This is a place you have to google to really get the full low down. It’s pretty astounding. The Integratron is a historical structure — a resonant tabernacle and energy machine sited on a powerful geomagnetic vortex near Joshua Tree. Magnetometers read a significant spike in the earth’s magnetic field in the center of the Integratron. Sound baths are available for private or public groups but have to be booked in advance.

While making your way through Joshua Tree, visit the home prison of a man who never existed. According to some very detailed lore constructed by artist Eames Demetrios, a religious leader named Krblin Jihn lived in this cabin under house arrest after a rival sect, the Notgeon, defeated his Jihn Wranglikans in a long war. While living in the Kabin, he completed two translations of the Bible and the Kmmentaries n Matthew. (By the way, the Jihn Wranglikans forbid using the letters “c” and “o.”) Don’t worry: You can brush up on the mythology before entering the Kabin (where all writings are in the Jihn Wranglikan dialect). There’s an English explanation on a site marker just outside the house. The world-building is so extensive that you can even glimpse a structure known as Kwale—the Jihn Wranglikan Mount Hermon. The Kabin is part of Demetrios’ “Kcymaerxthaere” project, an “ongoing work of 3 dimensional fiction” that tells its stories in text plaques and, sometimes, “historic sites” like the Kabin (which, in 2004, became the first such site dedicated as part of the project). Kcymaerxthaere constructs an alternative universe along 29 major “rezhns;” Demetrios likens it to “a novel where every page is in a different city.” The plaques and sites number in the hundreds and continue to expand, while the Kabin stands as one of the most audacious examples of Joshua Tree’s famous artistic culture. You can learn more about the Jihn Wranglikans and Kcymaexthaere here. Know Before You Go From the town of Joshua Tree, travel north on Sunburst St./Ave. Turn right on Crestview Drive. Go through the neighborhood to the end of the street and turn right on Border Avenue (dirt road). The site will be on your left, about 1.5 blocks south of Crestview.

The town of Idyllwild is about an hour and a half from our home and an exquisite day trip if you have the time. From the 1930s to 1950s, Idyllwild was a center for the production of "knotty pine furniture", the fine log furniture made in the Arts and Crafts style. Under the direction of Charles "Selden" Belden, the furniture was produced by the Idyllwild Pinecraft Furniture Company and, later, C. Selden Belden Idyllwild Pinecraft. The furniture is now "collectible" and can be found in many Idyllwild houses and cabins. In the late 1960s and 1970s, there was an influx of hippies in Idyllwild, which changed the nature of the town and alarmed many longtime residents. Timothy Leary lived on a ranch in nearby Garner Valley, with the ranch serving as the headquarters of The Brotherhood of Eternal Love. Currently the ranch encampment in Garner Valley is operated by Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times as a year-round retreat for children with cancer and their families. From 1974 to 1979, Idyllwild hosted the Idyllwild Bluegrass Invitational, then the only bluegrass music festival in Southern California (it was inspired by the Julian Banjo-Fiddle Contest, which still goes on today on the third weekend in September). Idyllwild also hosted the Bear Flag Festival in the 1950s through the 1970s, a festival to honor California's Bear Flag and to mark the passing of the grizzly bear from California, the last of which, according to local legend, was killed at Hurkey Creek in Garner Valley. There are so many beautiful hiking trails and great restaurants/ shops to visit. It’s the kind of day you might want to plan if you’re staying for 4 or 5 days. Really worth the drive and the high altitude is exhilarating! About a mile high!

This gallery is really interesting. I whole heartedly recommend going to the bathroom in the glass outhouse. It’s a very special experience! Look up online for hours/ art exhibits. Here is a review by someone: This was definitely one of the reasons I took a trip to Palm Springs. I have been reading about this wonderful little Gallery in the middle of nowhere. But what really peaked my interest was this working Glass Outhouse. This location did not disappoint upon my arrival I was greeted by the owner a wonderful wonderful lady. She told me the story of how she was an artist when she was younger and she couldn't get a start because you couldn't put your artwork in a gallery unless you were already in a gallery. So she decided to turn her rabbit Coupe into an art gallery. She wanted to have a place to display art for new artists. The gallery's top notch the artists that are displayed are amazing. They switch out the artist every 8 weeks or so. They closed down in July and open back up in September due to the Heat. On the first Saturday of every month they have live music with different artist display some new art. Grounds are full of art exhibits and Pathways leading to all of the art exhibits you could truly spend hours here. I was fortunate enough to see her new water tower that they painted like a fish tank super cool. Butt (hahaha) I got to say sitting down naked inside of a glass outhouse doing your business just looking out over the desert and no one can see in is pretty cool. they even have a fridge with cold beverages. Give this place a shot if you're passing through 29 Palms definitely worth the stop. The address is: 77575 29palms highway, twentynine palms, ca Hours:Tuesday -Sunday 1-5pm (closed Monday)

Although Amboy was first settled in 1858, the town was not established until 1883. Lewis Kingman, a locating engineer for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, created the town as the first of a series of alphabetical railroad stations that were to be constructed across the Mojave Desert. The name was probably taken from a location in the eastern United States. In 1926, Amboy became a boom town after the opening of U.S. Route 66. In 1938, Roy's Motel and Café opened and prospered due to its isolated location on the route. By 1940, Amboy's population had increased to 65. Its growth was tied not only to tourists, but also to the Santa Fe Railroad over which freight trains still run today between Kingman, Arizona and the BNSF Railway Barstow, California yard. During the Great Depression and World War II, tourism declined nationally. But the remaining travelers' need for lodging, meals and gasoline kept the town busy. The town remained this way until the opening of Interstate 40 in 1973, which bypassed Amboy. The town has a total of 10 surviving buildings and a population of far fewer than the advertised 20. According to the Los Angeles Times, the town's population is approximately four. About an hour from our home. Just type in “Amboy crater” in your phone maps. It’s a beautiful unique drive not many people take.

Joshua tree hiking and driving in the park

Of course. You can look up different hikes to take once you are in the park. Some great ones are the Ryan hike (if you are extremely fit and want an amazing workout). It’s all uphill to the top but the views are sensational. Bring lunch and have a picnic once there. I think it’s about 3 or 4 miles total. The 29 palms entrance to the park is only 10 miles from our house, and then maybe another 10 miles to Ryan. Another incredible hike is the lost horse mine trail. Once in the park (from 29 palms entrance) take keys view road, past cap rock, to lost horse trail road which will be about half mile to your left. Drive down the dirt road about a half mile and there you will see the sign posts. This is about 4 1/2 miles total but kid friendly, just a slight upgrade of a climb on the way to the old mine (which was one of the largest producing mines of its day and still in tact), and smooth sailing all the way back to your car. You can also check out the AllTrails app for a ton of hikes in whatever area you decide to roam.

The Arch Rock Trailhead is in the Twin Tanks Parking Lot. The trail looks like a lollipop; the route heads in a straight line for .6-miles from the parking lot to the east, where it becomes a short loop. Hikers can take the loop in either direction, but hiking it counterclockwise is recommended because it is easier to spot the namesake arch from that direct. The loop is a short .2-miles and leads hikers back to the straightaway trail to the parking lot. The arch is roughly .1-mile into the loop section and is a popular photography spot. The loop also has educational wayside signs along the trail describing the unique geology and characteristics in the area. The first part of the trail is mostly sandy, whereas the loop section is mostly rocky. This trail has no shade and no cell service. Summer hikers should start this trail before 10 am and bring plenty of water. Always check the weather forecast before heading into the park and consider changing plans if the weather conditions are too extreme.

This is such a great trail! You can look up directions from your phone or on the all trails app. It is under lost horse mine loop and says it’s 6 miles but that’s if you keep going past the mine. To get to the mine and back is 4 miles. The story goes that an old cowboy named Johnny Lang had lost his horse one fine dusty day while camping. He went searching high and low into the hills of what is now Joshua Tree. He met a man who told him of a “rich claim” and the man sold it to Johnny for 1000$ in the late 1800’s. Johnny named the mine “Lost horse”. To reduce the chances of being killed by the McHaney gang or having his claim jumped, Johnny took three partners. After filing their claim, they set up a two-stamp mill and began processing gold. He ended up making millions and from 1894-1931 it produced 10,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 ounces of silver. The lost horse mine was one of the only mines to produce any real gold for its owner. In 1895 J.D. Ryan bought the rights to the area and set up the mill that is currently there today. The mine stopped producing in 1905 when the miners lost the vein they were mining from. Johnny never did find that horse but who cares... Talk about not looking a gift horse in the mouth!

It began long ago when rain drops accumulated in tiny depressions and started to erode the granite. As more rock eroded, more water accumulated, leading to more erosion until, as time passed, two hollowed-out eye sockets formed and the rock began to resemble a skull. Located along the main east-west park road, Skull Rock is a favorite stop for park visitors. A parking spot is located just across the road from the rock. For those wishing to stretch their legs, a 1.7-mile nature trail begins either just across from the entrance to Jumbo Rocks Campground or inside the campground, across from the amphitheater.

From Park Boulevard, the hike up Ryan Mountain looks a bit daunting and relatively unspectacular, but this hike is all about the reward from the top, where the views extend 360 degrees out over the park. This is a relatively strenuous, three-mile up-and-down hike, with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. The exposed trail offers little to no shade and is less than exciting as it follows a barren hillside up to the top, but from the summit, at 5,457 feet, the view is fantastic, making the effort worthwhile. Bring lunch and make it a picnic.

Barker Dam Loop visits a small foreign-looking reservoir within the Wonderland of Rocks in Joshua Tree National Park. Hikers of all abilities will enjoy this level 1.5-mile hike. The water can all but disappear during the dry season, so make a point to visit this trail in the winter and spring. The well-marked loop is easy to follow and easy to hike. From the parking lot, take the trail heading northwest toward Barker Dam. There are two well-marked trails leaving from this trailhead, so be sure do not take the other trail heading northeast toward Wall Street Mill. Tall mounds of boulders rise on either side, and then suddenly, the trail emerges along the shore of a small blue lake. The stagnant waters look out of place in this desert landscape, but the site is quite calm and worthy of a relaxing break from trekking in the desert.

Split Rock Loop Trail in Joshua Tree National Park is a moderate loop trail. It’s not as trafficked as other trails in the park (like Hidden Valley or Barker Dam), but offers similar beauty (think rock formations, Joshua Trees, and incredible views).

Wall Street Mill is a moderate two mile out and back hike to an old mill site. This mill was used to process gold from local mining operations. At the end of the trail the homestead and mill still stands and there are several old rusted cars around the area. Please leave all artifacts for future visitors to enjoy as well. The trailhead starts just east of the Barker Dam area from a dirt parking lot off of Queen Valley Road. This trail has little shade and no cell service. Always check the weather forecast before heading into the park and consider changing plans if the weather conditions are too extreme.

This short desert hike visits a gold mine that operated profitably for decades on land now protected by Joshua Tree National Park. An overlook across from the mine is reachable via an easy 0.7-mile round trip trail, and the excursion can be extended to 1.6 miles by crossing a canyon to the mine itself. Begin hiking on the nearly level Desert Queen Mine Trail (just to the right of the bathrooms at the trailhead for Desert Queen Mine and Pine City). Not far from the start, the trail passes an old stone foundation with a bed frame still inside. These ruins are a few hundred feet from the trail, easy to spot, and worth exploring. After a third of a mile, the trail comes to an overlook on the edge of a small canyon opposite the site of Dawn Queen Mine. The mine was operational from 1895 until 1961, and the remains are well preserved.

Lucky Boy Vista Trail offers a level 2.5-mile round trip hike to a modest overlook at the site of an old mine. The trailhead is a half-mile from the Pine City – Desert Queen Mine Trailhead and easy to find. There are no junctions along the trail to be concerned with. From the parking area, hike southeast across the desert on an easy track that climbs just 125 feet over 1.25 miles. Small rock formations border the trail, but otherwise the desert surroundings are open and sprawling. Turn around for a view of Mount San Gorgonio, the highest mountain in Southern California, rising above the desert floor. Pass around a metal gate at the halfway point and continue through the desert of Joshua trees, yucca, and cacti.

A majority of the park is pure wilderness and ideal for horseback riding. About 250 miles of equestrian trails run through the park, most of which are well marked and easy to follow. Most horseback riders tend to favor the trails in the Black Rock Canyon area along with those near the western entrance to the park. Trails are across open desert, along canyon floors, and up and over small passes. Note that water is not available anywhere along any trails. The park has two campgrounds, Ryan and Black Rock, with areas set aside for horses and stock animals. At Black Rock is a special horse camp, which can be reserved in advance. Ryan is first come, first served. Look them up for more information to book horseback riding.

The bookstore was a retirement project for tattoo artist Cliff Ingram, who moved to the desert town after selling his L.A. shop, Sunset Strip Tattoos, in 1985. The pioneering Chicago and L.A. artist lent his nickname, Raven, to the venture. Ingram operated the store at 69225 29 Palms Highway until his death in 2001. His partner, Pierre Mitchell, kept it going another dozen years before selling in 2013 to Patty O’Toole, whose retirement dream was likewise to own a used bookstore. I have been coming here since the famous tattoo artist Cliff owned it and it is still as cool as ever. One of my favorite used bookstores. Really love this place and only 1.5 miles west from our house.

Food scene

The owners, Jasmine & Lorenzo, were born and raised in Rome, Italy. They know Italian food, and understand that what guests are looking for is so much more than a good meal. Italian hospitality is renowned all over the world and for good reason. In Italy, when you invite guests to step into your home, they become part of the family. And that is precisely what we are creating here. Spaghetti Western is an extension of our home, where each and every single guest can enjoy an all around immersive experience. Every detail, from the design, to the music, to the plate of pasta and glass of wine, will be curated masterfully to guarantee an unforgettable experience. You may ask, “why Spaghetti Western”? Jasmine grew up in the countryside outside of Rome in a small town called Casali di Mentana. Ennio Morricone was her neighbor. Her husband Lorenzo grew up in Trastevere, in the same neighborhood as Sergio Leone. They are also both musicians and have been in love with the “Spaghetti Western” genre since they were little. They ate, slept, and breathed that culture, tradition, and style. Ever since they moved out here to the “Far West”, they dreamed of merging these two aesthetics and creating a world in which the two blended seamlessly. Their dream is finally coming true here in Morongo Valley. Spaghetti Western is not just a restaurant, it’s a way of life, a philosophy, where guests will be transported by a genuine Western Italian experience. As musicians and performers, they also look forward to providing high quality entertainment for their guests. The restaurant has a stage where both local artists and performers traveling through the desert will be featured. From soft background music during dinner service, to special concerts, there will be a range of events everyone can enjoy. Spaghetti Western will become a home away from home where both locals and visitors can build community and create new, unforgettable memories. Here you can count on impeccable customer service, excellent music, enjoy a delicious meal made with organic ingredients, and get a taste of authentic Italian hospitality. Food brings us together. At Spaghetti Western you are not just a guest, you are family.

There are a few true wonders of the world, where merely entering a space creates a portal of cosmic proportions. There is the Waverly in New York, Musso Frank’s in Hollywood, certain vortexes in Sedona, Arizona, El Greco in Toledo, Spain. And then there is Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneer town. I have been coming to Pappy’s for over 25 years and have witnessed remarkable transformations that continue to stun me, while this establishment still manages to keep the integrity of the original seed and vision planted so long ago. Pappys is not a noun, it’s a verb, and the kinetic energy is palpable. Situated in a hauntingly mysterious pioneer town (at an elevation of 4000 feet) unveiled is the entire Milky Way galaxy: coyotes howling in the distance and hoot owls swooping down at eye level. Then you walk into Pappy’s and that’s when things get interesting. A lawless freedom sweeps through the soul and do with it what you will. A cross between an 1800’s saloon where you’d see Billie the kid throwing back a whiskey and women in petticoats dancing on tables, to the most impressive eclectic performers ever to grace the stage. It’s one of my favorite venues for bands, some famous and some about to be famous. That would be enough. But then there’s the food which is absolutely delectable. Anthony Bourdain apparently thought so because he shot an episode here with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. The bartenders are something to behold, like samurai; tough, beautiful and when you catch a smile the whole night is worth it. The weight staff, hosts, and management are truly impressive, especially because the place is jam packed from the moment it’s doors are cracked open until the dust settles and the last patron has stumbled out. Whether it’s Robert Plant or Paul McCartney making surprise appearances; the high desert’s own Mojave Lords, L.A.’s own X or Cherry Glazerr, or the the deeper roots of the locals who have been here since time began, like the creosote growing in the desert, this is truly one of the most precious jewels this side of the Mississippi and the other side for that matter. Did I mention I love this place?

This is one of my favorite bars/restaurant/ live music venues in the world. Yes, the world 🌎 It is located about 25 miles east of our property and by the time you get there you are in another level of reality altogether. Backwoods Kentucky? I don’t know, I’ve never been to Kentucky. But this place is really quite amazing. The proprietors are Laura Sibley and Kevin Bone, who are also incredible musicians and chefs. When Laura was 15 years old, one night she had a dream that her mom opened up a very special restaurant, bar. She told her mom the dream and her mom decided to open the restaurant, based entirely on the dream! Did Laura dream the future or did she dream the future into existence? Highly recommend.

I adore this place! The playlist alone sealed the deal, but their shrimp plate knocked the socks off me. I believe they serve dinner 7 nights a week starting at 4pm and are opened for lunch at 12pm on Saturday and Sunday. Such a great place to go on the weekend at lunch and watch planes fly by ✈️ That part was so exciting! Here’s a quote from another enthusiast below. “AMAZING. Hands down the best place to dine in the Joshua Tree area. The food is insane - best steak I think I've ever had anywhere (and I've dined at some of the best restaurants around the world). Other highlights were the lettuce cups, the spinach artichoke dip, the burger and the shrimp. There's a warm, inviting atmosphere where you can sit at the bar, have a martini, watch the sunset amongst the mountains and view the small planes flying in and out of the little airport. I found out there's a jazz band on Sunday evenings, can't wait to go back!”

This is an interesting place to visit with a long history. Originally called Institute of mental physics, here’s the lowdown. Food for thought is the restaurant you can visit while here. I would go to the website for hours of operation. MENTALPHYSICS is an experiential method of self-realization that teaches the oneness of life embodied in all substance, energy and thought. Edwin John Dingle, known as Ding Le Mei to over 220,000 students of the Science of Mentalphysics worldwide, was born in England in 1881. He later became a journalist establishing a publishing empire in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Risking his life on both a mapping expedition and spiritual quest across China in the early 1900’s, he entered into Tibet. There he discovered the mysteries of Asia and India, secret wisdom, passed along from master to pupil, from wise man to wise man, for countless ages, beginning, perhaps, six or seven thousand years ago. In his quest for spiritual knowledge he became one of the first Westerners to enter a Tibetan Monastery. It was there that he was recognized as a highly evolved soul, and therefore stayed to study for a long period of time. For 20 years he traveled through China, India and Tibet. Upon his return to the West, he began sharing the teachings and practices he had learned in Tibet, first in New York (1927) and later in Los Angeles, California ( where he founded the Institute of Mentalphysics in 1928). The Institute was then moved to Yucca Valley, California, the land acquired in 1941. Ding Le Mei (Edwin J. Dingle) combined the spiritual wisdom of the East with religious knowledge of the West to form a Super Yoga. The teachings of Mentalphysics combine ancient universal truths, breathing exercises, diet control, recognizing and working with one's individual chemistry, exercises, and meditation. New students are introduced to the universal laws which, if followed, are believed to lead to mastery of oneself and all of Life. Some of the tales weaved by Edwin John Dingle’s journey (including traveling to Tibet and that he was recognized as “a very evolved soul”) are suspect, but let’s roll with it anyway. It’s cute that he tried. The Science of Mentalphysics teaches that Prana or life energy, is a substance, a subtle form of energy that both animates life and carries intelligence. It is universally distributed and is what the Soul uses to communicate with. Using the mind-substance, as activated through the Breath of Life – 8 Key Breaths, one is able to activate the creative powers within. Students are also instructed in meditation, which leads toward tapping universal wisdom and development as a mystic. As a mystic one understands truth, life, and one's potential through experience. In 1941 the Mentalphysics Spiritual Teaching and Retreat Center was dedicated in Yucca Valley (now Joshua Tree). The Center, which is on 400+ acres of pristine desert land is used today not only by students of Mentalphysics, but by many retreat groups seeking a quiet, peaceful place for spiritual contemplation and training. The retreats for the Mentalphysics teachings are also held here on this sacred land. Please be sure to visit the many vortices and note that the buildings and other structures are all designed by Ding Le Mei, Frank Lloyd Wright, (and son) Lloyd Wright, using sacred geometry. The energy here is unique and healing.

This is an incredible venue that many travelers aren’t familiar with because it isn’t advertised. Bobby Furst is an artist and he has created a venue for live music in a remarkable setting. I would look up furstwurld events on event brite for a schedule. Many local and international musicians play here and the visit alone is worth it. It’s right near the park entrance in Joshua Tree. A cool side note: Bobby Furst’s dad was an archeologist and filmmaker. Furst was the author of many books, publishing primarily on indigenous Mesoamerican history, art, and culture, as well as shamanistic cultural practices and Native North American art. His dissertation, "Shaft Tombs, Shell Trumpets, and Shamanism," remains an important study on pre-Hispanic West Mexican history, art, and culture. Also, his research and work with the Huichol people in Northwest Mexico resulted in a new artistic medium for the culture, known as Huichol yarn painting. He also worked with Carlos Castanedas while an archeologist student at UCLA in the 60’s.

This is a new tea/coffee shop/ bar that opened about 2 miles east of us on 29palms highway. They have cappuccino’s in the morning and tequila at night. Or vice versa. Lookup for hours. If you have an urge to venture out yet stay close to home this could be the place. Very eclectic crowd.

Wild cockles in sea salt brine? Biodynamic zen bunni coffee? Breathe lung tonic tea? Raw heirloom cacao, fish broth or crunchy naked sprouted almond butter? They have things you didn’t even know you wanted. And you might still not want. But this place is a fascinating store to visit for original items/ gifts.

Don’t let this boring shopping mall fool you. Vons is where it’s at, not to mention one of the only games in town for groceries. There is a vegetarian/ vegan section as well that you might not find at other options like stater bros. About 20 minutes west of us (my experience is that ice cream stays cold if you’re going back to our house after shopping here).
