Food Scene

The Latchmere is part of a small chain of South London pubs, most of which lie south of the river. It’s a spectacular building, showing some of the modernity that that has kept real ales and seafood boards relevant. Call it contrived, but you’ll find mighty burgers, steaks, and decent fish and chips – not that you should feel disinclined to go full ‘gastro’ with dishes like porcini and ricotta ravioli with walnut pesto on offer. Meat is sourced from their own farm in Hampshire; the atmosphere is warm and unpretentious. It’s cheery stuff.

Yes, another pub. But a pub that rolls happily along pulling a trailer of quiz nights, busy gardens, wood pigeon salads and salt and pepper squid. But hold on. The Lighthouse, which much must have spent a sizeable amount making it look the way it does, also boasts tea-smoked sea trout and crab linguine. Ultimately, it does that clever thing of getting the necessary steaks and fish and chips right while adding fun bits of colour, so that guests who do want to go off-piste won’t be disappointed. Good, adventurous beers come as standard.

Holy Cow, to go out on a limb, might be Battersea’s best restaurant. The food is spicy and authentic considered, miles and miles away from any middling mediocrity (and indeed, central London.) The parbat lamb is thick with courgettes and garlic, aromatic and sensuous; the murg dhansak properly fragrant and tangy; the biryanis taste like the ones found just north of Delhi. Holy Cow does Mughlai dining, the dishes of mediaeval India: when people talk of food being ‘worth the calories’, they mean — if you can add reason to such an irksome phrase — this. Exactly this.

Make no mistake, Fish in a Tie isn’t dashing or refined. Nor is it ‘London modern’ with hyper-local cheeses, distressed wood, and leather aprons. What it is is fun and affordable. The menu, while a little ... wavy at times, will on most occasions feature pleasing little dishes like crab in choux pastry (one of London’s early-adoption crab morsels), crayfish spaghetti, and tilapia fillet with dill sauce. For anyone who grew up in an ordinary English town or village, this is a must — it’s the equivalent of its best restaurant. Only, it’s in London.

Gastronhome began its life in Balham, but later moved up to Battersea — 2014 Balham wasn’t ready for west-end style eating, and probably still isn’t. The restaurant is so very French — rich terrines, steamed turbots, duck cooked two ways — that it’s not hard to imagine being in Dijon, sandstone buildings and all. It is, admittedly, more on the pricy side than much of Battersea’s culinary offer, but everywhere needs its Bob Bob Ricard; there might not be a champagne button here, but there is plenty of it.

Cartel in Battersea is a tequila and taqueria bar that celebrates the best flavours that Mexico has to offer. The venue's kitchen is busy plating up hand-pressed tacos that hit the spot - think pulled chicken cooked in Mezcal and slow-cooked beef brisket served with chorizo and radish. But in truth, it's the menu of tequila and Mezcal infused cocktails that's really caught our eye. This bar in Battersea is certain to become a favourite spot for the locals in no time.
