"The Blue Stone" is just a piece of art - blue ceramic tiles - which quickly became the place where people meet: "We'll meet at the Blue Stone at 8!" Just stop there for a while and watch all the locals sitting there, waiting for their friends. The surrounding square is also worth a study. Every ethnic group in Bergen seems to have its own designated area. Just find a bench, eat a "skillingsbolle" (cinnamon bun) and watch Bergen's inner life:)

This is in the center of town but almost no tourists go here. You’ll find great stone steps up to the church, and all the buildings by the church are important to us. The university campus is here, the seafarers museum and the historical museum is here, and you can eat a very nice lunch in the botanical garden. Take a stroll in the super narrow and super cosy streets. The park Nygårdsparken starts here.

Løvstakken is the mountain closest to our house. Use good hiking shoes and start the hike behind the food store Coop Extra, Bønes. Follow the path that starts behind the fence by the recycling bins. It’s quite a steep path, but worth it for the spectacular views. Locals run and play here, especially in good weather.

Take the funicular or walk up to Mount Fløien. There you can visit the restaurant, or do like the Norwegians: Buy ice cream in the shop, and let the children play for a while in the huge play ground. Walk in the area and you will meet lots of hidden treasures in the woods. Fløien can also be the starting point for longer mountains hikes, for instance you can walk all the way to Mount Ulriken. But be careful if you walk away from the common paths! Tourists who forget this is a mountain area get hurt or lost every year.

You can take a cable car to Mount Ulriken from Montana but it's far better to walk. You need to be a bit experienced as it will challenge your balance, but it is very rewarding. Sherpas are working there right now, preparing stone steps for easier access, and it's a delight watching their exceptional skills. Bus from the fish market in Bergen or from our local bus stop (line 25 Haukeland sykehus: few departures so check before you go) There is a kiosk and a restaurant at the top. http://www.ut.no/tur/2.3000/

This is a lovely park with water springs and sculptures. You can find balls and things to entertain you with, in small boxes in the area or feed the ducks. Most people here are Norwegian families and students bringing packed lunches. In front of it, lies the technical museum which is very worthwhile visiting, and on the hill behind it, you find almost all the other museums in Bergen as well as Bergen University Campus.

The cafe is in an old museum building overlooking the city. Around it you find the botanical garden. I love this place. We go there with our friends once the sun comes out. (It often rains in Bergen.) The view is unbelievably stunning. Take the funicular to the top, and there your find this restaurant. Choose tables outside to get the best view. Buy Prosecco and perhaps mussels and just enjoy being alive:) At Fløien you will find as many local people as tourists. If you take the cable car to the top of Mount Ulriken, you may be surprised to find a fancy restaurant there! What is special about this restaurant is that you will be comfortable both in hiking gear and in your finest garments:) You can't beat the view, so bring warm clothes if you want to sit outside. They do, however, provide sheep skins for you to put in your lap. You can either just buy a coffee and a cinnamon bun or a full gourmet dinner:)

This is my husband's advice. He is in love with the traditional Norwegian food: Fish balls. It is impossible to think Bergen without Søstrene Hagelin (The Hagelin Sisters). They have "always" been here, and if you sit on a bus, you can be sure at least one of the passengers will munch on a fish ball from a Hagelin paper bag. It doesn't get more traditional than that...

This is SO cosy! It is in a historical basement, and you sit in small "caves" which were wine cellars in the middle ages. It is candle lit and very romantic. They have a particularly good wine cellar, and you can buy small sharing dishes to go with the wine. In the adjacent hotel, there is a restaurant as well, in case you need proper food.

The only alcohol you can buy in grocery stores is beer. Everything else you get from the wine monopolies. Alcohol is expensive in Norway, but very fine wine is probably cheaper than you can get at home. Our national wine monopoly is a huge buyer and therefore able to get great deals. Furthermore, the sellers are wine specialists.

This is a whole day experience so you have to be used to mountain hiking. We call it "The Plains" or "Vidden" in our dialect, and you walk from one mountain to another. It is possible to go by the funicular up and the cable car down, but still you have hours of walking ahead of you. Be careful to follow the map and ask locals you meet, as it is always dangerous to walk about "in the blind" in mountain areas. It's easier to start at Mount Ulriken, I think. Take line 25 to the cable car (book the cable car in advance), walk over to Mount Fløyen and take the funicular down (no need to buy in advance). Or, if you feel you have any zest left, walk down instead.
