Beaches, hot ponds, tide pools, and waterfalls

These are some local places we recommend for beach swimming, exploring tide pools, hot pond access, and waterfalls, all within a one hour drive. There are many other beach spots and water ways to explore as well. We’d be happy to recommend more if you’re interested.
Visit Pohoiki to see the results of the latest lava flow, a new black sand beach and incredible lava fields. See the powerful effects of the lava and how it blocked the boat ramp’s access to the ocean. Head down the street to the left as you come up to the parking lot to view how the lava came right down the street, covering a park bench and stopping right before the showers. There are 3 thermal pools at this beach. The one connected to the boat ramp, one behind that, and a smaller hot pond called Queen’s bath behind and to the right of the second thermal pool. Things to consider: the ocean is rough here and probably not the place to swim in the waves. There is no shade on the beach and it gets hot in the afternoon. You can hike around on the new lava field but be careful. A’a lava can be crumbly and unstable.

Beautiful beach with safe places to swim. Nice sandy areas on the left and 6 large sea turtles that live in the water on the right (facing the ocean). Go at low tide and you will most likely get to see the turtles. Great place for kids to snorkel. Beautiful grassy area and bathrooms/showers available. This is one of our top favorite places to visit in Hilo.

This beach is great for its protected cove and sandy bottom. Often called Keiki beach because its the perfect place to let kids play, yet it is still a great place for adults to enjoy.

Fun place to sightsee. Beautiful views and plenty of grassy areas to make an afternoon fun by the water. There is a large stone structure here that people like to climb and jump off into the ocean from. There are also bathrooms and showers here. This is an impressive waterfall that is relatively easy to access, even with kids. Bring some blow up float devices and enjoy floating around and swimming the large body of water. Hike up to the top of the fall for a great view. You can jump off from the top or a lower spot into the water if you’re into that kind of thing and feel brave. I watched 2 people do it and teenagers easily jumped in the water from a lower point. Wai'ale Falls Trail is a 0.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Hilo, Hawaii that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Park just past the bridge on the downstream side. Trailhead is on the north side of the stream. Watch the trail closely at times, sometimes taking the route closer to the water is not where you want to be. Eventually trail will open up and you'll be on top of the waterfall that was visible from the bridge. Continue boulder hopping and you can see another small waterfall. It’s a great trail for those looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure. The trail is a bit overgrown, so it can be hard to find, but hang to the right at the first fork and head into the jungle. Eventually you’ll get out to the top of the falls and you will see some great views. Parking is on the shoulder of the road. No facilities. Water shoes are useful and good hiking shoes if you plan to explore.

This is a picture of my favorite beach in kona, called Kua bay or Manini'owali Beach. Its beautiful soft sand, teal water, showers, bathrooms, and gentle slope into an ocean of small waves make it one of the best beaches for kids and a relaxing experience for everyone. To reach Kua Bay, also known as Manini'owali Beach, drive north out of Kona on Highway 19. Look for signs to the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery about 4.5 miles north of Kona Airport on your right. The turn for the beach is opposite the highway on your left from the cemetery, and you'll be in the parking lot once you make the left turn.

Hippie yoga vibe, with a side of circus. Kehena is best known for its beautiful black sand beach and dolphin resting area. This beach is clothing optional. There is a drum circle on Sundays that draws a large hippie crowd and becomes a lively social spot. But mornings are my favorite time to go. Few people are present early morning. You’ll often hear Hawaii’s Big Island described as one of the “youngest” places in the world. That’s because new earth is constantly being formed as lava flows, cools, and hardens. But while the Big Island may be a “young” destination, there’s definitely a lot of old soul in and around its Lava Tree State Monument. In this remarkable old-growth forest, you can still see the blemishes and battle wounds from 1790, when a mighty lava eruption steamrolled its way through the area. The fast-moving lava enveloped the trees. When the lava made contact with the cool, moist bark, casts of hardened lava formed around the tree trunks. And when the initial surge of lava subsided, the casts of these tree trunks remained, a ghostly reminder of the once-impressive trees that had dominated the forest. Lava trees are often mistaken for petrified wood, and the confusion is understandable. They do look similar. But the centers of lava tree trunks are hollow; the organic matter burned away during the lava flow. What you’re seeing is not petrified wood, but the shape of wood that once was, preserved for eternity in hardened lava. If you look carefully inside a hollowed-out lava tree (don’t touch it!), you can see the imprint of the bark, almost like the tree left its own handprint inside the lava that ultimately took its life.

Ecstatic dance Sunday mornings at 11:11am. An opportunity for a unique dance experience. Ecstatic dance is a free form of dance with the goal to achieve ecstasy. This is a natural state in which your awareness shifts and you get to experience a meditative and happy state of mind through body movement. Besides the fact that it is a lot of fun to move your body to music, Ecstatic Dance is also scientifically proven to help your mental & physical health. The good thing about Ecstatic Dance is that there are almost no rules! There are only three important rules to bear in mind when you’re joining an Ecstatic Dance. 1. No alcohol/drugs 2. No talking 3. No judgment Other than those, you’ll have no limitations during an Ecstatic Dance session! There is no choreography, there is no set music genre, and most importantly: there is nothing but love and acceptance around you. It is a safe space for you to truly express yourself how you want.

Want to lift your Ecstatic Dance experience to a whole new level? Drink a good brew of cocoa beforehand! Cacao is not just a delicious drink, but the cacao beans contain a psychoactive ingredient called theobromine, which translates to “food of the Gods“. Theobromine is a bitter alkaloid that has been shown to be mildly stimulating, giving you a burst of energy and improving focus as well as memory storage.  Cacao also increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain as well as induces the release of endorphins and dopamine, our feel-good hormones. As a result, we are happier and our creativity is reaching peak states. Since ancient times cacao has been used as a medicine to heal physical, mental and spiritual illnesses. Cacao has been shown to boost the immune system and lower cholesterol and blood pressure as well as leading to euphoria and deeper spiritual connection. Perfect in combination with Ecstatic Dance! Hawaiian Sanctuary specializes in growing cocoa and you can purchase the drink at the sanctuary.

Where to Buy Groceries

Target, Walmart, Safeway, and Cost-U-Less are all in Hilo. They are the most cost effective places to shop and often have a greater variety of food and brands than the smaller grocery stores in Pahoa and Kalapana. Malama market in Pahoa is a new grocery store and has everything you would need. It’s only slightly more expensive than Hilo stores.

If there is rain here, it might not be raining down the road

Weather changes dramatically over short distances. Don't be discouraged. Always be prepared for a little rain. It usually only lasts a short time before the sun comes back out and luckily it rarely gets cold unless you are going to Volcano or to the mountains.

What to pack for your Hawaii trip

The temperature varies here, depending on the season and the activity. If you’re going up Mauna Loa or visiting Volcano National Park at night, it can be very cold. You may be headed to the beach, but always prepare for rain, even when it’s warm and sunny. Pack to dress in layers. Bring reef safe sunscreen, bug spray, a good pair of walking shoes and flip flops. Water shoes are nice, but not a must.

Hawaii’s Spirit of Aloha

Aloha is a beautiful word with a complex meaning. Known generally as a greeting or a farewell, but it is more than a simple salutation; aloha is a way of life. The aloha spirit is the coordination of mind and heart within each person. It brings each person to the self. Each person must think and emote good feelings to others. It means mutual regard and affection and it extends warmth and caring with no obligation in return. “Aloha” is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence.
