Parks & Nature
Ever seen the movie National Treasure 2? This lake was featured in that movie "behind" Mount Rushmore (it's not in reality) and even though there's not actually a fortune of gold to be found underneath, it's worth visiting. It's in Custer State Park so you will have to pay $30 to enter. The views are amazing. You can swim at the beach, hike around the lake, hike behind the lake (Sunday Gulch - be prepared to get wet since you climb next to and over the stream), hike the surrounding area. Photo opportunities abound.

My dad was a park ranger at Mount Rushmore for 30 years! My entire family was employed there at one point - I worked five years in the gift shop. Make sure you get some ice cream and hike the trail under the faces. If you're coming to our house you have to stop here!

The drive through Spearfish Canyon in the fall can't be beat, but it's beautiful at any time of year. Our favorite thing to do there is hike to Devil's Bathtub. Park at Cleopatra Place and hike up next to the stream about a mile until you reach a deep(er) pool with a natural water slide flowing into it. There is a sign above the pool with the name to indicate if you're in the right place. Be prepared to get wet as you hike through and cross the stream many times. This is our favorite family hike.

If you're going to Mount Rushmore, on your way out keep driving west and you'll come to this lake after a few miles. It's worth a stop to hike around the lake and take it in. You might even see some locals cliff jumping from the north east side - that's what I did in high school!

We often go to M Hill of hiking or mountain biking. It's right in the middle of town and it's amazing that you can get out in nature just five minutes from our house.

Located an hour north of Rapid City in Spearfish Canyon. Beautiful in the fall but still pretty in even winter. Walk next to Iron Creek and enjoy the limestone walls all around.

East of Keystone a few miles is Little Hippie Hole, a fun little hike next to a creek and ending at a large pool. If you were to keep hiking beyond the pool you'd get to the infamous Hippie Hole where you can cliff jump but that would be quite far (there is another way to get to Hippie Hole but I'm not sure how). Little Hippie Hole is a quick little jaunt and beautiful. The time we went we met and talked with some gold miners.

Entertainment & Activities
Located in the heart of downtown Rapid City, there are fountains to play in during the summer and ice skating in the winter. They also host musicians. Many quaint shops and eateries surround it on every side. Our kids love it for playing in the fountains and visiting Who's Toy Shop in the building next door. If you're here on a Thursday a trip downtown is well worth is for "Summer Nights." There's live music and entertainment for kids and tons of people. They wall off downtown so you can walk around and explore.
