Nasi 7 Benua, which means ‘rice of seven continents’, comprises seven types of local traditional rice, namely the classic nasi putih, off-white nasi lemak, orange nasi tomato, greyish nasi lemuni, yellow nasi minyak, lime green nasi kacang, and multi-coloured nasi hujan panas. Each portion of rice is about the size of a ping pong ball, arranged neatly like flower petals. The accompanying side dishes are common Malay cuisines & fiery curries to go with the rice!

Original Penang Kayu Nasi Kandar in Lebuh Nipah, Bukit Jambul is usually packed with customers. With origins dating back to the early days, Nasi Kandar remains a popular Southern Indian Muslim dish in Malaysia, but it is said the best Nasi Kandar food is still found in Penang, enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. The experience simply begins with ordering a plate of your preferred rice & the server will add in the dishes you have picked before drizzling a mixture of gravy. This is where you tell them that you want 'banjir' (flood of different curry gravies). Be it Nasi Kandar or different types of "Roti" that you are hungry for, this restaurant offers an extensive menu.

PISA Corner Cafe is a large hawker centre in Relau, Penang. It's located beside Jalan Tun Dr Awang, just opposite "The SPICE Arena", previously known as Penang International Sports Arena (PISA). This hawker centre has many hawker stalls. I like the Chee Cheong Fun, & the Peanut Pancake is pretty good, with it's crispiness at the corner/the edges. I've tried the Teluk Kumbar Mee Udang, it's quite tasty with fresh prawns. There are just too many hawker delights under one roof to try it all, maybe over multiple visits to discover what is good, and what's not! It's better to come here for dinner as it would be cooler in the evening/night & you can sit in the outer court.

For authentic Nyonya cuisine, this is one of the restaurant in Penang that you must try out. Nyonya cuisine is a blend or fusion of Malay & Chinese food. Nyonya refers to Straits-born Chinese female in the Peranakan culture. The interior of Perut Rumah is beautifully decorated with its collection of antique Peranakan crockery [the term Peranakan is most commonly used among the ethnic Chinese for those of Chinese descent also known as Straits Chinese]. I'd recommend that you order each Nyonya dish in small portion so that you can order different variety of Nyonya dishes to try out!

Just a stone's throw away from the mural art of Armenian Street, there is a small, quaint & absolutely cosy cafe cum art gallery. Stepping into the cafe is like going through a time portal where it reminds you of the Peranakan culture, every spot here can be a photo opportunity. Jawi House offers Jawi-Pernakan dishes with a touch of Western-fusion, some of the worth-mentioning signature dishes are Nasi Lemuni, Laksa Lemak and Roti Jala. The food is scrumptious. Do yourself a favour, come & eat here!

Parks & Nature

Want to escape the heat & humidity of tropical Penang? Then head for the hill. Penang Hill, or Bukit Bendera, at 830m high (2,750feet) above sea level, is located in Air Itam, about 6 km from George Town, & it's much cooler than the city below. Penang Hill is a popular hill resort & retreat since the 18th century. Getting to the top is easy, thanks to the upgraded modern & fast funicular train which whisks visitors from the station at the foot of the hill to the top in a matter of minutes. Check out the many trails, walk & gardens at Penang Hill. Tired? Then try the Soursop fruit, with its sweet flesh & distinctive flavor, served on shaved ice at the food court on top of the hill.

The Penang National Park is located on the north-western tip of the island at Teluk Bahang. There are 2 main hiking tracks through the forest & likely you'll need 2 separate day trips to do both. 1 hiking trail takes you along the coastline to Monkey Beach (Teluk Duyung), then on a steep climb up to an elevation of 227m to Muka Head Lighthouse. The other takes you over the headland to Kerachut Beach (Pantai Kerachut) where you will find a rare meromictic lake (a lake of layers where sea & fresh water do not mix) & the Penang Turtle Sanctuary. The tracks through the jungle are often steep, wet & tricky with lots of roots, tree trunks & rocks to climb over, so wear proper footwear.

Sightseeing

If you want to see life as it was in Penang, say about 40/50 years ago, then this is the place to head for. Literally translated to mean “The Back of the Island” from it's Malay name, Balik Pulau stretches from the north-western tip of the island immediately past the touristy area of Teluk Bahang to south-west of Teluk Kumbar, covering about half the island. From mile after mile of serene padi fields, broken only by the odd group of swaying coconut palms which pierce the neatly-laid out flat, green squares, to durian & nutmeg farms; from clean, deserted beaches with traditional fishing villages to rustic villages with old Malay wooden houses to experience village life as it was back then.

Fort Cornwallis is a fort in George Town, built by the British East India Company in late 18th century & named after the Governor-General in Bengal, Charles Cornwallis. It's the largest standing fort in Malaysia, located next to the Esplanade & the Victoria Memorial Clock. The fort's walls, roughly 10 feet high, are laid out in star-like formation. A stroll along the perimeters takes roughly 10 mins. Inside, one can still see some of the original structures built over a century ago, including a chapel, prison cells, that were once used as barracks, a munitions storage area, a harbour light once used to signal incoming ships, the original flagstaff & several old bronze canons.

Built in 1930 by the British as a fortress against Japanese attacks, it was overtaken by Jap forces during WWII when they surprised the Brits with inland invasion rather than the sea. While historical hand-me-down accounts vary, it is believed that the Japanese garrison is a butcher house for civilians & prisoners-of-war. The location of Penang War Museum is enough to set goose pimples running amok. It sits on Bukit Hantu, which means ‘Ghost Hill’ because local folklore is apparently rife with ghostly sightings & encounters in the vicinity. It could also be the result of active imagination due to the fort’s dark past as a purported Jap torture camp during WWII that the hill got its name!
