This is a must do. Perfect white sand bay with shallow sea entry. Huge expanse of sand and highly conserved machair grass and rare plants like orchids. Walk to the old pier or the deserted settlement above the bay. In peak season there is an ice cream shop in an upturned boat. There are public toilets here and parking off road areas. Up the hill is a brilliant sculpture trail through the woods with a small zip line, and there is a great cafe at the top with arts and crafts workshops and gallery.

Munro baggers and general walkers all like this mountain, it's also Mull's only munro. On a good day the views are phenomenal but often the summit has a halo of mist. Although it's not a particularly difficult climb, please ensure you dress appropriately for changeable weather and with strong boots, as it's partial scree and can be dangerous.

What a place. Take the small ferryboat from Ulva Ferry (30 mins drive from Salen) costing around £5 return. This is an adventure in itself, as the island is car free and walking is king. Wildlife and landscape photographers dream. The food here is brilliant. Daytime only, simple food, done well, serving fresher than fresh seafood like scallops, crab, massive prawns and more. The soups are inventive and delicious as are the baguettes and paninis, and the baking is devine. Go, go, go, it's a must!

Quiet hidden beaches

Local insider knowledge
This is a place you'd just drive through and wouldn't even take much of a glance, as there isn't anywhere to stop to admire the view. But, if you can, park near a small bridge, by a tree, near a small waterfall, you will see a gate on the sea side of the road. Walk through, closing the gate behind you, as there may be Highland cows, which are harmless enough (don't approach them though and keep dogs on leads) and the track takes you to a stunning, quiet sandy bay. Fantastic for swimming, snorkeling, sandwiches, sandcastles, seal spotting and sunbathing.
