Luzerne Boardwalk winds through an old growth cedar swamp along the bottom lands of the East Branch of Big Creek, just south of the village of Luzerne. With towering cedars overhead and water underneath, the sturdy boardwalk (constructed and used by horseback riders) offers a unique and beautiful hike. An extensive network of hiking/horse trails extends beyond the one-half mile boardwalk, but the boardwalk itself is not a loop trail. A tornado crossed this area in 1997 and uprooted some large white pine and cedar trees. These dead snags and downed timber attract woodpeckers and chickadees and provide cover for a variety of wildlife species including bears and bobcats. LOCATION: From the M-72 traffic light in Luzerne, drive south on Deeter Road for 1/2 mile to Palmer Road. Turn left (east) and proceed 1/4 mile to Galloway Road. Turn right (south) and drive 3/8 mile to Forest Road 3023. Turn left onto this two-track and drive until it ends at the Luzerne Boardwalk parking area.

A great place to view a large herd of elk and get up close to them for great photos. The City of Gaylord maintains an elk herd and provides viewing areas for the public to stop and watch the impressive herd. Under the city's care the roughly 70 elk can be viewed from near the Elk's Lodge off Grandview at Elk View Park. The herd is contained on 108 acres. City staff feed the animals corn, hay and sugar beets, plus vitamins. The herd started with three elk 14 years ago, when a local nature center closed. Currently, a few of the bulls weigh well over 800 pounds and stand roughly 6' tall. The bulls will don their massive horns during the fall and winter, dropping them in the spring.

With an area of 9,672 acres, Hartwick Pines is one of the largest state parks in the Lower Peninsula. The park's rolling hills overlook the valley of the East Branch of the AuSable River, four small lakes and unique timber lands. The principal feature of this park is the 49-acre forest of old growth pines which gives the park its name. Situated among the towering trees of one of Michigan's largest remaining stands of virgin white pine, Hartwick Pines Logging Museum depicts the state's 19th-century logging era when Michigan led the nation in lumber production. The museum is located along the Old Growth Forest Foot Trail, a quarter mile walk from the visitor center. Historical interpretation is provided by the Michigan History Center. Location: The park is located in Crawford County, northeast of Grayling on M-93, Exit 259 off I-75.

Lying between the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the northern half of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is the nearly one-million-acre Huron-Manistee National Forests. The Forests offer year-around motorized and non-motorized recreation opportunities. Most popular are the trails and campgrounds along four nationally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers such as the Pine, Manistee, Au Sable and Pere Marquette. The Forests management team of botanists, biologists, archeologists, fire, timber, and silvicultural specialists manage for health, harvest, prescribed burns and endangered/sensitive species habitat. The HMNF is host to such species as the Kirtland’s Warbler, Piping Plover, Karner Blue Butterfly and Pitcher’s Thistle. Located in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, the Au Sable is known for its high water quality, scenery, recreational opportunities, cold water fishery, and historic and cultural significance. It may just be the finest brown trout fly-fishing east of the Rockies. If that were not enough reason to visit the river, the Au Sable is also one of the best canoeing rivers in the Midwest.

A great spot for hiking, wildlife viewing, skiing, snowshoeing Viewing Wildlife The ultimate wildlife viewing experience is watching animals in their habitat. Here are some helpful tips to become a wildlife friendly viewer: Use the right tools - A field guide, a pair of binoculars and a camera. Wear clothing that is appropritate for the season and activitiy. Watch at dawn and dusk - This is the time when most wildlife species are active enough to view. Keep your distance - Maintain a distance that is comfortable for the wildlife. Stay quiet - Move slowly and quietly to increase your chances of viewing wildlife, and to avoid stressing the animals you wish to watch. Do not feed the wildlife - There is plenty of food available in the wild. Human food can cause digestive problems, provide improper nutrition, and even kill an animal.
