Good Food
Two Bridges Hotel is a short 5 minute drive from the house or a very nice 1 hour downhill walk that takes in some lovely Dartmoor scenery (if you have two cars in the party, worth leaving a car down there before walking as can be a steep hike back!). We have had some very fine dining in the restaurant there, it may look from a different era but the food is modern and gourmet. £49 for 3 course menu https://www.twobridges.co.uk/eat/dinner/ It is also lovely during the day with a very cosy bar that serves wonderful cream teas and bar food. There are some great walks from Two Bridges too and a must see is the famous Wistman's Woods about a half hours walk away with the dwarf oak trees that are hundreds of years old. https://www.countryfile.com/go-outdoors/walks/walk-wistmans-wood-devon/

In Meavy there is the Royal Oak, which is the village near Burrator Lake (well worth a visit and walk, stunning place 10 minute drive down the road). Cosy pub, very traditional farmers pub and traditional pub food but done well: http://www.royaloakinn.org.uk/

This is more about the location than the food. Right in the middle of Dartmoor and great on a sunny day sitting on the benches outside with direct access to the moor and stunning views. Not very family friendly as children have to eat in the adjoining room that is not very attractive but the main pub is very old with a fire that has been burning since the 19th century (apparently).

Foggintor Quarry is about a half hour walk from the house along the old railway track (Walk out the back gate, down the footpath by the Dartmoor Brewery, right at the Whisky Distillery under construction and follow the old rail track) Foggintor is an abandoned stone quarry (Foggintor Stone was used to build London Bridge) and is a great place for a wild swim or to climb rocks or just to enjoy the scenery. Carry on along the old railway to reach Kings Tor and eventually Burrator. Great Mountain Bike route too.

Simply stunning location and a breathtaking walk from the house although it will take a good couple of hours one way. There are tow routes, along the old railway or a slightly tougher walk (due to uneven ground) but worth it for the views, taker the route past South Hessery Tor. If you are on mountain bikes, then follow the path past South Hessery Tor until you reach Nuns Cross and then descend the Bone Shaker as its known! Great trail all way to the lake which is very bumpy to start with but gets very fun further down with small jumps and nice winding dirt trails. https://www.komoot.com/smarttour/704118 There is a Discovery centre at the lake itself, worth checking the website as they often have kids activity days (due to Covid, all current events have been cancelled. Please check during your visit though). Visit the site also for maps of walks: https://www.swlakestrust.org.uk/burrator Please note there is no boating or swimming allowed in the lake.

Tipps für Reisende

Lokale Bräuche & Kultur
Livestock on the Moor
Please be aware of groups of cattle on the moor. Farmers will not put out dangerous animals but beware of getting too close to herds especially with calves. Keep dogs on leads and walk at a safe distance and if chased please let the dog go, they can out run a cow but humans usually can’t and it is most likely the dog they will chase. Please do not feed ponies, especially by the road as they will return to roads for more food and so therefore at risk of being knocked down. During summer months dogs should be on leads due to nesting birds. Farmers now have more powers against out of control dogs
Lokale Bräuche & Kultur
Visiting with your dog
This information is taken from Dartmoor National Park website, for detailed info please go to https://www.dartmoor.gov.uk/enjoy-dartmoor/planning-your-visit/visiting-with-your-dog When should you keep your dog on a lead? -lambing and ground nesting bird season 1 March – 31 July -When near livestock -During warm weather there is a risk of adders in the undergrowth Never let your dog chase animals or birds. A farmer can legally shoot a dog that is ‘worrying’ livestock Bag it and bin poo at home as there are no dog waste bins on Dartmoor.
