Make for this traditional old cafe which is only a 5 minute walk from the Zocalo. It has old world Mexican charm. The food is very good but the surroundings are better. You may even be treated to a group of musicians playing while you eat. Beware though, it can get very busy at popular times so either book or be prepared to wait for a table.

If one wants a burger this is the place to go. Too many to choose from and if that does not satisfy you, simply create your own. Salads although a bit small are wonderful in their presentation and taste. It is located next to Alameda del Norte (Metro Hidalgo, two stops away from Tlatelolco station).

The service is "Cantina type" so, very personal (like they are reading your mind) and friendly. The Danubio is a great place to enjoy top-quality yet unassuming seafood in the heart of Mexico City. It's fairly easy to find close to landmarks such as the Palace of Fine Arts and the Torre Latinoamericana. It is a very populous area, filled with pedestrians, street sellers, traffic etc. In short - real city atmosphere, not the glitz you can find in posher areas such as Polanco. The restaurant itself has been there forever (over 70 yrs as their brochures indicate) and they specialize in all sorts of Seafood which is always top quality, and served in somewhat simple but absolutely delicious recipes.

The atmosphere is the real deal with great Mexican beer and plenty of mariachi's roaming around for your listening pleasure. As much fun is also the people watching. The birria is so good. The service is great. They have unlimited amount of drinks you can have. The waiter keeps bringing as much birria as you can eat. Also served with del rancho cheese, avocados, and tortillas. There are really nice pyramid ruins, the church and the square together in one area, which makes you think about it as a perfect example of cultural syncretism - pre-columbian ruins, Spanish church and kind of modern square, which witnessed the massacre of students in 1968. One of the most important places in the City.

Located near Hidalgo station, this museum is just two metro stations from the apartment, a 10 minute ride. The physical building is gorgeous with it's columns, large patio with a fountain and wooden floors indoors. The collection is fantastic because it gives a good insight on culture and aesthetics of colonial Mexico. Plus the location is great to explore other downtown sights.

Food is normal, not out of this world, but the house the restaurant is adapted in is spectacular! Located at the restored area of Historic Center, at about 800 meters from the Zocalo. The house is amazing, beautiful, covered with hand painted tiles. Ideal for breakfast or a typical Mexican lunch.

The Palacio Nacional is a curiosity from the outside, with a drab nondescript exterior, balconies that are two small for celebrating independence, etc. But the interior is a marvelous expression of authentic Spanish (think Moorish) architecture with long vistas, arcades of substance and interior courts that inspire poetry. Diego Rivera created murals to capture the tumultuous cultural collision between the indigenous Indians and the plundering Spanish Conquistadors. Every mural tells a story, no detail should be left unexplained. These are a national masterpiece, an historical record and a lasting gift. // Tómese tiempo para poder apreciar los impresionantes murales de Diego Rivera.

The museum is a wonderful look into Mexican handicrafts. The museum shop has a wonderful collection of pieces. While these may seem expensive, the money is worth it as the pieces represent quality work. I would recommend starting at the top and working your way down. There are basically two areas on each floor which represent different crafts. Around the center are fabulous pieces from the Day of the Dead celebration. As you walk in there is a beaded VW and when you look up to the ceiling in the main room there are numerous paper figures.

Getting Around

The metro system is efficient and cheap (about 30 US cents per ride). The heart of the city centre (metro Zocalo) is five stations and one transfer from the apartment, a 20 minute ride. When rush hour comes between 8-9:30am you will be in a tuna can....so careful where you put your money and expensive things. Put them in front of you. Wear pants that have cuffs at the bottom of your legs, and put all your money there. Just carry your small camera in your front pocket and photocopies of your passport. You will still have tons of people inside, but not nearly as much as rush hour. The last 2 wagons are for women and children. There is always a rail police to let you know that you are in the wrong side of the yellow line.
