If you're Walking...

Here are a few places you can get to close by
Walk-up counter inside for the jaw-dropping pastry case or to order; we love the breakfast sandwich and avocado toast! (the coffee is actually just so-so) Dog friendly patio and lots of great people watching.

This place isn't known for its food as much as for being the place made famous by the Robert Blake murder trial. But the food is good! And the real draw is the piano bar upstairs or the speakeasy in back. A lot of notable TV talent lives in the neighborhood and will do gigs in here, or hang out in the wings, and it makes for great entertainment.

Entrance to the LA river wash down the stairs around this address! It's a good little run from the house, down to the fenced path above the concrete riverbed. The whole neighborhood is down here with their dogs most days ... off leash is okay, and if there is an unfriendly dog down there I haven't met 'em. You can come back up at Dilling street (there's an 'offramp') and walk back home through the neighborhood.

Speakeasy style upscale bar with dinner too, Vitello's menu. Get a reservation for this place and get all dolled up for a night out in the neighborhood! This is just a few blocks from our place and a local favorite. Attached to Vitello's restaurant which also has a music and comedy club upstairs.

OMG, the best. Upstairs at Vitello's ... make a reservation here, and at the Speakeasy downstairs. You can bar-hop and have dinner at three venues in the same building. The music (piano bar, and sometimes 3 piece jazz band) is on point for the 50s, the speakeasy is a throwback to the 30s and the main dining room is the oughts ... yeah, 2000-ish but the food is good and it's great vibes.

Get the carnitas!! They aren't the best tacos you've ever eaten, but they're RIGHT THERE on the corner and they beat the heck out of Henry's Tacos across the intersection (unless the classic American hard shell tacos are your thing) ...they also have breakfast burritos.

Hiking!

Want to go somewhere with your dog? Or just get a little exercise and a nice view? We got ya ...
Weekdays are the best, free parking til noon! On weekends you have to get in and out before 10am or it's $15/hour parking. There are a few Hollywood sign views along the way and it's just freaking AWESOME. Go up to Mount Hollywood peak, it's where we got married .. it's now called the Tom LaBonge Panorama, for the city council member who actually officiated our wedding. Awesome spot, highest point in Los Angeles, and our favorite spot in the whole city.

This is where the locals go! Part of it is off-leash for dogs. Breathtaking (literally, there's a defibrillator at the top) views and lots of people watching. Overheard conversations and minor star sightings are the best here. Watch people do yoga and hike with tiny dogs. Parking is a big problem tho ... there's a little bit of parking on Mulholland as you approach, but READ THE SIGNS CAREFULLY and go early) but worth it !!

Rideshare dropoff point for the Magic Tree/Hollywood Sign hike! You can also park on the big hill that goes down to the Hollywood reservoir … another nice running spot (but no dogs are allowed on the reservoir trail) Head up Wonderview drive and follow the Wonderview trail to the Magic Tree, then head east across the ridge line to the peak of Mount Lee behind the Hollywood Sign.

The parking lot on Laurel canyon is a pay lot, if you can park on Laurel Canyon before you get to the entrance, do it! This is a shady hike with trees. Not too many sweeping vistas but it’s nice and there is a dog water fountain at the top.

This is a totally fun place to go for a picnic and a hike up to Bee Rock or, after a rain, the graffiti falls and pools (34.133366ºn, 118.29131ºW). Easy parking even on Sundays, and there are picnic tables in the old abandoned zoo enclosures.

NO DOGS ALLOWED at all ... but this is a good 3.3 mile running/walking loop with easy parking on Lake Hollywood drive that has city and Hollywood sign views, with the Lake Hollywood Dam right in the middle of it.

A few places a little farther out but worth the trek …
Awesome breakfast place, the fresh fruit always has something you've never seen before in it ... and the Ned's Shreds instead of hash browns? You won't miss potatoes at all. Get there early because it gets crowded!

This is an LA landmark. The original beef dip sandwich, might not knock you over as the best thing you’ve ever eaten but once you’ve had one you’ll always crave THAT sandwich. Right across from Union Station and a regular spot for baseball fans before games in Chavez Ravine.

We love the guy who runs this place and the food is great. Try the fool hummus … spicy fava beans on top of hummus, and ask for extra pita and pickled turnips. A good place to stop on the way home after a Hollywood Sign or Runyon Canyon hike.

The thing about Porto's is the guava thingys and the potato rolls. Also the meat pies. People in office buildings around LA don't bring donuts in, they bring Porto's boxes with these things in them. They're really good and hard to describe; once you've had one you will crave one later and it's the only place you can get them. You'll see the boxes at airports from now on and know the travelers have come back to LA for ... Porto's. Great cuban sandwiches too!

REAL Italian ... pricey and great pasta, a lot of stuff flown in from Italy (you know this type of place!) it's in the new fancy complex that has Eruwhon and Equinox in it. Hand made pasta on site, great if you wish you had come to Italy instead of Studio City.

ONLY OPEN FRI, SAT, SUN This is a black-owned business that is a SLAM DUNK for best croissant between here and Paris. Owner and former French basketball player Laurent "Lou" Correa also serves those simple baguette sandwiches you only usually get when you're in Europe and wonder why you don't eat them all the time. Now you can! Well, at least on weekends.
