My favorite restaurants serving local food

In the nearby city Sonderborg you will find many restaurants and cafes. You can have pizza everywhere on the globe, so here I will give you a few recommendations to local food :-)
The restaurant is by the sea, Alssund, and during summer you can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful view and life along Alssund. Colosseum serves lunch and dinner, and is known for its Kong Fiddes livret (DKR 160), said to be the Danish king Frederik IX favorite food when in the summer he spent time with the royal family at the castle in Gråsten. I find that "King Frederiks favorite dinner" is a huge portion and I almost guarantee you that you won't need more food that day!

Sønderjylland is famous for the regions "Sønderjysk Kaffebord" (cakes and coffee). At Den gamle Kro in Gråsten, 10 km fra Brunsnæs, you can taste as many as 29 different cakes, many of them local, such as Brødtort, Striftort og Stopkach. Sønderjysk Kagebord is VERY popular so you will have to make a reservation at the Kro home page. Sønderjysk Kaffebord is served each month on the second Sunday and in July also every Monday. You really should try! Probably you will also enjoy the traditional building.

Sundhalle is a local pub and restaurant in Sønderborg, Dybbøl. I would say that not many tourists go here. They serve traditional Danish food, please notice that you have to order one day ahead! We have had the local speciality "Solæg" here and the "Stegt flæsk med persillesovs". You can also just go for at beer of course.

You will find the Michelin one-star restaurant “Syttende” (17th) here. I never went, but I had dinner in the restaurant Freja in the same building. Dinner was fantastic and for a more reasonable price.

Local food to cook or bring home

In the southern part of Jutland we are proud of our local food. Here is food that you can look for or maybe prepare yourself on the grill.
Slagter Nielsen is famous in the area for their high-quality food. Here you can buy the local specialities "Kålpølser" or "Ringriderpølser". Both are sausages. Kålpølser traditionally eaten with kål/cabbage, there is no cabbage in the sausage itself! Ringriderpølser refer to the local event "RIngridning" which is a kind of riding competition. You can buy the sausages also in supermarkets, but we prefer them from Slagter Nielsen. Slagter Nielsen is 36 km from the tiny yellow house.

At Ryesminde Mosteri you can buy apple juice pressed from locally grown apples. The locals bring their apples from private gardens and take home juice probably not produced from their own apples but still very taste. You can ofcourse buy juice without bringing apples. No conservation or e-numbers in this juice! Ryesminde Mosteri is 24 km from the tiny yellow house.

At Hestehavegård Frugtplantage you can buy many kinds of vegetables and fruit that they grow at the farm. The farm is located in wonderful surroundings a Kær Halvø, where you could - by the way - go for at picnic! For opening hours look at their home page.

Fishing

I don't fish but I will give you a few reccomdations as to places where I hear that you can catch fish!
First of all, you should know that in DK you must have a "fisketegn" - a written permission to fish. You can buy a fisketegn digitally at www.fisketegn.dk A single day costs DKR 40, one week DKR 130 and a year DKR 185. My son fished cod and herring at Egernsund Bridge. Locals also fish near the Sonderborg Slot /castle and of course at Brunsnæs Beach. I wish you happy fishing!

Places to go!

I can recommend many places to go on a trip from the tiny yellow house. Personally, I enjoy the peace and quietness around Brunsnæs, but here is my list for sightseeing.
Ideal for families with kids! Danfoss Universe is a hands-on science park in Nordborg, headquarteres of the huge Danfoss concern. The science park is 34 km from the tiny yellow house. You can spend a day there.

LEGOLAND is about 1 1/2 hours drive away from Brunsnæs, but I think both adults and kids will enjoy it . Billund is home of the LEGO-brick. Personally, I think the entrance fee is high, but my kids and I ALWAYS thought it was worth the money. Have a look at their home page. You could also look at LEGO House, the newest attraction in Billund.

Nature hints!

Here you find my favorite places in the nature surrounding Brunsnæs.
The Gendarmstien is a path where the walking police used to controll the border to Germany. It runs along Flensborg Fjord/Førde from Kruså to Høruphav on Als. The nature is absolutely beautiful. You will find the path when you go down to the Brunsnæs beach. The path has a blue sign with a gendarm on it. You can choose to walk towards Broager (right) or towards Sønderborg. Be prepared that some places you will have to walk on the beach.

You can bring your morning coffee to the beach less than 100 meter from the tiny house. At the beach you find table/bench.
