It's a bit hidden, but a 10-15 minute walk away and offers a very cool lounge atmosphere. And good cocktails. One of my favorites in the city.

If you're looking for a museum, The Braod is free. Just check online for tickets. It's right next the the Disney Concert Hall (another iconic building) and right near MOCA, another museum.

Downtown LA has changed drastically over the past 10 years and has become a vibrant place to visit. Tons of bars and restaurants to explore.
While you may encounter quite a few homeless people on the streets, I've never experienced it to be an issue, and most areas have a lot of foot traffic these days and is safe. Otherwise use your best judgement, and it's immediately obvious when you find yourself in the wrong area and need to turn back.
It's also very easy to get with the metro from the Hollywood / Western station.
If you'd like to explore more of the history as well, I fully recommend the walking tours offered by the LA Conservancy. They can be surprisingly interesting. https://www.laconservancy.org/tours

Gigantic park a short walk away. Can visit the observatory or just go hike one of its many trails. Awesome for a Saturday morning hide. Check out all of the trails online, as there are quite a few choices.
