dutch settlers of the Catskills. The area was first settled in the 1780s. Its location near the creeks and valleys made it ideal for barkpeeling, the first major industry of the Catskills. Bark from the many Eastern hemlocks on its slopes was a rich source of tannin, and leather hides were often brought to the region to be tanned. The creek valley made it possible to easily transport them to and from the Hudson River at Kingston to the east, and the later development of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad (UDRR) made it even easier. The road up the south side of the mountain, which forest historian Michael Kudish calls the best example of an extant bark road in the Catskills, was built for this purpose. By the end of the century, since a synthetic process for creating tannin had made it less necessary to harvest large acres of forest, it was being used for quarrying instead.[6] The railroad made another industry possible at that time. In 1879, after hotelier Jacob Tremper opened the Tremper House, a resort on its slopes near Phoenicia, that part of the mountain became known by his name,[10] He invited a number of prominent clergymen of the time to its dedication. Henry Ward Beecher, the main speaker, asked for God's blessing on the location and predicted a prosperous future.[11] Another celebrity guest, Oscar Wilde, shocked the region during a lecture at the Tremper House in 1882 when he proclaimed its location at the foot of the mountain aesthetically preferable to those of hotels such as the Catskill Mountain House located on mountaintops since in valleys, "there the picturesque and beautiful is ever before you".[12] It remained in business until 1904, when the town, under pressure from UDRR magnate Samuel Coykendall, who owned several competing resorts, rescinded permission for it to become a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. Coykendall, and other hoteliers in the region, alleged that tourists would avoid the region if those patients were present anywhere within it.[13] The vacant hotel buned down four years later, in 1908, and was never rebuilt.[6] A decade earlier, the legislation that created the state's Forest Preserve, with its "forever wild" clause, had been added to the state constitution. The state acquired Tremper's summit and some of the other land on its eastern slope in 1901, and established a plantation there for reforestation.[10] A mix of eastern white pine, Norway spruce and Scots pine were planted. Unusually for the Catskills, the underlying land was not former pasture but forest that had been cut and burned repeatedly by barkpeelers. It did not establish itself although the land eventually reforested on its own.[6] 1900–present: Hiking destination The former fire tower The Timothyberg side of the mountain was regularly burned over by blueberry pickers every year through 1916, the year the state built the 47-foot (14 m) fire lookout tower on the mountain and extended the old board road to make it accessible for observers coming by vehicle. It replaced another tower that had briefly stood on Slide Mountain, the Catskills' highest peak, a few years earlier. Tremper was chosen since it offered views of the lowlands that could not be seen so easily from the fire towers on Hunter and Belleayre mountain Bruce's Essay Channeling Emerson on Overlook Mtn: In the woods, we commune with our higher creative self. Within these forests of nature, I feel connected and in unity with the universe. Negotiating the rocks with conscious footwork, I begin my ascent. Not thinking of the end of the journey I am enjoying each moment of this dance. As I ascend I breathe deeply, my lungs are bathed by the purified air focusing on the journey. I am present with each step connecting to the earth. My thoughts start to quiet as I am uplifted into the infinite, all egotism vanishes. I am not separate but connected and the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me and I realize I am a co-creator of this magnificent creation. In the wilderness, I find I am the lover of unbounded and eternal beauty of nature. In the tranquil landscape, and especially in the distant line of the Hudson River illuminated in the Hudson Valley as the late afternoon sun shines on the water’s surface, I see my own nature. I see my thoughts drift bye like the clouds that skirt the mountaintops. I let go of the ego mind that replays past drama, obsesses about failings, plans future conquests and I am at once present and all my senses are magnified. As my mind quiets all I can hear is the rustle of the leaves as I step on the ground, the breath as it flows into my nostrils and out again and the beating of my heart. I reach out a touch a tree, I hug my dog Bogey and look out at the picture perfect view and all is well with the world. I am grateful for the awareness that created this natural setting and I remember that I am a co-creator. Bruce Van Horn Thoreau from Walden: Sometimes in a summer morning I sat in my doorway from sunrise to noon, rapt in a revery, amidst the pines, hickories and sumachs, in undisturbed solitude and stillness while the birds sang around or flitted noiseless through the house, until by the sun falling on my west window or the noise of some traveller's wagon on a distant highway I was reminded of the lapse of time. I grew in those seasons like corn in the night, and they were far better than any work of the hands would have been. They were not time subtracted from life, but so much over and above my usual allowance. I realized what the Orientals mean by contemplation and forsaking of works. My days were not days of the week bearing a stamp, nor were they minced into hours fretted by the ticking of a clock. I lived like the Puri Indians who only have one word for yesterday, today and tommorow, the eternal present. It was the summer of 1883, when Oscar Wilde came here. The celebrated 27-year-old poet and playwright was on his second trip to America, and second trip to the Catskills. The year before, the Dublin-born, London-based, spokesman for the Aesthete Movement had delivered a lecture on the Decorative Arts at the Hotel Katterskill, up on the Pine Orchard, above Haines Falls. “Life had to be lived intensely, with an ideal of beauty,” was the core ideal of Aestheticism, an artistic and literary movement, mostly of the young, that valued beauty of form and manner – “art for art’s sake” – and rejected any idea of social, political, or moral utility for art and literature. The aesthetes were the rebellious young of their day. Intense commitment to beauty was expressed, yes, in finely-crafted poems, insightful plays, and witty lyrics, but also in luxurious clothes, sensuous interior design, and beautiful dishes. “I find it harder and harder every day to live up to my blue china,” Oscar Wilde was frequently quoted as saying. Wilde, early, became a major celebrity throughout the English-speaking world, celebrated for his caustic wit, charming manner, witty conversation, and utter disregard of the norms of a Victorian gentleman. His stay at the Tremper House was a coup for Hudson River steamboat owner and hotelier Jacob Tremper, who had opened the Tremper House five years earlier. The building of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad opened up the Esopus Valley to the resort business, a business that had once been exclusive to the Pine Orchard, the Mountaintop above Haines Falls, where the Catskill Mountain House was newly challenged by the Hotel Katterskill, built around the same time as Phoenicia’s Tremper House. The Tremper House was a gamble because it was situated at the base of the mountain rather than on its summit. This was a break with mountain-resort tradition, a tradition, then, only 60 years in the making. Ripe time to try something new, Jacob Tremper must have figured. See, the cool thing about Catskill Mountain resort history is that it all goes back to one place: the Catskill Mountain House. The Catskill Mountain House was built in 1824 on the precipice of the Catskill escarpment, on a cliff 2,000 feet about Palenville, overlooking the Hudson Valley. Renovations in the 1840s added a long open portico, facing the view, framed by 13 two-story Corinthian columns, open to the valley below. The Mountain House defined the mountain resort: high elevation, big view, long porch, elegant architectural details. So when George Harding built the 600-room Hotel Kaaterskill to compete with the Catskill Mountain House, he followed that formula, putting his hotel up on the top of South Mountain. The story went around that Mr. Harding built his challenge to the Mountain House over a dispute in the dining room. George Harding was a wealthy Philadelphia patent attorney fortunate enough to have represented Samuel F. B. Morse in securing the patent for the telegraph. (Wonder if he got a share of the profits?) The Harding family vacationed yearly at the Catskill Mountain House, so Mr. Harding thought reasonable his daughter’s request for fried chicken rather than the prime rib the dining room featured. “If you don’t like what we offer, why don’t you build your own hotel?” the owner of the Mountain House supposedly told him. So, Harding did. I think the coming of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad had more to do with George Harding’s investment in hotel building, than did the “Fried Chicken War” of local legend. The U & D built a branch through Stony Clove, connecting the main line at Phoenicia through Chichester and Tannersville to the Pine Orchard. The railroad would deliver vacationers to the Hotel Katterskill through the back door. The hotel’s long veranda, however, would still face the view. Getting Oscar Wilde to the Hotel Katterskill in 1882 was a big deal. A hotel is only as stylish and fashionable as is its clientele. Oscar Wilde’s lecture would draw a younger, hipper crowd, lend the place an air of refinement, give the new hotel a shot of the current, make it modern. At least that’s what George Harding hoped. Jacob Tremper was looking for the same thing when the fabulous Oscar Wilde visited his Phoenicia hotel those late-summer days of 1883. It was the height of the season, and the celebrated Anglo-Irish writer’s mere presence at the Tremper House meant fashion, style, and taste had come to the new resort along the railroad, so much easier to reach than the Pine Orchard, with an elegant veranda and a gentle walk to the village. By all reports, Oscar Wilde enjoyed his time in Phoenicia. After a couple of days, he took the train through Stoney Clove to the Catskill Mountain House. There, a young, stage-struck couple, teen-aged children of Mountain House regulars, suggested an amateur theatrical, a light musical they would write, a pair of 16-year-olds, if Mr. Wilde would help. Help he did, turning the Mountain House summer theatrical of 1883 into a “sparkling” entertainment – a gilded age Glee - remembered for decades.
  • Bruce is such a warm and helpful host. He and Bogey made us feel right at home. The house is clean and well furnished. The property is populated by many beautiful trees and plants so it's very secluded and the location couldn't have been more perfect. The calming river is just steps away and was a fun place to explore with our 5 year old. We didn't get to see any bears but every morning Bruce would come back from his hikes to give us an update on his sightings and where he saw them. The house is close to many good restaurants and grocery stores and also Woodstock and Phoenica so it's easy to do shopping, hikes, eating, tubing, relaxing and sightseeing. We would stay there again in a heartbeat. Thanks Bruce and Bogey for being such great hosts! You guys are awesome!

  • We had a wonderful stay at Bruce's cabin! The stream was beautiful and we had a blast hiking Overlook Mountain nearby!

  • This was our second stay at Bruce's home. Once again, it was a very relaxing and comfortable weekend. As much we enjoyed the pool and clean home, we really find the bunnies, robin's nest, and lightning bugs after sunset brought the most charm to our stay. We took a walk one morning and a very sweet neighbor stopped us and gave us a lovely antique plate as a souvenir. Really can't ask for more.

  • What a warm and inviting home. There is just something about the energy in this house that I can't describe. There is a spiritual warmth and openness I felt throughout. The views of the snow covered property and hills added to the serenity. I wish I didn't have to leave.

  • House was in a convenient location close to rte 28, but secluded and quiet. Great trails to walk around in the area and I can imagine sitting by the brook/ stream if it was a little warmer. The house was clean, spacious for 5 people and had a great use of space. Heat worked well in the cold weather we experienced, and the water was plenty hot in the shower. Only issue is the sulphur smell in the water, but we brought water and it wasn't a big issue. Water didn't taste bad, or leave a scent after showering, was just a little strong smelling. Would recommend house to anyone as a great central location to explore the area for hiking, skiing, or day-tripping around the Catskills.

  • Bruce's home is wonderful. We were so relaxed and had such a great time. We enjoyed the grill while relaxing on the deck and swimming in the pool. The nature surrounding his house is beautiful. We had adventures in the stream across the street and the secret garden in the backyard. This is the perfect escape if you are looking to relax and unwind. We had a very peaceful stay and we appreciate your lovely home. Thank you Bruce!

  • Everything was just as expected. House was clean, comfy, and plenty of room for our two families of 3. We didn't end up spending much time in the house, but when we were there the kids enjoyed the books and toys and we were all happy with our stay. Didn't have much correspondence with the host, but the initial reply regarding booking was quick and all the necessary information was included in the email we received before arrival.

Plenty of perfectly cut firewood outside to keep you toasty all night wether in the living room fireplace or in the outside fire pit. A quick walk down the hill and you can stuff your face with delicious pancakes at "Sweet Sue's". Tommy was a pleasure to deal with and we hope to visit this house again soon. Thanks!

Their home has a little trail that leads right into the middle of town, just a quick 15 minute stroll. House was spacious, heater was fast to heat the place (nights got chilly in those pretty fall hills), it had everything we needed. We recommend it if you're traveling with 5+ people, especially for the price!

  • Had a fantastic time at Li Mei's place in Poenicia. A group of four of us came up for some hiking and to get out of nyc for the weekend. Really easy to get to. It's a clean, comfortable house surrounded by the Catskill mountains with a great fireplace to relax in front of. Good location close to awesome hikes, restaraunts and more. Our favorite part was exploring kaaterskill falls and near north-south lake and then eating the fresh doughnuts at twin peaks (you should add this to your great list of recommendations Li Mei).

    Austin2016-05-02T00:00:00Z
  • Li Mei's home was perfect for an autumn weekend getaway. Conveniently located within walking distance to hikes, food, and the town of Phoenicia itself. The house had everything needed to be able to relax and not have to think about anything. Super cozy space!

    Echo2015-11-01T00:00:00Z
  • Li Mei is a phenomenal host. She sent us a PDF listing all her local Catskills favorites, so we knew where to buy coffee, where to shop for funky antiques, and where to dine in the evening. In addition, she was an excellent communicator throughout the entire process. The house itself is meticulously maintained, clean, welcoming, and chic. I adore it. It is close enough to Phoenicia town in case you are coming without a car, but I will note that it was great to have one, as there are many great hikes and restaurants within a 20 mile radius. I would absolutely rent here again; I feel welcomed and relaxed in Li Mei's beautiful home, and would recommend it to anyone who needs a break from the city.

  • Charming home, great location and fun times for our family. Highly recommend this lovely home for its proximity town while also offering the bucolic beauty of the Catskills. Host was very responsive and helpful throughout.

  • I stayed at Li's place with my friends this past weekend and it was wonderful- it is exactly what you see in the pictures and we didn't have any problems at all. I have been to Phoenicia many times and Li's place is in the perfect central spot. The classic Phoenicia go-to's for breakfast (Sweet Sue's and The Phoenicia Diner) are just a short distance from the house and towns like Woodstock and Tannersville are about a 25-35 min drive. Li sent me a PDF of her recommendations for food, activities, and other various things before our arrival. I have eaten at many of the restaurants that are on Li's list and I would also recommend any and all of them, especially Cucina in Woodstock! My friends and I also found the section on suggested hiking trails very useful. We spent our Saturday afternoon driving to Tannersville and hiking to the Kaaterskill Falls. The hike is about 1.5 miles uphill, but it is very doable and there is a beautiful waterfall at the top- I would highly recommend it, it was pretty awesome. Other than the hike, we spent most of our time eating and relaxing. It was really nice to be able to breathe in some fresh air and enjoy the stillness of Phoenicia and its surrounding towns. If that's what you're into, then this place is perfect. Furthermore, if you are looking for a central spot that is cozy and clean, then Li's place is a great pick.

  • The house is nice and cozy! Perfect location for active nature lovers - right in the middle of Catskills mountains and 30mins away from Kaaterskills Falls! Within walking distance you can get a meal and a nice ice-cream! House has everything essential for your stay and the host is very responsive!

  • Stefania's place wss perfect for hiking in the Catskills. It is small, but had everything we needed - and the bonus of feeding the goats and turkeys right next door! Stefania was a great host.

    Amy2017-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • The bungalow itself is great and the location is perfect for a stay in the Catskills. Phoenicia is a 5 minute walk away and has a few restaurants and basic groceries/convenience store. It's also not far from the main road so you have quick access to nearby towns, hiking, and attractions. The creek is beautiful and access is convenient from the property. Stefania's yard is also beautifully landscaped so it was nice to just sit out and enjoy while watching the turkeys and goats next door (and meeting the dogs). The bungalow has everything you need and was immaculately clean and just as pictured. The outdoor shower ended up being a highlight of the stay - great temperature and water pressure. Stefania was a great host. Very communicative and helpful and she had good suggestions on where to eat and things to do.

    Quentin2017-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I loved staying at Stefania’s cottage! The design of the cottage is phenomenal and the entire place is so cozy. It was the perfect place to spend our anniversary. Stefania was incredibly friendly and opened her home to us while we were there. When Stefania realized there was going to be trouble with the water (due to the cold weather that just swept in) she let us know right away and offered her own luxury (and I mean luxury!) bathroom any time we wanted. The communication and overall hospitality couldn’t have been better. Our puppy loved playing in the yard in front of the cottage, getting to run around with Stefania’s dogs, and getting to see goats for the first time! We loved taking some time in the morning to feed apples to the goats through the fence. It was a wonderful way to start the day. The shops and restaurants in Phoenicia are incredible close. And while we chose to drive everywhere, it would be easy enough to walk the entire visit and to be able to get to whatever you need. Stefania was also great about recommending places to go around town and is very knowledgeable, which made the whole weekend so easy. We had a really great time and would recommend this cottage to anyone!

    Katie2017-11-20T00:00:00Z
  • Stefania’s place is beautiful and a great getaway from the city in the heart of the Catskills. Pay attention to her directions (as opposed to (Hidden by Airbnb) Maps) because we had trouble finding it at night. Also be weary that a lot of the area does not have cell service, so prepare in advance. Make sure you check out the Phoenicia Diner and the Peekamoose for great eating options. The space is beautifully decorated and super comfortable. Would definitely come back again!

    Lucas2017-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • Great place and host

    Laura2017-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • Stefania’s property was absolutely stunning and she is a very thoughtful hostess. The house itself is a cozy, modern space with a beautiful aesthetic with a mix of vintage pieces in a minimalist room. The stream, just across the street down a well maintained path, is a serene spot that we spent hours enjoying. The cows are friendly and a fun addition. We highly recommend organic stale bread as a treat for them because it’s as much fun for you as it is delicious for them! It felt like we were on a cabin glamping trip. Highly recommended for a few days of R & R.

    Vic2018-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • Very much enjoyed our stay at Stefania's place in Phoenicia. The town is very charming and in close proximity to plenty of shopping and outdoor activities and restaurant options. My partner and I were the first guests to stay in this room - it is a single room detached home and is next to the main house. Very tastefully decorated (the host is an interior designer), and the bed is very comfortable. A glamping experience. Included an outdoor shower, and a dry toilet. Guests have access to a private spot next to the river, which we found to be a great amenity during our stay. Overall an enjoyable experience and Stefania was very accommodating!

    Julie2017-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • Stefanias place was great very clean and nicely decorated and close to town and hiking. she was a great and friendly hostess helping me figure out how to get back to the city and offered me a delicious dinner.

Ever travel without getting a sense of place? At our cabin, nestled on a hushed road in a stunning valley, the stream, forest, and mountains assert themselves. Every room embraces wildlife and echoes the sound of the stream tumbling over boulders. Nature resets your internal clock to downtime. A spacious kitchen, sweeping great room, and wildflower-bordered patio encourage conversation. 2 levels, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 living rooms invite contemplation. Doze, fish, shop, hike..repeat.
Relax at this cedar-and-stone cabin on dead-end street, surrounded by state land. The rushing Esopus creek tumbles around the bend behind the house. You hear it ALL the time, no matter where you are in the house. Interior stone walls and wood let nature in. Soaring ceilings frame the great room, lined with windows that open to the stream. Cozy library has stone fireplace, piano, striped couches, reading materials and board games. A well-equipped kitchen lets you be the chef, with all major and minor appliances, as well as a window seat and breakfast bar. TV for watching movies and Chromecast, stereo system you can plug into with zoned speakers, wireless internet, telephone. Downstairs: kitchen, bathroom with shower, library, great room. Convertible double bed in red couch in great room. Upstairs, 1 mezzanine/loft bedroom with 1 queen and 2 single beds (one is a convertible ottoman), 1 bedroom with 2 singles, and up a few steps, a bedroom with queen pillow top mattress in a treehouse-like setting. Full bath with tub/shower attachment. Outside, deck and patio with built-in grill, face the stream, and you can catch rays or enjoy the sunset/moonrise. If you're flexible on sleeping arrangements, you can fit in a good dozen people! Check out the bedroom configuration to know if this is the right setup for your group. Warnings: the stair risers are open, so kids (ours learned to walk on them) need supervision. One closet has some hanger space; the others are stocked with extra bedding. Sorry, no pets!
Scenic train rides, farmers' markets, u-picks, weekend tag sales, tons of hiking trails, tubing, fly fishing. Witness your NYC drinking water at its source by walking or boating the Pepacton and Ashokan Reservoirs. Big outdoor flea market in Arkville. Woodstock and Rhinebeck for shopping, Tannersville for antiques, Hunter and Belleayre ski mountain for concerts and gatherings. A few foodie recommendations from committed foodies: Amy's Takeaway (not me!) will stash pre-ordered, locally sourced, pure-food meals in the fridge. Peekamoose has crazy-quilt grouping of cocktail, white tablecloth, tavern, and deck spaces. In Phoenicia, hit Brio's to ground yourselves in small town feel, Bklyn-born Phoenicia Diner for local foods, Tavern 214 (our one meal there was cholesterol-driven, beware!). Bread Alone for the miche (baguette is ho-hum) and soups/sandwiches.
  • Amy managed to convey a sense of how important her home is to her while also extending her hospitality and trust with a rare sense of pride without ego. I was hesitant about the whole AirBnB rthing, but the very first response from Amy (within an hour or writing her) made me extremely eager to book. She made me feel welcome, trusted, and not alone. All of my questions were answered in a timely and polite manner, including a gentle reminder that all of my questions were answered in the "house rules" doc that I already had. (Sorry, Amy! I really thought that I had read the whole thing!) A sense of humor and excellent taste in decorating for comfort, I am exceedingly happy with the experience in this home, from the communication to the actual time spent there. The murmur of the creek, although half-buried in snow, the birds, the total solitude - it really was the perfect few days away from the intensely busy job and NYC life. I never put a movie in the TV and never once missed cable. The home is decorated with good furniture, it's bright and sunny, and it's the perfect combo of modern conveniences and off-the-gridness (yay for espresso machines and no cable!!) This is a plus. I spent more than a few hours sitting in the large room, watching the sun pass by and listening to the creek babble. It was beyond great. I read, and sat by the fireplace, and drove to Woodstock, I bought a local vineyard's offerings (really, really good wine) and enjoyed myself thoroughly. The kitchen is close to Nirvana, a big stovetop, clean wooden counters, a ready supply of admirable knives, plenty of cookware, flatware, tableware, and space to use it in. One thing I will take with me is the seat IN the counter...I will have one like that the minute I get my own kitchen. Besides the huge windows, this was the best seat in the house. Two days later, five friends joined me. Everyone loved the place as much as I did, and there was a constant conversation about how amazing the kitchen was, how relaxing the ambiance, how quiet, how much of an escape this was for us all. We all have fairly high-pressure jobs and this was what we all needed; relaxation without pause. I'd promised to cook a lot, and there was always someone perched in that kitchen counter seat; a kitchen is a gathering place, a meal is a social event - this home was the perfect host for my gathering. The Phoenicia Diner is EXCELLENT for when you don't want to cook (get the Bourbon milkshake!) and the local liquor store is super friendly (if not super-stocked to a chick from the City) and they had a GREAT local vineyard. I cannot recommend this highly enough, and I plan on making this trip again asap. The Summer should be tremendous!

    Davisha2015-03-30T00:00:00Z
  • We loved Amy's beautiful cabin! The babbling stream behind the house was so relaxing. The large high windows near the long table were awesome. It was a quick drive to Woodstock where we spent the day walking around. Amy quickly responded to emails and was super helpful before we even got to the cabin. Thanks for the great weekend!

    Kat2016-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • Amy's place is perfect for that weekend getaway - nested up against the stream you can hear the soothing running water from every window in the house. The kitchen is a delight to cook in and the great big room is filled with light and space making it perfect to eat your wonderful meal with a group of your close friends. Spend time on the deck, dip your toes or your whole self in the stream or cozy up by the fire place you can't really go wrong. Amy was very communicative and helpful and made sure we had a super easy time - which we did.

    Sean2017-06-19T00:00:00Z
  • Amy's cabin was lovely, we had a great stay. It's about 5 minutes away from Phoenicia and next to a beautiful stream. All my interactions with the host were positive. I would highly recommend this place!

    Louise2011-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at Amy's Steamside Cabin. It was very comfy. In a beautiful location by a roaring stream. We loved having breakfast by the window overlooking the stream and spending the evening by the fire in the library. It was a great base of operations for our family's ski trip to Belleayre.

    Steve2014-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Amy's beautiful house was perfect. The stream is directly behind the house and is so serene. There's even a little swimming hole down the stream a little ways. The house itself is stunning and feels very homey. Amy quickly responded to all of my questions and even left us some treats in the fridge. I could not have asked for a better place to spend a relaxing weekend.

    Seth2015-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • This house was absolutely outstanding. I was in quite a bind with the place me and 8 friends were going to stay at falling through at the VERY last minute and Amy answered my requested in a VERY timely fashion and we were on our way in a few hours. There was just enough room for 9 of us (with one person on a couch) and we all had more than enough space. The "great room" has the most fantastic views with huge windows. We could all sit and eat together at the massive dining table. The piano, guitars and various musical instruments were a huge hit! It was easy to get to, but also so far away from everything that we felt like we were in our own world. There's grocery stores nearby and Amy was extremely responsive any time we had questions or issues. I would rent this house again in a second.

    Amy2015-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a lovely time at Amy's home. We were two families, a total of 8, and we just fit. We found plenty of toys to keep the little ones occupied and the setting was very woodsy and pretty. We felt worlds away. The nearby Phoenecia diner is a must for brunch and Woodstock was close enough to drive to for shopping.

  • Oliver's house worked well for us. The location was perfect, close to everything. Oliver is also very quick to respond. A big plus for us was the heat; especially with the cold spell, we have been having. Previously we had stayed in homes where many of the rooms were quite drafty and the heat was hard to control. Definitely recommended.

  • Literally 5 minute walk from Phoenicia. Bars, shops, hiking trail head and creek. Exactly as advertised. Kitchen had a variety of hot sauces!!!!

  • Oliver was a warm and welcoming host. He provided us with good tips for making our way around town - it was our first time to this area. The house is cozy and comfortable! We searched for a pet-friendly house and Oliver's Phoenicia Escape turned out to be an excellent choice. The house is conveniently located for dining, walks to town or hiking the trails. Also close to the main roads to access nearby towns if you choose. I would definitely stay here again!

    Ginny2017-06-04T00:00:00Z
  • Oliver's home is in an awesome location just blocks from downtown Phoenicia, but it feels very quiet and residential. The home is spacious, clean and has all basic amenities, plus a great porch and fire pit. Wonderful!

  • I stayed at Oliver's over 4th of July holiday and it was fantastic. The house is super clean and incredibly accommodating. Just a 3 minute walk to main street. Oliver was so helpful by telling us where to eat, hike and hang out. My boyfriend, puppy and I had a great stay and I would highly recommend Oliver's Phoenicia Escape.

  • Oliver's house is comfortable, extremely clean and in a great walkable location. You can walk to local hiking trails, downtown to restaurants and shopping or to the end of the street for access to the Esopus. Oliver was very welcoming and easy to communicate with. We really enjoyed chatting with him and his friendly neighbors.

  • Beautiful place in a great area and neighborhood. Loved it and would be coming back again.

    Nauman2017-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • The Bungalow is spacious, clean, and comfortable. We stayed over the weekend to go hiking in the Catskills and it was exactly what we hoped it would be. It's also conveniently just down the road from The Pines restaurant and a 7 minute drive from restaurants in Phoenicia. If it hadn't rained, we probably would have made good use of the fire pit or the grill as well. Chase and Liz were also very accommodating hosts and contacted us after we arrived to see if we needed anything. All in all, it's a great little bungalow in the woods.

    Paul2018-05-13T00:00:00Z
  • The bungalow is a comfortable and cozy hideaway with good access to cute towns and great hikes. The house had everything we needed and the backyard is great. We really enjoyed the sunroom as well. The house is not in the middle of town (20 min to Woodstock, <10 to Phoenicia) but isn’t too remote either. Having The Pines across the street was a huge plus. Also Lyft is now operating in the area so if you want to have a drink in town, you can! Chase was great with communication and accommodating.

Two bedroom mid-century cabin with plenty of Catskills charm and fenced backyard with picnic table and grill. Part of a bungalow community on the Esopus creek, just one mile out of downtown Phoenicia.
The house was built in 1946 during the mid-century Catskills boom as a seasonal cabin and has been lovingly revived to mix awesome retro magic with contemporary colors and comfort. Located an easy mile from the town of Phoenicia (recently highlighted as a prime destination by the New York Times, Vogue, and Budget Travel) and a two-minute walk to the Esopus Creek. The cabin has gorgeous knotty pine walls throughout for that rustic feel, but has been updated to make it cool in the summer (a fan in the gables that is automatically activated when it gets hot, there are two box fans for you to plug in wherever, and an air conditioner in the common space that cools the house down but doesn't turn it into a refridgerator) and cozy in the winter (insulation, forced-air heat, and a wood-burning stove). The house is 800 square feet with fast wifi, two bedrooms, a fenced in backyard for your kids and dog and two free bikes for you to ride into town. The house has a well-equipped galley style kitchen with new appliances and cookware and a window overlooking the backyard, plus a small dining area that seats four, comfy living room with a queen sleeper sofa, renovated bathroom, master bedroom with a queen bed, and junior bedroom with two twin (trundle) beds. Dogs are welcome (and treats are included!) and there is no pet fee. The kitchen is well-stocked with a cabinet full of spices, oil and vinegar, and butter in the fridge, plus all the supplies for making s'mores over the wood stove or back yard grill. There is also a french press and electric tea kettle with coffee, a selection of teas, sugar in the raw, artificial sweetener, and yummy local raw honey for your use. You just need to pick up milk or creamer if you want it. The kitchen is also outfitted with new Calphalon pots and pans, Wusthof knives, a crockpot, a toaster, a microwave, a corkscrew, and a bottle opener. Plus all the plates, bowls, cups, mugs and flatware you might need. The cabin is perfect for a romantic getaway, a friends' weekend, or family fun in the Catskills. In the summer, tube or fish for trout in the Esopus, bike one of the routes I can recommend to you, or hike in Catskill Park. For winter fun, the house is 25 minutes from both Belleayre and Hunter, and 40 minutes from Windham mountain.
The bungalow community that the cabin is located in is just steps from the Esopus creek and at the entry to Woodland Valley. The house is not directly on Route 28 but it is within earshot and eyesight of the busy main road. Route 28 is always plowed in the winter, so road access to the cabin and main necessities in the area is not a problem. The community the cabin is in is a mix of year round residents and weekenders. The town of Phoenicia is an amazing little hamlet with a liquor store, an ice cream parlor, several tasty restaurants to choose from, and a very walkable and bikeable main street. The location is a perfect blend of culture (community theater in Phoenicia, independent art galleries throughout the area, and an art house movie theater in Woodstock) and unfettered access to all the offerings of the Catskills for outdoors adventures: tubing, hiking, and fly fishing for local trout can all be done within a short walk, bike, or drive from the cabin. The cabin is a short drive from Belleayre (20 minutes), Hunter (25 minutes), and Windham (40 minutes) mountains for skiing in the winter, and many of the trails nearby are great fun on snowshoes.
  • Dacia's home is absolutely lovely, and the area is perfect. We had an outstanding time during our weekend stay. She gave great recommendations (Phoenicia Diner, Peekamoose Tap, the giant ledge trail) and was very welcoming and accommodating. While we didn't have time to cook, we appreciated the ample supply of fresh herbs, cooking supplies, and tea and coffee. One day was extremely rainy, and we still enjoyed ourselves thoroughly because her house was so nice and cozy, a great place to just hang out and relax. Would definitely stay here again. Thanks Dacia!

    Nicole2016-06-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at Dacia's cabin! Dacia was a perfect host - Check in was easy and the house was fully stocked with all necessities plus had a lot of great extras like dog treats and s'mores. The backyard space was perfect for all of us - small child and doggie included. The cabin is close to lots of great restaurants including our favorite - Phoenicia Diner. I would happily recommend the cabin to anyone looking for a great place in the Catskills.

    Erika2017-03-26T00:00:00Z
  • Adorable, clean cabin that was easy to find and close to many activities. Nice fenced in yard so we could let our dog off leash. Beautiful gardens! Loved going to the farm stand a few minutes down the road for jam, blueberries, and tomatoes.

    Caitlin2017-06-04T00:00:00Z
  • Cute and cozy cabin close to Phoenicia. We loved the fireplace and biking to Phoenicia Diner for breakfast. House had everything we needed and Dacia's restaurant recommendations were spot on. Thanks for everything!

    Nancy2016-05-10T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend's family and I came up to Phoenicia for a long weekend and we had a lovely stay in Dacia's home. The home was spotless and really well-stocked. Our dogs had lots of fun playing in the fenced-in backyard and we enjoyed the nature, good food and wonderful culture of the Catskills. Just a small note though - before coming up, write out directions or print them out because all of us lost cell phone reception about 20-25 minutes into the drive on Rt 28. That aside, would definitely rent again! Thanks Dacia!

    Marsha2015-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • A group of me and my friends stayed at Dacia's cabin for a weekend of snowboarding at Hunter. Dacia was very responsive and accommodating. She ensured our stay was as pleasant and smooth as possible; she even remotely set the indoor temperature so we were all warm and cozy upon our arrival. The beds and sofa bed were comfortable. Clean pillows, comforters and linens were available for use. Lots of pans and dishware for home-cooked meals. There were even graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate for making smores at the fireplace. I will gladly stay here again if given the opportunity and happily recommend to those looking get away from the city life.

    Christian2016-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Overall a very nice, cozy place, and a good value. Dacia went out of her way to make sure that everything went smoothly, including having a well-stocked kitchen, clear house instructions, and a big pile of wood. The cabin is a little rough around the edges (frayed carpet, water stains on ceiling), and it's within earshot of busy route 28, but it's homey and a good value compared to some other places we have stayed nearby.

There are many local farmstands for your basic groceries and produce - Migliorelli's is great and about a min drive away. • I had an amazing girls weekend at Mel’s place! The home is adorable, clean & oh so cozy. Per Mel’s suggestion, we stopped by Foxfire Mountain House down the road for some delicious cocktails. Will definitely try to come back in the summer to use that outdoor fire pit!

    Lizzy2018-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • We had the perfect snowy weekend at Mel's cottage -- can't recommend it highly enough. Exactly the warm, beautiful, thoughtful place described, with lots of nice surprises too -- somehow feels perfectly curated and perfectly relaxed and homey at the same time. We loved hanging out on the heated porch and by the fire (both inside and out by the firepit) and walking up the road to Foxfire Mountain House for amazing cocktails. A great home away from home -- thank you, Mel!

  • This is a great place to stay in the Catskills. The description, amenities and photos are all very accurate. Mel was a great host, very responsive and left a very helpful house manual for all our questions before and during the stay. My husband and I and a friend stayed comfortably in this beautifully rustic home. I recommend it. It took us about 3-3.5 hours driving from downtown Manhattan (we had traffic). What we did: Ate at Cucina in Woodstock (good). Got sandwiches at Bread Alone Bakery (very good). Drove to Diamond Notch trail head and hiked to the falls (Diamond Notch Falls/Westkill Falls), about 4 miles round-trip. It's a moderate/intermediate hike. The falls aren't very deep, so it would be hard to swim there, plus the water is ice cold. Made dinner with the grill at the house (very easy to use and coals provided). Ate at Phoenicia diner (expect a long wait), which was good.

  • We loved our stay at Mel's perfect cabin! The space is cozy, absolutely perfectly outfitted, and tidy. It felt like home (or the home I wish I had). It's also incredibly easy to find, and close to town and countless hiking trails, which we made good use of. It even inspired our own impromptu real estate hunt in the area... Miss it already. We plan to return in the near future!

    Rachel2016-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Mel is an exceptional host, and the house and property were amazing! The photos are totally true to the experience, and we couldn't have asked for more. The cabin was perfect for 4 people for a quick weekend getaway. There are grocery stores within a short drive, and the Phoenicia Diner wasn't too far either, although we never felt the need to leave the property. The yard and fire pit are perfect for hanging out into the night. We would love to come back, and make it an annual trip!

    Kelsey2016-05-23T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect for a relaxing break away from the city, I'd recommend this place to anyone and everyone! Beautifully decorated and perfectly located. Every amenity we could think of and Mel was always on stand by with answers to questions/queries we had (which was none because everything was so easy!) Honestly wish I could pay a visit to here every weekend.

    Robyn2017-05-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had the best time at Mel's cabin! Very clean, very cozy, and stocked with everything you'd need. We spent our days out XC skiing and snowshoeing, and returned at night to cook in the well-equipped kitchen and relax by the wood fire. Her place is close to markets and restaurants, but still very quiet and peaceful. Mel is a great host and I highly recommend this spot!

  • The cottage is wonderful, chic and cozy design with everything one needs for a fun upstate stay near nature. The place was very clean, shower is great with great water pressure and consistent hot water, the beds and linens are also super comfortable. This place can comfortably house 6 ppl. Fast and reliable WiFi. Jeremy was super attentive, left great tips about local restaurants, markets and things to do, and overall was a wonderful host! Will definitely stay here again.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It was exactly what we were looking for on our weekend escape from the city. Rustic but stylish with tasteful furniture and thoughtful accents. Hip but warm and cozy, with a distinct “woodsy” feel. Just the right amount of stuff - lots of useful items like heaters and kitchen equipment. But never feeling cluttered. Minimalist without feeling bare or impersonal. On top of that, the location is perfect - very accessible by Catskills standards, no scary back roads at night, close to fun towns like Phoenicia and Woodstock, close to skiing and great hiking, and priced very well. We were sad to leave but look forward to coming back!

    Patrick2018-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • Best vacation I had since my childhood. The white interiors have a soothing effect. The creek was something else. The constant flow of water allows you to swim like in an endless pool, in one spot. If you know how to safely position yourself on the pebbles just where the stream turns left and is very strong, the strong rush of water gushing over your entire body gives you a powerful kick, physical and mental - out of this world. I lost 40 years in a second.

    Noam2018-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Rockcut Ledge! The cottage was a perfect combination of rustic coziness and modern, clean design. (A big plus: The beds are super comfortable!) We didn’t end up using it, but there’s a private grill and picnic table just outside, and the creek is just a few steps away. Jeremy was incredibly responsive and kind in handling the only minor hiccup during our stay (a brief regional power outage that was completely out of his control). He really couldn’t have been a better host. We’ll be back!

    Erin2018-05-06T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at the cottages! They are so cozy, clean, nicely decorated, and have all the anemeties you could need for cooking full meals. The beds are very comfortable we loved the fluffy down comforters! We were welcomed with the fire already on for us - very cozy! Communication with Jeremy was a breeze, he was very quick to respond to any needs or questions we had. Definitely will be back again soon!

  • My wife and I (& our little baby) had such an awesome stay! The cottage was adorable, clean & comfortable, and had everything we needed. Just the right balance of upgrades and original charm. Plus, the location is fantastic. Having the Esopus Creek right there made for a lovely walk and gorgeous view. Jeremy is a great host and was nothing but helpful. We look forward to coming back soon!

  • Our group had a wonderful time! Jeremy was very quick to respond and was always available if we needed anything. Beds were super comfy and the cabin was very nicely decorated. Perfect location, only minutes from Phoenicia and Woodstock. The farm stand across the way was perfect and Bread Alone up the way was convenient for bread and morning coffee. Will definitely be back!

  • The house is exactly as pictured- spacious and well appointed. Key drop off and pickup went seamlessly and Lindsey periodically checked in throughout the weekend but mostly left us alone which we appreciated since we were super busy with wedding activities. Thanks again for a great stay!

    Jessica2015-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • Lindsey is a FANTASTIC host. We had the best time in Phoenicia and were a stones throw from town. She was lovely and very accommodating. The entire property was gorgeous and there is access to hiking, swimming, restaurants and shopping. LOVE LOVE LOVE Bear Cottage and strongly recommend staying there.

    Amanda2014-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • The house is as beautiful and cozy as it looks in the pictures. Lindsey and Gillian were both incredibly helpful and welcoming. I can honestly say that staying at the 1890 Bear Cottage was like staying in paradise. The bed was cozy and there was an excellent selection of music and books. I really can't recommend this place enough. I can't wait to come back!

    Cristina2014-11-01T00:00:00Z
  • Lindsey was in touch the whole time and her house is beautiful! It was even bigger than we thought it would be from the pictures, which was good because we were a large group of people. Particularly loved the kitchen and the clawfoot tub.

    Catherine2016-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • Lindsay was terrific with correspondence in the weeks before my family and I visited Bear Cottage and settling in upon arrival went smoothly. The cottage is really wonderful- beautifully furnished, clean and very charming. Our best moments were drinking coffee and tea in the 4 rocking chairs on the porch each morning. Phoenicia is a GREAT little town-- antique stores, top notch restaurants and river tubing within easy walking distance of Lindsey's place. Everyone in the town was exceptionally friendly. Would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks Lindsey!

    Alex2014-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • What a gem! My fiancee and our friends had a wonderful weekend at Bear Cottage. It was clean and cozy, the beds very comfy, and the kitchen well-stocked and spacious. We were four but the house could easily accommodate six if you put two more on the futon in the library. It was cold and rainy one day but there's heat and the living room fireplace throws off some serious warmth. Best of all, you can walk to everything you need in town. We'll definitely be back when the weather warms up so we can go tubing. :)

    Danny And Shannon2014-04-28T00:00:00Z
  • The house was clean and comfortable, with plenty of room for our family. The location is a block away from restaurants and shops in Phoenicia as well as the Esopus Creek. We had an enjoyable stay.

    Jessica2016-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • I definitely recommend this house for your stay in Phoenicia. The location is very convenient, especially if you are attending an event at Mount Tremper Arts, as we were. There was plenty of space for our group of 8, and we loved hanging out on the porch. Lindsey is also very responsive and even checked in while we were there to make sure everything went smoothly. Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better day place to stay in Phoenicia.

Our comfortable house features a meadow & a mountain in the back yard, yet we're only a 7-minute walk from restaurants, shops, & ATMs. 1/2 mile from Long Path trailhead. Hiking, tubing, swimming, & skiing are nearby. You can even get here by bus.
Come enjoy our beautiful setting at the foot of Mount Romer. The Esopus Creek is across the street, and you can walk to Phoenicia's Main Street and NYC/Woodstock bus--or to the Long Path trailhead on Lane St. Located on a quiet country road, a 20-minute drive from Woodstock and 2 hours from the George Washington Bridge, the house has bamboo floors, clawfoot bathtub, large kitchen, dishwasher, washer/dryer, deck, garden. There are two bedrooms, both with double beds, and you can put a mattress pad for one person on the floor of the meditation room. There's also a double-sized pull-out couch in the living room. You're here for country living, right? So there's no TV, no a/c, no cell service. (Also no hair dryer and no ironing board, but there is a small iron.) We do have free wireless Internet, and you can use our home phone for local and long-distance calls. (There's Verizon cell service in town and AT&T a couple miles up the road, and, again, we DO have wifi.) We also have a blender, a toaster, a 12-cup coffee maker--but only ONE bathroom. Out the back door and across the stream is a meadow with a series of wildflowers blooming from spring through early fall. From the meadow, you can walk straight onto the mountain and begin exploring. (NOTE: Our back yard is somewhat hazardous for SMALL CHILDREN, who should not be left unattended, as there is a short but steep drop to a seasonal stream.) More hiking, plus fishing, tubing, and swimming, are within walking distance, and many state hiking trails are 5 to 15 minutes away by car. For skiing and snowboarding, Belleayre Mountain is a 20-minute drive (bus available in winter), and Hunter Mountain is just a little farther. Walk or drive into Phoenicia for a small grocery store, several restaurants (brick oven pizza and an extensive menu at Brio's, steak and seafood at The Phoenician, drinks and elegant snacks at Tavern 214), Sportsman's Bar (featuring $1 tacos and $3 margaritas on Tuesday evenings), art gallery, boutiques, 2 banks with ATMs. NOTE: This house is our home, not a rental cottage. We clean for hours before our guests arrive--using obsessively natural cleansers--but we are both writers, not hotelkeepers. The furniture is second-hand, and the dishes do not match. The vast majority of our guests are quite comfortable here. However, if you are the finicky type, you might want to look for more upscale, pristine accommodations. Here you will find a rickety record player and an eclectic collection of vinyl (Nina Simone, Brahms, Giuseppe Logan, Frank Zappa, Woody Guthrie, Smothers Brothers, etc.) It's a three-mile drive to Chichester Yoga. Zen Mountain Monastery is also three miles away, and Woodstock has a Tibetan monastery, 15 miles away, both offering community meditations. SUMMARY OF SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS: Queen-size mattress on wood frame in front bedroom Queen-size mattress on metal frame in back bedroom Double-sized pull-out couch in living room. 4-inch mattress on floor in meditation room. There is only ONE BATHROOM.
Nestled between a mountain and the hamlet of Phoenicia, the house provides the best of both worlds--spectacular natural beauty with the convenience of restaurants, shops, and cash machines a short walk away.
  • A cozy home, just as described. The home was very warm and cozy which is important to me as I get cold easily. We four girls had a great time, as the town was within a very easy walking distance as was a hike. There were loads of blankets to snuggle up with at night and the list of restaurants along with hiking trails provided by Ellen was great!

    Jin2015-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay! The house was very cute, and the host was helpful.

    Magda2017-04-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great location. Super easy host to work with. Roomy 3 bedroom with nice back porch. Would happily return anytime.

    Chad2014-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at the house for a long weekend, and we skied in Belleayre, which is very close by and had a lovely dinner in the little town of Phoenicia . In terms of proximity to places like that, it is definitely a plus. The hosts were lovely and very welcoming! That being said, for us the house was a bit too rustic, the kitchen and bathroom were very old (my husband likes to call it "authentic") and not the cleanest (I admit that I have high standards when it comes to cleanliness!) Phoenicia is a very sweet little town! the house is well situated, and probably very pretty in the summer (lovely deck and back yard with a water stream).

    Cecile2015-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Quiet street. Easy to find. In Phoenicia - across the river from the town. Easy drive to Woodstock. Did not meet Ellen however she was very proactive in communicating helpful info.

    John2017-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Ellen's place was exactly as advertised, it was cozy and had plenty of space for a family of 5. The Esopus creek was right across the street and town was so close it was an easy 10 minute walk. Great country getaway at an excellent price. Kids are already asking when we can we go back.

    David2018-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Ellen is the perfect host. Very kind, flexible and very easy to communicate with, our stay was wonderful! The house is great, ideally located in the heart of Phoenicia, with lots of activities walking distance: tubing, swimming, hiking... A perfect gateway for the week-end! I highly recommend staying at her place! Thanks again Ellen :)

    Elise2015-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • The house is idyllic and Ellen is a wonderful host. There were plenty of toiletries, towels, sheets, and appliances! The back deck is so peaceful, with the creek streaming near by. The town of Phoenicia is so close by the house and it's lovely. I highly recommend staying in Ellen's home, especially if you love some down-to-earth relaxation. (They also have a meditation room that is available for guests!)

Perfect place to get out of the city and unwind! There are many different hiking trails, waterfalls, streams and wilderness just in our backyard. We have a large outdoor area for bonfires, bbq and/or gatherings. There are a lot of summer activities happening in town, such as; tubing, hiking, Woodstock (10 min drive), concerts, festivals, flea markets etc.Downtown Phoenicia is only a 2 min drive or a 5 min bicycle ride. (We have bicycles available.)
  • We were very pleased with Christine’s cabin. This is the second time we have stayed and greatly enjoyed both stays. The outside fire pit and backyard is awesome. There’s a nice grill for barbecuing. It’s a fairly secluded area but a stones throw away from fishing, rafting, and even some restaurants.

    Kathryn2018-04-24T00:00:00Z
  • My family and I had a wonderful visit in the Catskills. Our stay at Christine’s cabin was very peaceful and serene. She was always very quick to respond to any questions and was helpful providing written materials for local activities and restaurants. We also enjoyed the cabin’s personal touches and the spacious backyard. Every morning we ate breakfast outside listening to nature and watching the wildlife. The cabin provided a comfortable stay for our 5 day trip. It’s a private but central location in Phoenicia. Our 3 year old daughter is still talking about how much fun she had at the cabin. We would definitely stay here again.

    David2018-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cabin with cozy decor and beautiful outdoor space. My whole family loved it and hopes to come back soon!

    Giuliana2018-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • The hosts were invisible but available which can't get any better. We loved the privacy that gave us and felt very much at home. Phoenicia is close to some amazing spots and swimming holes and this place made it all very accessible while being secluded and very quiet. The outside space they have is very beautiful and a campfire option - remarkable. We totally enjoyed this space.

  • Perfect weekend getaway spot! It was everything I was looking for. The outside area originally caught my attention and I was not disappointed. The back yard had a ton of land and the fire-pit was amazing. The house had the perfect rustic cabin feel that I was looking for. It was super comfortable and felt like home. It was secluded from the street so you really feel like you are in the woods. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have slept in. Communication with Christine was quick and easy. I highly recommend staying here!

  • We had a lovely time at the cabin. It was great fun to get away from everybody to our little place in the woods. The fire pit and grill area with outdoor furniture is especially fun. We definitely will be back!

  • What a great location! The property is beautiful, tranquil and you really feel like you're in the woods despite being a quick drive into town and not too far away (but far away enough) from other houses. Our kids had a blast running around and exploring and we really enjoyed the hammocks and outdoor fire pit as well. The home itself is very cozy, clean and perfect for a couple or a small family. Also, getting in touch with either Christine or Dave was quick and easy. We will definitely be back!

  • Photos don’t do the place enough justice - great indoor & outdoor space. Hosts communicate well and prepare you with a guide to the property. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a cabin retreat for the weekend!

  • The loft was beautiful and accurately depicted in the photographs. While it was insanely cold outside during our visit, the loft was nice and warm, and the luxury spa-like bathroom, with the giant tub and sauna built into the shower, was a perfect getaway from the elements. We absolutely loved it here and are looking forward to coming back.

  • This was one of the most relaxing 2 days we have ever spent anywhere. The loft is beautifully decorated and very cozy. The bathroom sealed the deal though. My husband said he had the best showers of his life and I have to agree.the weather didn't cooperate but no big deal, just more excuse to stay indoors! Kerry is very easy to deal with and prompt with replies. Phoenicia Diner has amazing food as does Brios, Sportsman's Alamo Cantina ($1 Taco Tues!) and The Phoenician (amazing steaks). We will definitely be making return visits. Thank you for such a wonderful time (Website hidden by Airbnb) Elizabeth & Richard Chappell

  • We had a lovely stay in the loft! The bed was dangerously comfortable, and the bathroom was luxurious. Kerry provided us with an assortment of teas/ coffee and a mini fridge. There were several restaurants within walking distance, although we chose to drive elsewhere for dinner. The Peekamoose Restaurant in Big Indian, about 10 minutes away, was excellent! We also hiked the Tanbark Trail, which was conveniently located in a field behind the property. It was a relatively short hike (though strenuous in a few places) with a spectacular view of Phoenicia from the lookout. Thanks for the hospitality, Kerry!

    Katie2015-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • Our best Airbnb experience yet. Kerry's loft is bright, spacious, and so comfortable. The bed was divine and the bathroom was exactly as advertised - like a spa! We'd come back in a heartbeat.

  • We visited Phoenicia a couple weekends ago and had a very relaxing, peaceful stay at Kerry's loft. The loft is very private, as you have your own entrance and are on the third floor of the house. We really felt that we were getting away from it all: the loft is beautifully decorated and spacious, and it has great views of mountains out the windows. The bathroom was also amazing: there's a huge soaking tub, plus the best shower we've ever used: it was tiled with what looked like river stones and had about five separate water jets! When we wanted to go out, Kerry was a warm and friendly host who offered us tips on what to do. The house is centrally located in relation to all Phoenicia amenities: restaurants are literally a one-minute walk away, as are tube rental facilities. We recommend spending an afternoon on the Esopus River!

  • My boyfriend and I had a lovely stay at Kerry's loft. The bathroom is absolutely divine and well worth the trip. We had an excellent time exploring Phonecia and are already planning a trip back for this summer. I'd highly recommend this beautiful, clean accommodation to anyone. Thanks for a great stay!

This adorable cottage tucked away in exclusive Woodland Valley, outside of Phoenicia NY is the perfect place for anyone who wants to get away from the chaos of the city but doesn't want to travel too far -- 2 hours by car from GWB and 2½ by bus. The house is set up like a luxury private escape; quality sheets and towels make this a great value. Truly a romantic paradise. The house has 2 bedrooms, second bedroom is a spectacular loft overlooking the main floor -- wake up in a tree house! 1 full bath, kitchen, living and dining rooms. Hike al fresco amongst the trees and under the crystal clear sky (no light pollution here)! Don't forget to watch the sunset over the mountains or snuggle up in front of the stacked bluestone fireplace or wood burning stove. The open design lends the sense of space but makes you feel cozy and tucked away at the same time. Don't go anywhere and enjoy your own personal slice of the beautiful Catskills, or take advantage of the location and stroll down main street Phoenicia, have breakfast at the new Phoenica Diner, and shop at the local shops after your morning hike. Access the local attractions in nearby Woodstock and see what the talk is all about in this legendary town. Restaurants, shopping, theater, live music, and artists' galleries abound. This is the perfect time to take advantage of the beauty and serenity of the mountains. Belleayre Mountain is 10 minutes away, Hunter Mountain only 15 minutes and Wyndham Ski Area, Ski Plattekill, and Frost Valley are only a little further. The house is set up with a mudroom area, take off your boots and relax by the fire.
  • This is the perfect weekend getaway -- secluded in a beautiful wooded setting, a cozy home complete with lofted bedroom and fireplace, and all the amenities of home. The house was fully equipt with kitchen necessities, linens, firewood, and a land line since cell phones won't work (some texting went through and there is wifi). My fiance and I sincerely look forward to our next trip to Mark's cabin and appreciate all of his hospitality.

  • Our family had a great weekend stay at Mark's cabin. We enjoyed the fireplace and everything about the cozy place. The location is very convenient to exploring the near by town of Woodstock and lots of hiking. Highly recommended!

  • Mark's cottage is a lovely place at a convenient location in the Catskills. We felt home immediately! Cozy & complete with great beds, basic kitchen and nice garden. We enjoyed playing family games and reading books in front of the fireplace and had a blast hiking and skiing in the beautiful surroundings. Mark's tips were very useful. We definitely recommend!

  • Fabulous place. Would return for sure!

    Stephen2018-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • Mark's cottage was the perfect getaway to unwind and relax from the big city! Based on others' reviews, we'd rented an SUV. And, I'm glad we did, since there were unfinished roads heading up to the cottage (which added to the desired remote vibe we wanted!) We happened to book our stay during a time that the neighboring houses were uninhabited, so we enjoyed full privacy during our vacation, which was an added bonus! The rushing waters behind the cottage brought instant calm, the sound of which could be accessed even indoors when you opened the windows. There's a full kitchen, which we appreciated, since we liked cooking some of our meals. And, even though it rained and was cold most of the time during our stay, it just gave us an opportunity to make use of the woodstove and fireplace, which kept us nice and toasty! Mark even supplied two cozy robes for us to use! The cottage is close to the Phoenicia Diner, which we happily frequented, due to their delicious and locally sourced dishes. It is also close to the nearby market for food and other necessities, as well as other great eateries, and 20 minutes away from Woodstock. There were some issues that came up during our stay, which Mark promptly addressed. He even greeted us when we arrived, and was in easy contact during our stay. His cottage was the perfect remedy for relaxation in nature!

  • Mark's house was great! It was tucked back in the woods in a very private location. The house was cozy and accommodating. We really enjoyed the fireplace and cooking amenities. The location was perfect for nearby hikes and ski slopes. Highly recommend! - was one of the best Airbnb's I've stayed at.
