Surrounded by glorious countryside, there are many walks and cycle routes on its doorstep including those over to the neighbouring villages of Broadwell and The Oddingtons, all home to popular country pubs. The much loved market town of Stow-on-the-Wold is just half a mile away, benefitting from a number of independent shops, restaurants and tearooms, along with the Farmers’ market which takes place every second Thursday of the month, showcasing quality local produce. Stow’s main feature is the historic market square which used to host the annual sheep fairs, and the narrow alleyways, or ‘tures’, would have been used to channel the hundreds of sheep to market. Maugersbury is well-placed for exploring the many picturesque towns and villages of the North Cotswolds including Moreton-in-Marsh, Chipping Campden, Bourton-on-the-Water and The Slaughters. These picture-postcard settings offer a range of eateries and tourist attractions, and for day trips, further afield destinations such as Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford and Bath are easily accessible. The Cotswolds are characterised by attractive small towns and villages, built of the underlying Cotswold stone (a yellow oolitic limestone). In the Middle Ages the wool trade made the Cotswolds prosperous and some of this money was put into the building of churches, leaving the area with a number of large handsome Cotswold stone "wool churches". The area remains affluent, which has encouraged the establishment of many high quality pubs, restaurants and antique shops.

A track through our ancient protected beech wood leads you to a clearing which overlooks the beautiful rolling Cotswold countryside. Idyllic, peaceful and extremely private, the Stone Hut is a relaxing retreat away from it all, yet in the heart of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the historic town of Stow on the Wold. The Stone Hut is at the centre of the clearing with separate kitchen and shower huts sympathetically located to respect the beauty of the location.
This is an ecologically friendly site. The Stone Hut itself has recently been renovated to protect the old building which possibly dates back to before the 14th century. Electricity is all 12 volts, supplied by a battery bank charged entirely by solar energy. Heating inside the Stone Hut is by way of a traditional Villager wood burning stove using timber cut from fallen trees in the woodland around the hut. Cooking can either be done on the outside BBQ or in the kitchen hut tucked away at the foot of an ancient beech tree. The toilet facilities comprise of a purpose built timber building with toilet, basin and shower. Hot water for washing and showering comes from an external boiler. The water for the site has been captured from further up the hill in the woods by way of small reservoir. This water is not for drinking though bottles of fresh drinking water will be provided in the kitchen for drinking and cooking. A Coleman extreme cool box is provided with ice blocks for the storage of perishable food. Although beautifully secluded the Stone Hut can be reached by 4x4 vehicles. Alternatively parking is available at our farmhouse and we will be happy to transport luggage to and from the site. Please be aware that this is a wilderness site that we have left as undisturbed as possible and a good pair of hiking boots would be handy for the 10 minute walk from our parking to the site. We have never struggled to get a strong 4G mobile signal at the hut for when you just have to break back into the 21st century!!

  • Was für ein tolles verstecktes Juwel in der malerischen kleinen Stadt Stow on the Wold.

Kimberley2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Wunderschön präsentiertes Zimmer in Ashs schönem Zuhause.

Set in the heart of the Cotswolds, this charming cottage enjoys a secluded and peaceful position, within a few minutes' walk of the town's bustling market square, antique galleries, interesting shops, restaurants and pubs. It is a great base to explore the wider delights of the Cotswolds with Bourton-on-the-water and Moreton-on-the-Marsh close by. Oxford, Stratford, Warwick and Cheltenham are all less than 30 miles away.
We are spitting distance from beautiful Market Square of Stow on the Wold. Take a walk down fleece alley and you are there. It really is that simple to move around here. No need for a car just wonder around the beautiful town and take in the relaxed atmosphere.
2 min walk to the heart of Stow on the Wold. 10 mins to Morton on the Marsh by car. Bourton on the Water is 10 mins and Cheltenham is 20 mins by car.

Sehr empfehlenswert!

This charming, 200-year-old, 3-bedroom cottage is in the heart of the pretty Cotswold village of Lower Swell and is just one mile from Stow-on-the-Wold, one of the Cotswold’s most popular towns. Originally the village cowman’s cottage, 1 Horseshoe Cottage is now a semi-detached country holiday retreat with a contemporary kitchen, bathroom, wood burner and pretty garden. It is an ideal touring base for the Cotswolds, with an excellent village pub and free parking directly outside the cottage.
1 Horseshoe Cottage is a typical Cotswold stone cottage overlooking Lower Swell’s quintessentially English village green and War Memorial. As you step through the front door of the cottage, you’ll immediately feel the care and high specifications that the owner has used to modernize the cottage. Everything from the royal blue velvet sofa to the lighting and crisp bed linens exudes good taste, comfort and style. The cottage has a delightful English cottage garden, with a lawn and Bramley apple trees (guests are welcome to use the apples), a seating area and a brick barbeque with a grill. Lower Swell is a small Cotswold village (population 400), just over one mile from the historic market town of Stow-on-the-Wold and 17 miles to Cheltenham. Surrounded by open countryside, the village is the perfect location for walking. Take a circular walk around the surrounding villages and back to Lower Swell or cross the fields to nearby Bourton-on-the-Water - a walking distance of about five miles. Nearby Stow-on-the-Wold is a thriving Cotswold market town which, along with Moreton in Marsh, is perhaps the best known of the small Cotswolds towns. This popular town stands on a 700-foot high hill at a junction of seven major roads, including the Roman Fosse Way, perhaps a reason why it was the site of the last battle of the English Civil War in 1646. Stow has a sophisticated collection of shops and restaurants – including The Porch House Hotel, reputed to be the oldest inn in England, dating back to 947 AD. Local Amenities The closest food stores, restaurants, cafes, shops and a large supermarket are in Stow-on-the-Wold one mile away. The surrounding area also has many local farms that sell local fruit, vegetables and local produce. The village has six buses that run to Witney, Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Norton, Cheltenham and Moreton in Marsh. The nearest train stations are Moreton-in-Marsh and Kingham, (6 miles away), which have hourly trains on the GWR line to London Paddington via Oxford. The local village pub, The Golden Ball, is a family run pub, serving excellent food and Donnington beers. Traditional pub games are available, such as Aunt Sally, plus SKY TV (showing all the major sporting events in the adjoining room separate to main bar). Lower Swell has a beautiful church dating back to the 12th Century, with a Norman archway. Stow-on-the-Wold food stores: Co-Op Food store in The Square: open Mon to Fri 7am to 10pm and Sunday 8am to 10pm. Tesco on the Fosse Way, Stow-on-the-Wold, GL54 1BX: open Mon to Sat: 6am to midnight and Sun: 10am to 4pm. Stow also has several independently owned boutiques, antique shops and general amenities, including banks (Barclays and Lloyds) and a Post Office.

Located in the north Cotswolds, Stow-on-the-Wold is one of the principal market towns in the region. The main feature of the town is the historic market square which used to play host to the annual sheep fairs where, at the height of the Cotswold wool industry, up to 20,000 sheep were sold at one time. The market square is steeped in history and has two features which date back to the medieval period. At one end of the square there is the medieval cross which was erected to urge traders to carry out fair business under the eyes of God, and at the far end stand the town stocks which are found in the shadows of the old elm tree. Originally known as Edwardstow or Stow St Edward after the town's patron saint Edward, the town's church is also named after him. The church is just 100 yards from the town square and is a lovely place for locals and tourists alike to get some peace from the bustling market square. The north door is guarded by two yew trees and is a focal point of the town. Stow has traditional narrow alleyways, or "tures" as they were once known, which wind their way through the centre of the town. It is these same alleyways that were once used to channel the sheep to the fair. Another point of interest in the town is the well in Well Lane which is now a Grade II Listed Building. As a result of the rather unique geology of the area, water held in the higher layers of the limestone bursts out of various fissures on the slopes and two do still work as wells now. Food & Drink Stow has numerous places to eat and drink, with a range of cuisines and prices to suit all tastes and budgets. The list below is a small sample of the range of options available: The Queens Head Inn (www.donnington-brewery.com/the_queens_head_stow_on_the_wold): The Queens Head is a traditional town pub, owned by the local Donnington brewery. Here locals mix with tourists who are unsurprisingly attracted into this lovely old pub. Good traditional pub food and ale, in a great atmosphere; The Sheep (www.thesheepstow.co.uk): A seasonal menu with pizzas being a major focus. There is a wood-fired oven in the restaurant, where you can watch your freshly made pizza cook; The Talbot: Laid back drinking, eating and coffees in a traditional meeting place for the town slap bang in the Square. Sofas, original paintings, rickety old tables and chairs, with staff who are under the threat of death if they are not friendly! White Hart (www.thewhitehartstow.com): A 'boutique' style Inn, which has recently been beautifully refurbished throughout. The Inn boasts two cosy bars, lots of open fires and an atmospheric dining room. Hearty food is served during the day, with finer dining in the evening. All food is sourced locally and prepared on the premises; The Bell (www.thebellatstow.com): The Bell at Stow is the perfect country pub. Behind the ivy-clad façade lies a charming, stylish interior with the warmest of welcomes. A favourite with the locals, The Bell is open all day every day offering everything from a pint of well-kept cask ale through to a delicious three-course supper. Stow has a Tesco and a Co-op for regular food purchases and, for special treats, there is a traditional butcher's shop and a number of delicatessens specialising in local produce, including: Lambournes Butchers (www.lambournesbutchers.co.uk): A family owned, multi-award winning traditional butchers, renowned for locally-produced meat, poultry and game, sourced from hand-picked suppliers. Referring to the owner, the BBC's Adam Henson has observed that "what Bob doesn't know about sausages isn't worth knowing"; Cotswold Food Store and Café (www.cotswoldfoodstore.co.uk): The Cotswold Food Store and Café offers a huge variety of delicious local foods, ranging from locally sourced vegetables, meat, eggs and bread to charcuterie, hams and pates in its deli counter.

Friday evenings are legendary for the Champagne Happy Hour at 5pm - grab a seat if you can as the weekend gets off to the perfect start! The adjoining café offers freshly prepared meals by resident chef Sonya Kidney, along with home-made cakes, biscuits and light bites; Hamptons Fine Foods (www.hamptons-hampers.co.uk): Hamptons offer a wide range of quality foods to discerning customers. The shelves are packed with exclusive and delicious fine foods that one would not normally find in the mass outlets. A veritable Aladdin's cave. Hamptons specialise in gourmet hampers which can be collected from their shop or delivered direct.

At nearly 800 feet, Stow is the highest of the Gloucestershire Cotswolds towns and famous as a centre for antiques. The town radiates from the impressive market square, surrounded by Cotswold stone buildings. There is a good selection of specialist shops, cosy cafés and inns to enjoy. Stow has a fascinating history, with the market square once host to some of the Cotswolds’ largest sheep fairs, with up to 20,000 sheep herded into the square for sale. The medieval Market Cross and the old stocks give a sense of Stow’s early history. Stow had a significant role in the English Civil War – it was at nearby Donnington that the last battle was fought in 1646. St Edward’s Church was used as a prison for the defeated Royalist troops and is well worth a visit. Stow is also home to England’s oldest inn, The Porch House, as well as a great choice of other places to eat in the town.

    Andrea2019-10-06T00:00:00Z

  • Nickys Cottage in Stow on the Wold ist absolut wunderbar!

Friday evenings are legendary for the Champagne Happy Hour at 5pm - grab a seat if you can as the weekend gets off to the perfect start!
